Mark Harmon is paying tribute to his longtime NCIS co-star David McCallum, who died Monday at age 90.
“David lived a great, full, long life,” Harmon shared in a statement to TVLine. “I was in awe when I first met him and all of us on the show were honored to have toed a mark opposite him. My condolences go out to Katherine and his family.” (Read more tributes from McCallum’s NCIS co-stars past and present here.) As we reported, McCallum — who most recently appeared, remotely, in the final two episodes of NCIS‘ 20th season last spring — passed away at New York Presbyterian Hospital of natural causes. With Harmon’s exit from NCIS in Season 19, McCallum was the CBS procedural’s last original cast member.
“For over 20 years, David McCallum endeared himself to audiences around the world playing the wise, quirky, and sometimes enigmatic, Dr. Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard,” said NCIS‘ current exec producers, Seven D. Binder and David North, in a statement. “But as much as his fans may have loved him, those who worked side by side with David loved him that much more. He was a scholar and a gentleman, always gracious, a consummate professional, and never one to pass up a joke. From day one, it was an honor to work with him and he never let us down. He was, quite simply, a legend. He was also family and will be deeply missed.”
Added a CBS spokesperson: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of David McCallum and privileged that CBS was his home for so many years. David was a gifted actor and author, and beloved by many around the world. He led an incredible life, and his legacy will forever live on through his family and the countless hours on film and television that will never go away.  We will miss his warmth and endearing sense of humor that lit up any room or soundstage he stepped onto, as well as the brilliant stories he often shared from a life well-lived.”

December, 2022. At Kumeū Film Studios, just outside Auckland, an amusingly contrasting combination of high and low-tech filmmaking methods are being employed on the set of pirate series Our Flag Means Death.
Inside a massive soundstage, atop the gargantuan, full-scale pirate ship Revenge, Taika Waititi, as Ed “Blackbeard” Teach, performs a scene with co-star Con O’Neill, who plays Ed’s surly first mate Izzy.
Surrounding the ship is a giant “volume” wall comprised of 1700 LED monitors displaying a photorealistic ocean background with rolling waves. As a crane-mounted camera weaves around, the images on the digital display move with it, creating a seamlessly integrated backdrop. It’s about as cutting-edge as filmmaking gets these days (the Star Wars shows rely upon this technique), but just out of frame, a crouched stagehand is manually wiggling the ship’s sails to indicate the wind. The human touch still has a role to play amid all the expensive technology. On the day the Herald has visited, it’s near the end of a long, exhausting shoot for the second season of Our Flag Means Death. But you wouldn’t know it from the upbeat vibes on set, which bustles with craftspeople and technicians. At one point, Waititi leads everyone (including visitors) through a quick set of squats to keep the energy levels high.In addition to starring, Waititi is directing this particular episode, having been drafted in when the intended director was felled by Covid-19. The Kiwi Oscar-winner is famous for the loose, improvisational touch that shines through in all his work, and it’s fascinating to witness his process first-hand. Throughout the scene being performed, Waititi tries out endless versions of every single line. Even in the same take. O’Neill, clearly used to this method, waits patiently to deliver his dialogue as Waititi cycles through options within the scene. Some of his improvised bits are obviously just to get a laugh from the crew, while others seem to involve him working through the point of the scene in his head. Sometimes, the scene resolves on a light note. At others, it is dramatic. It keeps everyone one their toes.
But this show has been full of surprises from the get-go.
Based on the true story of Stede Bonnett (Rhys Darby), who abandoned British society and his family to embrace the pirate life in the early 18th century, the series initially presented as a gentile comedy with an impressively diverse cast. But throughout the first season, which was filmed in Los Angeles, it quietly became one of the queerest shows on television.
Although there was nary a mention of the possibility in the advance press, Stede and Ed ended up in a surprisingly tender - well, sometimes - romantic entanglement with each other throughout season one. There are other queer relationships, and one character, Jim (Vico Ortiz), was revealed to be non-binary.
Unlike some shows that feature LGBTQIA+ representation, Our Flag Means Death didn’t trumpet its progressive values - it simply let the characters and the story lead the way, and is all the richer for it. It has received much acclaim for these elements, garnering Glaad Media and Peabody Award nominations.
It’s also partly why Madeleine Sami was so excited to join the series in season two, playing a pirate named Archie.
“I think that’s the brilliance of this show,” Sami tells the Herald later that afternoon. “Because it is a funny, silly comedy, but then there’s some really important stuff happening underneath. The progressive stuff is incidental in a way that makes it feel more revolutionary. Just being able to see queer characters as lead characters in comedies is a cool thing.”
Sami originally met with creator David Jenkins about directing an episode, but it was eventually decided to stick with season one’s roster. Then the opportunity to audition for Archie came up.
“Archie’s a very happy-go-lucky pirate,” says Sami. “She has a bit of a mysterious backstory, which you get little tastes of, but she’s pretty chill. She likes to party, she likes to pirate.”
All acting can be tied back to childhood play on some level, playing a pirate especially so.
“Honestly, I pinch myself so many times on this job,” says Sami. “It’s the role you dream about when you’re a kid, to get to play a pirate.”
Sami says it’s the biggest production she’s ever worked on in New Zealand, but the expensive trappings don’t impact the process.
“It’s a workplace comedy about pirates. So it never feels like that stuff overwhelms it.”
She’s also relishing the chance to muck around with her old mates Waititi and Darby.
“I’ve known those guys for a really long time, and I think they’re both doing really incredible work on this show. This group of actors are just bloody idiots, and so lovely and playful.”
Another Kiwi comedy staple, David Fane, has been part of the show since season one as Fang, a member of Blackbeard’s crew.
“It was just fantastical,” he tells the Herald of originally getting the role. “The best part was meeting all these other people from all over the world and finding the comedy in all these different communities; people of colour and also the rainbow community. Just the best buzz. I felt like a kid in a candy shop.”
Seeing the show move to New Zealand for season two (thanks in part to the NZ Screen Production Rebate for International Productions) only enriched the experience.
“To be here, and to actually do it back home, was just the biggest buzz,” enthuses Fane. ”To have people like Samba [Schutte] and Joel [Fry] and all the others come to see this part of the world and do some work here. The overseas cast are in love with Whittaker’s chocolate, as all good people should be.”
Fane, who also appears in Waititi’s upcoming comedy movie Next Goal Wins, reckons the second season is next-level.
“In the first season, everyone was finding their feet. And in the second season, people are walking assuredly. It just gets betterer - story-wise, and also honesty-wise and fun-wise.”

Since I know you're writing some (great) stuff, let's do a 8, 17 and 19 for the writing asks :D
Thanks for the ask!! :)
8. What project(s) are you currently working on?
I have 3 gelphie fics I'm working on right now. The first is a coffeeshop au, the next is an old hollywood au, and the last is one that doesn't really have a name yet but originally it was based on the Briarwoods from critical role. It's changed a lot since I started it but that explains the vibe pretty well still.
17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?
Okay so this isn't technically *for* the fic (anymore) but it was something I researched while considering what time period I wanted the fic set in because originally the 1910s/20s was an option. But anyway the silent film era had a lot of female directors which was really cool. Alice Guy was one of the first directors and one of the first to make narrative films. Most of the earliest silent movies are kind of strange, but I did find a cute one about dogs. https://youtu.be/0QMLcJgSOWM
19. Give us a small teaser from one of your WIPs.
Here's something from the first chapter of the hollywood au.
It looked like some of the crew were still busy, running around the soundstage to finish their work before the director got back, but many of them were staring at her and Fiyero. Of course they were. Glinda couldn’t blame them. The biggest star of the past decade and Hollywood’s newest heartthrob, both with rumors and near-career-destroying scandals hanging over their heads. People were talking, but for once she couldn’t say she was enjoying it. She snuggled into Fiyero’s side, taking his hand in hers and kissing his cheek. There, that would give everyone something to talk about.
(Don't worry, it gets to gelphie eventually lol)

Erra comes to The Masquerade to Pull From the Ghost
Over the weekend, ConcertHopper was in attendance for the Pull From the Ghost Tour stop at The Masquerade in Atlanta. This tour featured Erra, Alpha Wolf and Invent Animate. Later stops of the tour will also include Thornhill who is finishing up a tour in Australia at the moment. In spite of the earlier threats of storms, the fans piled into the venue in droves for the show. As the lights prepared to go down for the show to start, if you took time to scan the venue, you’d see excited people packed from the floor to the top of the balcony.
First to take the stage was Invent Animate hailing from Texas. The hybrid prog and metalcore band formed in 2011 and then self-released their debut EP in 2012. After some localized touring, the band released their first full-length album Everchanger in 2014. The band tackles some complex subject matter and flashes technical prowess, filling the room in a way that few four-piece groups can.
Next up was one of Australia’s metalcore titans, Alpha Wolf. The band, not without facing some of the pitfalls we see too frequently in the metal community, parted ways with vocalist Aidan Ellaz (also of Dealer) was accused of sexual assault. Despite this, they found a charismatic front man in Lochie Keogh. The band has been of force of nature after the shackles on touring were loosened. They’ve made multiple trips across the oceans to the US and will even be playing the Blue Ridge Rock Festival in Virginia this upcoming September. The musical stylings of Alpha Wolf (fast, brutal and in your face) are matched by their on-stage performance. The band leaves it all in the spotlights on the stage for their fans, even talking about how they are exhausted until they step on the stage and the energy of the fans recharges them and they forget their exhaustion. The rest of this tour and Blue Ridge are in for a special treat from these fellows.
Finally, it was time for the headliners, Erra. The band, who hail from Birmingham, Alabama, have always been something of local darlings in the Atlanta metal area. Having toured with some of metalcore’s biggest acts like August Burns Red, TesseracT and Born of Osiris to name a few. The group carved a path of their own and created what others have described as an act that is the “spearhead of the whole modern/progressive metalcore movement.” The band has made some power moves, featuring Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox on their single “Vanish Canvas”. All of this culminated in a powerful set that swept through their catalog of metalcore masterpieces. Like Alpha Wolf, Erra will also be making an appearance at this year’s Blue Ridge Rock Festival.

New Bryston BP-19 Preamp Now On Demo!
Tumblr media
Hi All,
We have always been big fans of Bryston at HiFi Lounge, they were one of our founding brands and I have personally owned Bryston at home for 15+ years now and I still love it, they walk that fine line really well giving clarity, honestly and insight into any recording but with just enough warmth to keep the presentation natural and I still think in this crazy world of HiFi they give great value for money and peace of mind with their legendary 20 year warranty on analogue products.
They are not a brand to keep releasing new products but when they do release something it is always worth a listen so when the BP-19 Pre was announced I ordered one straight away so I am really pleased to say that we now have it on permanent demo and it really doesn’t disappoint.
I always feel the importance of a preamp is overlooked, a good preamp should really help open up the soundstage, give depth and height to the music, they are certainly way more than just a input switcher with a volume control.
The BP-19 follows a long line of great Bryston Preamps, like the BP-26 and BP-17 amongst many others including the recent award winning BR-20 which was a streaming Preamp, a great sounding Pre to be honest but not everyone wanted the digital section in that so hence the BP-19, based on the BR-20 but just analogue so a great companion to the BR-20 meaning Bryston have 2 brilliant offering there and when partnered with one of their amps you really can’t go wrong.
We were running it for a demo at the weekend with the 4B3 stereo amp and PMC Fact.12 Signature speakers and it just sounded brilliant, a sound I am very familiar with as not a million miles from what I run at home.
Please find a link to Bryston on our website and if you’d like to come in for a demo at any point please feel free.
Cheers,
Paul.

Warner Bros. Demolish Movie History
Just a few blocks down the road from the Warner Bros. Studios lot in Burbank, sits a lesser-known movie ranch that has been home to many films and television productions from classic movies like “Christmas Vacation” to Marvel’s 2021 superhero series “WandaVision.” Last week, Warner Bros. began to demolish their movie ranch to make space for 16 new soundstages on the property.
Tumblr media
Hollywood is constantly in a state of change, with productions coming and going from studio lots, sets being built and taken down, and soundstages used and emptied. The film industry itself has been steadily shifting away from shooting on location with physical sets to using soundstages where productions have complete control over the environment. The demolition of such a legendary filming location doesn’t come as much of a shock today. Just a few years ago, Universal Studios demolished their historic “Phantom of The Opera” set and soundstage to make room for expansion of their theme park attractions.
Tonya Meyer, a former Warner Bros. Ranch employee, said, “We’ve known about plans to demolish the ranch since late 2019 and although it was sad news to hear, it didn’t come as a surprise to anyone who follows the industry closely.”
Tumblr media
The Warner Bros. Ranch will be completely demolished and redeveloped in a $500 million overhaul project that is already well underway. All of the physical sets and buildings on the 32-acre lot will be replaced with 16 state of the art soundstages, parking structures, office buildings, and animation studio. These will join Warner Bros. Studios already existing 32 soundstages located on their main lot.
Hollywood’s seemingly sudden need for soundstages is the result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the demand for new content from streaming services like Netflix and Max. In 2021, Universal built eight new soundstages on their backlot and just this year Fox Studios announced plans to construct nine additional soundstages on their lot in Century City.
Batisse Favreau, a tour guide at Warner Bros. main lot, said, “The ranch was special. It was like stepping into a movie time capsule. Hundreds, if not thousands, of pop-culture defining movies were filmed on the Warner Bros. Ranch.”
Stars from the 80s like Danny Glover and Mel Gibson used to call the ranch home while filming their “Lethal Weapon” movies. The same went for Chevy Chase and the National Lampoon production for their 1989 comedy “Christmas Vacation”. More recent productions include television shows like “The Middle” and “Young Sheldon,” which both used an extensive amount of the ranch for filming.
The demolition of the Warner Bros. Ranch marks a poignant moment in the ever-evolving landscape of Hollywood, but also as a reminder that change is the only constant in the entertainment industry. The decision to replace it with 16 modern soundstages among a growing demand for content from streaming platforms, highlights the film industry’s adaptability and push for more new content. Even though it’s sad to see the legendary movie ranch go, it’s a sign of Hollywood moving forward. The new soundstages will provide many productions with the space they need to bring new and exciting stories to life for everyone to enjoy.

Tower-ing Fiction #19: Etihad Towers, Furious 7 (2015); Ryland Towers, Black Moon Rising (1986)
by Shawn Gilmore
The Etihad Towers complex in Abu Dhabi, completed in 2011, is comprised of five main towers, with three mixed-use towers rising from a shared lower multi-story pavilion set against the beach to the south and two primarily residential towers set into a scalloped space north of the pavilion. The complex, designed by DBI Design, is clad mostly in reflective glass, though each tower presents at least one segmented façade pointing away from the center of the cluster. At the time of its completion, Tower 2 was the tallest in Abu Dhabi, though it has been surpassed by the Burj Mohammed bin Rashid (part of the World Trade Center Abu Dhabi) at some 381m (1,250’), ADNOC Headquarters (342m, 1,122’), and The Landmark (324m, 1,063’).
The Etihad Towers still boast impressive heights:
Tower 1: 69 stories, 277m (909’)
Tower 2: 74 stories, 305m (1,001’)
Tower 3: 54 stories, 260m (853’)
Tower 4: 61 stories, 234m (768’)
Tower 5: 55 stories, 218m (715’)
Memorably, the Etihad Towers served as the location for a major action set-piece in Furious 7 (dir. James Wan, 2015), during which Dom (Vin Diesel) and Brian (Paul Walker) escape Shaw (Jason Statham) by driving a red Lycan HyperSport from one tower to another (and another!) before abandoning the vehicle just before it crashes to the ground next to one of the Etihad Towers signs.
In the film, a series of establishing shots set up the variety of Abu Dhabi skyscrapers, circa 2015.
Dom and Brian’s team initially meets (bringing their many cars with them) at the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, an elaborate luxury hotel complex, which originally opened in 2005.
The team then relocates to reconnoiter the Tower complex from a parking area by the Marina Mall to the north, juxtaposing the architectural styles of the Etihad Towers and Emirates Palace, and echoing the many times members of Dom and Brian’s crew have surveyed downtown Los Angeles from the Dodger Stadium parking lot.
This helpfully orients viewers to the film’s geography, as the team not only ends up dozens of floors above street level, but also at the far western tip of the city, surrounded by water and few roads—not ideal for a Fast and Furious scenario.
Aerial shots of the Towers establish their upper profiles, as well as how the towers relate to each other spatially—Towers 4 and 5 to the north (left), 3 and 1 in the center, with the tallest, Tower 2 to the south (right)
Various interiors are also established—almost certainly soundstages—including an open-plan ballroom and private hallway, which will subdivide the action to come.
As in previous installments, Tej (Ludacris) helps orient viewers by pulling up schematics of the situation, this time joined by Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel).
Brian and Dom find the HyperSport tucked away in the collection of a Jordanian prince “in his penthouse” on an upper floor of what a character identifies as “Tower 1” (though in a moment, this will be Tower 2). Unable to find the device hidden in the car, they of course must drive it through the ballroom: “We’re taking the car!”
Confronted by Shaw, Dom and Brian launch the car through a window, some sixty or so stories up—the angle below indicates that they emerge from the north side of Tower 2—with one of Shaw’s grenades tilting the car as the careen toward Tower 3. (Most of these scenes, except those shot on soundstages, are CGI or heavily augmented.)
Fortuitously, the angles work out, and though Brian repeatedly yells “Cars don’t fly!” in the Fast and Furious franchise most certainly do, and in loving slow motion.
The HyperSport enters Tower 3 a few stories lower, crashing through a partially-finished floor, with Dom realizing the car’s brakes are not working.
One more jump, this time from Tower 3 to Tower 4, with an aerial shot showing the orientation of the pavilion below.
This floor of Tower 4 is occupied by an art exhibition of some sort, which Dom and Brian immediately demolish, crushing terracotta warriors and fine art as they go.
The HyperSport finally crashes out of the north façade of Tower 4, with Brian and Dom rolling to safety before it does so.
Finally, the car crashes back to street level—a much more conventional Fast and Furious elevation—just behind one of the Etihad Towers signs.
As a button on the scene, the team pulls up a satellite image of the Etihad Towers when trying to pinpoint Shaw’s last-known location.
Interestingly, the Etihad Towers jump in Furious 7 mirrors a perhaps lesser-known action scene from the film Black Moon Rising (dir. Harley Cokeliss, 1986), starring Tommy Lee Jones (Sam Quint) and Linda Hamilton (Nina). In it, Sam must steal an experimental car (the Black Moon), which has an important computer disk concealed inside, from an upper floor of a high rise, eventually needing to jump from one building to another.
The action centers on Ryland Towers (in reality the Molina Center at 300 Oceangate, in Long Beach, California, originally completed in 1983). As Sam and his compatriots plan how to steal the car, they work out various approaches, including how to get from one building to the other without crossing the exposed courtyard between them.
As in Furious 7, the Black Moon Rising location is in a relatively isolated corner of Long Beach, though various highways are more accessible than in Abu Dhabi.
The jump in Black Moon Rising, similar to that in Furious 7, is somewhat unplanned, as Sam had hoped to escape via a service corridor to a car elevator. However, this route is blocked, forcing Sam and Nina to ramp their way through the side of the building. Various establishing shots give a sense of scale and distance, with many discussions of the location’s dimensions.
On the night of the heist, Sam shimmies from one unsecured building to its fortified counterpart, winding his way through security to find the Black Moon and Nina.
The jump itself is much less elaborate, featuring a miniature of the Black Moon, but follows the same beats, with the car exiting one upper floor, arcing over the plaza below, only to crash into a mostly-empty floor in the adjacent building.

NCIS Season 19 promotional still Posted by Art Streiber on Instagram
@missbeane had a dream. She wanted to memorialize the cast of “NCIS,” the longest running drama currently on CBS (18 years) inside their iconic diner. But there were caveats… We’d have to shoot on production day. We’d be photographing the cast in smaller groups, as they were available. For one of the cast members we’d have to use existing artwork. We’d need to see as much of the diner as possible and pull in as much ambient as possible. And we’d need to shoot both a vertical and a horizontal. And we’d need to do another diner-exterior group. And we’d need to shoot singles of everyone on seamless. Who ya gonna call? The tireless, inventive, @jtergo to finesse the light. And it was a job that required the production coordination talents of the fearless @samanassefi. It was a job that required the organizational skills of @evanmulling. And the light building skills of @nd_lei, @dylan_catherina and intern @gasper_white. And the digital teching of @mariatroncosogibbs. And the photo gear of @screamingbroccoli. There is no OMG in “team” but there should be. Scout the diner. Find the shot. Find the ambient. Add three beauty dishes outside the diner to add to the ambient. Add a large Photek umbrella outside the diner to light up the talent in the second booth and then add a small Photek or a small, gridded @chimeralighting soft box to individual talent as needed. Add a fill card as needed as well. Set the Canon R5 for the horizontal and squeeze in the Hasselblad H5 for the vertical. Use stand-ins to figure out where talent will sit, lean or stand. Give the talent eyelines in order to tell the story of the coming season. Get the talent to perform the same look for both the horizontal and the vertical. Be ready to jump into or out of the diner at a moment’s notice as talent availability will change as the production schedule evolves. And…make sure that you are fulfilling the vision of @missbeane and the design requirements of @danishkids and @hello__its__bre! Many, many thanks to everyone at NCIS. We had almost every department massively supporting our team and helping us make this shot possible. @ncis_cbs @cbstv #ncis  And the result? A CBS original! The key art for Season 18 of “NCIS,” the longest running drama currently on CBS, beat out only by “Lassie” at 19 years and “Gunsmoke” at 20 years! That’s Wilmer Valderrama, Sean Murray, newcomers Katrina Law and Gary Cole, Rocky Carroll, Diona Resonover, Brian Dietzen, David McCallum, and in the power booth, Mark Harmon…in Elaine’s diner which sits just outside the soundstages at Santa Clarita Studios where the show is in production. This was a fairly complex shot that was part of a fairly complex shoot that involved two groups and eight singles all while the show was in production. The diner group was shot in four pieces and added one of the talent in post (from pre-existing art work). At the last minute we added and photographed the waitress at far left and the anonymous patron exiting at top right…just to give the scene a sense of movement. While I have many people to thank for their collaboration on this project I have to shout out @samanassefi who made the whole production run on time…from crew testing to talent scheduling. Amazing. @jtergo managed the lighting on a grey seamless (two looks), outside the diner and inside the diner where he hand held a number of different sources as we finessed the smaller groups within the bigger group. @evanmulling managed client expectations and my wanting to be in three places at once, all while melting in the 98 degree heat. And of course the miracle worker @angiemariehayes who comped and masked and dodged and burned color corrected and built and extended and light-shifted this file seamlessly. And thank you to @strixdigital for nailing the vertical so beautifully! Since the show aired in 2003 I’ve been fortunate to have photographed the cast a few times, and I’ve included a few of those oldies, if you swipe left. Thank you, thank you, thank you to @missbeane, @hello__its__bre and @danishkids for their inspired collaboration! #markharmon @wilmervalderrama #wilmervalderrama @therealseanhmurray @katrinalaw @briankdietzen @dionareasonover #garycole #rockycarroll @ncis_cbs @cbstv
