Kishin revival is one of the best horror animations I've seen period. The way it moves, the way the body shifts inside of the skin cocoon. Hits just right.
Also on the smaller note, the fact that they changed the ending after Maka befriended Crona just 🥲💕 *holds gently*

If im understanding this correctly. Kid also values Blackstar for his attitude of surpassing the gods because he provides him balance. Nobody has ever tried competing with Kid but now he has someone that not only makes his existence balanced, but is also a friend
Tumblr media
theyr really sweet together because Kid has always been Blackstar’s biggest supporter in becoming a god. And now Blackstar dives headfirst into madness and saves Kid from remembering how important having order in his life is. How meaningful his sisters and Blackstar are to his existence.
Tumblr media
this panel went crazy too. I’m not sure how exactly he means “your existence is too large” but its oddly sweet. Because Kid still sees Blackstar’s tremendous power, but now as a threat to his own lost worth from nothingness. He also says this right after the flashback of Kid always believing in Blackstar since one of the first moments they met. They are sooo.. i like to think there’s a hint of “your existence is too large for me to become nothingness” because of how complete the two make each other. Blackstar came to save Kid and also thank him for letting him reach his full potential and now he gets to help Kid develop his own identity of godhood. They both save each other and share so much appreciation, especially after Blackstar pledging himself to Kid that was crazy

Well that’s the 13th volume of Soul Eater and its Noah arc (ha) done, I thought it was pretty good. It’s a shame to see Giriko go out like that, he was super entertaining, but his death was a cool metaphor for how unending hatred crushes your soul (shoutouts to him for keeping it up for 800 years though, if only he hadn’t choked at the finish line). Kid and Black⭐️ Star’s fight scene in the Cthulhu void was pretty damn good, and the fight against Noah was also fun (though I wish Kiriko got to contribute more, as always).
This isn’t really directly related to anything that happened in the volume, but I realized after reading it that it’s kinda insane how fast the power level and antagonists ramped up from volume 1 to volume 13. Remember when the story was about fighting witches? Like regular witches in that coven that seemed important? Obviously there are several individual witches still relevant in the story, but witchkind as a whole kinda dropped out of the story and been replaced by chaos (which they seem to have no inherent relation to).
Don’t get me wrong, I like Asura and the concept of chaos just fine, but I really wish the story took a bit of time near the start (maybe between the Remedial Lessons arc and the Experiment arc) to have the gang fight some lower level, more individual foes. That’d be a great way to
Ease the insane ramp-up in villain power level/importance a bit. As things are right now, the Masamune arc (where an individual swordsman threatens the safety of one singular town) and the Big Bash arc (where one of the most powerful witches on earth attempts to free the mad god of chaos from his eldritch bindings and use him to rend the world asunder) are SEVEN CHAPTERS APART. Shit goes by fast and I would’ve appreciated a few buffer villains (preferably other non-Medusa-related witches) to ramp up the power level more gradually as the series progresses. As things are now, that prerequisite of “99 human souls and 1 witch soul” to become a Death Scythe kinda seems like the easiest shit ever (especially with Mifune demonstrating that one human soul can be strong enough to be worth 99 average human souls so time investment isn’t an issue, and Angela and Kim demonstrating that witch souls are inherently different from birth and have nothing to do with alignment or power level, meaning a meister could kill a literal newborn witch and that’d count towards becoming a Death Scythe)
Establish the characters a bit more. Soul Eater’s character’s are obviously very distinct and memorable, but when I was reading the first couple volumes I had trouble telling a few of them apart, it’d be nice to get a few more defining character interactions and dynamic, especially earlier in the series. In addition, this would be a great time to better introduce the B Team (Kiriko, Pot Siblings, Ox, Harvar, Kim, and Jackie), because they were kinda just thrown into the fray as “main characters but not really” midway through Brew, and as much as I love them they could definitely stand to get a bit more characterization and story. Like where are each of them from? Why’d they enroll in DWMA? How’d the weapons and meisters meet? Who gets along and who doesn’t? What are their individual goals and aspirations beyond graduating and beating the bad guys? What’s that stuff about Fire and Thunder being shamans? Is it similar to witch magic, thus giving them a potentially interesting dynamic with Kim as she sees the difference in societal acceptance between shamans witches despite their similarities? Jackie doesn’t seem to be a witch herself, and she probably wouldn’t have known Kim pre-DWMA if she’s not, so how’d she react to learning that Kim is one? (that’s probably answered in Soul Eater Not isn’t it) Does Harvar have even a single personality trait beyond being Ox’s nerd buddy who’s slightly more cynical than he is? These characters deserve better introductions than what they got (and answers for at least some of these questions)
Some other third thing
I did not realize how long this rant is. Oh well. Fun volume, can’t wait for the next.

Propaganda below!
Bayonetta
Every game has a theme song that relates to the moon (Fly Me to the Moon, Moon River, Moonlight Serenade), which plays during the opening cutscene where Bayonetta dons her umbran uniform. Furthermore, her clan, the Umbra Witches, are the counterparts to the Lumen Sages, who's symbol is the sun.
Crona Gorgon
No propaganda provided.
Mod created propaganda/explanation, as none of the submitters left any:
Major spoilers for the manga version of soul eater. At the end of the manga, Crona ends up sealing themself on the moon with their blood in order to contain the Kishin (whose the main villain.) Also, canon non-binary character, though most versions don’t reflect it because it’s an old series.

Do you think fans who don’t like the fire force retcon should just remove it from their personal interpretation of Soul eater? It’s what I choose to do
Yes, I think fans can just ignore it.
I don't mean, "That never happened and I am ignoring the final chapter of Fire Force," because, no, you can't ignore what is printed on the page (and likely will be adapted into the anime) and just interpret it differently. That is not what interpretation is: you have to actually look at the page and see what is there, not pretend it didn't happen.
Rather, I mean that there are enough of us who have our own headcanon, our own AUs, our own stories, and it is fine to prefer that story to what ended up printed. And this wouldn't be the first time (people who ignore the last episode of the first Soul Eater anime, people who ignore NOT, people who ignore Crona stuck on the Moon in the last chapter and the stupid fanservice madness).
Honestly, this almost shows a generational split. If you started with Soul Eater back when it was being published, it's probably easier to ignore Fire Force because you were invested in the story as it was happening, along with the theories and fanfics coming out at the same time. Back then, there was not much information about the world before Maka and company, so fanfics could fill in the gaps and do worldbuilding. And whether because those fanworks were just that good and even better than the manga, or because it was by fans so some of us get more defensive protecting them as better when really we're just nostalgic for them, it is probably easier for those first generation fans to ignore Fire Force.
But I wonder what it is like for people now just getting into Soul Eater after they finished Fire Force, or started Soul Eater when Fire Force first started, or are going to pick up Soul Eater after the Fire Force anime eventually does the prequel reveal. Do they, or will they, hate the prequel setup and ignore it, or are they better adjusted than I am and can say, "Oh, okay, now I know what the world was like before Soul Eater, this fits," because they don't have any headcanon or fanworks to compare it to?
(Personally, since I was reading Fire Force as it was being published and didn't read into anything as foreshadowing or prequel setup, I just treated the two as separate works / separate universes, or just imagined fanworks where there are crossovers. That all is kind of lost [outside of corporate artwork and mobile game events] when Shinra and company are likely all dead by the time Maka is having her own adventures--and I don't need time travel as a plot device to make this more confusing.)

Interesting discussion that Faun and I had last night, spurred by us watching Soul Eater—
We started thinking about how, while all abusive parents in media have rancid vibes, there’s something about an abusive biological mom that seems scarier, and we wanted to figure out why that was. Now obviously the whole somewhat sexist angle of “women are supposed to be Naturally Maternal” can’t be discounted here, but I realized there was also another side to it.
Pregnancy is REALLY PAINFUL. The biggest reason I don’t want kids is because I’m frankly scared of what it would feel like.
So while, say, Endeavor’s little eugenics experiment in BNHA involved a lot of abuse and trauma for all four of his children and his wife, Medusa in Soul Eater put herself through an intensely painful experience for 9+ months solely so she could experiment on and abuse the resulting child.
Bottom line, I think she creeps me out more because of all the extra physical effort she would have gone through in carrying a child just to make their life a living hell, and also I am tucking a fluffy blanket around Crona and making them soup and hot chocolate.

I never finished Soul Eater or Fire Force bc of the fanservice. But that one panel of Crona……. Are they doin okay?????
oh good god crona is NOT okay
one of the worst deviations in the manga is crona's arc.
tl;dr they run away from DWMA, medusa fucks them up further until she's finally happy with the result and gaslights crona into killing her, they massacre a whole village so shinigami puts them on the hit list, and then in the finale crona tells maka they've committed too many atrocities to come back so they fuse with the kishin to keep him trapped on the moon forever.
but we're left with this potential sequel bait so there's that..?
Tumblr media
oh and also in the final chapter its revealed that since the kishin basically emits madness radiation from the moon onto the earth and crona has mommy issues this translates into their fused form radiating madness that makes you think of boobs i am not joking i am not making this up

One of my favorite parts about Soul Eater is the developing trust of meister’s letting their weapons be in human-form while fighting. For instance:
Tsubaki mirroring Blackstar and contributing even more of herself to the fight against Mifune.
Tumblr media
Or with Soul manually harnessing his Death Scythe abilities to defend Maka when she’s incapable of fighting.
Tumblr media
But I think my favorite detail is how Kid, Patty, and Liz have already had this trust since the beginning. It caught my when Kid ordered Patty himself while chasing the Demon Train for her to wield Liz. Of course, its established with Kid’s introduction that he and his sisters are already ahead of all the DWMA students because he’s a Grim Reaper, but that overlooks the personal connection that they have.
Tumblr media
Kid has great trust for the Thompson’s and values their past in Brooklyn as important pieces to who they are, and he accepts it all.
Tumblr media
He understands the importance of family connections because his relationship with his father is the only one he has. So seeing these two sisters who freely wield each other, why would he ever want to take that away? The whole reason he’s making his own weapons is because he needs to be perfect for his dad; human relationships like Liz and Patty are perfect in their own imperfections, which is what drives Kid to find them. That perfection in a world that he will rule is so important to him. So it’s really sweet how he made a spot for himself with Liz and Patty while also still letting them shine together like old times,
Tumblr media
which is all reaffirmed by Liz herself during her flashback. She talks about her love for Patty and never wanting to leave each others side, but somehow, Kid made his own place in their hearts. Even with trying to take advantage of him, he still paved a way. They were all finally at peace together. So much that the sister’s wielding each other is a part of their routine.
Tumblr media
I also think this interaction is crucial to understanding the soul resonance between these three. Patty’s immediate reaction to Kid losing his arm was to help him in her human form. Not even being worried about an enemy, all she needed was to be by Kid’s side.
What matters is that she can still wield Liz herself for a brief moment to make sure Kid is okay
