Sorry I'm on a bit of a haterade streak today but I've got more frustrations with SJM as an author:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of these descriptions are about either villains or POCs. "Not beautiful, but striking." Oooookkkk...interesting. Why you gotta say "not beautiful?" You could just say striking and stunning or something. But she goes out of her way to emphasize they're "not beautiful." Huh.

QUEEN OF SHADOWS SPOILERS
This scene is where I loose any sense of sanity
Quietly, Aedion said, “Dorian.”
“Tell me what happened in the throne room, Dorian,” … The prince blinked slowly. “Nothing happened.”
“Sorscha,” Aedion breathed, his lungs aching. “Sorscha—your woman, the healer. I was standing beside you when they cut off her head. I heard you screaming as you dove for her body.”
“Where did they bury her, Dorian? What did they do with her body, the body of the woman you loved?” … “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” it said again.
“Sorscha,” Aedion panted, his breathing uneven. “Her name was Sorscha, and she loved you— and they killed her. The man who put that collar around your neck killed her.”

To those who say: “I don’t want gwynriel bc I don’t want gwyn to be azriel’s ‘third choice¡!’ ”
I say: I’m cool with that because third times the charm- and we know sjm lovesss her threes <3
Also, first, second, third (fourth, fifth, etc.) choice is not as important as the right choice.
(TOG Spoilers)
Had Aelin had her choice at age 17, she would have been with Sam forever.
Had Aelin not become the Kings Champion, Dorian would have still been her choice over Chaol.
Had Chaol not "betrayed" Aelin (or what she felt was a betrayal), she would have never gone on to choose Rowan.
Had Dorian had his way, he would have ended up with Aelin. When that didn't work, his choice would have been Sorscha. But in the end it appears his endgame was Manon.
If Az had his way, Mor would have returned his love.
If Elain had her way, Graysen would have not rejected her when stood before him and said her heart belonged to him.
SJM doesn't really seem to care about choice while a character is still being developed and I think that's something that certain readers don't grasp. Many of these characters had choice taken out of their hands because their first or second or third choice wasn't going to be the right person for who they became and the choice they made when younger probably wouldn't have been the right choice for them as they matured, even if they had gotten what they wanted. But all the things that happened, the rejections, the tragedies, etc. are what led them to the person they were supposed to be with, the person they chose after all those experiences, the person they chose after they finally grew into who they were meant to be.
Gwyn might not be Az's choice right at this moment because he's not had his growth. He's kind of a mess right now and his choices are a reflection of that.
So I don't care what number Gwyn is in his line up of "choices" so much as I want her to only become an option when he's evolved enough to make good decisions for the right reasons.

I'm on a roll with the s/j/m hatred tn so I'm going to compile a masterlist of all her shitty lgbt/poc representation and why it sucks booty cheeks. it should be noted that none of this is meant as shade on any of the characters themselves... I actually happen to like quite a lot of them
EDIT: there are some nice additions to this post in the notes you can check out
LGBT rep
Aedion (Bi/Pan)
Literally known as “Adarlan’s Whore” (a nickname that references both his allegiance to the king and his tendency to sleep around)
His only same-sex relationship is with a vaguely-mentioned unnamed lover from the past (it’s not even said straight-up that they’re a man, but I’m assuming they are bc they’re mentioned to be a commander of the Bane)
He’s shown being attracted to women and only women for two and a half books. He’s a womanizer retconned into the slutty bisexual stereotype
His liking men & women is compared to prostitution
It’s insinuated in koa that he slept with an ex while he and Lysandra were fighting (because the cheating bisexual trope is such a new & creative one!)
Helion (Bi/Pan)
He’s always trying to have 4somes with three of the main characters
Realistically he’s probably one of the most powerful/interesting High Lords but this gets sidelined in favor of him flirting with eVeRyOnE
All we really know about him is his name and the fact that he’s a bit of a manwhore… very 2-dimensional
He has an affair & a child with a married woman… just the Slutty/Cheating Bisexual Trope (Volume 2) :/
Mor (Lesbian? Possibly bi?)
She’s never shown in any real relationships (with men or women)
She had tragic off-screen relationship with a mortal queen a few hundred years ago
We get literally no hints that she’s gay throughout the series, she just randomly mentions she likes women at the end of book 3
She gets no happy relationship, she stays closeted to spare Az’s feelings (as though he’s not a grown ass man), she’s retconned into her sexuality most of the way through the series… just shitty shitty rep all around
Hasar (Lesbian)
She’s a villain, and a shitty one at that
Lesbian rep from a side character in one novella that half the fandom didn’t read? What’s even the point?
Thesan (Gay)
A very minor character & his unnamed “lover” who serve no narrative purpose whatsoever… thanks for nothing sarah
Emrys & Malachai (Presumably gay)
Oh look! More minor, background mlm that might as well not exist for all they do for the story :/
They are cute though, I’ll give them that
POC rep
Nehemia
First (and only) black main in ToG
She dies to fuel the white protag’s character arc… a very tired trope
She was actually a pretty well-written, likable character up until her brutal murder, which made it that much worse to hear about her organs strewn all over the room
Sorscha
Described as “plain” (particularly in contrast to the white women like Aelin & Lysandra)
We know she’s POC because of where she’s from, but the way her features are described suggest she could still be white
Dark hair, gold eyes, “tan” skin
She really just fawns over white-boy Dorian every 2 seconds before dying a violent death to fuel Dorian’s arc…
…Aaaand I’m sensing a pattern here
Nesryn
Much of her character (especially in QoS) is reduced to her beefing with Aelin (and thus being villanized by the narrative) because of jealousy over Chaol
Simply described as having “tan” skin (again). I think sarah is allergic to calling people brown
She is also described as plain compared to white protagonist
She has a (presumably middle eastern) family that only wants her to stay home and be a baker/someone’s wife
Yrene
Once again very racially ambiguous to the point where she could even be white, with “tan/golden” skin, golden hair, and golden eyes
She almost immediately ties her literal life force to a white man she hated like a month ago. Seriously, can WOC not fawn over a hunky white man for once?
She defeats erawan in the end — considering she’s been a character for such a short time, this just feels more like a deus ex machina the anything really set up by the plot
Helion
Not going to fully rehash what I said above but generally… he has great potential, but is basically not a character
Tarquin
He’s portrayed as very nice and reasonable, if young and naive, yet he literally only exists to get manipulated/robbed by the main characters
He seems like such a sweetheart. He deserved much better than Riceman and Feyrug doing him dirty like that
I’ve heard rumors of a High King/Queen F*ysand plotline in later books…if that happens, Tarquin will likely be bending the knee and forgiving the people who fucked him over just a short time ago
Lucien
He’s described as very caring and loyal (yay!) which seems to always get him taken advantage of (damn!)
He’s portrayed (especially in ACOWAR) as someone we’re supposed to dislike when all his actions are perfectly reasonable
He’s literally retconned out of being white when it’s revealed Helion is his father instead of Beron. I’ve seen ppl get mad at “white-washed” fan art but it’s hard to expect much else when his original character description was straight red hair, amber eyes,  and “tan” skin (holy shit agAIN)
The people of the White Fangs from TOG
They’re described as having black hair, black eyes, and “tan” skin
They live isolated in the mountains (away from civilization) and are described as “savage” and warlike, always raiding villages in the mountains and stealing women away from their homes…
Cain, who’s from these people, dabbles in dark magic/religion nobody else understands
This is feeling, intentional or not, like a horrible Native American caricature. Idk maybe that’s just me

This may just be me, but does anyone else feel like the ToG fandom portrays Dorian as being this like cutesy nice guy pining after Manon? I feel like that is just not the truth… after all she is the one who proposed to him after all lmao bye
Dorian is also one of the most complex characters, he’s so super jaded from Sorscha like he’s not the same kid who kissed Celeana.

Antis have this “explanation “ that elriel won’t happen because lucien and gwyn will end alone and sjm likes happy endings. First that’s a kindergarten level reason. Second lucien could end with vassa and third What part of the books hints that gwyn is ready for romance? I understand I like gwyn and I want her to be happy and I will love for her to find love one day but her arc was not about that on acosf. The only valkyrie other than nesta that was hinted to have a romantic interest was emerie because she blush when she saw mor. Gwyn went back to the library I don’t think love is her priority right now. I totally believe we will see more of her in future books but that’s it.
At the end of the day antis could be right only sjm knows but Sjm would have to write a really good explanation of all those eriel hints.
Yes, firstly, it's an extremely juvenile reasoning 'everyone has to end up with a love interest', but also, it's not true and SJM is often very ruthless with side characters actually.
(LOTS OF TOG AND CC SPOILERS BELOW)
A couple of other things:
Main characters don't end up with secondary characters. It's determined pretty early one who is going to be one of the mains, and then 'mains-mains' and it's always like that.
There are 6 main characters in ACOTAR: 3 sisters and 3 bat boys. It's about them.
Lucien is always a supporting character, from day one, and he will end up with a secondary character such as Vassa and not an Archeron sister. Same with Elain--she is not going to end up with someone like Jurian, who is present, but is a secondary character.
Same happened with Aelin, for example. Rowan was set up as a main early on, once he was introduced. He wasn't a friend of a friend, or whatever. But, Fenrys WAS a friend of a friend (namely a friend of Rowan's) and that's why, despite everything, and arguably, you could say that Fenrys and Aelin were incredibly close and went through hell together, she still ended up with Rowan, and not Fenrys.
And guess what--Fenrys, despite his importance, fan popularity and beauty, in fact, did end up without a LI.
I think another good example is Asterin--if we compare Asterin to Gwyn, Asterin was also a warrior, a friend to a major character (Manon, one of the mains), has a horrible backstory and in the end, she was killed.
Sorscha, another secondary character was killed as well. I mean, we can go on and on, secondary characters (even very beloved ones) get killed off frequently--Gavriel, Danika, Connor, and even in relationships such as Dorian x Manon, and Lorcan x Elide, there is an element of sadness, since we know that Manon is immortal and Dorian isn't, and Lorcan would become mortal for Elide.
I think that there are perfectly 'sacrificable' characters in ACOTAR, and we are long overdue for some deaths. I feel that some would include:
Helion
Eris
Gwyn
LOA
Mor or Amren
Tarquin
Varian
Tamlin
Clotho
Jurian
I think that Lucien is PROBABLY safe, because he has a story attached to him.
Gwyn doesn't really have a story, other than maybe being a LS and being a Valkyrie, but that doesn't mean she is safe.
SJM killed off the Suriel and the Bone Carver, and we have very few truly secondary characters left, so I wouldn't get too confident.
I think the only ones truly safe are the Bat Boys and the Archeron Girls.

DID I SEE SOMETHING? (Spoilers for Acotar and Tog)
Okay, so you know how when Feyre and Tamlin and Lucien and are all together, they're all like, "IF I give you the moon on a string, will you give me a kiss too?"
WELL. I was reading heir of fire again, (ROWAN💖) AND WHEN SORSCHA AND DORIAN ARE CUDDLING, AND SORSCHA SAYS,
" IF I ASKED FOR THE MOON ON A STRING?"
I SCREAMED. I don't know if this has been mentioned before in the community or whatever, or if this is just a cute nugget, but does anyone else find it weird the similarities between Dorian and Lucien? Both of their lovers were be-headed by their Fathers, They lost all their friends (unfairly, in my opinion) and Lucien says exactly what Sorscha did? is it a common saying in their universe or something?
Idk. BUT OMG-

ToG Read-A-Long, Heir of Fire, Day 5
29
YEAH SORSCHA GET IT HONEY
Aedion to Chaol: “I didn’t think that kind of honor still existed in Adarlan.”
FR!!!! Why on EARTH is he going through with it, except for the vague sense of duty, of honor. Going to Anielle is… I guess good for his family? but who cares?! His family should be proud of him for being a member of the king’s guard…. Like, is that not important to them?
(I know he promised but the situation is still so stupid to me) (your dad is so stupid Chaol) (and boring) (stop letting him control you)
Aedion is so cool, though
Hes the only SJM man not to have daddy issues
(Cause he has no dad)
(Hey good for you Aedion) (you’re quickly becoming my favorite boy)
30
So, who are the guys
And
Why do they wanna kill Ren
They belong to the king? But not in the same legion as Chaol, somehow?
I wanna solve this mystery but I feel like I’ve got nothing to go on
31 manon please I love you so much
32
Manon and Abraxos taking flight feels like the music swelling in a moment of triumph in a 90’s movie, It’s like Free Willy it’s like the Neverending Story, it’s everything it’s EVERYTHING.
33 ok so hear me out
Rowan should open a tattoo shop for pansexual fae
Ugh, I actually thought her heart was HEALING. Guess not. She’s back on her anguish. (Poor Celaena.)
34 back on her anguish big time,
I am actually still torn up about Nehemia too, so, I get it. But girl. You can be sad without making it everyone else’s problem. Be nice to my boy Emrys. He’s literally so loveable, how dare you make him feel bad.
Idk what Rowan even did? Except not be a good friend, I guess, but like, she’s in such a tender place it’s really HARD to be friendly to her. I think he’s doing alright being the aloof handsome magic teacher…. And I think he’s a pretty good teacher. She needs space before she’ll welcome anything close to what she had with Nehemia.
Anyway that scene rescuing Luca was cute
Build back the ability to have friends and get close to people
You got this, girl
I believe in you
35
Idk what’s wrong with me lol
But I DID like seeing her beat him up and him just taking it
Somehow when he started talking about his dead mate all I could think was… wait they’re not mates? I know, I know, it’s a different book than ACOTAR, but I just expected them to be mated to each other.
And then I was like, wait….
Because, based from her other work - when you are a faerie, the most important thing, the highest calling in life and the truest happiness you will ever know, is finding your mate. And if your mate dies, that’s probably so devastating…
Anyway, WHAT IF, what if, Aelin lost her mate too? What if her mate was Nehemia???
(Remember when she said it was like a piece of her soul was gone)
(like she had lost a “soul friend”)
What if, because she was mortal the whole time, she just never noticed that Nehemia was her mate. And now she’s coming into her abilities and at the same time experiencing the real anguish of knowing that Nehemia is dead.
I think it could be real interesting to watch them come together as survivors, who have gone through the loss of a mate, and they could like, grow closer and trauma bond over that. Not many people know how it feels. I feel like it would be kind of an interesting spin on the “fated mates” trope. Idk.
Wrapping up the first part of the book. I’m invested. Also, I’m gonna be on vacation for the next week, and I’ll take this book with me, but idk if I’ll be on here posting my daily reactions!
I will if I can make time for it, but no promises. My flight returns may 1st, when we will be reading the Assassin’s Blade!

Valg Collars x Asteri Halos
!! Spoilers for HoF and HoSaB !!
as if the massive cliffhanger at the end of HoSaB didn’t have me worried enough, the end of HoF and the events of QoS gave me a major panic when i noticed the similarities between the descriptions of Dorian receiving his collar and Hunt receiving his halo. These comparisons are operating under the theory that the asteri are valg or at least something very similar.
The halo Rigelus gives Hunt could be an unoccupied valg collar.
Looking into both texts there are similarities and differences, but differences in the worlds and the ability of the valg/asteri to travel between them can help to explain them.
Dorian’s experience with the valg collar:
HoF CH 67
He had just touched Sorscha’s limp hand when cool stone gripped his throat, there was a faint click and hiss, and the darkness swept in to tear him apart.
QoS CH 1
He could not remember his name.
That was the first thing he’d forgotten when the darkness enveloped him weeks or months or eons ago. Then he’d forgotten the names of the others who had meant so much to him. He could recall horror and despair—only because of the solitary moment that kept interrupting the blackness like the steady beat of a drum: a few minutes of screaming and blood and frozen wind.
There was nothing but that moment, again and again and again—and that thing pacing nearby, waiting for him to break, to yield, to let it in. A prince.
He could not remember if the thing was the prince, or if he himself had once been a prince
There was still a real world beyond the shadows. He was forced to participate in it by the man who had ordered the slaughter of that lovely woman. And when he did, no one noticed that he had become hardly more than a marionette, struggling to speak, to act past the shackles on his mind.
Hunt’s experience getting the halo from Rigelus:
HoSaB CH 77
Rigelus laid his glowing hand on Hunt’s brow and pain erupted through his skull, his muscles, his blood. As if the very marrow of his bones were being burned into mist.
The Asteri’s power slithered and spiderwebbed across Hunt’s brow, piercing into him with every spike of the halo’s thorns that Rigelus tattooed there.
Hunt screamed then. It echoed off the stones, off the Gate.
The pain across Hunt’s brow became blinding, his vision splintering.
The halo kept spreading over his skull, worse than any gorsian shackle. His power writhed in its iron grip, no longer his to fully command. Just as his own life, his freedom, his future with Bryce … Gone.
Hunt screamed again, and as darkness swept in to claim him, he wondered if that soul-scream, not the halo, was what Rigelus wanted.
Then Hunt knew nothing at all.
Both Dorian and Hunt describe their enslavement as darkness sweeping in. They also both describe loosing their memories and identities, loss of control over their bodies and lives, and an emphasis placed on their emotional pain. While we don’t get a ton of Hunt’s perspective after the beginning of his second enslavement thanks to the cliffhanger, we know that it is different from his original enslavement in that Rigelus himself created the halo rather than having a medwitch perform the enchantment. One of the major differences is that Dorian can feel the valg prince inside of him, while Hunt doesn’t. I think this can be explained by the fact that the asteri in CC are cut off from others of their race, while the valg in ToG have easy access to fill the vessels created by the rings and collars in Erilea. It seems like the asteri are still able to create vessels, but with no other valg to fill them the host just feels empty, which is why Dorian was able to maintain some consciousness involving the valg inside of him and what the prince was doing, while Hunt “knew nothing at all.” While there are a few differences between Dorian and Hunt’s experiences, the similarities in wording and emphasis support the idea that they are both being controlled by very similar forces.

In the hopes I’ll get motivated to work more on my manorian fic, and after seeing others here rereading tog, I’m doing a selective reread. Selective = Manon and Dorian chapters from QoS on 😁🗑
I think people are quick to forget how alone Dorian felt. Even before this, he seemed to use his sexual relationships with women (and probably men) to fill a void in his life. His father abused him, his mother only cared about finding him a queen. His best friend was in hiding at this point of the book. Aelin was across the world as far as he knew. Sorscha was dead.
It’s no wonder the valg was able to take him over by using all of his worst memories and self doubt against him.
So yeah. This lil nugget here just broke my heart.

Oooooo I just finished Heir of Fire. Took me forever (this week has been chaos) but I did it!! And oh my goodness. So. Many. Thoughts.
I’ve really liked the first two, but this one was just different. Could it be because I finally got to meet Rowan…? 🫢 Goodness, what a guy. But the story he shared with Aelin just about ripped my heart out 🥲
On the witches: I won’t lie I’m a little confused on their society/politics/whatever you call it? But I’m curious to see where it goes. What are your thoughts on Manon? So far, my opinion on her is kinda Meh. I want to like her because she seems like a badass but I just wasn’t able to get super into her storyline. Maybe that will change over the next few books.
Oh my lands, so much of Aelin’s journey was heart wrenching yet wildly inspiring. The EMOTIONS I FELT during the Get Up scene were out of hand. like I sat there for an hour probably, occasionally rereading it but mostly staring off into space.
AND ROWAN
Holy wow. At first I thought “he’s a jerk?! Why does everybody love him?” But now I have been enlightened. He is a “tough on you for your own good” kinda person, but he’s also so gentle and it made me melt.
Okay so I’ve luckily avoided most spoilers for ToG but I do know almost for sure that Aelin + Rowan are endgame, and lemme tell you sis: they’re now one of my favorites. I love that they slowly established a strong friendship built on trust; it felt a lot more realistic and was more pleasant to read (also they’re just hilarious together)
Lastly (I’m sorry this is so long) the ending had me feeling so many things. To start: Sorscha. I FELT SO BAD!! At the beginning I genuinely thought she was working with the king against Dorian and I didn’t like her one bit, THE ENDING MADE ME FEEL SO GUILTY!!! And now everything’s gone wrong because it’s a scientific law that no book in the middle of a series can have a happy ending. But at least Fleetfoot is okay 🥲
Okay, thank you so much for reading this thousand page essay of my chaotic mind. I’m so sorry. You have so much patience and I appreciate it 😅 I hope your week is going well my friend! 💕💕
Heir of Fire is a turning point in the series and where we see the bigger threads of the over arching plot come into play. That's why so many people love it. And I enjoyed it a lot too here in my last reread (the first two though are my favs of the series ngl). But yeah, there is something different about this book and is why I try and encourage people to read on to this one.
Because yes, Aelin's journey in this book is intense and indepth. Unlike any of her other books. In my opinion Aelin's healing arc within this book is top tier for Sarah. I love seeing her at rock bottom and how she comes up from that with those around her. And a lot of that has to do with Rowan.
And yeah...I did not like him. It took me a long time to warm up to him. Even after my first read of the series. I just was not attached to him. Fanfic helped with that though, haha! But he has a really great arc.
But the witches!!! First time reading, I loved them, second time, cool story. This last time--I did not like them. I just...idk. I feel like there was something missing from their build-up as a whole. Manon herself is interesting and I think we saw a lot of cool character set up and development with her, but over all, she isn't my favorite. I know there are so many in the fandom that love her and the witches as a whole. And I think their story line has its merits and is/was interesting to explore though. I feel like...well. it's not important. nvmnd.
but yeah, haha. this series bring out a lot of thoughts. haha. no worries at all. i love it.
