Why Death the kid has a point.
Recently, I have been re-watching Soul Eater. I remember liking it very much when i was younger. And one character i liked in particular was Death the Kid. His character design and funny, lavish moments entertained me throughout the series. From a surface-level standpoint, you might think that's all there is to his character: someone who is obsessed with symmetry.
However, after watching episodes 15 and 16, during the fight between Kid and Crona on the ship (the dragon), Kid's reasoning for his obsession with symmetry became very clear. He states the following: "I do not deny evil, nor do I deny the fact that no human is completely free of malice. Everything must be in balance. As long as evil and good maintain equal liberty in this world, there is no problem. Perfect balance is the key to everything."
Whether you agree with him or not, he doesn't care. Throughout the series, he fights to create that world. I think that his desire for a balance between good and evil in this world fits perfectly with his title as the grim reaper. Grim reapers are originally entities that take souls from people. whether they are good or bad. When it's time to die, they have to go. Grim reapers don't play favorites. They also don't go against their orders.
This statement made me realize that his idealistic vision of the world being balanced ties back into his obsession with symmetry. Although executed in a funny way for the sake of comedy, since it's still a shōnen anime. I do think that it's a great way to portray his character. You do see the disadvantages of kids' obsession with symmetry. He tends to lose some fights or get distracted over it.
This was just a short observation.
until next time!
