thinking abt how charmacden can't exist on two of its hinges alone. it's rly interesting viewing the ship through dennis' perspective bc of how charlie and mac each contribute to his character development.
the way i see it, dennis feels the most comfortable around charlie bc of how accepting he is. his standards are on the fucking floor, there's rly nothing for him to judge with (nothing that dennis cares abt anyway) and it lets him be a little more open with someone he knows won't automatically reject him, and in fact might actually enable/support him with no underlying motives. plus, he can see right through dennis' shit so there's no point in pretending around him anyway. charlie is uncomplicated, someone dennis can be open and vulnerable with. that's the first stage.
the second stage would be accepting himself, which he can't do with charlie alone. charlie is great for opening up, it's freeing even, but neither of them like digging deep. they have this weird unspoken communication so while he feels understood, he doesn't have to think much of it. mac, on the other hand, won't stop reminding dennis of who he is. and dennis hates the person he is, he doesn't even KNOW who he is, but mac loves him despite everything. dennis dismisses it bc he thinks mac doesn't know the "real" him, which is why it's so important for dennis to be real with someone in the first place. so because he has that relationship with charlie, the unconditional love from mac would have to force dennis to realize that he doesn't have to lie to be worthy of their love.
tldr; dennis is someone that is always hiding behind a facade, charlie helps him stop hiding, and mac helps him accept the thing that was hidden.
