from this ask meme
Thank you! 😁 Sorry this took a while, I received this in the middle of the night then I went about my work day and celebrated my birthday heh
3. does your country have access to sea?
Yes! We’re an archipelago so there is sea EVERYWHERE. (I don’t live by the coast, though)
6. most hated song in your native language?
I hate this one A LOT, it’s a super tacky rap song about choosing between DOTA or your girlfriend…
8. do you get confused with other nationalities? if so, which ones and by whom?
Probably with other Southeast Asians, like Indonesians and Malaysians? And maybe with Latinos because of the shared Spanish heritage.
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language?
“Tangina” is probably my favorite! It’s short for “putang ina” (which is considered VERY vulgar) and it literally means “whore mother.” (Here is a list of Filipino swears.)
12. what do you think about English translations of your favourite native prose/poem?
Most of my favorite Filipino writers actually write in English (a legacy of American colonization), so I guess there’s no issue? But my mom has said that English translations of Noli Me Tangere (our big important Filipino novel, we read it in high school) don’t do justice to the Filipino version. Though the original is in Spanish…
13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders?
We celebrate Christmas as early as September (the malls will start playing Christmas carols by then)
The Feast of the Black Nazarene is a big religious feast here, it has a TON of devotees, the number of people who come out during the feast is just staggering. It’s actually become a concern recently because of the amount of trash that it generates
During Good Friday, a few people (though certainly not all!) actually self-flagellate and have themselves nailed to crosses, even the Church frowns on the practice
