Continuing that thought... Indiana Jones as a character and an idea was always someone who yes, would go into abandoned (or 'abandoned') temples and find treasure, but a big part of his character always also was having interest in the foreign cultures, having friends across the world, knowing all these languages etc (which is even clearer in the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles but there from the start...)

Which obviously is not enough to write it all as unproblematic etc and there's.... obviously plenty of problematic tropes there...

But lot of the adventure stuff just doesn't have that and I have noticed especially in lot of modern adventure/treasure hunt stuff they just remove the locals and it's not really a fix!

There was this series where the creators were talking about how they wanted to avoid the issues with the old adventure stories and then literally the first episode has our heroes go on an adventure to get a treasure from an ancient city they can use in their research and like... who made it? where are these people?
