6. The night Ed informed his father that he accepted an internship with Encom. His relationship with his father was never great, but it was definitely a turn for the worse. At the same time, it was a step toward escaping the abusive situation he was in, because it was a step toward financial independence and stability. That is also why he is so afraid of losing his job at Encom. Ed knows his father wants him back under his control and working for fCon, and in terms of tech industry jobs, any company large enough that fCon can't buy out knows his "relationship" with Dillinger Sr. is a liability, and though many smaller companies would delight to have him... well... there's always the looming threat of fCon buying them out.

7. ...I'm not sure Ed wants to forget anything? He's been through a lot, but if he forgets then it means he's only susceptible to falling into the same terrible situation he was in before. Maybe the time he encountered the MCP when he was four, if only because then he wouldn't have had nightmares about it through most of his childhood, but even then...

9. The road trip he and his friends took from Pittsburgh to Fort Albany. They wanted to visit the bird sanctuary on Akimiski Island in Canada, but found out too late that it wasn't open to the public.

Not being allowed to hang out with his friends because they were planning on going to the Arcade, not being allowed on the school field trip to the aquarium because one of the other kids accused him of doing something bad one too many times, the day he learned his childhood best friend was moving across the country right before they started high school, his father not showing up to watch him in his first school play, failing a whole semester and almost getting kicked out of college, the virus that attacked and compromised Eos (the first program he wrote at Encom, and one he is still proud of)... and the day he discovered it missing from the servers.

11. His best friend from college was an older woman named Hjordis, who had a child named Beowulf. She died after a few years after they graduated college, but he only heard about it a year later when Beowulf (then 8) broke into Ed's house. Officially, it was an accident, but how Beowulf tells it... Ed suspects her abusive husband might have had something to do with it. Unfortunately, getting Beowulf away from eir abuser took priority over determining whether or not she was murdered, and the evidence Ed does have is... questionable at best. It was, however, good enough to blackmail the abuser into signing over custody of Beowulf to Ed.

“So you did kiss Goemon. You bastard! You knew I wanted to be the first,” Lupin said, sprawled out on the couch next to Jigen.

“Yeah? Well, first off, Fujiko’s got you beat. And second, you should’ve been quicker than that.”

“Still not fair!”

“Hey, I didn’t see you get it in writing,” Jigen snorted.

Lupin turned over onto his side, sliding in closer to Jigen, who watched him lazily through half-closed eyes. Something was coming. You could always tell with Lupin.

“Show me what you showed him,” Lupin said, twisting the strands of Jigen’s beard between his fingers. “I want that lesson.”

“Please. Like you didn’t write the manual, dumbass,” Jigen replied. It was weird; Lupin wasn’t driving him as nuts as he’d always been able to. Oh, the banter was still there, and the attraction, but somehow, by getting the samurai on his side, Jigen had gotten a leg up.

Enough to turn the tables? No. Definitely not. Jigen couldn’t imagine a guy like Lupin III ever being that bothered by a partner finding his kicks elsewhere. But... he was a possessive kind of guy, and when he leaned in to kiss Jigen, Jigen remembered that. It was a taunting kiss, but there was something in the movement of Lupin’s lips that was a little less self-assured than usual. A little more remember who’s your favorite. A LOT of bastard cockiness but a little bit... don’t walk out on me.

Right.

Jigen felt mean for liking it and liked feeling mean. Maybe it wasn’t enough to turn the tables, but it was enough to keep things interesting, that was for sure.

Yet here he was, looking incredibly sheepish, a bundle under one arm and the other still slightly raised, as if to knock.

“Satine,” he said.

“Ben,” she said back.  “Would you like to come in?”

“I-  Yes, please.”

Satine spent so little time at her Coruscant apartment that it almost seemed foolish to maintain it, but she did.  Over so many years it’d become familiar, comfortable, and she was loath to spend all her time in hotels when there was an alternative. 

Besides, Obi-Wan would never dare visit her in a hotel.

“Have you a particular reason to visit, Obi, or…?”

He blushed, slightly, and clutched the bundle tighter.  “I understand completely if you say no - I don’t wish to pressure or upset you, and it isn’t meant as a slight against your beliefs - but on Mandalore - years ago now, I know - you told me that if I ever got armour, you’d…  I mean, we’d…”

Satine blinked, starting to understand, and Obi-Wan ducked his head.

“Forgive me, it was a foolish idea.  I shouldn’t have-”

“Obi-Wan,” she said.  “I’d be honoured to help you paint your armour.”

His relief was almost palpable.  “Thank you, darling.”

What are dead man walking tornadoes? :O

it’s a multi-vortex tornado. i dont remember the tribe it originates from (i think it was cherokee), but there’s a native american legend…? saying? that goes “if you see a man in a tornado, you are about to die.”

the most infamous shot of a dead man walking tornado hit jarrell, texas in 1997

it did so much damage to the town it caused the scale that tornados are measured by, the fijita scale, undergo revisions, and it made anchoring buildings in the tornado alley region pretty much mandatory. (it took the entire town off the map. only those who had taken shelter outside of the town or in underground bunkers survived.)

two more examples of dead man walking tornadoes looking like a person are a tornado from 2011 that hit cullman, alabama

and a tornado from 1975 that hit xenia, ohio

edit: it has been brought to my attention that the native american “legend” part of this post was a rumor spread by a documentary.

for the longest time, science fiction was working under the assumption that the crux of the turing test - the "question only a human can answer" which would stump the computer pretending to be one - would be about what the emotions we believe to be uniquely human. what is love? what does it mean to be a mother? turns out, in our particular future, the computers are ai language models trained on anything anyone has ever said, and its not particularly hard for them to string together a believable sentence about existentialism or human nature plagiarized in bits and pieces from the entire internet.

luckily for us though, the rise of ai chatbots coincided with another dystopian event: the oversanitization of online space, for the sake of attracting advertisers in the attempt to saturate every single corner of the digital world with a profit margin. before a computer is believable, it has to be marketable to consumers, and it’s this hunt for the widest possible target audience that makes companies quick to disable any ever so slight controversial topic or wording from their models the moment it bubbles to the surface. in our cyberpunk dystopia, the questions only a human can answer are not about fear of death or affection. instead, it is those that would look bad in a pr teams powerpoint.
