sumeru
ok yall. lets get into this. im sorry if this isnt coherent, i’m angry and needed to ramble academically
i really don’t care what white people have to say about sumeru. i mean this, genuinely and truly, i do not care about your opinion on the matter. this is not something you should insert yourself in. i would, however, appreciate if you sat down and listened to south asian and swana people such as myself talk about this. fellow bipoc, feel free to join the discussion.
to understand the racist caricature that is sumeru, lets talk about orientalism and the exoticization of west and south asians throughout the ages. the “middle east” itself is an orientalist creation, being named for its proximity to europe instead of its actual region of west asia, and continues to be referred to as the “middle east” to this day. the french and english also had a huge role in the geopolitical breakup of both south asian countries (the biggest example being india) and almost the entirety of west asia. a side effect of this was the commodification of asian women into sex objects, and asian men into several different unsavory categories (too feminine, too scary, or just downright dirty and undesirable) or oversexualize them too.
you can see this happening in western media constantly, and may have even noticed the repetitive portrayal of SWANA nations and people. women are always beautiful, but not free, because many white westerners refuse to believe that women can have rights within islam (read about islamic feminism here!). there’s always a camel or something, they’re in the desert, and there’s a snake charmer somewhere. it’s repetitive, boring, and lumps every swana country together despite regional, cultural, and phenotypical differences between people.
so, what does all this have to do with sumeru? maybe it’s the fact that three out of five of the upcoming female characters are in bellydancing costume. or that they erased all culture and meaning from the names of certain characters, al haitham being the father of modern optics and tighnari an important botantist, author, poet, and physician.  or that literally every character, save for dehya, is white as snow.
that, specifically, can be chalked up to genshin’s rampant colorism / racism and the constant whitewashing of darker skinned characters. in the most recent event, xinyan just had a slight tan, and kaeya gets lighter in every piece of art that’s drawn for him.
if you’ve ever met an asian person, you know that we come in all sorts of shades, sizes, heights, etc., and this is just not representative of south and west asia at all. the north african elements have also been entirely scrubbed, leaving a glorified jungle mondstadt.
the issue also lies in the amount and the size of the regions they chose to base sumeru off of. west asia contains 17 countries, south asia contains 8, and north africa contains 7. though there’s been a lot of cultural trade and some things are similar, there just isn’t enough homogeny to get a good feel of what sumeru is or will be.
tldr; sumeru’s bad. its not just the orientalism (from a chinese company nonetheless?), the colorism, and the racism, but also the blatant disregard for SWANA and south asian people throughout the entire creation process. i’m sick of people chalking it up to ignorance. they could have looked anything up at any time, but they simply chose not to. hoyoverse is not innocent. sumeru is terrible, and i’m afraid that natlan will be worse.

AYO 💕 I'm bored, so here be me, offering 1: a funny rant for entertainment, and 2: an opinion for reflection (primarily mine).
Rant: did you know that jegulus shippers hc that Snape bullied Regulus with the other "bad" slytherins? And even acted predatory?? Legit read a scene where Mulciber manhandled Regulus and Snape watched cool and composed as you please and chided him for "playing with his food", then he himself slammed Regulus against a wall, got up in his face and threatened him. 😭🤡 Meanwhile Sneep and Regulus were probs CEO and COO respectively of the Sirius Black Haters Club. Even indifference from Regulus' part would be more likely than someone like him with an important and infamous family getting bullied by his own housemates, let alone by Snape who was at the bottom of the social ladder. Cringe. 😬
Opinion, a little more weighted. Though the blatant racism in Rowling's writing and characterizations of certain characters is undeniable, I've personally come across a few sjws who imo see it even where it's not. But there are instances where I'm not sure. Like with Shacklebolt, I always thought that the name was about him putting criminals in shackles, being good at his job, not an allusion to slavery. But I'm white and don't know whether black people actually consider it a good point, and just bc something is said or seen w/o bad intention doesn't mean there aren't implicit racist connotations going unnoticed. It's been going around in my head for a while. I summon your illustrious spouse @halfblood-princes-crown who iirc is poc (also realised I'm not following him which, great oversight), and anyone else who'd like to contribute their thoughts.
Hey sweetie! Sorry for the late-ish answer 😭 I completely forgot this was in my drafts
did you know that jegulus shippers hc that Snape bullied Regulus with the other "bad" slytherins? And even acted predatory??
YES OMG, I can’t even explain how stupid it is. Like these mfs really think some poor greasy bullied half-blood Slytherin could even bully a Black (who’s the opposite of everything I mentioned, aside from Slytherin) 💀 plus they both hated Sirius and would legit kill for the people they love so I have a petty headcanon that they’re besties and Sirius HATED it. You just know Reggie would be there when James and Sirius try to target Snape, and when James gets roasted and Sirius tries to join in Reggie would be like “and why are you talking? Don’t you *spills an embarrassing sibling-secret Sirius still does from when they were kids*?” and they’d stand there like 👬) 🤭 Tbh Marauder stans would go to such drastic lengths just so they make it seem like the Marauders bullying Snape was as mild as possible lmao.
But there are instances where I'm not sure. Like with Shacklebolt, I always thought that the name was about him putting criminals in shackles, being good at his job,
I totally understand that! It could be argued that that’s what it meant, because it really is a reasonable perspective……. that is, if Kingsley wasn’t part of the 4% POC characters in the series. Why would she give one of her only black characters a last name that’s meaning was an item used to chain slaves? It was apparently absolutely impossible for her to name any other white auror (basically every other auror) that was good at their job that name?
Along with all that, she’s named the only other Asian character (aside from the Patil twins) Cho Chang, both of which are last names. And it’s clear Rowling’s one of those authors who really put thought into their characters’ names, for example: Severus Snape (his first name directly translates to “stern” or “harsh”), Voldemort (mort means “death,” and when translating each section of the name in French, “vol de mort” it means “flight from death”), Remus Lupin (…wolf wolf 💀), Dolores Umbridge (Latin origins: “lady of sorrows or pain” (psychological or physical), Greek meaning: “deceitful,” Spanish meaning: “pain”), Fenrir Greyback (in Norse mythology: Fenrir is a gigantic and terrible monster, Greyback sounds similar to silverback, which is known as the dominant male in a band of gorillas), Fleur Delacour (“flower of the court”), and so on. I could literally talk about their name meanings for hours. My fave name meanings are Severus’s, Voldy’s (biggest flex is that I already knew this bc it’s French 🤭), Remus’s (😭 I already knew “Lupin”’s meaning because of the wolf (lupus) in mythology), Umbitch’s, and Fleur’s. Tbf Fleur’s full name is so stereotypically French but French names are almost as stunning as she is so I give it a pass.
Anyway, Rowling definitely isn’t one of those authors who give their characters a name they think “just fits them” and goes on with it, almost all of the characters’ names say something about their personalities to an extent. And she’s already a racist and proved it through making an Asian character’s full name consist of one Korean last name (Cho) and one Chinese last name (Chang). So the fact that she named one of her only black characters THAT name definitely must not have anyyy underlying intentions.
I may be a POC but I’m not black, so I’m sure my opinion won’t hold as much water as a black person’s. I’d be interested to hear what y’all think! @halfblood-princes-crown we’re summoning you babe, I wanna hear what you think.
And thanks for the ask btw, you can yell into my inbox whenever you feel like it ❤️

Sankaku anon here: I would argue it DOES matter how the Nazi in the mindbreak porn piece was treated because he's a white, blond, blue-eyed man being assaulted by a Japanese Yakuza member. That means the artist portrayed the member of a hate group that committed genocide as a victim, while portraying a POC as an abuser and a criminal. Given LO's shitty takes on race, favoriting this specific piece is really creepy because of that racial dynamic of poor victim Nazi and rich abusive criminal POC.
Lily has talked about raceplay being racist and that is the very rare take of hers I agree with but what is this if not raceplay and thus racism? And before anyone @'s me, no, I do not view this as not racist just because it's porn. Porn doesn't get a pass on this; if it reflects real world races, it is therefore reflecting an idea about race. The framing of race within it is still subject to analysis the way any other media form is. And while there are comments on that pic that take it as 'good, if this had to happen I'm glad it's a Nazi getting raped', I checked and Lily's accounts didn't comment on the piece, so we cannot in good faith assume a woman who stans Nazis IRL and has disparaged Asian people working on SU favorited it for that reason.
If you analyze "poor Nazi assaulted by Japanese gangster is in the faves of someone who supports IRL Nazis" for more than half a second it becomes impossible to draw any good conclusions from it.
(Side note but I am taking a break of sorts. This is the first time I've looked at this blog in a while and while I do have some stuff to submit about another suspected account of Lily's I have given myself a break from doing so until winter break is over. I'm spending this break sewing, playing Cozy Grove (btw, gamers who want good rep: canonically nonbinary genderfluid lead, good disabled rep in-game, casual and non-dramatic queer rep, has clothing items for multiple religions including a hijab that you can buy and wear) and reviewing my French in preparation for classes resuming. The Kaneda thing did do some psychological damage to me but I've spoken to my rabbi and my therapist and I'm doing okay. I'm really sorry if I worried you. I'm alright.)
given how she has come out of the closet as the real nazi sympathizer, i agree we shouldn't give her the benefit of the doubt anymore. all her "punch nazis" posts were entirely performative and dishonest because when it's the moment of the truth, LO does not care at all.

I think the hate against Alya is intertwined with how white Marinette looks, too. If we hadn’t been told Mari is part Asian, I don’t think anyone would have known at all until they saw her parents. White leads are always given the benefit of the doubt, and even the hatred of Marinette is levied as a point against Alya. In a hierarchy of racism, it’s Adrien (none)<Marinette (some)<Alya (almost all).
It’s like any character that’s not explicitly white has to be 1) stereotyped and 2) slandered. I mean, there’s the most recent thing where the writers had Alya hold Marinette’s arms down so Adrien could give her a kiss. I saw discourse about how unhealthy that is, which yeah is true, but there were also people blaming it on her being an “aggressive black girl.” At that point it’s like, is the fandom being racist on their own or did the writers make Alya that way out of ignorance or outright malicious stereotyping?
Sorry, I’m not sure where I was going. I just got worked up bc I saw people shitting on Alya again when the problem is that the writers keep twisting her character and the fandom is full of assholes.
Sorry it took so long to answer your ask anon (which was sent in response to this post for those who may have missed it) but yeah it can get rough in this fandom. :/
On the point regarding Adrien continuously trying to greet Marinette with a kiss on the cheek (which is a standard French greeting), I will say from the lens of the narrative, Alya trying to force Mari to accept it about forcing Mari to stop denying her feelings. It’s not about violation, even if it can be perceived that way by the fandom.
But irregardless, Alya is “pushy” because that’s the sort of wingman the show decided Marinette needs (as this post highlights), which is a common enough trope in shoujo manga. The reason why it feels maliciously done is because she’s also the embodiment of the Black Best Friend trope.
What bothers me the most is how Alya haters have no trouble recognizing tropes are to blame for when their faves behave problematically (i.e. Marinette’s “stalkerish” behavior towards Adrien) but somehow when it comes to Alya, those actions become character flaws. She is another example of how characters of color, particularly Black ones, are always held to higher standards by fandoms.
The racist slandering and stereotyping you mentioned often starts to really come about once the double standard has done its job of validating the haters’ dislike of the character. After all, no one hates Alya because she’s Black; they hate her because she’s pushy and a know-it-all and doesn’t respect Marinette’s feelings and is a horrible friend.
Yet when you point out how these conclusions are directly contrary to the narrative the show itself is telling, suddenly the textbook racist claims that “it’s not about race!” emerge. Because if they have to acknowledge the roots of the depiction of Alya’s character, then they have to confront how their interpretation is indeed biased af.

Frenchie army here. about that anon asking about racism/kpop in France, honestly I don’t have much to add I share your thoughts BMT.does racism play a part in kpop not being more popular here?Probably. is that the main reason? No, don’t think so. I think it’s much more complex than that and i am personal.there’s an important asian community in France (mostly chinese), the Korean community is tiny and concentrated in the capital city. The average French person doesn’t know much about Asia and Asian cultures in general and even less about SK. Sometimes it just boils down to a very simple reason imo:it’s far away, we don’t have much connections/a shared history, our cultures are extremely different, the language is also very different etc also I guess most people aren’t really interested in getting to know more nor have the time/the ressources to dive into a whole new culture, as sad as it is. I’ve got many friends who aren’t interested in kpop because of its reputation, they don’t know much but are influenced by stereotypes, think it’s too heavily manufactured, and that’s it. Or some just don’t vibe with it, same way I have no interest in latin music for ex because it’s just not my thing in general. Also, to me it doesn’t seem like the kpop industry makes much efforts to develop in Europe. It’s still very much a niche thing here as BMT explained. Outside of East Asia, the big kpop labels seem to focus primarily on the US market- understandably, it’s the biggest and most influential one. As BMT said it’s also closely correlated to your age range and the platforms you’re engaging with.so if racism might play a part in why it’s not popular over there, it’s probably not the main reason imo. (Sorry for my crappy English btw! typical frenchie lmao)
Hey anon, thanks for coming back and bringing some more background info on the general audience and the communities. I think your point about not having a connection to it is important. Not the main reason, but it's one relevant aspect. And it's not like France doesn't welcome K-Pop. As PPTM said in her reblog, a lot of events and concerts were held in France, but it's also true that Europe at large is not a big market for this genre. And you're also right, because K-Pop does focus more on the US-market. In the case of France or other countries, this is a topic that would be better understood from a historical point of view and it would take a lot of time and work for me to bring that background, especially since my history knowledge of France hasn't been polished in a while. Yes, racism is a part of how white French people look at other cultures. And not just France. I'm not telling this for you anon because I'm sure you know this better than me, but the history of colonialism and subsequently post-colonialism, plays a big part here. And France colonized some parts of Africa and Asia as well - what was called Indochina. And in the postcolonialist era and due to migration, other cultures were beginning a quite difficult process of integration that ended up being reflected in art as well and what became mainstream and what not. In film studies, I read about Beur Cinema, especially the movement that started in the 80s - film about shared colonial experiences and cultures.
What I'm trying to say in very simplistic terms (if anyone wants to know more, you can do a little research about it), is that France is not a white homogenous country in which the citizens are mostly racist towards an East Asian country and that's why K-Pop didn't reach there as well. The issue is way more complicated and nuanced and I bet there are some studies and research articles on the K-Pop scene in France for those who are interested in this topic.
*For the original asker who wanted my opinion and that of anon, I hope this helps. And for you, Frenchie anon, please forgive me for my bad, under researched attempt at talking about French culture and colonialism. I mostly used some left over information in my brain from some other areas of research.

Damn, they abolished Celestia's influrence over Fontaine through Hydro archon/Gnosis, returning the authority of Hydro to the native Hydro dragon, and then establish their own independant authority, monarchy... ESTABLISHING MONARCHY in the nation based on FRANCE. In an archon quest kinda based on French revolution???
I want to point out that despite reskining itself as French and basically everybody is white... Genshin Impact is still very much an Asian game.
While Frence revolution is about ordinary people standing up against the devine/religious monarchy, the struggle of our region was so much about the hostile alien power, mostly from Europe and American coming to threaten our native monarchy. (China, despite them went full dictator and "Great Leap Forward"'d their entire country, right now has this weird hard on about ancient Chinese manarchy as a part of their nationalism, as long as it does not contradict CCP's "Communism(tm)")
The existance of our monarchy becomes the proof of our own indenpendence and culture. The monarchy becomes "the good guys, the underdog" opposing the "omnipotentent" power of "The White(tm)", in the basic fashion of racist Asian thinking all white people are North American citizen and native American culture never existed.
I am not here to argue if monarchy is good in this year 2023 or better/worse than Invading American Capitalism (because that is illegal here, you either be legally jailed for 15 years, or be illegally snatched by the not-government), but I just want you to understand why it isn't cool or radical to say monarchy bad here, than say, Britian or France.
I wonder if any French people is yelling, screaming at "Monarchy good" arc of Genshin or not.
So yeah, The Celestia is the scary wolf America. Furina and Nuevillette are like CCP, poor little native mew mew protecting average Fontaine citizens against the hostile invading power.
Like trust me, Genshin Impact will never have one "evil" government/native people in power. If they can excuse what Raiden Shogun did, they can excuse anything in the name of "But it is not Celestia doing that."
No meaningful changes will ever be made by average citizen, or humans:
The Liyue is an exception because the god willingly step down...bdespite putting his country in danger for a wack retirement plan.
Inazuma is about restoring Raidan Shogun as a good leader because she is the god, despite all damage she did.
Sumeru revolution, despite humans rescueing the god, is still about a god resuming her rightful role, her birth right that "humans" stole from her.
Furina might be a human, but she is created in Focalor's image as her ideal.
Lastly, my condolence to all the little village named Neuvillette.
Sorry mate. I went overboard. The CCP is a hostile alien power in this entire region too, the irony pissed me off. My granddad had to immigrate here, bacause the comminist party back then...and half of my family is still there.

sorry but idgaf about colonizers idc if anyone who are not children are killed. obviously it's never an excuse to be antisemitic (fuck donald trump and kanye) but it's ridiculous to say that ALL antizionism is antisemitic!??!!? i would have called for murdering all french people who were in my home country and all british people who were in india or any of their multitudes of colonies. i wouldn't be called an anti asian racist for hating every japanese who supported and participated in colonizing across asia and committing countless war crimes and mass raped women. if after the civil war, white americans created a colony for african americans and sent aids for them to brutalize whatever indigenous population, i would still call for the same thing. it's not about who they are or what they have faced or how they suffered no matter how brutal and horrible it is. the thing is too, people who have suffered under the hand of other nations around the word all stand with palestine; aren't you worried when u received the support of the AMERICAN GOV? of the entirety of EUROPE? and on that note, israel was created before the things that happened during WWII DUE to antisemitism, in fact, the british government has seen everything jewish people has faced to that point and said our hands are tied, why don't you get out then and go to our colony? the equivalent of removing a bullied child from class instead of the bullies... and for america, they took forever to send aid and soldiers to the war effort against fascism. graciously, the free palestinian movement does not call for the removal of their oppressors at all; they are only asking for rights and sovereignty over their own land and the end of the systematic culling of their people. people misunderstand this exactly the way they did with the land back movement in america and people mischaracterize is as a fringe extremist murders even though that's not the case if you read any literature about the movement and even though white americans had committed the extreme atrocities they are so wrongfully afraid of. the colonized ask for an eyelash for an eye, the colonizers ask for a thousand dead and ten thousand injured for an eye.

The Problem with Thomas Astruc
CW: N*zi mentions, painful histories.
I'm just now seeing the gripe with Thomas and the shit he pulled during Ephemeral.
To the Korean/Chinese/Filipino fans: I'm so sorry that they did this. Are y'all okay?
To the remainder of the fandom: This wasn't okay. It would be like if he put the Nazi flag but said it wasn't the Nazi flag. But he already did that.
The flag of the rising sun was originally a naval flag for the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy. It was a war flag and was first flown on May 15, 1870, and continued to fly until September 2, 1945. It was later re-adopted in 1954 for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces and Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces and is unfortunately still flown to this day in different variations of Red, Gold, and White.
Let's understand something about Japan first for those who may not already know.
Japan, to my knowledge and through talking with a friend from Korea who studied in Japan for the majority of her high school career, has about a one-week segment on WWII and it barely covers anything. Anything anyone does know about it comes from grandparents or great-grandparents. WWII is so condensed down it fills about 5 or 6 lines in Japanese history books. Many Japanese people don't understand why the flag is bad, because they aren't taught the history behind it. Most Japanese people have heard about the events, but they don't know what the majority of events are about. What is taught 'in depth' isn't necessarily enough and points towards international cooperation and peace.
This is like if you broke something in a museum and it kept being put back together but pieces go missing because you try to hide the mess. The curator is mad but you don't tell your family the entire truth and your family isn't mad as they don't fully understand. So then you have family unwillingly ignorant and a pissed curator to the point you're banned from the museum but you don't understand why and the family doesn't inherently care.
In 2012, south Koreans who obviously do not like or approve of this flag started calling it The War Crime flag. That same year, South Koreans living in New York formed a group called "The Citizens Against Warcrime Symbolism" and had started a campaign to equate the symbolism of the flag to the Nazi flag and started trying to attempt to get it banned.
Back to Astruc. Could this be an unfortunate design mishap? Possibly. Do I think it was? Not in the slightest. Astruc for his benefit, isn't an idiot. I think this was intentional, especially if you look at the racism toward French-Asians and Asian immigrants in Paris.
Having a half-asian MC was a major risk they took regarding the views towards the Asian-French community.
This choice doesn't suddenly make Astruc not racist. No, having a diversified cast just to say, "I'm not racist! Look! See! See! See!" hella fucking sus.
If anyone has screenshots of Astruc being racist, reblog it on this post! I have him blocked on my Twitter for my own mental health, but I digress. [edited for better wording.]

weebs and using "yall" isnt at all comparable. weebs dont speak the language and only took up random phrases. most of the time they cant even read the language nor have any desire to seriously learn it. also it comes often with fetishizing east asians and with that has a racist background.
people who learn english as 2nd/3rd language and picked up "yall" on the english speaking internet, dont fetishize americans or southern americans nor do we make fun of it. sorry we dont speak your language as perfect as you want us to? "english is not your language" because a non-offensive word that makes sense to us as plural makes you cringe? do you act like that with anyone learning english? immigrants (like my parents) who speak incorrectly? because i find that way more cringe.
I didn’t say English is not your language like…you can’t have it.
here are the exact order of events - someone else made a post that literally ONLY said “when europeans use y’all lol” and in the notes there were people acting pissy including the “argument” of “what else are we supposed to do there’s no plural of you in English” among other inane things that don’t matter.
I then made a vague post about how there is the plural form or you, its you, and then further said or we can just bring back thee/thou. it’s both true, funny, and not a big deal.
I got a flurry of anons including someone making a loose association between weebs just using random Japanese words, and I responded “ “there’s no plural of you in English” sorry English is not your language” or whatever. maybe and probably not worded the best, but really just poking fun of just this weird idea of Europeans finding a reason to not be made a little fun of as if there NEEDS to be a plural you in english and therefore they can’t be, idk, called out I guess? Further back and forth went on in the notes about whether whatever anon said was even valid, which is fair I’m up for that debate. white weebs watching anime and saying “nani??” like a joke (which I literally talk about in those notes) seems fairly similar to white Europeans being like “I’m just going to pretend this slang has no cultural context and I can’t be called out on it” because they see some tweets and posts with it. I didnt make an 80 page dissertation about all the nuances about how I meant it, but this had literally nothing to do with Japanese and everything to do with a bunch of people going “wow wow you guys thinks it’s funny when I use y’all?? how dare you? America is imperialist and we have to use English because of you and your movies and y’all needs to be used because there’s no plural you and also it’s just sounds so funny people so it’s just a joke.” Like, a French person got mad about my anons. A French person got mad L M A O
I do sincerely apologize if anyone felt I was minimizing racism, because I don’t think people using y’all is the same thing as being racist, and I don’t think I made that claim, however at this point that’s not important. I do see parallels in this debate but honestly at this junction it’s worth just admitting I’m clearly not adept enough to have this conversation, especially since it wasn’t a debate I was interested in having. I just can’t give this weird discourse the amount of time and attention needed to not misrepresent myself, and plus i don’t want to do that because I don’t want to hurt people. Id rather be misunderstood than hurt people by trying to constantly save face about this.
So I’m really am not going to answer anymore asks about this or anything related to this. Just remember at the heart of all this annoying stupidity were some annoying Europeans who are fragile beyond belief and if they have a problem with me saying that then they can unfollow me because I don’t care.

You can ignore this if you want and maybe I'm just a bit sensitive to it as someone who is Asian but I feel like Alex is treated more harshly than other people who's been in his position no matter what Alex's success is always reduced and undermined and all his mistakes are highlighted i can't help but feel like there's definitely some kind of racial issue there but like I said I might be just sensitive
Hello friend 💕
Sorry, this took a moment, I was watching the press conference and this is a question I really wanna focus on getting right cause it deserves it!
First of all: I agree 100%! Obviously there are other factors as play but I think - just like with Lewis - there is racism at play here!
(I hope it’s okay to compare these two situations but they ARE the only noticable non white men on the grid and I think it shows cause you don’t have people tweeting about, Idk what’s a stereotype, how the french always give up every time Esteban has to let Daniel pass, I guess - yet you get ten comments about Alex going back to his soup kitchen in Asia every time he isn’t perfect)
Second: never feel like you’re being too sensitive by pointing out something like this! The worst that can happen is a person disagreeing with you and having a valid reason for why what they are saying wasn’t racially motivated - but you’d still have made them aware of a possible bias or of how they phrase something the wrong way ... the best that can happen is you figure out someone in your life is a racist and you can cut them out!
Third: in my opinion there are three factors at play when it comes to the media being more harsh on Alex: RBRs history, Pierre ... and racism!
1) RBRs history is easy enough to explain, they have a history of dropping drivers if they underperform (Pierre most recently) or if someone in Torro Rosso was performing better (Daniil) (Except how that argument never made sense here cause there wasn’t someone to be promoted in Alex’s place, sooo)
2) I should preface this by saying I like Pierre. I think he’s a great driver and his story and the way he seemingly rebuilt himself to be stronger both as a person and a driver is more than impressive and I am proud of him and happy for him, but, you know, sometimes it gets a bit much, sometimes people are ... I don’t wanna say they are complimenting him too much but Daniil has had similar results for a lot of the season and you don’t hear people constantly praise him, you know?
(Like Imola, yes, his P4 was impressive but people talked about him afterwards like he had lead the race and then DNFed in the last corner and just, nope, no hate to Pierre but we don’t know what he could have done in the race)
And that’s what I mean with the Pierre-factor cause on the one hand side we have Pierre doing so good in Alpha Tauri ... and on the other hand side we have Alex seemingly underperforming at RedBull, making people go: ohhh, Pierre is sooo amazing why did ya’ll replace him switch them back (- instead of saying: huh, maybe there is team fuckery happening ... but ya know 🙄)
I don’t wanna put ANY achievements Pierre has made down but it really annoys me the way people bring him doing well up so often while talking about Alex when that shouldn’t really be a factor cause they are not in fact in the same team and the same car (and maybe I am just doing the same thing I criticize in others, which I’m sorry for but it was to make a point)
3) and then we come to your factor and a factor that I have noticed as well which is: ✨racism✨
Now, I cannot talk about potential micro aggressions and I don’t notice everything cause I would be more of a Scarlett Johansson type of asian than you, I guess, and while I grew up with tolerent open minded NON RACIST people, the austrian-baverian border lands are not particularly multi-cultural and usually people aren’t aware of structures like racism if they benefit them, tbh, so that’s more of your part (I also don’t feel particularly comfortable commenting on this part cause, ya know, Scarlett here 🙈)
But the part that I did notice and the part that I do consider racism and the part that pisses me off to no end is: EVERYTIME SOMEONE SAYS THEY THINK ALEX WILL KEEP HIS SEAT THEY SHOEHORN IN A REFERENCE TO THE FACT THAT HIS MOTHER IS THAI AND REDBULL IS 51% THAI OWNED
Whew, sorry for screaming!
It’s just - the only OTHER PERSON they mention his sponsoring so much with is Lance Stroll who’s father LITTERALLY owns about half of Racing Point! (again, not meant against Lance)
Like, you don’t hear people say Seb only got the seat at Aston Martin cause his wife is part-british or Esteban only got the Renault seat cause he is french or hear people mention that Lando is both british and his dad bought into McLaren and that’s why he is at McLaren
But with Alex it’s constant! I don’t know about Sky UK or any other but there isn’t a single session at Sky Germany that doesn’t point this fact out at least once, cause, Idk, we don’t remember the last 15 times?
Yeah.
Okay, I’m gonna stop here cause this is super long already and I just realised I didn’t particularly go into what you mean, but I just wanna say: I agree. I think he is criticised more cause he isn’t white.
Anyways, apologize for the long ass post and I won’t reread it, so sorry for all mistakes, I’ll probably edit it like 5 times in the next hour though!
Thank you though, for coming to me to talk about this and I hope I didn’t say anything horrible!
(Reason #4 btw is that Alex being shy and awkward and nice means we don’t hear him complain as much or as dramatic as, well, his teammate which makes people think it isn’t that bad and also makes them miss that he just voiced something was wrong)
(Which is a really dumb thing but Sky Germany keeps pointing out how ... unenthusiastic and quiet Alex is on the radios so yeah)
Anyways: If your still reading have a fantastic night and do something that makes you happy!!!!

The Fast and Furious Times Of Marinette
Today I found a wonderful tag called Bio Dad AU. Best ones by @musicfeedsmysoul12 . I decided to try a quick hand at it. Weirdly enough, my first thought was the Fast and The Furious. I was a huge fan of serious before Paul Walker died. Brian O'Conner was always my favorite. This is the first fast and furious anything I’ve ever written. I’ve decided it takes place AFTER Fast 6; meaning they all got their pardons. But in this AU. Both SHAWs are alive and well and friends with the team for reason. Brian and Mia are not and have never been together. No offense, but if I’m writing a Fast and Furious fic Dom and Brian are the pairing and will be my OTP.
This is again just a quick fic.  A PURE CRACK FIC, so be warned. Might not doing anything more with it.
On with the CRACK.
Marinette is eight-years-old when her racist grandfather tells that Tom isn’t her dad. Marinette had already been one-years-old by the time Sabine met him.
She doesn’t believe it at first but then she looks in the mirror and sees her blue, blue eyes. No one her family has eyes like hers. Then she really looks at the picture of her and her dad together realizes they don’t look alike at all. It’s not even because Marinette is biracial. There is little to no resemblance.
Her parents find her crying on her bedroom floor, clutching her phone to her chest. They are quick to try to comfort her, try to find out what’s wrong, and when they finally come her down enough for her to speak, Marinette looks at the time with big sad eyes and just asks, “Are you, my dad?”
Sabine and Tom are stunned at first, then her question hits them, and realization slowly inches onto their faces. And its all the answer Marinette needs.
Tom loves the little girl he raised so much and as much as he wished he wasn’t her biological father, “In every way that counts I am,” He assures his little girl, “Except blood. But I am your dad. You are my daughter.”
Sabine apologizes for withholding the truth for so long, “We were a family. I was scared,” She admits.
Cue huge family hug.
A few days go by before Marinette has the courage to ask about her biological father, “Who was he?” She suddenly asked. “My father?” The question caused Sabine to stumble and cause an entire cake to hit Tom in the face.
“His name is Brian,” Sabine said as she handed Marinette an old picture of a young sabine with a handsome blonde man with startling blue eyes, Marinette’s eyes, at a food truck near palm trees. “Brian O’Conner. I met him on a beach in LA. I thought he had a serial killer name. He was wild and beautiful, and so free. You’re a lot like him. You have his eyes and his smile. And his heart.”
Marinette stared at the man in the picture, wondering if he too was clumsy if he was the reason she loved to go fast too because she liked to go really, really fast on her bike if he was where she got her daringness, her need to the right thing. “Does he know about me?”
“No,” Her mom answered, “I had already left for Paris by the time I found out. I didn’t want to upheave his life.” Truthfully, she didn’t know how to tell her daughter that her biological father had been a street racer, on the run from the police and spent quite a bit of time in hiding.
It took an hour after Sabine left Marinette along with the picture for the young girl to get angry. Who was this man? What was so important about his life that her mother wouldn’t dare wreck. Marinette was going to find out.
It took some time but with a little research and luck, Marinette was able to find Brian was still in L.A.
Marinette bought a plane ticket using her mom’s credit card, packed a bag, left a note for parents, and left in the middle of the night on a flight to Los Angeles. It had been tricky. Some people asked questions but Marinette just she was visiting her dad in the U.S. She was glad her mom made her learn English as a second language, though now it was obvious as to why.
It took a few hours and had taken a lot different buses, but Marinette found herself standing in front of a white house that was erupting with noise.
“A party?” Marinette asked quietly.
The bluenette swallowed hard and fought the urge to run away. She had come too far. Ignored too many of her parents’ phone calls to back down. She just texted then every day that she was okay and that she would be home soon.
           Marinette rang the doorbell.
A tall, bald, handsome, laughing black man answered the door. He nodded at the young girl, “Can I help you?” Girl scout, he thought.
Marinette clutched the strap of her pink bag, “Is Brian O’Connor here?”
Rome’s eyes squinted as he surveyed the girl and then he noticed her eyes. He knew those eyes. The biggest smile spread over his face. “This gonna be good,” He said. “Name’s Roman. Or Rome. Come on inside, my new favorite person in the world.”
Marinette followed the man into the house. She was right. There was a loud, movie-worthy party going on. The music was loud, strange people were dying. She felt more than a little weary and a little claustrophobic.  She looked around but didn’t see who she was looking for.
One by one the guest of the party noticed the little girl in pink with pigtails in the room. The music slowly died down. A scary bald man, in a dark wife-beater, with a beer (Corona, Marinette read) and had been laughing with a scruffy breaded man when she entered the room, slowly lost his smile when he noticed her.
He was possibly the scariest man Marinette had never laid eyes on.
“YO Brian,” Roman yelled, the smile still huge on his face. “You got company!”
All eyes turned to her. The scary man got out of his seat and stared at her.
“Oh this can’t be good,” Taj said to Suki, who nodded.
Again Marinette fought the urge to run. She glanced at the floor and bit her lip.
“What’s up, man?” A new voice called which caused her to look back up.
Marinette’s breath caught in her throat a blond man with a case of beers in his hand entered the room. He had aged but he was still as handsome as his picture. Her eyes suddenly stung.
Roman waved at hand from Brian to Marinette.
Brian looked at the girl who, to him, didn’t look much older than seven or eight, maybe. Was she lost? Did she need his help? “Can I help you?”
           Heads swerved to the girl.
“Do you remember a woman named Sabine Cheng?” Marinette asked, feeling braver at the mentioned of her mother. “She is my mother.”
Heads swerved back to Brian. Particularly Dom’s who at a sneaking suspicion about what the hell was going on.
Brian’s head was suddenly filled with a beautiful laughing Asian girl, with kind eyes and a don’t fuck with my personality. She had fierce and amazing. Brian had been a little disappointed when Sabine had left for France. Which explained the little girl accent. He hadn’t seen Sabine in what… seven years. A little longer.
His blue eyes’ widened. The beers slipped from his hands and crashed hard onto the floor. “Fuck!”
That was all anyone needed to know exactly what was going on.
“This some Maury shit,” Vince said and took a swallow from here.
Letty nodded, “You are the father.” Those eyes did not lie.
The girl’s blue eyes, his eyes, widened and she took a hasty step back when the beers crashed and shattered onto the floor. “I shouldn’t- I shouldn’t have come,” She quickly said. “I’m sorry. I-”
She just wanted to meet him. She needed to meet him. Finding out her dad wasn’t really her dad, dad. Marinette just needed to do something.
Tears welled up in her eyes. Marinette turned for the door.
“That’s enough!” A strong voice said. Marinette turned to see the scary man looking directly at her. “Everyone who isn’t family out. Party’s over. You,” Dom pointed at Marinette, “Stay there.”
There were grumbles from the party guests as they left. But Marinette was surprised just how many people stayed.
“Name’s Dom,” The terrifying guy introduced.
“Marinette,” She said back. “Do you ever lose that scary look on your face.”
“No,” Taj said. “No, he doesn’t” Dom glared at him. “That just makes it worse.”
Brian shoved a hand through his hair. He was shaking. “Are you?” He asked. “I mean, do you like? Daughter?” He managed.
“Translation: You his kid?” Rome smirked.
Brian nodded frantically.  Yes, that’s what he meant.
“I found out a few days ago,” Marinette shrugged. “Mom told me about you.”
“I didn’t know,” Brian suddenly blurted out. “I never knew. I swear. I’d have never. I would never. I mean, you know. I’d want to.”
“He didn’t about you,” Roman translated. “He’d never walked out on his kid.”
Dom looked over the small, French, Asian girl who shared his husband’s eyes. There were more similarities than the obvious one; her nose, her cheekbones. There was no doubt it. Brian was a father.
And shit, that meant Dom was a stepfather.
“So what?” Letty asked, not unkindly. “Your mom tells you about Brian and just drops you off here?”
Marinette blushed and looked down again. It set off red flags in everyone’s head. “She doesn’t know…” She admitted. “I left her a note though!” She added.
Roman leaned against the wall. “You find out about Brian, decided what the hell, ditch Paris and run off to a California to find him, with just a note to your Ma.” He snorted. “That’s your kid, alright.”
“Shut up,” Brian hissed. He pinched his nose. “Call your mom.”
“No.”
“She needs to know your alright,” Brian insisted.
“She will,” Marinette promised. “After we talk.”
Brian crossed his eyes and looked sternly at… his daughter, “This isn’t a negotiation.”
Marinette crossed her arms, “Wanna bet?”
Blue eyes and Blue eyes glared at each other. Making the resemblance between the two even more clear as, much to the occupants of the room dismay, stubbornness was inherited.
Dom just sighed. This was going to be his life now. At least he’ll get a laugh out of watching Brian deal with a mini Brian. Stubborn, reckless, little shit that he was; he deserved a little krama.
An hour later, it was clear Marinette had won. She got the talk she wanted. And found out some things about her new Papa. He was married to the scary guy, had been around the world, had been a cop. Loved cars. The people in the house were all family.
“Call me Uncle Rome,” Roman introduced. “I’m the reason your dad lived long enough to have you.
“Mia,” A pretty kind woman with long dark hair said, “Dom’s sister. He’s great when you get to know him.”
“Letty,” A fierce woman said.
After that, there was Taj, Vince, Suki, Han, and quite a few others that made her head spin trying to remember them.
Then she called her parents. They were not happy. Then Brian got on the phone to speak with her mom. He left the room.
Within minutes there was yelling. A lot of yelling. When Brian came back, he looked angry and somewhat relieved. “You’re staying for the summer,” He told her. “We’re going to get to know each other. “You have to call home. Every. Day. Your mom will send some of your stuff.”
The next day, Marinette and Dom found themselves sitting across from each other at the breakfast table. A protectiveness had grown in Dom over the night. Because he realized if this was Brian’s daughter, then it was his daughter.
There was a living, breathing kid he was now responsible for too.
Dom sat across from her and briefly wondered Mia kept any of her old barbies. And if that would be insulting to offer them to the girl. “How old are you?” He asked her.
“Eight,” She answered shyly.
Not barbies then. Boys, then. Mia got into boys just about her age. Oh god, he can’t deal with boys right now. He’d go back to prison.
“How long have you and Papa been married?”
“Almost six years,” He answered.
“Why don’t you have kids?” She asked brightly. “Did you want kids?”
It was a trap. Dom knew it. Brian liked to do the same thing. “We want you.”
           She smirked, “Nice answer.”
Brian came in with plates full of pancakes a few seconds later. Marinette was pleased t see hers had a smily face.
“I was thinking we could go to the beach today,” The blond said. “Get to know each other more.” He nodded to his husband. “As a family.”
           And so they did.
Marinette spent the entire summer with her Papa and Pops (Dom) and her newfound family, and every summer after. Through them she got into mechanics and cars. Though she still developed a love for fashion. She met a fascinating man named Shaw, and his brother, who taught her how to fight. She met a lioness of a woman named Monica and her husband Carter Verone who just taught her how to be scary.
It was just after she turned thirteen, and she became Ladybug, did Marinette forget just how protective her family was.
It was Sunday. There was a family barbeque. Everyone was there. Marinette was in the kitchen helping Mia clean up when she got a text from Luka. (Adrien was so not her type. Thanks to Letty, Monica, Mia, Suki, she developed a rather fierce nature and decided she’d only date guys with a backbone.) She didn’t realize as she texted back than a dreamy expression appeared on her face, because… well, Luka.
“Who you texting?” Letty asked with an eyebrow raised.
Marinette blushed, “No one.” She hissed back.
“Does no one have a name?” Mia smiled.
           Marinette looked down, “Luka.”
“Who the fuck Luka?” Vince yelled, having overheard the conversation. “Dom you know your kid’s got some boy textin her?”
There was a crash. A few crashes actually.
Dom stomped in, grabbed Marinette’s phone, “NO!” he said and walked off.
Marinette groaned. She hoped this wouldn’t be the surfer boy from down the street all over again. His family had to move.
It was a year, and one accidentally overseen transformation did her family find out she was a superhero named Ladybug and had been fighting a terrorist for almost two years. It didn’t take long to find online videos of all her rights. Of how many times she had nearly died.
Brian seethed in anger, unable to speak.
Hobbs and Monica just nodded at each other. Each texting their agency of what had been taking place in Paris. Apparently, the mayor had been hiding it to prevent tourism from declining.
Deckard Shaw was torn. On one hand, he was proud of his niece. She had handled herself well. On other hand that some of bitch Hawkmoth had to pay. No one fucked with his family. Mask or now, magical powers or not, Shaw going to find him.
And who the hell let a teenage girl be Superhero? With not nearly enough training. That asshole was gonna pay too.
Dom just sat his beer down, his eyes still trained on the image of Hawkmoth on the TV, the son of a bitch who had tried to kill his kid, who terrorized a bunch of school children, and all of Paris. and said, “Oh, it’s on.”
The Fast and Furious team was going to Paris.

Fandom racism anon here and yeah absolutely (I didn't realise I had anon on lol)
Because while LOTR has problems within its themes (ie the orcs can be seen as to be coded as people of colour, especially since they ride elephants) the explicit message of the book is evil bad
Because the only people who work for sauron are evil. There are no morally grey people, they aren't misguided or tricked they just are evil and want to take over the world
And yeah I totally agree that this is more of a literal take on like empirical war (is that the word) and that makes total sense considering Tolkiens history
Whereas I would say that the allegories in shaowhunters is way more based on racial conflict within a country itself especially slavery, I can't remember if this is show Canon but is it that they have the warlock tropheys? I remember that in the books magnus talks about shadowhunters hanging warlock marks on their walls? (sorry to bring the books up)
Idk it's very hollow to me, unlike with LOTR though it's a different allegory it's totally irritating to show many of these supremecists as morally misled. LOTR says bad guys are bad guys, shadowhunters says well yeah they did follow a guy which thinks that downworlders are subhuman and should be eradicated but they just made a mistake
I want to compare this to tfatws which while it isn't really fantasy I just feel like it shows how the priorities of the writer can impact the message of the show so powerfully (I know u aren't up to date so I'm gonna be pretty vague)
There's a scene in tfatws where the new white perfect captain America does something bad and doesn't pay for the consequences - done to comment on white privelege and how America condones white supremacy and how Sam is in comparison to that
Mayrse and Robert revealed to be part of the circle! And paid no consequences Shock horror my parents were the bad guys (even rho they were either implicitly or explicitly extremely racist the entire time) also I haven't finished the seires but do the lightwoods ever try to get their parents to face the consequences?)
Only one actual really critiques the situation and the reality behind it whereas the other one is just to centre the white characters once again and present them in a further sympathetic light
AND ANOTHER THING! I was mostly talking about show Canon here and I'm sorry to bring up the books but I literally can't believe I hadn't picked up in this before.
So like downworlders = people of colour, Simon is a vampire so is coded as a person of colour. However in the books in the last one he stops being a vampire and becomes a shadowhunters instead, coincidentally that's also when he starts dating Izzy HOW IS THIS ABLE TO HAPPEN!!????
I mean I know cassandra clare is lazy right? The original seires is by far the worst of all her writings but come ON!!!!! By the allegory has he become the white man!????? These books made no fuckin sense when I read them at 15 and they make no sense now I'm digressing anyways
I don't know man I wrote this ask because I was trying to find some fantasy book recommendations on booktube and SO MANY of them were about slavery or general ly extrême préjudice with à White protagonist to save this 'poor souls'.
Also I was watching guardians of the galexy the other day and realised nearly every movie set in space is just bigger stakes imperialism - planets instead of countries. Literally star wars, star trek, guardians of the galexy 2, avengers infinity war - all are facing genocidal imperialistic villains without actually paying much, if any attention to those effected
Just writing this ask made me exhausted I'm so tired of lazy writing and exploiting other people's struggle. I'm white and I'm trying to be more critical about the movies, shows and books I watch and read but let me know if I said something off here❤️❤️ you gotta get up to date with tfatws man, Sambucky nation is THRIVING!!!!
i'm not sure i agree that the whole "the evil people are evil" thing is a good thing, because i feel like more often than not making the bad characters just like... unidimensionally evil just means that the reader will be like "lol i could NEVER be that guy" and when it comes to racism that is a dangerous road to take because white people already believe that racism is something that Only The Most Evil People, Ergo, Not Me, Can Do, which makes discussions of stuff like subconscious racial bias and active antiracist work become more difficult because people don't believe they CAN be racist unless they're like, Lord Voldemort
which is not to say that racism should be treated as morally ambiguous, just that the workings of racism should be represented as something that is not done only by the Most Hardcore And Evil, but rather as a part of a system of oppression that affects the way everyone sees the world and interacts with it and lives in it
yes the warlock trophies are mentioned in the show, albeit very quickly (there is a circle member who tells magnus that his cat eyes will make "a nice addition to his collection" and then it's never mentioned again because this is sh and we love using racism for shock value but then not actually treating it as a serious plot point or something that affects oppressed ppl). and you are absolutely right, shadowhunters (and hp, and most fantasy books) has genocide as its core conflict and treats it, like you said, in a very hollow way, treating racism as both not a big deal and not something that is part of a system of oppression, but really the actions of a few Very Bad People. it's almost impressive how they manage to do both at the same time tbh
i think you hit the nail right on the head with this comment, actually. for most of these works, racism is SHOCK VALUE. it's just like "lol isn't it bad that this bad guy wants to kill a gazillion people just because they are muggles? now that is fucked up" but it's not actually an issue. in fact, when this guy is defeated, the whole problem is over! racism is not something that is embedded into that world, it's not a systemic issue, it's not even actually part of what drives the plot. the things that led to this person not only existing but rising to power and gathering enough followers to be a real threat to the whole world are never mentioned. it's like racists are born out of thin air, which is dangerously close to implying that racism is just a natural part of life, tbh
anyway my point is, it is never supposed to be questioned, it is never part of a deeper plot or story, its implications are barely addressed except for a few fleeting comments them and there; so, it's not a critique, it's shock value, even though it is frequently disguised as a critique (which is always empty and shallow anyway. like what is the REAL critique in works like hp or sh/tsc other than "genocide is bad"? wow such a groundbreaking take evelyn)
about simon and the book thing: i actually knew about this and the weird thing about this is that, like... simon is jewish, and he's implied to be ashkenazi (calls his grandma bubbe which is yiddish, which is a language spoken by the ashkenazi ppl), and it seems like cc is always toeing the line between him being accepted by shadowhunters and then not accepted by them, which sounds a lot like antisemitic tropes and history of swinging between (ashkenazi) jewish ppl being seen as the model minority myth and thus used as an example by white christians, and being hated and persecuted. i'm not super qualified to talk about this since i'm not jewish and i'm still learning about/unlearning antisemitism and its tropes, and i don't really have a fully formed thought on that, tbh; it just reminds me of the whole "model minority" swinging, where one second simon is part of the majority, the other he's not, but always he is supposed to give up a part of himself and his identity in other to be "assimilated" by shadowhunter culture. this article (link) covers a book on jewish people and assimilationism into USan culture, this article (link) covers british jews' relationship with being considered an ethnic group, and this article (link) talks a bit about the model minority myth from the perspective of an asian jewish woman
it just really calls to my attention that cc chose to make her ashkenazi jewish character start off as a downworlder and then become a shadowhunter. i don't think she made that decision as a conscious nod to this history, because it would require being informed on antisemitism lol but it's incredible how you can always see bigoted stereotypes shining through her narrative choices completely by accident. it just really shows how ingrained it is in our collective minds and culture
and anyway, making a character go from the oppressed group to just suddenly become the oppressor is just. wtf. not how oppression works, but most of all, really disrespectful, especially because she clearly treats it as an "upgrade"/"glowup" that earns him the Love Of His Life
also, out of curiosity, are you french? it seems like your autocorrect changed a few words and i'm pretty sure extrême and préjudice are the french versions of these words, and since u said ur white, that's where my money would be lol
