i have a lot of thoughts i'd like to document about mcr's auckland show, but here's just some of the things gerard said that hit me particularly hard.

first off, of course, we have the quote of the whole night, which i'll try not to dwell on too much.

"In the face of extermination, say fuck you."

there have been many posts about this. despite it not being included in the live stream, this video swept the dashboard. there is a pride flag front and centre in the audience. gerard is barely visible but all we needed was his voice. within hours it had inspired countless textposts and art pieces. i know i'm not the only one who cried. it is exactly what i needed to hear during this time of trans rights being rolled back all over the world. then came this video where you can see gerard. they walk right to the front centre stage, legs planted strongly in their skirt and tights, face set with intent, and he spits out those words for the whole world to hear.

now this next one i have not seen any posts about, but it struck a chord with me anyways. before planetary go they speak to the audience:

"You all look wonderful. You do. I see you when the lights are bright on us. I see you. Don't worry, I see you. There's some wonderful costumes. If they're costumes. Are they costumes?" The audience yells back with a resounding "No!" source video

every night my chemical romance performs, they look out to a crowd of visibly queer people staring right back at them. my mcr show was the first time i saw my trans best friend able to walk into the men's bathroom with his head held high. recently there has been a huge onslaught of anti-transgender laws across the world. i'm sure we've all seen posts pointing out that gerard's cheerleader dress they wore in Nashville would now be illegal. the new tennessee bill bans "male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest." many people have claimed the bill is 'only' about drag performers, as if that would make it okay, but we know that is not true. right-wingers have proven time and time again they view trans women as nothing more than "female impersonators". they treat transgender bodies as nothing but a fetish, or a prurient interest. they argue against gender-affirming medical care on the same phone they use to watch transgender porn. they believe transgender identity and queerness is a costume. it is something we can take on and off. something they can ban and eradicate from their country. but it's not a fucking costume. it's who we are.

which leads me to the encore. this was the only show during their tour with a planned one-song encore (excluding festivals), and that song was their most famous of all time, welcome to the black parade. the band walks back on stage and the only thing gerard says is

"Be who the fuck you are." video

an incredibly important statement that has always been a core part of my chemical romance's message. but with everything that's been going on, with frank saying one of his favourite thing about these tours is "g being able to just be himself", with gerard's gnc outfits making headlines, i feel like that was the perfect sentence to close the show

on my chemical romance's history of racism:

(edit: i wont rewrite anything since that will create discrepancies in reblogs. however, i will include these important additions: post 1 and post 2)

cultural appropriation is a neutral term that turns negative when people co-opt a culture without consideration to its people and history, or their prejudices and privileges. the rising sun japanese flag is an imperialist symbol used during japan's occupation of other countries from 1870 to 1945 (the guardian 2019). unlike other symbols of terror, the rising sun is normalized because of the japanese government's refusal to acknowledge its history. the symbol's meaning was popularized a few years ago when people from south korea protested its legality in the 2020 tokyo olympics (bbc 2020). aware or unaware of its history, americans have long appropriated the rising sun. in part because of their fascination with japanese art, in part because of orientalism -- a fixation on asian cultures that centers "exoticism".

my chemical romance has been associated with the rising sun symbol a couple of times. frank iero used to have a tattoo of it. gerard way designed frank's killjoys outfit to include it (seen in concept art and music videos). it is often used in mcr fanart.

tokenism is when something contains limited diversity to divert criticisms for the lack of it. my chemical romance has had a very white cast of characters in their music videos and stories. in the "i dont love you" music video, a main character is in black body paint. in the casting call, they specifically asked for a white man (there is 100% an online source -- please let me know if you have it). even casting a black person for this role would place him in a video that appropriated his skin color to mark his "difference" from the light-skin female character.

the female character points to the band's main problem with tokenism. if they arent casting a white woman, theyre casting a light-skin asian woman. the woman in the "i dont love you" mv is fetishized for physical traits stereotypically attributed to east asian women: big eyes, daintiness. east asian women feature most prominently aside from the band and main characters in the "welcome to the black parade" music video and photo shoot. the photoshoot is the only place where an ashy-faced black man and ambiguously tribal? brown man are seen (brought in by photographer chris anthony per the "making of the black parade" book). the director antagonist of the danger days music videos (shown in "sing") is a japanese woman. she is the only main character of color in the music videos and the killjoys: california comics. the focus of this post is on my chemical romance, but the comics are important to showcase that the reality is never "color-blind casting" or "limited roles". it's mostly white creatives (band members and directors and artists) who ignore non-white people when they cant use them, reflected as much by gerard way years later (nyt 2019).

"japan takes over the world" is a media trope that is built on the late 20th century fear of the return of imperial japan. this trope frames japanese people as unique aggressors, feeding into "yellow peril" fears of asian people "taking over" the white race. this trope is suggested all over the danger days universe, where the corporation BL/ind overthrows the US government. the appropriation of the japanese modern flag and lettering on the killjoys outfits, the primary BL/ind villain being a japanese person who only speaks japanese in videos, the official BL/ind website having a ".jp" domain and english-japanese translations. japanese people and culture only exist in this universe to decorate and threaten.

the point of this post is not to punish my chemical romance. in the decade+ since, they have made meaningful changes -- the sing it for japan project to aid japan during the 2011 earthquake-tsunami, developing diversity in gerard's comics / tv show, a mexican-american main character in the 2020 summoning video. people of color treated as real goddamn people.

however. all these faults exist in frozen time. there is no discussion attached to the work. so anyone, fan or casual, may come across it and not notice or care for these important issues. i know all this shit and i still fail to see instances of what i highlighted. it's difficult locating not only your own prejudices but those of others. those you look up to.

"my chemical romance" is the product of many people from 2001 to 2013. many of these people were male, white, american, and/or, most radically, liberal. clearly laying out what they did wrong is important. being careful with history and culture and personhood is important. prioritizing growth is important. constantly. forever.

Gerard Quote: “I got to keep some of the masks used in Sam Bayer’s music video for ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’, which was awesome. One of the things Sam was able to do was introduce me to Colleen Atwood, one of the most celebrated costume designers in Hollywood, after I expressed a great interest in working with her on the band’s Black Parade uniforms, which I had been making doodles of for a couple months. The first thing to know about Colleen is that she’s not only insanely talented, she is one of the kindest, sweetest human beings I have met in my life, and I am very grateful we became friends through working together. I also learned a ton from her, and after the shoot and the working experience, I desperately wanted to become an apprentice of hers– just to hang out and make stuff and keep learning. A little background on Colleen is that she has been working on films for many years. She has received several Academy Awards for costume design, and she is the woman responsible for dressing the characters in everything from Memoirs of A Geisha to Edward Scissorhands, creating his iconic look for the film, along with the rest of the cast and many others. Colleen had discovered a group of mask-makers in Mexico that she loved, of which she asked to make her hundreds of masks for the shoot. I remember her explaining all the reasons she was drawn to their work, what she thought was special about them in their simplicity. I thought they were great, and it was truly a sight to see the scores of extras wearing them during the shoot, making up the bulk of the ‘black parade’. Over the years I have given one or two of these away, and I brought the remaining masks to the video shoot, ‘A Summoning’ as props or set-dressing easter-eggs. The Summoning video was used to accompany the announcement for MCR’s 2020 Reunion Tour, which would have been a very different experience had it occurred. ELEANORE'S A BLONDE NO MORE! THE HARVELLES ATTEND NEIGHBOURHOOD PARTY IN COSTUME!

It's officially Spooky Fest and that typically means trick or treating and costume parties galore, and The Earl and Countess of Harvelle, with their little darling Lady Ella, were spotted attending one yesterday!

The entire family donned costumes for the neighbourhood bash, with Eleanore dressing up as a popular fairytale princess (complete with a black wig), while her real-life (former) Crown Prince dressed up as... well... Prince Charming. A little on the nose, yes, but it's also kind of adorable, especially if you add little Ella into the mix, who also came as a "princess" complete with a "golden" plastic tiara!

The family of three walked to the party, held a couple of houses down their country home. The party was a fun time for the neighbourhood kids to play, have fun, and indulge in sweets! One source shared:

"It was really for the kids, but the parents had loads of fun, too. There was good food and even greater company. There were about 20 adults and just as many kids. They had a clown and a bouncy house set up, too. There was a face painting booth and a photo booth. Everyone had a blast."

When asked about the Harvelle's attendance, the source further revealed:

"They've become part of the community. They know everyone and everyone knows them, of course. There were no curtseys or formalities - they came as Eleanore and Ibrahim and everyone adores little Ella. That girl is such a sweetheart. I think that's a huge part of why they love it here and they decided to settle here. We leave them be, give them their privacy, but at the same time we've let them know that they're welcome here."

However, not everyone is as "welcoming" to the family's choice of costume. Some commenters online have poked fun at the family's choice of outfits for the soiree. One person wrote:

"This is kinda sad and a lot hilarious. Ibrahim, in particular, should've thought twice about wearing that. This is a man who would've been a KING of a d*mn country. A REAL LIFE KING. And now here he is parading in a §10 costume, looking like a loon. Pathetic."

Another wrote:

"Eleanore's trying really, really hard to stay relevant and remind everyone that she's a princess. Yeah. You were. Once. And now you aren't. Because you were a massive spoiled brat and because you wanted to compete with your sister. But you'll never be Anya. This is so cringe. And the kid... I feel bad for her for being born into that mess of a family. Someone tell Eleanore her kid's no princess coz the queen didn't make her one. I give the whole "marriage" 5 years, tops. Their (sic) both narcissists and you just know that they're getting tired of each others (sic) crap. This is very desperate and so low even for them."

Well, you just can't please everybody, so it seems. For what it's worth, we think Lady Ella looks adorable, and we're 100% convinced every little girl deserves to be treated like a princess - royal or not.

Hellllllloooooooo, omg I had so much fun writing this, reading through everything and dissecting information. It reminded me how much I love to research and learn.

But buckle up peoples this is a long one. 

**Initial thoughts while watching the video (before any research or reading anything):

The ladder at the beginning

Is he finally coming down to earth? (The rover from mars, finally coming back down to earth.)

Where is he coming from and where does this ladder lead?

Was he up there looking for something?

Then later I had the thought if this was purgatory, but I’ll explain later

Celesine Venus and lyric matching

That caught my eye fast but I didn’t know where it was from

This caught my eye, and it could just be a transitional piece for the music video

Santus Circus 

I wanted to check if this had any meaning and it’s an actual circus and they provide their equipment.

Which is pretty of cool of Harry and nice for the circus, hopefully they get tons of business now.

Harry on a horse

At first I was like are you showing off, peacocking here cause he looks cute on a horse I will say

But it kind of interesting to end on this darker look but the contrast against the blue sky, chef kiss again.

Fashion

I alway love the styling and fashion choices in Harry’s work, they’re just a chef kiss. This video is probably my favorite so far. I loved the skeleton

Also what his role in the circus? Is he the ring master, what is his place? It feel like there’s something missing. A puzzle piece.

I noticed the colors as well, they felt familiar for some reason, but yes very vivid and dream like.

Self reflection and growth he’s going, maybe his spiritual journey, he’s learning and growing

Maybe he is in a time of self reflection, has he had time to reflect and also thinking about everything, he’s been on the go-go for so long.

Penny farthing bike and vintage circus 

Yes that’s for sure that kind of bike, and it’s interesting because I always found those bikes scary, I’m scared of heights so that fall would hurt.

And a pull from the wiki article: It became obsolete in the late 1880s with the development of modern bicycles, which provided similar speed amplification via chain-driven gear trains and comfort through pneumatic tires, and were marketed in comparison to penny-farthings as "safety bicycles" because of the reduced danger of falling and the reduced height to fall from.

Another interesting pull: Although the trend was short-lived, the penny-farthing became a symbol of the late Victorian era. Its popularity also coincided with the birth of cycling as a sport. Playing with symbols again.

But in this music video he’s playing with heights, and trying to reach heights, and there’s a risk when you’re doing these stunts and trying to reach heights. If you fall you’re going to get hurt bad. 

Charlie Chaplin:

Yes, let’s freaking go, I love old school Hollywood and the start of cinema, I don’t know if you ever listen to this podcast: http://www.youmustrememberthispodcast.com but its so good and gives great context to what was going on and stories lost to history. 

But things that stood out to me: The Tramp, as portrayed by Chaplin, is a childlike, bumbling but generally good-hearted character who is most famously portrayed as a vagrant who endeavours to behave with the manners and dignity of a gentleman despite his actual social status. 

Chaplin's social commentary, while critical of the faults and excesses created by industrialization, also shows support for and belief in the "American Dream".

The obsession of working with efficiency and assembly-line productivity ultimately drives the Tramp mad. This could be seen as "an attack on the capitalist rationalization of production." However, "the film also guardedly affirms American middle-class, particularly its optimism." For example, one sequence depicts the Tramp's dream in which he and the gamine live a traditional middle-class lifestyle.

*The Ladder*

This was bothering me, like it was the first thing, where is it going, why is he coming down from it. So I started looking into a ladder leading to the sky to figure out the symbolism, I was starting to think is it stairs to heaven? But it’s a ladder. And when I think of the sky I think of the heavens and space etc. But after finding what I found it made me think, is he in purgatory?

So what I found was the story of Jacob's Ladder, I’ll pull some interesting things:

As I was surfing through Tumblr after the video dropped, I noticed some were asking, where’s the blue bird? Why wasn’t he dressed as a blue bird, why is he the yellow bird. And some confusion because he's singing about a blue bird but he's yellow. 

And I’m like exactly, and I’m like yes they’re catching on, because like we said he’s the yellow bird, he’s not fully free, he’s a performer, a singer, he can’t up and fly away. So after the Celesine Venus and lyric matching and someone brought up on Tumblr the death card, I don’t have the link tho. But then cards started to pop into my head.

Death Card: Tho on the death card it’s normally a white horse and in the music video I can’t tell if the sun is rising or going down. I'm thinking its setting and its the golden hour.

Let me throw this out there. I was thinking about the past few music videos and the album as a whole. And I wonder, when we think of Harry’s House, we think of the physical space. The physical symbols, you are home door etc. But what if he was inviting us all into his mind, into his dreams? And I saw some comments that his videos don’t make sense,. But when do our dreams and fantasies we have in our head make sense? It’s our brain trying to figure out the outside world or its spirit sending out symbols. 

And when you look through his music videos through that lens and looking at dream symbolism that’s when it gets interesting and more fun as well. 😜🧐

When I saw it was Sagittarius I immediately thought about him being on the horse later so I wonder if that ties in. Sagittarius is known for being the sign of higher education, philosophy, and religion, and it rules travel. It makes me feels like the horse at the end may symbolize him either beginning this journey to higher understanding or highlighting that he reached the Sagittarius state, like he’s more self aware and educated and worldly.

Okay basically I was talking about how I think Harry sees himself as Pierrot and is always pining for his Columbine. The sad clown becomes friends with the moon. This character is supposed to be a comic relief character.

Okay! So I remembered after I posted my post yesterday about this tidbit I read at the Blues museum in St. Louis. It said that touring blues musicians started out touring with side show circuses as a way to reach people. We also see this in the Elvis movie, how Elvis started with touring with the local fair/circus. Many artists play fairs early in their career, specifically in the Country music field. Furthermore, the touring life is part of the circus as well as for Harry. There is a resonance there, it’s a similar lifestyle.

Bluebird

I think we talked about bluebird symbolism and how it was used in Bukowski poem to represent this hope or this dream, creative outlet as this bluebird that he has caged inside. Miranda Lambert has a song called Bluebird too. I think it’s interesting because he’s saying he can’t be a bluebird. Presumably he can’t be a bluebird like his person. But also it’s kind of this heartbreaking experience right. Like I wish I could be what you need but I can’t. If I could, I’d give you the world but I can’t be. And a lot of relationships have this outcome where ultimately you realize you just can’t be what they want or need and that means you aren’t meant to be together. It’s one of the most heartbreaking moments ya know? Also blue represents sadness and yellow represents joy. I think in his growth he’s accepting he can’t go back, he can only be who he is now and he has to release the past.

the idea for these little monsters came to me after i stumbled on localcrooks and her nu metal lucky cats on instagram and i decided to challenge myself a little more with the fineliner markers my stepdad left behind. i brought in mcr because i’ve always loved the costumes for the black parade; and it wouldn’t be complete without their source of inspiration for said costumes, sgt. pepper. all bright and bold fused with my trademark use of black.

WELCOME TO NSD!!  We are so excited to see everyone in class!! I hope you all had an amazing summer!! We are ready to celebrate our 20th season and can’t wait to dance with you!!

Applefest Parade Sunday, September 17th @ 1pm

I will email out our parade number and location as soon as it becomes available.

Comp Dancers – Team shirts, shorts and good walking shoes.

Rec Dancers – Solid Pink Tshirt, bike shorts and good walking shoes.

Please meet your dancer at the end of the parade route by the softball field at the high school. Parents are welcome to join us in the parade.

Please use this link to sign up to join us in the parade.  We need a minimum of 15 dancers to participate. 

Butterbraid Fundraiser begins Monday, September 11th.  A separate email will be sent with more info.

The BAND app will be your go to for all studio info.  An invite to your dancers class BAND will be sent to all account holders.  Monthly emails and bulletin board posts will also be a great source of information for all studio happenings.  NSD staff is always here to help, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns please don’t hesitate to let us know.

Monthly Tuition and Late Fees – NEW UPDATES

Monthly tuition is due the first of every month.  Monthly statements are NOT sent home.  You may pay online, drop in the tuition box by the studio office, or mail it in.  There is a $20 late fee for tuition that is paid after the 11th of the month.  This will be strictly enforced.  There are no refunds for missed classes.  Thank you in advance for paying on time.

Studio policies are listed on our website on the schedule page and are agreed upon during your online registration. 

Costume Payments

1st costume payment will be due October 1st.  The second costume payment will be due November 1st.  No costume refunds after November 10th or once the costume order has been placed.

Missed Classes

Please fill out this form if your dancer will be absent from class. 

Dress Code

The dress code is listed in the brochure and will be enforced by the instructor.  Students learn their best and safest if they are in the correct attire.  Children in combo classes must have both pairs of shoes required.  Students will be asked to observe class if they are not in the proper attire.  No T-shirts allowed.  

Base attire for all classes – leotard and tights, yoga pants and shorts can be worn for tap, jazz and hip hop.

Specific class attire for the following classes:

Ballet I - purple leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers (no ballet skirts)

Ballet II – royal blue leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers (no ballet skirts)

Ballet III – red leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers (ballet skirts optional)

Ballet IV - black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers (ballet skirts optional)

Important Reminder - Please make sure you are there to pick up your dancer when class has ended.  The teacher is not responsible for your child once class has ended due to starting the following class on time.  If you will be late or someone else is picking up your child, please inform the teacher.

We have a snack bar in the family lounge for your convenience.  Please keep all food in the family lounge, this includes all drinks except water.

At this time the family lounge is ONLY open to dancers and staff.
