So I'm still obsessed with spirit designs for mob psycho 100 characters. It has not ended...SO come along with me as I continue on this adventure.
I wrote out my initial thoughts here: https://www.tumblr.com/ygodmyy20/739079912539996160/this-week-is-hard-mode-emotionally-so-were-gonna?source=share
And you can see the cute chibi versions of Teru and Shigeo here https://www.tumblr.com/ygodmyy20/739362691235315712/spirit-cuddles?source=share
Below the cut are closeups and more of my descriptions!
Shigeo
The most defined out of all the designs as if you look at my initial post, I take a lot of inspiration from @sodasexual but I diverged a bit in some things I liked more like the design of his tail and feet
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like the idea that his whole body is just a galaxy of ever changing stars. He and Ritsu have aquatic qualities to them but you can see Ritsu is MUCH more...well, fish like haha Shigeo is this mixture of aquatic and kinda cat-like. I like his hair being like ???% hair. Where it is a little wavy.
He has fins coming off his body that come off at different spots. Still figuring them out. But the direction I want to go in is they are kinda like axolotl fins.
When he gets upset his color changes to a deep purple and blue and when he is happy it is a bright pink. It is similar to how I imagine his aura reacts to his emotions. If he is VERY upset he will be black, with only specks of red, and you barely will be able to see the white of his eyes. Very very similar to ???%
When Shigeo gains more power (similar to Teru) his form grows and changes. I haven’t gotten the details in my head quite yet but more appendages, larger body, more fins, his “hair” grows and changes. As we fondly say he looks a touch more eldritch in nature. His increased power form may look slightly more terrifying but he’s the same old lil guy, just in a massive spirit form.
(Also does Teru love Shigeos spirit form even when it’s eldritch and full of stars and galaxies and black holes? Um yes of course hahah he adores it. Also yes we terumob here not sure if that was….clear hahaha now it is)
Teru
Teru is my beautiful feathery seraphim!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
look at his lil face!!
Teru's form can grown into a much more biblical-looking angel if he gains power, but his default is this light and nimble feathered spirit. Lots of his design takes from the elemental look of fire. In future I want lightening to make more of an appearance but I am just sticking with fire for now.
Teru is covered in feathers, and has at least 3 pairs of large ones down his back. He also has two little tufts where his ears would be. His color is also ever changing. He can blend from oranges to yellows to whites and even turquoise and purples. But his base color is oranges and yellows.
(And yes Shigeo also loves Terus spirit form, when he finally saw it for the first time he knew it was perfect!)
Ritsu
Tumblr media
So far Ritsu matches a lot of Shigeo's general look and feel but he is more green in color, like an ocean, and he has a sharpness to him around his form. His tail is dark and sharp, and his entire body when upset will bristle and become sharp like a cactus.
Ritsu is not all sharp though. His hair is wavy kinda like seaweed. Taking his current longer hair in canon and just making it longer and more wavvy.
So yeah. That's where I have gotten to!! Thanks for joining me on this fun journey. I'll keep playing with these spirit designs and evolving them - you haven't seen the last of 'em!

Game Assets Notes
These are plants shown in Dragon Age but aren't named in universe, just in their model files or through identification of the textures. Since most filler plant textures are just that of real world plants.
**NOTE:** When I mention they are not the known name of any plant, this comes with the caveat of being popular common names. Common names are highly variable and inconsistent. They depend on regional knowledge and association. Some travel farther than others. Common names are also not reliable identifiers.
Acacia: Black Wood ~ Note: Black Wood is a type of acacia. Both acacia and black wood are named assets.
Artichoke ~ Note: Identification comes from asset name, the artichoke flower is used as ornamentation of a box.
Banyan Tree
Boxwood ~ A type of shrub, identification comes from asset name.
Bradford Pear ~ Their fruits are edible, however their flowers are known to emit a smell akin to rotting meat. Identification comes from asset name.
Calla Lily ~ Note: Not named but identified by the texture used. It is seen in Val Royeaux planters.
Cattail ~ Note: Seen through out DAO and DAI, identification comes from asset name.
Coleus ~ Note: Not named but identified by the texture used. It is seen in Val Royeaux planters and in the Frostback Basin.
Crape Myrtle
Cypress: Italian Cypress, Topiary Cypress ~ Note: In terms of the Italian Cypress, in world it wouldl likely be called the "Antivan Cypress" given that Antiva is pulling from Italian culture, food, environments, and other inspirational elements. Cypress is a plant that is named in canon.
Daikon Radish ~ Note: Found on Dennet's farm, identification comes from asset name.
Dogwood
Elephant Ear ~ Note: Foliage found in the Frostback Basin, identification comes from asset name.
Fade Berry
Fern: Red Fern, Sword Fern ~ Note: The red fern isn't a real plant and therefore can be considered unique to Thedas. In contrast the sword fern is a real plant. Identification comes from the asset name for both of these ferns.
Forest Clover
Foxleaf ~ Note: This is another plant that is not real, no plant has this common name as far as I could find.
Gasbloom ~ Note: Seen in the Arbor Wilds, the Frostback Basin some elven ruins, and the elven ruins of multiplayer levels. Their identification comes from the asset name. There are two versions of the texture the "fixed" version is used in JoH dlc and thus explains the difference in appearance. This is not the name of a known mushroom.
Hero Tree
Palm: Curly Palm, Fan Palm ~ Note: Both palms are seen in the Frostback Basin, both are identified by their named assets.
Pear Cactus ~ Note: Found in the Frostback Basin, identification comes from the asset name.
Pine: Chir Pine
Ponga Tree ~ Note: Also known as the 'Tree Fern'. This is the tree you see in Val Royeaux garden as coming from Par Vollen, and throughout the Arbor Wilds.
Redwood ~ Note: Identified by the name of the file asset. Found in the Winter Palace, Exalted Plains, and on multiplayer maps.
Snapdragon
Trex
Waterweed ~ Note: In real life this is an entire genus not one particular plant. Though the six plants in this genus do share the common name of waterweed.
White Birch
Witchhazel
Additional Notes and Trivia
Ironwood - Unclear if this is an alternative name, the actual name of the plant, or both.
Morel - This mushroom is inferred due to the existence of Blighted Morel. However it is not explicitly specified there is a non-blighted morel.
Sponge Root - Though canonical as it is mentioned and shown in World of Thedas vol. 2 on pg. 138 with a collection of deep mushroom and surface mushroom illustrations. This mushroom was cut twice from Inquisition. It was cut from the base game as a craftable, it had a much different appearance from its final design, and then it was cut again from Trespasser. It does however still make an appearance in Inquisition as the inventory icon for Crystal Grace.
Unnamed Glowing Mushroom Is mentioned in multiplayer when there are two Lukas playing.
Unnamed Mushroom These brown mushrooms are seen in the Fallow Mire and the Frostback Basin. They are shown in two different sizes ranging from shorter than a dwarf to taller than one.
There is one unlisted mushroom, its assets is named "red mushroom" and thus is identified by textures. These is not a canon name but is included for completeness. Amanita Muscaria: More commonly know as fly agaric or fly amanita, the red top with white spots is an iconic in its imagery. You will find large swaths of these mushrooms in the Frostback Basin. Their assets is named "Red Mushroom".
Winterberry is a real plant. However, from what we see in DA2, it does not the same as the plant we have in the real world, just a shared common name.
Wormroot is another real plant name. However, due to the description in The Calling, it does not seem to be the same plant. In The Calling it is used to treat the venom of a giant spider. The real world plant is used to treat parasites in the gut and does not seem to hold any shared uses in folk lore, folk medicine, or western medicine practices.

Fox Runner Effigy Vessel
Moche
400-700
The anthropomorphic fox on this effigy vessel wears a large disc headdress associated with the Ritual Runners, figures shown racing through the desert landscape in many examples of Moche art. Similar discs in gold and copper have been found in elite burials, suggesting that the Ritual Runners were a high-ranking group of adult males, possibly priests, who participated in special ceremonies throughout the Moche territory. Scholars believe that Moche priests consumed the hallucinogenic San Pedro cactus (Echinopsis pachanoi) to transform themselves into animal spirit helpers such as the fox.

The Kiwi director bringing live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender to life
Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is arguably one of the biggest productions of the year. The project, which has a budget of US$120 million, has captured imaginations worldwide since its debut last month. Today, Netflix confirmed the series will be renewed for two more seasons.
One of the visionaries behind the new show is Asian-New Zealand creative Roseanne Liang. Serving as co-executive producer and director of episodes five and six, Liang knows the responsibility she carries in taking a beloved story from script to screen.
"It is a huge weight to bear," she says.
"We wanted to provide the best thing in the spirit of why we love the original Avatarand that's all we can really operate through. Have faith, trust our instincts that our hearts are pure, our minds are true and we're doing the best we can."
It all started in 2021, when Liang's agent called her about the show. Netflix was looking specifically for pan-Asian directors and her name was on the list.
"I knew about the show because all my friends had been saying 'you need to watch it' at various points. I was like, 'oh it's a Nickelodeon animation' and they're like, 'no, you don't understand. It is life, it's got one of the best dramatic arcs ever, you've got to watch this show' ... I watched the hell out of the three seasons and became a convert. Everything everyone told me was true."
Liang says there were huge challenges in adapting a 20-episode, half-hour animated series into eight hours of epic live-action television.
"The world is so rich, there's bending, there's all this flora and fauna and animals, it's this pan-Asian, indigenous world that is taking from cultures that seem familiar to us but are different and new. The challenge of that world-building was vast.
"It's also hard to get the tone into your head - you can do silly things like sucking frogs and cactus juice in the animation - because it's animation - but I don't know if you can have the tonal whiplash in a live-action like that.
"We'd always have to find that line. The dramatic can't be too dramatic, we've gotta undercut it with probably a quip or something, but the funny can't be too slapstick cause people will be like, what is this."
Liang says casting for the project also came with a bit of pressure. Season one follows a 12-year-old Aang, 14-year-old Katara and 15-year-old Sokka, and finding young actors capable of undertaking the roles was "scary".
"They're all teenagers. I think Dallas (Zuko) is a bit older but still young, just in his early 20s. It's all about casting the right actor - and person. Because the person needs to be able to deal with the pressure of what they're about to go through.
"The children had an incredible support network though. Dallas Liu and Ian Ousley (Sokka), they were best mates, they chose to room together in Vancouver where we shot and they were each other's support buddies. I just love their bromance, it's a beautiful thing when cast members look after each other like that."
The Netflix adaptation attracted some scrutiny after the creators of the original series - Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino - stepped away from the project citing creative differences after being involved for two years. Liang says their departure was "a source of pain and dismay".
"We cared so deeply about the source material ... at the same time, we know what we're doing it for. Some things won't live up to people's understanding, we're never going to be able to completely mimic or mirror the animation, but some things - I've gotta hand it to the writing team - some things they made even better."
A plot tweak in episode six, directed by Liang, follows Zuko's journey in a way that strengthens what the character stands for - Liang argues, better than the animation itself. While episode four features the addition of one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking flashbacks of the series, the funeral of Iroh's son Lu Ten.
"The Leaves from the Vine storyline about how much Iroh grapples with his part in the war and the cost of who he was in the army, the writers were like, we think we can add this moment in here to really cement the relationship between Zuko and Iroh.
"Zuko did an immense kindness to Uncle Iroh by sitting with him in mourning and it is a gift that Iroh repays. That relationship is one of the most rewarding, beautiful, fun, funny relationships of the whole series."
As a Chinese-New Zealander, Liang says it was a huge honour to be involved in a project that highlights the richness of a pan-Asian, indigenous world.
"It was the ethos of the entire production team that we do something new in this sphere that won't draw the silly, polarised calls of "wokeness" because it makes complete sense in this beautiful world that Bryan and Michael created in the original series. It was always diverse and that was their vision.
"All we had to do was serve that vision and it was just the most natural thing in the world."
While she hadn't worked on a project of this scale before, Liang could draw on rich experience from her involvement in local productions such as Creamerie (with RNZ's own Perlina Lau), Banana in a Nutshell and My Wedding and Other Secrets. She hopes her success inspires other New Zealand creatives to aim for the stars.
"Just because we come from a small country or are part of a diasporic community, that's no barrier to working at this level ... whether it's your ethnicity or your upbringing, don't let it limit you because you can get there."
In fact, Liang's "New Zealand-ness" was a strength on set. Wearing an 'Aroha Mai, Aroha Atu' shirt, she explained that the Māori phrase means 'love received, love returned' - an understanding that helped connect with the First Nations indigenous crew that worked on the show.
"The ethos that we have in New Zealand, the multi-cultural understanding of people and relating to each other, it helps - so much of my job is feeling people's energy and giving my own energy back to them and growing up in New Zealand where these - usually indigenous - ideas of how to serve people and act with love has served me so well.
"It's really been nothing but an asset to my entire process."

Adeia 2023
- The gods have been very good to my garden this year. I even had four plants make a miraculous recovery after I was certain they would die. So this year I'm thanking them for it with honey libations and by repotting everyone to air out the soil and fertilize it, and focusing mostly on asking for regular rain. We had some rain this winter, which should NOT happen, and on the other hand I've never seen less rain in a wet season...which of course did not stop my city from flooding because it used to be a wetland. I'm asking Ba'al for lots of rain next summer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured here: wild amaranth, rosemary, marigold, arnica + lavender, wild Mexican tea and a baby chayote.
- I also prayed for Demeter's blessings for the sustainable urban designs I'm submitting to the relevant government departments some time next week, and for a proposal I want to introduce in my neighborhood to switch to native grass species, plant more flowers for native pollinators and upgrade outside lighting to be more firefly-friendly. I also asked her, and Persephone, to protect agricultural land, which is being threatened by both global warming and an increasingly violent political situation.
- Collected organic waste in a jar for three days to mix with the plants' new potting soil. A friend of my grandmother's gave us chicken eggs from his sustainable farm so I felt more pressed to not just throw the egg shells away and show my thanks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured here: a grinding stone shaped like a pig, for Demeter, and crushed eggshells in a jar mixed with wilted carrots.
- The wheat I planted last year suffered an untimely death by pet rabbit (his name is Apollo) and the one I planted in March to replace it is taking it's time, so I offered it only in spirit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured here: rabbit-appropriate wheat (with some chickweed) and a green wheat stalk for the gods.
- I also planted cattails (ethically sourced from my local zoo's restored wetland habitat) to keep it water-themed. Some will go in my garden, others to friends' gardens, and a few to my grandmother's artificial pond.
- For the food offering, I wanted to prepare chiles en nogada, stuffed (big) peppers with walnut and goat cheese sauce and pomegranates for decoration. The ingredients for it are in season so I thought it was appropriate, but it's also a reminder that we have to think about where our food comes from and protect those sources. Chiles en nogada are a traditional September dish; unfortunately, the recipe has changed in recent years because one of the ingredients used in the stuffing, called acitrón, comes from a barrel cactus species which is now endangered. Alas, it's quite a labor-intensive dish and it's a busy weekend for my family, so we're making it next week instead.

I always thought it was really dumb that Katara didn't use the water from the spirit oasis when the Gaang was in the desert. I know they'd need that later in the story to bring Aang back to life, but it just seemed forced to me
They were lost in the desert for, what, a day and a half? That's way too early to use something Katara herself said she was saving for something important that would require MORE than just "okay, we need some water now" be it to drink, to use in a fight, to heal someone, etc.
We gotta remember Katara and Sokka lived in an ice-desert. One that had been wrecked by war and genocide, and the strongest members like Hakoda had left. In a place like this you learn pretty early on that it's better to, say, give everyone just enough food that they can still function and they'll still have food for a month, than if everyone gets enough food to be satisfied, but then there's nothing left a week later.
The Gaang was in a tough spot. But they were on the move, they were (mostly) sane, and no one was showing any sign that they NEEDED water otherwise there'd be some serious consequences for their health. They had a bit of regular water on them, Katara's bending water, managed to get a bit from a cloud, and even though the cactus juice turned out not to be a great source, that still meant there could have been some plants that maybe less of a risk.
It makes total sense that Katara would save the magic water for later, in case they were stuck in the desert for a few more days and things started to get truly unbearable.

Dyes and Colour Palette Correspondence
In Minecraft, there are 16 different coloured dyes available in-game, which also shares similar shades and colours alongside many other blocks as well
When building something related to a spell or dedicated with a specific intention like an altar or a temple, utilising these colours in your block palette can complement what you're aiming for.
Of course, much like any component to a spell, these are just additional dressing and so you don't have to include them in your builds, but I find it fun at least to work with a certain palette when making a build for spells and rituals.

Mutucule Farm #17
2023-05-15, session #17 of Mutucule Farm! Year 2, Summer 11 through Summer 22!
Cast:
me (@mothmute)
Belle (@snacco)
Cam (@amanitaspore), sadly absent
Erin (@salamand3rin)
Highlights include but are not limited to:
Summer 11:
I’m still in the pocket of Big Hog
Sturggling with the Sturgeons
Luau!
you weren’t just gonna eat a raw football, were you?
The governor seems a little hungry...
You ever eat soup so good you start vibrating?
we made so many friends! achievement soup!
Night farming! Didn’t have time to water everything in the morning!
Pompkin is your orange bastard? he’s our orange bastard
Summer 12:
Married life treating us well, Belle and I get stardrops! Erin is excluded.
so much friendship, we all get mailboxes full of recipes. spaghetti, salmon dinner, etc.
I go to continue funding the Hogs instead of housing upgrades ...
walk in on Shane drinking himself to death— I watered him, so he’s gonna grow up big and strong
... but I can’t get more Hogs until the barn upgrade finishes, whoops!
Hey, beach box! ... full of bombs!
(Erin has been visited by the yardwork fairy IRL, her audio is spotty for a while)
A train?? Erin lets me borrow Fella to go check it out. nothing.
Constable was stuck in a tree, but then he did a little shimmy and he got free
Evelyn is purchasing an octopus! —no fucking way, those things suck!
Summer 13:
Spirits have been displeased every day this session, must be ‘cause Cam isn’t here
Belle’s at level 9 farming, so she should harvest the crops (and choose correctly)
New pigs! Sheriff, Deputy, S.Trooper (”StateTrooper” wouldn’t fit), and Special Agent
set hogs to maximum!!
Cutscene with Kickflip— I go ahead and suggest experimental noise rock again, is there any point to suggesting anything else?
immediately get a second cutscene, wherein he gets an egg as a “snack” and drops it. Jody hears it from across the house and rushes to the scene of the crime, and gasped in horror; “This is absolutely terrible!”
I took the fall for him anyway— “no, the egg did.”
ANYWAY I was just here to give you some dumb soda
Belle finally got her axe together
“hey, what should I do today?” “it’s 8PM”
Erin considers making her house bigger to make room for Krobus, so he can come curl up in the corner and eat void mayonnaise straight out of the jar
Summer 14:
BELLE CHOOSES INCORRECTLY (nah that’s fine)
Pompkin is positioned for maximum obstruction; ConcernedApe clearly knows how cats work.
y’know, when the kegs were in the way, they were in constant use; now that they’re tucked neatly in the corner, nothing.
Erinbucks, making coffee
Belle loves Joja so much, she has her own Joja sign over her bed and everything
Summer 15:
Jodi wants a fish, the slimier the better
Kent wants a starfruit; “yeah, well, we all want things”
Pierre wants one (1) grape, so he can microdose on wine
Quest for the prismatic jelly!
Sebastian is fine with getting hammered, actually
Erin didn’t get the fish Jodi wanted, and now she’s anxious about holding up dinner and Vincent going hungry (see gallery)
Belle goes on a motorcyle ride with Sebastian (her husband), who says he “[doesn’t] normally bring girls here”
We conclude that Leah has both an ex-boyfriend and an ex-girlfriend, both named Kel.
Summer 16:
Accidentally gave Penny a cactus; she’s fine with this.
look, you don’t KNOW that my shirt was made with green little guy blood! it could be a vegan substitute!
bird wanders into the fire, emerges unscathed.
hey, know what fishers call the sewers? the carpal tunnel! 😎
Erin gets a soggy newspaper, but doesn’t tell us the soggy news
I spend all day in the mines hunting prismatic slime
Erin sacrifices herself for her coffee, but she didn’t even get the last one in, so it was all for naught.
Summer 17:
Pompkin clipping in the blueberries
Unethically sourced coffee; unfair trade; Erins were harmed in the making of this coffee.
I barely escape the mines with my life, after taunting the floating skulls one too many times
(and I almost go to Belle’s house instead of my own)
Summer 18:
back in the mines, I find a box of frozen tears. what’s the deal with those, anyway? whose tears are they?
Belle eats her pocket calamari
“where did that come from?” “I don’t understand the question”
no balrogs were harmed in the making of this film. they’re an endangered species, you know
Summer 19:
“just take the eggs and speak no more of this.”
Belle waters the goats; you don’t want your goat to dry out, do you?
Belle has collected 50 milk for my Purposes!
“don’t drink it all at once!” “but my bones would get SO STRONG!”
Camo pigs, hiding in the melons
(there’s a note in here about Jodi getting hammered, but I don’t remember the context. I feel like it might’ve been pam, actually?)
Can you imagine being a prismatic slime?
Summer 20:
oh right, my axe is ready, and probably has been for a few days
right, the milk! thank you!
Jas and Vincent meeting up without Penny, now that she’s a housewife
Penny probably left Jas in charge, Vincent is just like “I’m gonna eat dirt”
Erin is gonna get serial murdered!! (I jumped out wearing a mask)
I found the prismatic slime!
it’s late, so Erin just gets into bed with my wife.
Black? Phillip gave birth to a baby goat!!
named “lil phil”, got it in one!
default name was apparently “zenoze”, which kept sounding like “the nose” to me
Summer 21:
Penny watered some crops :)
Lewis wants truffle oil and says not to ask why, which IMMEDIATELY makes it so much more suspicious
I got two prismatic slime so I’m trying to figure out a way to preserve one of them for posterity
“maybe what’s his named, in the place" will buy it? (no, Marlon doesn’t buy it)
I try putting it on a table, which doesn’t work; and leaving its image on a sign, which does work (for now)
I go to make the delivery and try not to get eaten by the wizard
(“he doesn’t make it quick” “well, you wouldn’t want him to”)
Axe swap!
—“and my axe!” gets me a good grade in references, something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve
Penny wants to redecorate and gives me a choice of some themes...
I mean it’s gotta be pirates, right?
(she does want me to move my stuff though so this is a note to remind myself to do that)
after not being sure what to do, it’s suggested that I go pick up after all my pigs, leaving truffles all over the place
Belle telepathically (bellepathically) offers me trash bread from a dozen paces away
Summer 22?:
we have monster musk now, we can make ourselves stinky! (see gallery)
also bombing everything, of course
TO-DO:
Upgrade coop?
Upgrade tools??
Upgrade houses???
Other construction? (slutch? fish ponds?)
at this point, I think any redesigns will be waiting ‘til winter
Bundles! ugh, we need a duck feather
Cam still needs to propose!
Stardrops!
I need to clean house a little for Penny’s benefit (Pennefit)
Gallery: (courtesy of Erin)
Tumblr media

i’m rewatching atla for the first time in like two years, and i canNOT believe how genius The Desert episode is. literally every member of the group is rendered essentially useless. aang has lost his airbending “spirit” in his grief, toph can’t “see” correctly in the sand, katara has no source of water, and sokka drinks the cactus juice and loses his intelligence/planning ability. all of them are at their worst, and the only thing left is hope—hence why katara ends up taking charge. it is just such phenomenal storytelling, highlighting each characters weaknesses and exploiting them to a desperate degree, and bringing katara’s importance as a figure in the group (not just as a bender) to the limelight for the first time in quite a while. truly glorious

Currently Fixated on the History of Pigments (for painting)
Here are some of my favorite blurbs from This Webpage:
Cobalts - HAUNTED
A family of pigments originally derived from mineral mines in Bohemia. They were named Cobalt after the word "kobolds" - the Bohemian word for spirits or ghosts, which the miners believed inhabited the pigment and caused them difficulties.
Lead-Tin Yellow - MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARED
Also known as "The Old Master's Yellow" for its use by Italian Renaissance masters like Raphael. A highly stable bright opaque yellow was used from around 1250 until the mid-17th century, when its use ceased abruptly for no obvious reason. Experts believe that its formula might have been lost due to the death of its producer. Very popular with Renaissance painters, who used it in foliage along with earth pigments, Lead-Tin Yellow seems to have many of the attributes of modern Cadmium Yellow, but little was known about it until the 1940s. Since then it has enjoyed a modest recovery.
Bone White - BONES
Obsolete; it was made by burning bones to a white ash. Cennino Cennini in his Il Libro dell'Arte says 'the best bones are from the second joints and wings of fowls and capons; the older they are, the better; put them into the fire just as you find them under the table.' It was used as a ground for panels.
Carmine - BUG PAINT
Used since Antiquity, Carmine is a natural organic crimson pigment/dye made from the dried bodies of the female insect Coccus cacti (Cochineal), which inhabits the prickly-pear cactus, and also from a wingless insect living on certain species of European live oaks (Kermes). The cactus insects were first heated in ovens, then dried in the sun, to produce "silver cochineal" from which the finest pigment was made. Cochineal is still made in Mexico and India.
Lapis Lazuli - BLUE
The source of the fabulous, absolutely permanent and non-toxic natural blue pigment Ultramarine, the precious stone Lapis Lazuli is found in Central Asia, notably Afghanistan. It was employed in Ancient times as a simple ground up mineral (Lapis Lazuli or Lazuline Blue) with weak colour power. Then Persian craftsmen discovered a means of extracting the colouring agent, creating at a stroke a hugely important art material. Ultramarine arrived in Venice on Arab boats, during the Renaissance, and was named the pigment from overseas ("ultra marine"). Such was its brilliance that it rapidly attained a price that only princes and large wealthy religious organizations could afford it.
Maya Blue - LOST RECIPE
A highly resilient bright blue to greenish-blue pigment, developed by the Maya and Aztec cultures of pre-Columbian art in Mesoamerica. It is a composite of organic and inorganic compounds, notably indigo dye from the Indigofera suffruticosa plants. Originating at the beginning of the 9th century CE, it was in use as late as the 16th century in Mexico, in the paintings of the Indian Juan Gerson. It survived in Cuba until the 19th century.
