boardwalk empire fanfic recs pls
Oh man, there are seriously so many talented writers in this fandom considering how small it is. I go back and read these over and over again. Most are soulmates (Charlie/Meyer) centric, but I can recommend a few that aren’t.
First, I’m going to take a minute to peddle my own wares because I write fic, too.
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by @portiaadams is far and away my favorite fic in the fandom (and I’m not just saying that because I consult on it). Her OC, Clara Thompson (Nucky’s daughter) is nuanced, dynamic and flawed and the historical details are so well researched sometimes I forget it’s not actually canon. The main pairing is Richard Harrow/OC but there are a lot of fantastic Charlie/Meyer moments in the sequel, Hand in Hand to Hell.
@fancykraken writes really emotionally charged (devastating) Charlie/Meyer one shots. My favorites are The Right Time for Kissing and Sweet Mistake.
Then there are the OGs, the ones us newcomers owe so much to. They set the bar so high, it’s honestly a really intimidating standard to meet.
I want to kill me a giant man Gen one shot that explores the dynamic between Meyer and Jimmy.
you’ll rise up easy on that day Another great gen fic that features an insight into what Jimmy’s working relationship with the New York boys might have looked like.
And Only Us by @goatsandgangsters. Do you want season five angst with a dash of caretaking and two rotten people saying I love you without actually saying I love you? Read this.
our fears had no teeth Old men cuddling in Cuba. A sequel to hope from every small disaster, based on the actual account of when Charlie first arrived in Cuba after his prison sentence.
beg dead trees for money next by @meyerlansky. Oh the pining. Oh the emotions around Charlie’s release from Hampton Farms. Oh my heart.
when Rome’s in ruins This was the version of The Ride we deserved between seasons 4 and 5. This is canon as far as I’m concerned.
for those who are about to die I’m a sucker for an afterlife au.
the Dawning of the World might be my favorite Charlie/Meyer fic ever. The dialogue is spot on and it does such an incredible job capturing Charlie and Meyer’s relationship throughout their lives together.
Search out the rest of the Boardwalk fics by any of the authors mentioned above for yourself, too. They will blow you away, for real. I also recommend reading anything by RuBecSo and therestisdetail.
That should all be enough to get you started!

house and wilson are both committing malpractice but in like. opposite ways. house is so detached from his patients that it sometimes actively harms his diagnostic process and almost always causes unnecessary distress/harm to his patients but wilson is so. so disgustingly disturbingly attached to every single person he treats. he sleeps with patients he gives his liver to a guy who doesn’t even know his name his office is a literal monument to the items he’s collected from everyone he couldn’t save. they’re both incapable of maintaining or respecting personal boundaries but it manifests in vastly different ways.

One of my favourite examples when talking about how well Wilson and House know each other, is the episode where Wilson becomes convinced that House has a gun. The fact that Wilson even knows House has a gun in the first place shows how much they know each other. But in the episode, they both trick each other and Wilson breaks into House's apartment and House tries to stop Wilson, but eventually Wilson outsmarts him and ends up going through House's apartment and everything he owns, all while House is insistent that he does not own a gun.
And then, at the end, Wilson pulls up to House's office, brandishing the gun, going, "Ah ha! I knew it." And House rolls his eyes and tells Wilson it's fake and Wilson doesn't believe him, and House eventually hands him back the gun and tells him to shoot him. So Wilson is standing there holding a gun with House encouraging and trying to goad him into shooting him to prove that it's fake. Eventually, Wilson gives up and gives House back the gun and concedes. And then, at the end, it's revealed that the gun was real, and House's bluff was to try to get Wilson to shoot him with a loaded gun as a way to earn his trust.
This is such a good example because I feel like it wouldn't have worked the way it did with anyone else. House was betting his life on how well he knows Wilson, he was so sure that Wilson wouldn't risk shooting him even with a fake gun, that he handed him a loaded weapon and tried to convince Wilson to shoot him. He only did that because he knew Wilson wouldn't. Wilson, on the other hand, knows House well enough to know that he definitely had a gun, and there was always a chance that it was real even if House said it wasn't. He took the gun with that knowledge and refused to do what House was encouraging him to do. He knew House well enough to know that House knew him well enough that there's a chance he'd pull a bluff like this. And so Wilson didn't risk it. They know each other so well that House can hand a loaded gun to Wilson, convince him it's fake, tell Wilson to shoot him, and then be secure in the knowledge that he's not in danger because Wilson wouldnt do it.
I feel like 90% of the characters would've just shot him because they fell for it and wouldn't have believed House would pull something like that. And I don't think House would've pulled that with anyone but Wilson.

endless list of otps: (remake) Callum and Rayla, The Dragon Prince
To have that kind of strength, it's not enough to love someone. You have to trust them to share the burdens you carry. [...] Callum, there's a... burden I'm carrying, and I've kept it a secret. And maybe that's part of what's made things weirder with us. But I think—I know that I trust you to help me carry this. If you're okay with that? Rayla. We've been through a lot together. And a lot has changed. Well, some things have changed—but not everything: I would do anything for you.

Trying to psych myself up by rereading the last thing I wrote for Sad Old Men™️ in the hopes that it might inspire me to you know, finish it.
He and Anna had married in May, and Charlie had been found the day after Yom Kippur staggering around on a beach in Staten Island with his face and throat cut open.
The worst day of his life, he would tell some reporter years from now.
“Why do you think?”
Charlie smiles at that. He must be thinking the same thing—of course he is. Meyer can’t remember a time he and Charlie didn’t arrive at the same conclusion at almost the same instant.
“You did what you had to. I know that now. It’s just,” He shrugs. “Nothin’ feels like mine no more.”
Meyer’s played his part in that, but he doesn’t know how to make up for it or if he even could at this point. They've had all the arguments they’re going to have about Anna, Teddy too. But that’s not what this is. Now Charlie just looks tired, resigned. There’s nothing left to fight about. They can’t go back.
“Are you still talking about us?” Meyer tests the waters. His fingers brush, then snag, on the sleeve of Charlie’s robe. Charlie allows it. It’s a good sign.
“I don’t know. Yeah, I guess.”
He waited eleven agonizing days, but once Charlie was discharged Meyer more or less took up residence in his suite at the Plaza. They had work to do. Charlie had been understandably paranoid and refused to see anyone—only granting an audience to a handful of trusted point men, Benny, and Frank. Months, years of careful strategizing would finally be set in motion, but it was important that they kept up appearances, that they held the line. Charlie couldn’t afford to show weakness, no matter how gruesome his injuries. If anything, it was useful. Whether he liked it or not, Charlie had become a thing of legend, a mythical effigy woven into the tapestry of American folklore. He’d finally earned the moniker.
Lucky Luciano.
