I can't write for the life of me, but I've just thought of a tasty soulmate-fic premise (romantic or platonic!):

When their eyes are closed, a soulmate can see what their other half sees.

Whether it's super clear, or just impressions, or perhaps the more one stares at something the clearer it gets, just imagine the potential.

Soulmates taking turns to close their eyes and communicate through notes to find eachother. Soulmates who know when the other's fallen asleep because it's completely dark on the other side. Soulmates who can't sleep because their other half is somewhere way too bright and have to write passive-aggressive notes asking if they could "please turn the lights down!" Soulmates who are bored and would rather watch the others everyday life, no matter how mundane. Soulmates who's friends and/or family make fun of them for zoning out to watch through their other halves eyes instead of paying attention.

And then, on the other hand? The angst potential is delicious-

Soulmates who are so desperate to stop their other half from knowing that they wear a blindfold, or straight up blind themselves, to prevent it. Soulmates who hate the thought of someone intruding on their private lives, whether they're meant to be together or not. Soulmates who have terrible home/work lives and hope against hope that their other half doesn't find out or worse. Soulmates who are abused or get into fights often, trying their damnedest to protect their eyes above all else. Soulmates who's eyes are damaged, accidentally or otherwise, terrified of the thought that their other half won't ever be able to find them.

There are so so many ways you can swing this:

One soulmate afraid that their other half had died, having never been able to see through their eyes. Their soulmate was born blind, and managed to see things they thought they never could/would thanks to their soulmate.

Soulmates that met during childhood, living their lives as a whole, using their connection for simple, silly, domestic reasons.

Familial soulmates! Twins who aren't quite psychic but know what the other is doing all of the time. Siblings who are stuck with eachother and pretend to hate it, but are secretly glad they'll always have the other. Found family where it feels like they've always had the other and are impossible to separate.

Long-distance soulmates, teaching eachother about where they were born/grew up, showing eachother things precious to eachother.

Daytime Vs Nighttime soulmates who are barely ever awake at the same time, treasuring those in-between moments.

Soulmates with nightmares, one waking up in a panic, blinking hard and trying to calm down as quickly as possible. The other getting glimpses of the aftermath as they blink, perhaps rushing to their side if they can, comforting their distressed soulmate.

College/University AU soulmates knowing too much about their other halves area of study. Writing eachother notes to go to bed or to eat when they both forget and stay up studying way too late.

Assassin/Spy AU soulmates, using their bond to complete their missions as effectively as possible. Or perhaps the assassin/spy's soulmate is their target. Especially tasty if you throw in undercover work.

I know this one is super duper popular & there are a lot of these prompts that I love so much, so I wanted to give it a try! Hopefully it comes off as unique enough? A person has a special watercolor tattoo on their arm that resembles a flower. The flowers start as buds & grow as time goes on, but there can be a pair with the same flower as others! Because once you meet your soulmate, the flowers bloom into your soulmates favorite flower!

Everyone is gifted a special animal companion when they become of age, who will lead you to your soulmate when the time comes. To make it easier, each person is given a special charm with their partner’s animal friend on it. Think of it like a spirit animal!

Each person is born with a constellation on their body & their soulmate has the same one. The stars in the constellation glow when you’ve met them.

Similar to the “first words prompt” except the words look a bit scribbly & are hard to read. When soulmates meet, their words straighten out & turn a pretty gold color.

A tattoo of the place you’ll meet your soulmate: when you two meet the tattoo disappears. However, there aren’t any words or texts that say what or where the place is. Sometimes it can even be someplace simple, like a park or a library!

Different animals or insects can symbolize love: every person has a tattoo of one of these specific creatures. Who will appear right before meeting your soulmate. Once you meet them, the mark disappears.

A person is born with a special mark on their body, in the shape of a heart, which changes color depending on their soulmates mood! The heart becomes white once soulmates meet!

Idea I've been thinking of for a bit now, which I like to call "Hanahaki Without the Death".

When you first start to develop feelings for your soulmate, you start giving off flower petals when you're near them.

It's not entirely clear where they come from, simply falling from your fingertips, or leaving a trail as your walk, or seeming to fall off of you like water droplets. Waking from a dream about them with petals on your pillow, someone hiding from a crush causing a pile of flowers to form.

At first, they're mere petals, but as your feelings intensify buds start to fall, then full flowers, only stopping once you confess your feelings.

There's nothing wrong with this happening, it won't kill you, but it sure is hard to hide your crush on someone when you look like a flower girl around them, right?

Though, there have been stories of people locking themselves away to hide their secret, and the ever-growing flowers began to take root and chain them down...

So Dark Soulmates AUs just crossed my dash and my brain went immediately into WinterBaron overdrive with a couple of these...

Particularly a combo of:

Soulmates are supposed to live and die together. That means as soon as soulmates lay eyes on each other, their souls get entwined, so that if one dies the other does too. It has become quite common to hire people that specialize in finding and killing soulmates, so that they never randomly meet them and risk dying through them.

Starting at age 18, people will stop aging until they find their soulmate to grow old with. Many people don't want to give up possible immortality and hire hitmen to get rid of their soulmates.

Soulmates feel each other's pain and criminals use this to torture two people at once.

Which in my mind has become (more under the cut this got long)

HYDRA trying to hunt down who Bucky's soulmate is at first to prevent him from aging and having his soul entwined so that they can keep their asset, but after decades they just assume Bucky's soulmate is already dead, since it doesn't seem like he's reacting to any kind of unexplainable pain at all early on. It isn't until Zemo's in the military that he actually winds up hurt enough to cause any pain to HYDRA's asset, but because he's in cryo so often the sensation of pain isn't registered, and it's not like the wounds leave any marks. Instead, the first time an unexplainable pain is registered through the Asset is during the fall of Sokovia - Zemo's leg gets pinned, and the Asset (Bucky, slowly reclaiming his identity) finds himself stumbling. Having assumed, himself, at this point that if he had a soulmate they must be long dead, Bucky is perplexed by this sudden occurrence, and finds himself chatted up by a kindly old lady who remarks that she hopes his soulmate didn't hurt too much. ("Oh, stubbed their toe did they? It always catches you off-guard!" she speaks from her own experiences, not realizing that a stubbed toe wouldn't be nearly the kind of pain that would typically make him stumble that way. Zemo, of course, hasn't been oblivious. Neither he nor Heike began to age when they met, he didn't feel Heike's pain when she went into labour, he hadn't felt any of her pain, and while they were genuinely in love, it was clear that they weren't one anothers' soulmates. Nevertheless, she was the person he had chosen and the loss of both her and their son still sets him off on his plan to deal with the Avengers. The time in which Zemo and Bucky see each other isn't what makes things clear - it isn't as though anyone notices their bodies beginning to age so quickly. In fact, it's when the fight Zemo initiates between Tony and Steve and Bucky begins that it clicks for Zemo, but he's in too much shock from the revelation to really process it. It's outside, in the snow, that reality really starts to crawl in; he took his revenge for the sake of his wife and child, and in so doing he manipulated and fucked up the life of his soulmate. (Cue additional reasons for T'Challa's interference.) Being in prison, isolated as Zemo was, the only one who feels any real pain from anything is Zemo, but there's no real way to be oblivious to the fact that Bucky is finally aging, even though he has no answers for the people who ask about who his soulmate is. The blip is a strange anomaly for everyone; some peoples' soulmates are blipped, and yet it doesn't kill the remaining soulmate, leaving many people actually quite hopeful about people coming back. Zemo, however, has no way of knowing that Bucky was among those blipped. Things proceed as usual, Zemo doesn't make any comments on anything, and it isn't until, in a NZPU and Zemo is kidnapped that Bucky really catches on. Zemo's been tortured before, sure, but this is the first time Bucky's been active during that, and so the moment Bucky and Sam manage to recover Zemo, and Bucky sees the obvious injuries, Bucky finally realizes.

Anyway, as usual, that's the jist of what I've got. Just spewing some thoughts. You know. Enjoy them. Or don't. Adopt them. Or don't. Whatever pleases you.

TBH I'm too hot to function or make the rest of my brain work enough to make this make more sense I just have rambling thoughts...

Unfortunately, I'm not a big fan of soulmate AUs so I have little to no idea about the tropes floating around.

But one of my friends wrote a soulmate AU featuring a Soulmate goose. Aka, a goose follows the person around and chases them towards their soulmate. It was a hilarious read and I haven't seen it anywhere else yet.

Other than that, I don't think I've seen Being able to see through their soulmate's eyes trope around. It would be similar to being able to hear the other's thoughts, just with sight. Could be interesting if one of the pair/group is blind or has some other vision impairment.

Balancing each other's skills could also work in an interesting way. Aka when one of the soulmates is great at cooking, the other absolutely sucks at it. (I can see this being made into a crime/horror story tbh)

Also can't forget the hell's spawn soulmate AU of The last words, where the last words of one's soulmate are on the other's body. That one hurts.

You remembered one of the first times those flowers grew on you. It was just on your finger, and you asked your parents what it was. They told you about the soulmate legend, and you thought it was so cool! Then they just kept growing. When the wound healed the flowers would die and wither.

Then one day they grew again, but they grew over one of your eyes and across your back. You screamed, panicking and wondering what was going on. Your family tried to calm you down, but you couldn't be calmed.

You were freaking out because what the hell happened to your soulmate? After that day, the flowers over your eye never died, so you were blinded in that eye but the ones that spread across your back went away after a while.

Over the years, you got used to the flowers over your eye. They were annoying, but you were able to deal with it, luckily and you always keep an eye out for anyone that had one damaged eye but you've never met anyone like that. It was strange; it sort of felt like they just... weren't there.

Then you met him.

He appeared out of a swirling portal one day, two others coming out with him. You could, honestly, not care less about the other two the leader was the one that caught your attention. He was covered in this... goop? It had the same color as the sky when the sun was setting but darker, and tentacles that were whipping around on his back. Over his eye was more of that goop, the same eye that was covered in flowers for you.

This was your soulmate?

The other two jump down from where they had been, the goopy one starting to talk, "Greetings everyone. I am Daydream, and I am here to make everyone happy. It is very nice to meet you all1" He laughs, holding up his arms, "I can tell many of you are afraid, but fear not, we are the good guys! Protecting you all from my terrible brother and his goons." the one with the large brush swipes it up and black ink spread out changing shapes. Horses all running together, sea animals swimming. It was beautiful.

The blue one starts to run around, greeting everyone in a happy tone. Even though they were all being so nice... you had a strange feeling in your gut. This didn't feel... safe.

Then your eyes met with Daydream's, and he blinks then smiles and moves down. He was coming right towards you...

Your soulmate feels a lot. Whoever they are, they have experienced the full spectrum at a billion miles an hour. Grief, sorrow, joy, fear, triumph, love, loss, they've felt it all. And you've felt it all, since the day you were born you've felt these complex emotions that aged you, in mind and spirit. It scared your parents, who weren't sure how to handle all these complex emotions pouring from your five year old mouth.

Therapy helped a bit, family therapy until you were 18 so your parents could learn how to manage your fits of rage or hyperactivity. You've been going on and off since then for a while. Sometimes there were long spurts of time where you felt nothing, like they were so far away from you couldn't connect. Other times their grief drowned you, suffocated out everything in your life until you were clawing your way out of their emotions and trying to help them.

It wasn't until recently, when you were out with friends for drinks that you felt a new emotion from them.

Lust.

You've felt desire before, the little tingle that starts at the base of your skull and travels all the way down between your legs. But it was never more than that. Your soulmate seemed to control that part of themselves very well.

But right now you burned. Your body ached with a need that felt otherworldly. Every breath you drew in was ragged. You clutched your bottle of beer in your fist.

"You okay, babes?" Your friend asked, their head tilting to the side to look at you.

"I-" you swallowed the drool threatening to dribble out of your mouth. "I think I need some fresh air."

"Do you want one of us to come with?"

"No," you rushed. "No, can you watch my stuff?"

You didn't wait for them to respond. Sweat dripped down your spine as you wove through the crowd to the smokers area. Fresh air was relative, all that mattered was the cool night breeze hitting your over heated skin. You took a long swig of your beer. Just as the lust thundering through your veins cooled, a new sense of panic replaced it. You leaned against the brick wall, begging your soulmate to calm the fuck down for one night. You just wanted one night.

"There you are," A voice called out, deep and rumbling. "You move very fast for a mortal."

Through the cigarette haze and dim lights, a golden haired man stepped up to you. A god. The God. Thor.

"Holy shit."

"I can feel how shocked you are, but-ha a pun." He grinned as though he had never felt that soul destroying things you fought off as a child. Like he had only felt this warm you were feeling now. "I can assure you, I have felt everything for as long as you have lived. When I came to earth, our bond grew too much to ignore. I had to find you."

"Oh my therapist is going to love you."

Multiple Soulmates Prompts

The Netflix show Sense8 is basically like this: 8 people from around the world that are telepathically connected, sharing each other's emotions, languages and skills and are even able to take over the other's body - and they are definitely soulmates in their own way.

Other prompts:

Everyone had their soulmate's name on their body when they rach a certain age - with exceptions. But it was a taboo to talk about the ones without a name and it was downright sacrilegious to talk about the few with more than one name.

They are able to see their soulmates' dreams, but it's getting complicated when they are not sure which soulmate's dream this was.

Hearing your soulmate's voice in your head can be calming and even helpful. Multiple soulmates having discussions or inappropiate banter in your head is not helpful at all.

You were supposed to feel whole when you've met your soulmate. But both realize quickly that there is still someone missing.

Having a bunch of soulmates was normal. There were platonic soulmates and romantic soulmates.

They found each other very early in life, but they always knew that there was one more soulmate of theirs out there. But it takes a while to find them.

It was a shock to find out that they were not their soulmate's soulmate. And even more shocking to find out that they were their soulmate's soulmate's soulmate... One complicated triangle-shaped mess with one easy solution.

Their soul mark was an intricate design and they're crushed when they find someone they have a connection with, but their marks are only almost right. Then a third person shows up whose soul mark's design seems to be the missing piece that connects them all.

Soulmate AU Headcanons: The Red String of Fate.

The Red String of Fate: a magical red string tied to the right pinkies of two soulmates. It is only visible to the two soulmates and only becomes visible to them once they both become of age at 18.

While the string is visibly connected from the hands, the string is truly connected from deep within the roots of the hearts, the souls of two people, bonding them as soulmates.

This is why it is so strongly affected by the heart.

While it is always visible to the soulmates, when in close proximity, the string is also visible to those around.

The more two soulmates love one another, the more it becomes visible to those around them.

When the soulmates both feel ready to join hands in marriage, the string will have a bow tied in between them to tell them.

If two soulmates were to have strong conflict between them, the string would start to tangle until it is resolved.

However, when one of the soulmates is in a critical state, the string will begin to pull at the other, an urgent call. 

The way the string pulls at the other works much like a heart-meter, tugging firmly at every pulse.

…So if they were to flatline, the other will notice the string is no longer tugging in a rhythmic pattern, rather, it pulls at them tightly and never loosens… until the string falls limp and turns black, severed at the end.

Because of such an urgent matter, even if one of the partners hasn’t come of age, it will still appear for them.

The string will also appear to everyone else.

This is why doctors have given the same priorities to soulmates as they do to family.

As skeptical as medical workers are of the magical properties of the string of fate, upon seeing the statistics and evidence of the survival/health rates of critical patients, they hypothesize that the presence of the other’s soulmate drastically increases serotonin levels and whatever helps people live. However, it is speculated that the bond of the soulmates is what heals the other’s soul through the power of love, urging them to keep on fighting to live.

However, this realization has also increased the rates of suicide attempts and death rates, in attempt to bring their soulmate to them before they both become of age.

This is why this information is omitted when educating people about soulmates.

In relation, because of its magical properties, the string cannot be broken through normal means. It can only be broken either through death or a specific type of scissors, which was originally made when a string becomes too tangled to be repaired and is only damaging them.

However, once the string is broken, it will also break the souls of the bonded partners. As a result, they lose their ability to feel emotions, as it is not possible to do so without a soul.

Your words read, “I can’t believe [celebrity] died,” so you follow that celebrity’s life closely, waiting for the day they die. (Bonus points if you have something to do with the death.)

You expect your words to spoken to you in person, but they actually come in the form of a text message from a wrong number.
