Harry: “So you're gonna poison Y/N?”
Mel: “Harry , he’s carrying the spawn of the Source, he’s throwing fire from his hands. If he shows up here, we'll do what we have to do to protect ourselves.”
Macy: “You're not even giving him a chance.”
Mel: “Macy, we gave him every chance in the world to come back to us and he threw it in our faces. He chose the Source of all evil over his own family.
Maggie: “No. He chose Parker. Because he loves him.”
Y/N: *Portals in* “Aw, isn’t that sweet. My whole family here together for a supernatural intervention.”
Mel: *Quickly grabs a potion and throws it towards Y/N.*
Y/N: *Throws fire at the potion, disintegrating it* “Nice to see you too, Mel.”

I think the reboot deserved 8 seasons, and the showrunners should have groveled on their hands and knees to get Mads back and then given us a true Power of Four

Miraculous Movie Review (Rating: 4/10)
I watched the preview of the Awakening movie yesterday and really want to share my honest review. There’s going to be several things that I’ll criticize. So be warned!
Also: Spoilers!! DON’T read it if you haven’t seen it yet. This is my personal opinion. So please stay excited for it!! 🐞🪄
Tumblr media
First of all, my overall rating for this movie is a 4/10. Just yesterday I was ready to give it a 5/10, but quickly noticed it had much more things that upset me than I initially realized when walking out of the movie.
I know it’s a pretty low rating coming from such a huge fan like myself, but that’s probably the main issue. I’m a big fan of the show, so changes in lore and characterization will be more apparent to me. For better or for worse, in this case, mostly for worse.
On the first glimpse the movie seems like a retelling - a soft reboot, if you will - of show’s origin story. The plot goes much further than that however, as it also provides a conclusion in form of a final battle with Hawkmoth as well as an identity reveal of our two main heroes.
In order to ensure the entire premise fits into a 90 minute movie, a lot of things regarding the shows lore were simplified. I say that as a neutral statement seeing as a simplification can be either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your opinion of the source material.
Personally, it left me rather unsatisfied but I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start with the good things!
One of the things I really enjoyed was the animation! Seeing miraculous with such a high production value certainly felt like a cool summer breeze. While I do prefer the original character models style wise, it was still just nice to see them in this cutesie pretty style! The locals were gagging!
Ladybug and Cat Noir were especially gorgeous!
I also really enjoyed the singing. I watched the German dub and it was very neat!
Tumblr media
Sad to say that was pretty much how long my enjoyment lasted. Everything apart from what I’ve mentioned above was… interestingly handled… to say the least. Let me elaborate.
1. The dialogue was awful!
Tumblr media
Truly not the biggest fan of musicals but I couldn’t wait for them to start singing just in order for them to STOP TALKING 😩!
The dialogue was so awkward and stiff. All of the characters were interacting very weirdly with each other. At times it would sound like several lines of dialogue were cut from the final version, as the characters barely acknowledged each other verbally. They didn’t talk with each other, but past each other.
Moreover, every second phrase was a very cheesy one liner. “Believe in yourself.”, “Listen to your heart.”, “stronger together”. Super overdone.
The movie wanted to be inspirational so bad, it forgot to be genuine.
Tumblr media
Some examples that I recall from memory:
“Mom, I don’t have any friends and I’m scared to go I school.”
“Just believe in yourself, Marinette.”
“Okay, thanks.”
Or.
“Tikki, I’m in love with Adrien.”
“Listen to your heart, Marinette.”
“My heart……Adrien.”
2. How did they manage to make Ladynoir banter … weird and uncomfortable to watch?
Tumblr media
Don’t let these pretty movie shots fool you because Movie!ladynoir spent their time in a constant roasting competition that they were somehow both losing!
Not once did they manage to establish that flirty and charming atmosphere around them. No, they were draaaagging each other through filth. And maybe it could have been somewhat fun, god knows I love couples that can roast each other. If only the dialogue was better and didn’t reek of “we have no idea how young people interact”.
In a desperate attempt to make jokes, they let Chat call LB a sidekick or watermelon in every. single. scene. To say that it got annoying when the jokes didn’t land the first 10 times they were made is an understatement. No Milady, no Bugginette, no little wink or a kiss on the hand. Only watermelon and sidekick. Them talking in weird cut off phrases. With careless whisper playing in the background.
Don’t get me wrong, there are some beautiful moments. But their beauty can only ever do so much when met with weird pacing, dialogue and characterization. I’ll talk about that last part in a minute.
3. Everything was so on-the-nose.
The characters would constantly say how they feel and what they think aloud. Jeremy didn’t trust us with even an ounce of media literacy. Classic case of always telling, never showing. Not to mention the constant inspirational quoting in a desperate attempt to convey some deep message. Is this a movie script or my moms facebook page? I guess we‘ll never know.
4. Characterization: Marinette
Tumblr media
Having Marinette be somewhat scatterbrained but overall still respected by her peers is not inspirational enough! Make her your average teenage outcast and a total loser. Dad, you’re embarrassing me in front of the cool kids!
If you enjoy that kind of characterization that’s okay! Personally, I thought it was very cliche. It just.. didn’t do anything for her as a character. Having her start off at a much „lower” point in life, with almost no support system, only makes her coming of age journey to eventually become a self accepting confident heroine take longer. Seeing as the movie is only 90 minutes, the moment we see her “shine” is when it’s all almost over.
5. Ladybug …?
Tumblr media
Did I mention Ladybug doesn’t use her lucky charm? Not. once. No crazy plans to show that she’s smart and creative. Just a pretty girl swinging around.
6. Adrien
Tumblr media
I have a bit more to criticize about the characterization of Movie!Adrien.
The longer I think about it, the more it becomes apparent that they really didn’t know how to write Adrien. His personality appears inconsistent, almost like they were trying to fit him in too many roles at once. He is either extremely closed off and mysterious (even towards his friends), a comic relief character, bathing in self pity or just outright cocky. Those hoping to see his politeness and selflessness will be disappointed. This character only is ever shown to be self centered. A perfect example is how he *didn’t do anything* to be called worthy of the Black Cat Miraculous. He was just one of the „chosen ones“. When the Adrien from the series sacrificed his own freedom to help Master Fu.
Another example is how this Adrien doesn’t really see anything in Marinette. He called her strange in their first interaction and never really lost a single thought on her throughout the rest of the series. No common praises, no support, just awkwardness and not the wholesome kind. In fact, I would argue Marinette and Adrien aren’t even friends in the movie, the only interaction to suggest otherwise was slammed as a 5 second scene in a 2 minute montage.
Even if you were to suggest their bond was formed off screen. We don’t really see it ever take root. He even turned down her gift and invitation to go to the ball with her. Yes, you guessed correctly. It was because he was busy bathing in self pity over being rejected by Ladybug. Yikes.
To sum it up, this Adrien really doesn’t care about anyone but himself. Ever. They massacred my boy.
7. Chat Noir
Tumblr media
His charming smugness as Chat Noir crossed the fine line that turned to arrogance.
Considering how Adrien was characterized, that comes as no surprise.
As mentioned in my criticism towards the dialogue and the Ladynoir dynamic, this Cat is often seen discrediting LB with unfunny jokes. The moment you see him actually appreciate Ladybug, open up to her and Woo her, it’s all overshadowed by his entitlement to her affection.
Some may argue that we see traces of such attitude in the show as well. However, in a series, Chat Noir has many redeeming qualities as well as time to grow, change and move past these flaws. And boy, move past these flaws he did. In the movie, it’s all you get. Take it or leave it.
In one scene, he even lets her think he was hurt by an Akuma in order to catch her worrying about him. It was just a short scene and most people would look past it, but I think it’s these small details that really show how these movie characters tick in comparison to the series.
8. Akumas/Hawkmoth
Just a small detail that kind of ended up taking away the enjoyment of all action scenes is how the Akumas in the movie do not have a motive. There’s just some random people that you don’t care about before their akumatization and that you won’t care about after.
Hawkmoth doesn’t make a deal with them, ask for ladybug and chat noirs miraculous in exchange for his powers, none of that.
He just makes them evil and they do evil things for shits and giggles. The movies premise doesn’t even suggest he needs the miraculous. He just needs to get close enough to Ladybug and Chat Noir to steal Tikki and Plagg.
9. The Ending
I just wanted to dip into that ending real quick. In the movie, Gabriel is redeemed when he finds out about Chat Noir being Adrien. He apologizes to him and they make up. The scene surely will make people emotional, but from my perspective it was all rather predictable.
Whether or not Gabe was worthy of a redemption in the movie is a topic to discuss on its own. Personally, I was okay with it.
What I found more interesting however was…
10. The reveal
Tumblr media
This is the moment most people have been waiting and yearning for. And I may sound a bit smug when I say that the movie served a good purpose to show us that a fast reveal would have never ever been satisfying!
It was super underwhelming because - of course it was!
Marinette and Adrien barely had a connection! For all we know they could have been total strangers and their reaction to each other’s identity wouldn’t have been any different than what we saw in the movie.
We never saw Marichat or Ladrien interact either. So that certainly lead to a less explored dynamics. Cue unsatisfying reveal.
They really tried to make it this big emotional final moment, but really? We just saw Ladybug and Chat Noir lean in for a kiss without their masks. Like in a new fit. Nothing really groundbreaking came out of it.
Any fake reveal in the show was better than that and I mean it with every fiber of my being.
And don’t even get me started on how Adrien only ever noticed Marinette when she revealed to be Ladybug. It’s just not it.
Final thoughts.
There’s sooo many more things that I could elaborate on but I think for now I’ve said enough to support my rather poor rating of the movie.
In my opinion, the movie relies too much on people enjoying the source material while trying to be its own thing. It risks leaving everyone unsatisfied.
Those who watch the movie as a stand-alone are met with weird dialogue as well as plot, characters and dynamics that aren’t at all fleshed out.
Meanwhile those who watch the movie because they like the show will be inevitably comparing the movie to its far superior source material.

WIP: NetworkMAT Add-Ons
Tumblr media
Published: 1-20-2024 | Updated: N/A SUMMARY The Network Materials (NetworkMAT) (Simmons, 2023) series includes assets for building modern road networks in Sims 2. Use these items to enhance your city’s streets, walkways, highways, skyways, bridges, and so on.
Tumblr media
It’s time to give those flat, boring streets some more flavor! Road defaults and overlays like my Streets of 2Morrow (2023) set or these – Neighborhood Reboot (CuriousB, 2012), Default Hood/Road Replacements (LordCrumps, YEAR), Ultimate Road Default Replacement V2 (Tvickiesims, 2022), Rural Charm (Criquette, 2018) – certainly add some flare. Still, I want to be able to do more elaborate streetscaping in my game. To that end, here are some previews of various networkMAT objects I hope to release in 2024. These items will require my Repo Pack (Simmons, 2023).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instead of the 1-step foundations I initially planned, I’ll be using 2-step foundations for most buildings within my city, especially downtown areas. These pieces are designed for “extending” the sidewalk and foundations (at the default 4-step height) to the edge of the lot and in other directions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Depending on how you arrange them, they should give the illusion of a gutter/sewer system below. Of course, you could also make canals, elevated roads, tunnels, train tracks, and other structures too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There will be bridges, overpasses, trains, trams, subways, pedways, and more! I’ll be moving the car/pedestrian portals around so that sims/traffic pass through the lot in various places. I've already tested having traffic pass on a road 2-stories above ground and pedestrians entering the lot from an elevator on the 4th floor - it works!

voodoo , witchcraft and the rpc
or  why you should think before including voodoo in your roleplay . ( this will contain discussions of slavery and racism , for my own comfort i will not be going into true detail of these and the other dark topics surrounded with the stereotypes )
Tumblr media
now , i would like to preface this by saying i am not a practitioner or follower of the voodoo ( vodou but for the sake of this post we'll use voodoo ) religion , however i am black ( caribbean specifically ) and after seeing an uptick of voodoo in the rpc lately , it's occurred to me that this puts me in the position to say something . so lets get into it .
witches and magic have been a staple of both the horror and supernatural genres for years and voodoo has worked its way into the entertainment industry alongside this but lets get into what vodoo actually is : a religion with its own spiritual hierarchies , ritual ceremonies, customs and practises .
a closed religion at that .
unless you are invited into it , you can not and should not practise it . it was developed by african slaves - it's entire foundation incorporates blended religions , cultures and sufferings of african slaves . it's commonly known that enslaved people were separated from their religious and spiritual identities , the only way that this knowledge and religion still exists is from being passed down from generation to generation .
'what if my muse was invited into it?' in my opinion , you as a mun who has not been invited into this religion who does not practise it , can not fully understand the weight , traditions and complexities of it . even with research , you will be missing pieces of the information .
closed religion aside , lets now talk about the stereotypes surrounding voodoo and magic .
the term black magic was often used in regards to african spirituality and in media it's not uncommon to see voodoo be used and misrepresented as something backwards , perverse and downright evil . where does this come from ? well as simple as i can make it , it's racism . voodoo and hoodoo were used to further demonise black people , it gave us the reputation that we could enslave you , that we would take away your will and autonomy and force good innocent white people into doing things they didn't want to do ( ironic isn't it ) think of media such as ahs or even princess and the frog for modern examples of how this stereotype continues .
when portraying black witches who dabble in the stereotyped portrayal of 'voodoo' , or white characters with 'voodoo' superpowers it's important to be aware of the history and of the image you will be projecting with your character .
this is not to say you can't play black characters as witches or other magical species , but you can do so in a way that doesn't enforce damaging stereotypes and tropes . ( bonnie bennet from tvd is a witch the same as her many white counterparts , the most recent reboot of charmed features black female leads as powerful witches - although both of these are not perfect depictions )
tldr : this is no where as detailed as i wanted it to be as im saving my energy and i can't tell you what to do but voodoo is a closed religion that should not be used in roleplays as a source of magic or witchcraft . please respect it and it's roots . if you want to play a black character with magic , do so the same way you would their white counterparts but be aware of stereotypes ( particularly the magical n*gro stereotype )
as always im open to questions and comments on this . my knowledge is not absolute so i'm happy to amend things in this post . keep discussions civil and polite pretty please and remember that people of colour do not owe you education , especially at their own expense so be patient and listen .

Now I'm curious, how would you adapt a modern version of Mash?
Oh man thank you for giving me pretext to ramble about this. I have too many thoughts about Cursed Hypothetical MASH Reboot.
Genre Change MASH is from the golden age of sitcom and is one of the best examples of the genre. Tragically, really good sitcoms don't get made, and the shorter lengths commissioned mean we wouldn't get space for the sillier or more experimental episodes that make MASH so charming and memorable. This is also why any remake or reimagining could never replace the original. There's also less "suspension of disbelief" with modern audiences, so I think modern MASH would have to have a more grounded setting and consistent time line, so RIP time loop. I think the modern genre that would best fit MASH is dramedy. Classico MASH already had elements of "get 'em laughing so they cry harder" and Hypothetical Remake MASH would play that up. Basically, we're gonna "Better Call Saul" this bitch.
In writing out my ideas below, I realized hitting the main plot beats I imagine makes this sound like. Depressing. Which it kind of would be! But I want to emphasize that in my mind's eye this would still tonally be a comedy right up until It Isn't. Similar to BCS, characters encounter obstacles, handle them in very funny ways, but things Keep Happening and compounding and at the end you realize all those funny things have added up to something horrific and inevitable.
General Thoughts In my beautiful mind, this is five twelve episode seasons, each corresponding to a roughly six month period- the first two seasons are 1951, climaxing with Henry's death, first episode or two of season 3 is Trapper leaving/BJ arriving and then 3/4 is 1952, and the final season is 1953 and the ceasefire. Fortunately, because the characters in MASH are pretty well fleshed out with a lot of traits I think they could be turned into dramedy characters pretty easily, and you can take the Big Things that happen to them and play them straight/expand on them into proper arcs. Also, pulling in more historical details could be really interesting, and an opportunity to unpack how Fully Evil the war in Korea was. In reading more memoirs from doctors who served in MASH units, I was struck by how much contact with international forces they had, and the surprising amount of contact with their Chinese/Korean counter-parts. I think more of both of those things would be fun to incorporate into Hypothetical Remake.
Expanded Roles for Nurses We need more women. And fortunately, we got them! Even though there is Not A Lot of existing canon, I really do think we have enough on the recurring nurses to act as seeds for fuller characters. I would love to see Kellye developed as a supporting character from the start. Struggling to articulate this, but I think a deeper perspective on anti-Asian sentiment could be explored through her, possibly with some connections to the history of colonialism in Korea in particular. The character was described as Chinese and Hawaiian, but given her credited surnames of Yamato and Nakamura getting a little into her Japanese heritage and the resentment of Koreans towards the Japanese could be interesting as well. I also think "Dish" Schneider's conflict, torn between loyalty to her husband/fiancee and her attraction to the handsome funny guy who relentlessly flirts with her, could be a source of drama. I also really like Ginger's recurring "thing" with Trapper in canon, and expanding that into an actual friendship and digging into the racism and taboos against interracial relationships of the period would be interesting. You can take Margie Cutler as a young and inexperienced nurse and give her a little coming of age arc. I would also love for Knocko McCarthy to be a foil for Margaret- as the second most senior nurse, she chafes under Margaret's command and kind of collaborates with the Swampmen to subvert her, culminating in Margaret calling her out that if she didn't side with them against her, they'd hate Knocko too, and them growing closer over the series.
Ho-Jon and Expanded Roles for Korean Characters Many have written about the shitty representation of Koreans in MASH, and Hypothetical Remake could remediate that significantly. I think giving Ho-Jon (or a similar new character) an expanded role would be good, with more ties to his family out of camp and conflict over whether or not supporting the occupying American forces and the south is the right thing to do or the expedient thing. I also think there's some dark comedy to be mined from a slightly subversive Ho-Jon taking advantage of racism and being seen as ignorant or interchangeable to get away with shit. Would love for Black Market Guy to be a recurring character. There's also a great real life story I read where a MASH surgeon formed a bond with a Chinese doctor after accidentally connecting to a PLA radio channel, and I think that could be adapted into a really fun source of comedy (bonding with "the enemy" over shared indignities, surprising similarities, etc) and ultimately drama (Hawkeye finds out about a US or ROK attack that will cripple that doctor's unit or put him in danger- does he say nothing, knowing hundreds will be injured or killed including maybe his new friend, or does he commit treason and risk prison or death to warn him- and how does he live with not knowing what happened when he has to choose inaction?) Any of the Very Special episodes could be adapted and expanded. And of course, Hypothetical Remake would have Korean writers, or consultants, or at the very least a goddamn baby name book so we don't end up with a dozen characters just named Kim, or worse random syllables.
Radar I would love to keep Radar as one of the main POV character throughout the whole series and use his unique position to bridge between different storylines- he's an enlisted man so he has that perspective, he's close with Hawkeye and the surgeons, he's assisting Henry/Potter so he has ties to command, give him a friendship with a nurse and you're set. Given the comedy-to-tragedy arc of dramadys, I would love to take the book detail that he enlisted with dreams of glory and becoming a general and lean fully into that. He starts out season 1 as a sweet naive farm kid flying by the seat of his pants to figure out his job, he gets more and more enmeshed with the military over the course of the series, currying favor with the brass to pull strings to help the unit/his friends/himself, and it ends with Potter giving him a recommendation for officer school- an outcome fully framed as a tragic loss of self to a corrupt institution.
Hawkeye I think Seasons 1 and 2 in particular could be driven by the Hawkeye and Trapper committing outrages and crimes in the name of justice/not giving a shit, and then having to spend the rest of the season engaging in more outrages and crimes to Bugs Bunny their way out of consequences. The central tragedy arcing through the series is the Destruction of Hawkeye Pierce. He starts out determined to stay himself, stick to his principles, and not let the army change him. The glimmer of hope at the end is that he has survived and gets to go home, but At What Cost. I also think making him bipolar makes the most sense- early season Hawkeye hints he's had highs and lows before, but always managed to cope, but under the increasing stress his mental health gets worse. Insomnia due to overwork triggers a manic episode (adapting Dr Pierce and Mr Hyde) about halfway through S1, with a major change in his relationship with Trapper associated with that, and his first on screen depressive episode triggered by Henry's death, which gets him his week of R&R he goes AWOL from. He holds it together through S3 with increasing amounts of self-medication for BJ's sake, and S4's overarching storyline for him is a fully Catch-22 expansion of The Late Captain Pierce with increasing levels of franticness to resolve it, and S5 is a full blown "I'M NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE HERE" crisis culminating in the equivalent of GFA, and a brief psychotic episode triggered by his mood dysregulation and moral injury. An expansion of The Late Captain Pierce would be a great source of absurdity and drama, the ultimate consequence of his alienation of Everyone In Bureaucracy or Command (they all dislike/hate him for his antics and disrespect in S1-3 and no one wants to help him in his predicament, with a few spitefully refusing to help outright), and necessary to explain his presence in Korea in 1953 since his enlistment should've ended by then (since key members of the bureaucracy Hate him they refuse to count the months he was "dead" as part of his service, and his father is in too poor of health/financially strained from his cancer scare to advocate for him successfully stateside). I also think "playing straight" all the nurses breaking up with him after Ceasefire could be interesting. Like, S1 Hawkeye is a ladies man who's saying all the right things and juggling multiple relationships, but after they realize he doesn't Capital L Love any of them they start to distance from him- not unfriendly, but less a source of support. That alienation from others, first with the nurses at the end of S1 then others in camp, causing a vicious cycle of increasingly erratic behavior leading to less support etc culminates in his breakdown towards the end of the series.
Trapper My beloved boy ♥️ who has less of an arc and more of a vibe in existing canon, so we get to make some shit up whole cloth. Either keep the book/movie canon they were friendly in college, or make them childhood friends- not close, but some kind of pre-existing relationship. First episode is them stealing a jeep and bonding as they get into Shenanigans and Danger on their way to camp. Some people have the headcanon that Trapper lost a brother in WWII because of Wayne Rogers' acting choices, and I think a backstory like that could be interesting. He starts out a little ambivalent about the war, not wanting to be there and very aware of the human costs, but also feeling he has a duty. As he and Hawkeye get into more and more Situations trying to expose war crimes or fix injustices and even basic supply issues and are met by indifference or incompetence, he gets disillusioned. After Hawkeye's manic episode, he decided the one Actually Good thing he can accomplish is keeping his friend sane until they can get back home, since he starts to increasingly see his medical work as futile and the UN intervention as hopeless/harmful. They get closer and rely on each other more and more in S2, and in my based and gay pilled vision this is explicitly romantic and sexual, albeit with serious ambiguity if they would've had this relationship outside the trauma of war. Towards the end of S2, Trapper starts to get sick, and it turns out stress and increased alcohol & tobacco use contributed to an ulcer- it almost seems like he'll be sent home, but as in Classico MASH he begins treatment at the 4077th- and then Henry dies. Hawkeye spirals and they have to send him away, and then Trapper has to help pick up the increased work load. His symptoms get worse and he tries to cope and hide it, and develops peritonitis. When he realizes he's going to be evacced to Tokyo and then back to the States, he has a bit of a fucking meltdown. Mission Failed, he can't be there for his friend, and he blames himself because it was partly caused by his alcohol abuse. This is not just me being a Trapper simp, he has to go home before his enlistment is up for plot reasons since we no longer get the benefit of fuzzy timeline, and the genre convention of dramedy is you always Reap The Whirlwind at the worst possible moment.
BJ Ironically, I don't need to change anything about BJ to turn him into a dramedy character. He already has a "negative character arc", and you just take the major beats of that, set them in a linear escalation, and tighten them up. He starts out bright eyed and idealistic, determined to keep his head up, do his duty, and get out. Hawkeye meets him at the air field, having missed Trapper. Hawkeye blames himself for Trapper's health problems, and wants to do better by the new guy, offering him support and guidance. BJ bonds with him through the craziness, but as stress increases he starts acting out in small petty stochastic pranks, and then Peg's letters and missing his family build his anger, and he lashes out at Hawkeye because he suspects (in that "he's not right but he isn't wrong either" way) that Hawkeye's friendship isn't really because of BJ himself but because BJ is Trapper's Replacement. He suspects Hawkeye and Trapper were more than friends and he's simultaneously jealous and repulsed- he wants to totally replace Trapper and for Hawkeye to like him best, but he also loves Peg and misses her terribly and resents Hawkeye for "making" him want him. His chaotic unhinged repression is funny until it's briefly terrifying, then sad. As Hawkeye's mental health deteriorates, he tries to be supportive, but is ultimately overwhelmed by the intensity of Hawkeye's crisis and pulls back, though they mend things somewhat at the end.
The Hawkeye/Trapper/BJ Nexus In summary, our core duos are codependent trainwrecks, but while TrapHawk are more of an enabling and felonious "Thelma and Louise" style folie a deux, BJ and Hawkeye are more of an epic highs and lows "if you can't be with the one you love love the one your with" "hand in unlovable hand" mess.
Margaret Don't have nearly as much to say about our girl because I suck and have been writing this for almost 2 hours now because I'm insane but she has one of the best character arcs in MASH and Hypothetical Remake would really just intentionally start laying out her conflicts and growth from episode 1. She would also have more independent story arcs of trying to manage the nurses, and navigating advancing her career in the face of sexism. I would love to see her messy and complicated relationships with powerful men explored more fully. She bonds with Frank first to have a relationship where she's more in control than with her superiors, then as an ally to push back against the TrapHawk Chaos, then as she grows more confident (and TrapHawk get in over their heads) she is able to let go of the cloak of power military pretensions give her and be more herself.
Henry and Potter Henry remains a lovable incompetent. The one headcanon I have I'd like to use in Hypothetical Remake is that he's pretty severely dyslexic- I base that off his mispronunciations and malapropisms and canonical issues with reading (in Classico MASH doing things like holding a paper upside down or not being able to read maps and the words on them). He got through med school by having his wife read his textbooks out loud and type his papers, and brute force memorization. This is part of why he over relies on Radar to manage his paperwork and is easily scammed into signing off on things- he really can't tell what he's signing unless he uses all of his focus to decipher the text, and he's a trusting person so he rarely does. @marley-manson I LOVE your take that your ideal Potter is the exact same character in the show but the narrative treats him as an antagonist, and that is the vibe Hypothetical Remake would have.
Frank and Charles Again not a lot to say here, secondary characters and minor antagonists, but they would remain big sources of commentary but their pathos would be played up more in a dramedy.
Mulcahy Again, not too much different from canon, just more intentional building of a tragic arc. A smart sensitive guy who grew up poor and thought the church would be a path to respect or maybe even greatness got told to be a math teacher by his diocese, enlisted as a chaplain when the war broke out as part of his personal quest for meaning and significance, is confronted by the horrors and damage to innocent lives but still tries to believe in a greater purpose and good to what's happening, struggles with feelings of powerlessness and futility, and when he's finally able to do something heroic loses his hearing, which costs him his vocation- he's permanently disabled and would be unable to return to his old role as a parish priest/school teacher.
Recurring Characters Sidney my beloved ♥️ We bring back Sam Pak as a returning character. Also General Hammond and other members of the brass. I think Oliver could work really well as a recurring character.
Klinger Whole bundle of thoughts on this guy I wanted to save till the end. Because I adore Klinger, he's incredibly funny and one of the kindest and most principled characters on the show, and he's also incredibly 70s and I don't think could work as he was in a 21st century dramedy. I can see three potential paths to adapting him. A) Lean into the young, brash, hustler side of his personality, and he's a straight guy who thinks the craziest thing someone could do is wear a dress. B) An explicitly gay character who refuses to admit to being gay for a discharge because he finds the idea of being judged less than or broken for his sexuality incredibly offensive, but did drag back in Toledo and also refuses to stop being himself just because he got drafted. C) Principled pacifist serving as an orderly because of the draft who refuses to wear the uniform and started wearing dresses as a protest against bullying/abuse- oh, your gonna call me a sissy and steal my clothes because I refuse to use a gun? I will not only wear a dress, I will zhuzh it up into something amazing, because I would rather wear this outfit you intend to humiliate me with than that damn uniform.

Hello, you've piqued my interest. Can we hear about Iyami's themes?
Oh man!!! I could talk about him all day! OK so! I’ll try to talk about some of the things that make his characterization so interesting to me! This is probably going to be long and all over the place so I’m going to put it under a readmore.
Tumblr media
Iyami’s name means gaudy, disagreeable and he sure is both of these things! Fujio Akatsuka reportedly based him as a character in two sources: Tony Tani, a Japanese vaudevillian who dressed in a very flashy way, spoke in a mock-fancy way and loved dropping random words in English in his speech and… in Charlie Chaplin’s Tramp character! (A character who was also based on vaudeville performers. Iyami’s an entertainer through and through!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Such a combination made Iyami a very contradictory character. He’s a fashion victim, extremely vain and overdressed in most occasions, liking to follow European fashion to a T. He speaks how he assumes is how rich, sophisticated people speak, and he even goes by his own personal pronoun: the English word me (the French word moi in the English translations of Osomatsu-kun / Osomatsu-san.)
He’s also usually living in poverty, having to resort to tricks and scams to survive. Osomatsu-kun ran according to a “Looney Tunes continuity, which is to say, the characters stay the same but the setting and their relations might change. In the vast majority of stories, though, he’s shown as a not-very-successful con man.
In the story we’re first properly introduced to him he’s an old college friend of the sextuplets’ dad, Matsuzō, and he overstays his welcome something fierce in their house, being completely clueless to the fact everyone wants him to leave. This aspect of his personality has remained consistent throughout all of his characterizations: Iyami is a character who’s awfully oblivious of and doesn’t think much of disregarding Japanese societal norms. As a result, most consider Iyami absolutely unpleasant to be around. Usually, his only friend is Chibita, a street kid he has no blood relation to who he basically raises on his own (although he doesn’t consider himself his father.) One can argue their relationship mirrors the Tramp’s relationship with the kid from the eponymous Charlie Chaplin’s film The Kid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This very extreme duality aspect of Iyami is seen in other ways sometimes: he seems to be extremely self-assured and self-absorbed but some stories suggest he’s actually deeply self-conscious, usually about his poverty and appearance (which seems to mostly revolve around his overbite). Whenever he has a chance to fully reinvent himself, he usually lunges for it. Despite his unpleasantness as well, he’s also very charismatic, being able to charm just about anyone into complying with his tricks. His overconfidence usually ruins everything before he has a chance to make a run for it with the money, though. And -the duality aspect of his that caught my attention the most- despite the harsh life he lives, Iyami is always upbeat and full of hope for the future.
Tumblr media
Here’s some “self-portraits” Iyami drew of himself once. As you can see, this guy looks nothing like him.
This charisma of his made it to the real world. Iyami’s famous pose and catchphrase, the sheeh, became a real life “meme” in the 60s which was repeated everywhere in Japan. Godzilla himself struck it in one of the movies and the Beatles were convinced to strike it when visiting Japan!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Iyami also became a breakout character in the Osomatsu-kun manga, overshadowing the main characters. Osomatsu-san, the 2015 reboot of Osomatsu-kun runs with it, making Iyami yearn for his meta fame of yesteryear and try as much as he can to “become the main character again”, which won’t happen because he’s awfully antiquated by current anime character standards.
Another thing that’s extremely interesting about Iyami in my opinion, which is also his claim to fame besides the sheeh is what I dub “the France thing”. Iyami insists he “is just returning from France” as a way to brag or protest whichever way he’s being currently treated. He repeats this so much it’s an incredibly well-known catchphrase of his, and the way he refers to France (in an inappropriately respectful way, by adding the honorific ō in front of the word) and was previously completely unheard of, is now super well known and used as a joke to this day in Japan.
While it would make sense for Iyami to just randomly claim he’s been to somewhere far away and “exotic” to sound fancy, some stories have suggested that… it’s not quite just that. It seems to be a real coping mechanism for him. Whether it’s for the hardships of his life or something else is unclear. He seems to have truly convinced himself he has been to a highly idealized France and it’s the place where he truly belongs. He even writes Japanese characters in mock cursive and tries to eat using chopsticks as western cutlery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s even a story in which his lies about France are contested by a character who has actually been there and he gets so distraught he starts speaking without his “accent” for the first and only time in the entire 30-odd year run of the manga.
One could argue his fixation on “going to France” is what keeps his optimistic and going through life despite everything. There’s nothing really supporting that, but I personally believe that, at least part of him thinks it’s a place where he’d be more accepted. Where his natural flamboyance wouldn’t be seen as unpleasant and disruptive but celebrated instead. But of course, this one’s just me, heh.

Lets talk Knights of the Zodiac:
This review will be mostly positive based on my own experience but I still will have my criticisms as I go along. To begin I want to be very transparent here and say after watching this movie: It is NOT--I repeat--NOT “Dragon Ball Evolution 2.0” like many people claim online. This movie's characters, script, dialogue, action, and story are leaps and bounds more faithful to the source material it is adapting and showing respect for it all the same. I'm positive those who keep claiming that it is have never watched the movie or are just speaking utter nonsense because let’s be real: Dragon Ball Evolution is beyond bad and KOTZ—objectively—is not.
This movie is perfectly fine; very fun I might add. It definitely stands up there with the likes of Alita: Battle Angel in terms of anime adaptations and as a movie it gets the job done.
Now for the fans going into this story expecting it to be verbatim like the original animanga, you are not going to find that here. This movie is very much an origin story for this particular universe of Saint Seiya with its own key lore and world building that takes influence from the Netflix reboot but actually executed those aspects better in comparison to how the CG show did it. I certainly appreciate this movie trying something new with its setting and story in comparison to LoS which told a very rushed rendition of the Silver Saints and Twelve Temples arc and I believe if this movie did the same thing, my expectations would be significantly lower and my criticisms far more harsher.
From an objective standpoint, this movie’s pacing definitely could use some improvement. I definitely appreciate what the writers and directors could give with the runtime they had but when it comes to character such as Nero and Seiya and Sienna’s time spent bonding, there’s definitely something to be left desired, Nero especially but we’ll get to him later. The script itself is okay, can be basic in some areas, cheesy in others but never anything that made me actually cringe. The movie’s music is otherwise really good. The orchestral Pegasus Fantasy rendition was definitely a highlight of the film for me and the music that plays through a lot of the action and somber scenes is really atmospheric.
To add, I know there were some fans that complained that not all the bronzes were here but I’m pretty sure that was for the movie’s benefit. Introducing so many characters all at once would mean that audiences would have no time to connect with them and the story would have been bloated and full of plot holes. I love how they kept the core cast as just Seiya, Nero, and Sienna for the time being to get us more familiar to their world before moving onto the others.
As for other things, the set pieces and CGI aren't terrible. It's definitely a step above most tokusatsu shows and movies but not on the level of something like Alita or some MCU movies. It's passable but definitely not a complete eye sore.
Some shots are a bit goofy but they don't linger too long and I think it adds to the charm of this being an otherwise fun action film based on an even more zany and violent anime. The fights are all well-choreographed and filmed. I saw some complaints about the lighting being dark but that's not the case here. Everything in the movie is well lit and it's obvious who's who.
I thought the armors looked pretty okay and knowing that Kurumada actually approved them looking more medieval and archaic rather than how they were in the original animanaga makes for a nice creative detail that gives this movie more uniqueness in the StS verse.
Slight spoilers here but it is confirmed and shown in the movie that the armors do in fact evolve like how they do in the original manga and anime so if this movie does get its potential sequels, I look forward to seeing how they translate that.
⚠️SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT⚠️
To move onto characters I enjoyed a majority of the main cast throughout the movie. Everyone not only understood the characters they were portraying but giving them their own charm and nuances to make them feel more like individuals.
To start with the main man Seiya, he's a lot more reserved here, because he is a lot older, but some of his attitude from the animanaga still remains like his brash attitude and his unwavering resolve to never give up. His character is quite complex with this movie going further in detail about the conflict he has with losing his sister, his obsession with finding her, and his hesitance to accept Sienna as a goddess until he witnesses it for himself. I appreciate them putting more and more time into emphasizing Seiya's relationship with his sister and Seiya at a crossroads between finding her and protecting Sienna all at once as opposed to how the anime/manga did it.
Seika is almost forgotten after the first few episodes/chapters of the original so it was nice to see that she had more of an impact on Seiya's character here.
Next, we have Sienna and I'm going to say that she is the best iteration of the Saori Kido character. While some of the pacing of her scenes were a little off at times, it didn't matter because I was engaged with what they did with her in this film. This story focuses on Sienna's humanity as opposed to the original where Saori has pretty much already accepted what she is and we never truly get to see a lot of her struggle with her heritage and most of that was relegated to the very beginning of the series. Here, Athena is the equivalent of a malevolent spirit that Sienna is constantly trying to drown out. From the way, she speaks about Athena to her parents and how that separated them feels real. She is a toung woman who’s not only caught in the middle of a broken family she cares for but is essentially a ticking time bomb. She accepts that she may not be herself one day but you can tell that deep down she doesn't want to believe that. She starts off as the typical haughty rich girl towards Seiya and while I do think that their relationship could have used a few more scenes of them getting used to each other, it still feels plausible that he cares for her I’m the end. I would be a bit of a brat too if I was going to become doomsday incarnate one day. Here she suffers loss but in turn finds a new purpose and reason to keep living. At a core it is her human side that matters most.
I also adore that Sienna starts off not in complete control of her cosmo. It gives more presence to the gods in this scenario and how dangerous their cosmo is to a regular human. It makes me really excited to see what gods late like in this universe but only time will tell.
Moving onto Alman and Guraad since they're basically two sides of the same coin. Making Alman a morally ambiguous man who is not all good fits very in line with the Mitsumasa in the original animanaga. The slow unraveling of the truth that he first and foremost only cares about his daughter is perfect and sets up the domino effect that will extend to all the children he used as a means to an end.
Guraad on the other hand is a MILLION times better than the Guraad in the Netflix reboot. Not only does she feel appropriate as an antagonist but she gives better layer to the conflict of fighting against the gods and at the same time having to come with the burden of killing her surrogate daughter to do so. Sienna and Guraad share a bond that feels genuine and when her maternal instincts shine it's wonderfully executed. It adds so much more emotionally weight knowing that a complete accident on Sienna’s end pushed away who she considered family and Guraad realizing that to makes her attempt to save Sienna feel earned.
Now we have Nero. I love Ikki in almost every universe and here it is no different. The mystery behind his character and past along with him as an antagonist is one of the best but weakest aspects of his character in this movie in my opinion. His true motives are unclear but from what a lot of people have speculated and based on Diego himself, his motivations largely have to do with Shun. Potentially Nero does not know where his brother is and I think that would make for a great parallel between Seiya and Nero if this series is to continue. He definitely has a vendetta against the gods and has the Sagittarius armor in his possession but at what ends? His character toward the end leaves more questions than answers and I wish we got a fair balance of flashbacks from his perspective to compare/contrast with Seiya’s. He is a threat through and through and the movie does well in establishing the bar that is set between him and Seiya. He's definitely a character I want to see expanded upon more in the future and what ulterior motives he has going on as it seems that Guraad was a stepping stone for things to come. I want more of him and I hope to god we do.
Marin is, dare I say, perfect. Everything from her nonchalant demeanor, to the way she trains Seiya, THE WAY SHE GOES TO SLEEP and her presence she's easily another favorite of mine in the movie next to Sienna. We get just enough of her to see what she's all about but like Nero, I hope we do see more of her. She serves the purpose she’s meant to in the story and I was quite confused about her “bound to this island by destiny” schtick (which was really an excuse to keep her out of the third arc) but overall she’s just awesome.
And last but not least Mylock. Easily he's better than Tatsumi by a country mile. The writers actually managed to make a dull asshole of a character into a fun and entertaining one. His action scenes were a highlight and were just classic king fu action that I just adore.
The story overall centers around the ideals surrounding family, humanity, and fighting through a destiny that’s not completely set in stone. It’s very anime but at the same time is personable and relatable in some way or another.
To conclude : Knights of the Zodiac is a fun film with great action, solid writing, a talented main cast of characters, and I was genuinely surprised at how much I ended up liking it. It shows respect or to the source material while doing its own thing and that’s honestly the best route it could have gone. It could have been way worse.
It’s a solid 7/10. Had some bumps in the road but it managed to make it to its destination safe and sound. Regardless of performance, I will definitely watch sequels.

Beating a Dead Crop: A Children of the Corn Retrospective
By Tabby Knight (instagram - tabby.knight6)
Artwork by Dy Dawson @xgardensinspace
Tumblr media
If you’ve seen all of the Children of the Corn films in the franchise (dear God) I’m both somewhat impressed and also vaguely concerned for your mental wellbeing. I counted a total of 12 entries in the series, including the 2020 reboot and the 1983 short film Disciples of the Crow. Not bad, considering Stephen King’s original short story clocks in at approximately 10,000 words, and ends with a degree of finality that doesn’t exactly invite a sequel.
For those unfamiliar with the source material, Children of the Corn was originally published in Penthouse Magazine in 1977 and later reprinted in King’s short story anthology, Night Shift (1978) and follows a young married couple who accidentally hit a child with their car while driving through rural Nebraska. Burt and Vicky, who are road tripping to California in a last-ditch attempt to save their marriage, decide to put the boy (dead) in the back of their car and drive to the nearest town, Gatlin, for help. The shock of hitting the boy has been abated, somewhat, by the fact that he was likely already dead when they went over him — his throat's been slit from ear to ear. They are a little disturbed, however, to find a crucifix made of corn husks in the boy’s suitcase.
They arrive in Gatlin only to find it deserted, and the only building showing any sign of recent activity is the church, which is defaced, trashed, and decorated with corn. Inside, Burt also finds a record of births and deaths, and manages to piece together the town’s dark history: some twelve years ago, all the adults in town were massacred, and the children appear to have created a corn-worshipping cult in their absence. Since then, every registered death in town has occurred on the victim’s nineteenth birthday.
By the story’s conclusion (Spoilers) Vicky’s been mutilated and crucified on a cross of corn, and Burt finds himself trapped in Gatlin’s cornfields, pursued — and ultimately consumed — by a mysterious entity that lives amongst the rows. It ends with the children, who are informed by their nine-year-old cult leader, Isaac, that He Who Walks Behind the Rows is displeased with their inability to dispatch Burt, and has lowered ‘the age of favour’ from nineteen to eighteen as a punishment. As a result, the town’s eighteen-year-old residents march into the corn to sacrifice themselves to their god. One of those dispatched, Malachi, leaves behind a pregnant girlfriend, who fantasises about setting fire to the corn in retribution. We end with a line that still sticks with me years after I first read it: “Dusk deepened into night. Around Gatlin the corn rustled and whispered secretly. It was well pleased.”
And there you have it. It’s not King’s best short story by any means, but it’s far from his worst, and it has its own grim, mystical charm that appealed to me as a teenager and still appeals to me now. The cult operating in Gatlin works primarily because of its elusiveness, and its ambiguity. We don’t see the children overthrow the town, we see very little of the entity that lurks in the corn, and there’s no flashy final showdown. There’s a tragedy to the children that fails to translate to the films, a quiet sort of helplessness emphasised by their final march into the cornrows. The conclusion feels inevitable – this is the way things are in Gatlin, and it’s horrendous, but it’s unstoppable. It just is.
To the best of my knowledge, none of the film adaptations manage to capture this same sense of quiet horror, the idea that those who commit such atrocious evil are themselves victim to a larger, far more powerful force that cannot be overthrown or disobeyed.
It’s a shame, then, that the very first film adaptation – a 1984 venture starring Linda Hamilton – dispatches this sense of ambiguity and dread entirely. Instead we are left with a standard, far less eerie narrative structure, in which Burt rescues Vicky, teams up with a couple of the less murderous children, and manages to set fire to the cornrows, ostensibly killing (at least temporarily – 5 sequels and several reboots, remember) He Who Walks Behind the Rows. Instead of the quiet despair of the short story, emphasised by the pregnant Ruth’s secret desire to see the corn burn, we get a final jump scare and a happy ending as Burt, Vicky, and the two kids they appear to have adopted set out for Seattle on foot.
There are merits to the first film, at least. John Franklin makes an iconic and genuinely menacing (if a little campy) villain out of Isaac, who outshines the elusive creature behind the rows as the primary antagonist. Courtney Gains makes for a memorable Malachai - morally grey and surprisingly likeable, far more fleshed out than his literary counterpart. The supporting cast of Gatlin kids are suitably freaky, at least until Sarah and Job are established as good kids, which diminishes the effect somewhat, especially when the short story did so well as to establish the children as equal parts good and bad, victims of a larger system as well as perpetrators of violence.
By creating a binary in which children like Sarah and Job are “all good,” while those such as Isaac and Rachel (the crazed adolescent responsible for that final scare) are “all bad,” we lose that sense of dread. Worse still, we lose the last remaining shred of realism in a film that has Burt pursued through the corn by a tunnelling monster right out of Tremors. As I said, we essentially lose the very point the source material is trying to convey.
That’s not to say it’s a wholly unlikeable film, of course, or that it’s universally hated by horror fans. Lots of people, myself included, look at the film with a great deal of fondness. But that doesn’t change the fact that it falls into that famed category of questionable Stephen King adaptations. It also doesn’t change the fact that it didn’t warrant a sequel, let alone five, and a string of ill-fated reboots with sequels of their own.
Horror movies and sequels go hand in hand, obviously, but unlike the other sequel machines of the 1980’s, the Children of the Corn franchise lacks the same fanatical following. When quizzed on franchises and their sequels, diehard horror fans tend to have very specific preferences. They have a favourite Nightmare on Elm Street, (Mine’s 3) a preferred Jason Vorhees (8-bit video game Jason, though I suspect I’m an outlier) and strong opinions on the superior Child’s Play film (It’s Bride). But with Children of the Corn, that level of diehard devotion appears to be lacking. I’ve met a lot of horror fans, and I’ve never had any of them tell me that Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror, for example, is the best of the lot.
I don’t want to generalise, of course, because I’m sure someone out there is getting ready to contact me and tell me of their undying devotion to Urban Harvest. I only mean that as a collective, horror fans are incredibly tolerant of sequels, and often can discuss the merits of part six over part ten. A cursory glance at cinema attendance for the new Halloween and Scream sequels alone indicates a market for the same formula over and over again. I would argue, however, that Children of the Corn doesn’t necessarily fit into that category. With the possible exception of 666, which promises the return of the first film’s Isaac, none of the sequels on Wikipedia’s handy-dandy list either catch my eye or spark my memory, and I can’t be the only one.
The question, then, is why keep churning them out? Let’s not forget that this isn’t just a case of a one-off direct-to-video sequel, or even a trilogy. We’re talking about five direct sequels to the 1984 film, plus three maybe sequels (Revelation, Genesis, and Runaway) and two reboots (2009 and 2020/23).* The obvious answer is of course, money, but you can’t seriously tell me all these direct-to-video sequels are churning out bucketloads of profits. They’re certainly not churning out rave reviews, either from critics or audience members.
My best guess is that, like me, people continue to be drawn to and affected by the original source material, and want to create a film in that same vein. But if that’s the case, why the continual failure to accurately adapt that same source material? Why create a narrative in which He Who Walks Behind the Rows is easily dispatched by outsiders, when the real terror of the story (at least in my opinion) stems from His unrelenting hold over the children, even in the face of their growing resentment?
The 2020 adaptation, much like those that have come before it, has received mostly negative reviews, with an 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 22/100 on Metacritic, and a staggering 1.6/5-star rating on Letterboxd. While I haven’t seen it myself (yet – if I do, it’ll bring my total number of CotC films up to…3) what I can glean from Wikipedia, Bloody Disgusting, and Letterboxd is that once again, the film fails to either accurately adapt the source material or, at the very least, capture the same spirit of terror the original story managed to convey.
In a perfect world, such universally abysmal reviews would signal a long-overdue death for the franchise, and I’d like to say I’m optimistic enough to hope for its end. But this is horror we’re talking about, and we appear to be in an age of unrelenting sequels for all genres regardless. And worst of all, there’s a backlog of twelve films whose very existence leave me pessimistic and cynical.
Incidentally, if you’d like to catch a Children of the Corn film that kind of captures the spirit of the original, consider checking out the aforementioned 1983 short film Disciples of the Crow. It’s not a perfect adaptation (Burt and Vicky still manage to escape unscathed, god damnit) but it goes a long way towards establishing that eerie sense of mindless violence and inevitability I talked about. It’s campy as hell, of course, terribly acted and not exactly scary, but it is only 18 minutes and free to watch on YouTube, and not too bad for a student film. At the very least, Burt isn’t pursued by a tunnelling monster as he attempts to set fire to a cornfield.
*In light of the pandemic, the 2020 rendition of Children of the Corn didn’t receive either mass distribution or a theatrical release until 2023. Interestingly, it was apparently the first film since the 1984 adaptation to even receive a theatrical release. Go figure.

Review: X-Men '97 - Marvel Breathes New Life into a Classic Series with Dynamic Animation and Heartfelt Care
Tumblr media
Approaching Marvel Studios Animation's X-Men '97, there's a palpable mix of excitement and apprehension among fans. This revival of the beloved X-Men The Animated Series from the '90s holds a special place in many hearts, serving as a cornerstone for numerous shows and films featuring the mutant superhero team. With the advent of the Disney+ original series, a myriad of questions accompanies its arrival.
The landscape of animation has undergone significant transformations since the '90s. One can't help but ponder: What would a contemporary animated X-Men show look like? The original X-Men: The Animated Series was a standout in superhero entertainment, boasting intricate storytelling and characters lifted straight from Marvel comics. Unfortunately, recent efforts from Marvel Studios, such as What If...?, have left much to be desired, showcasing lackluster art styles and narrative structures that embody the worst tendencies of modern superhero storytelling and animation.
Marvel Studios has repeatedly tapped into X-Men nostalgia, leveraging beloved characters like Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in various projects. Yet, despite the studio's ownership of the mutant heroes, a definitive vision for their utilization has remained elusive.
Following over two decades of X-Men films at 20th Century Fox, rebooting the franchise might seem daunting. However, with the characters now under the Marvel Cinematic Universe umbrella, there's renewed hope. The inability to reintroduce the X-Men meaningfully thus far speaks more to Hollywood's disconnect than the team's viability. Fortunately, with the inaugural 10-episode season of X-Men '97, the mutant heroes may have found their stride once more.
The recent triumph of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 highlights the enduring appeal of captivating comic book adaptations. Although X-Men '97 may not formally inhabit the MCU, it distinguishes itself with a commitment to the essence of superheroes. This series prioritizes storytelling over continuity, weaving a new narrative with delightful melodrama and nerdy charm.
One of the most intriguing aspects of X-Men '97 is its immediate continuation from the events of X-Men The Animated Series' fifth season. This seamless transition offers a nostalgic yet fresh tone, immersing viewers in a world untouched by the passage of time. It's refreshing to revisit classic character dynamics amid a backdrop of familial drama and impending threats.
The animation style of X-Men '97 strikes a delicate balance between honoring the original series' visual identity and modernizing it for contemporary audiences. The meticulous attention to detail and innovative blend of 2D and 3D animation result in stunning visuals that elevate the source material. Witnessing the iconic '90s designs reimagined with vibrant colors and dynamic flair is a treat for fans old and new.
The show's quieter moments showcase the painstaking effort poured into character design, capturing each hero's essence with precision. Additionally, action sequences dazzle with inventive use of animation, bringing each character's powers to life in visually distinct ways.
X-Men '97 reunites many of the original voice actors, infusing the series with a sense of authenticity and nostalgia. Their vibrant performances encapsulate the essence of each character, striking a perfect balance between '90s cartoon charm and thematic depth.
In conclusion, X-Men '97 embodies the timeless allure of a Saturday morning cartoon, delivering captivating storytelling and innovative animation. With each episode, it claws its way into the hearts of viewers, revitalizing a beloved franchise for a new generation.
Scheduled for release on March 20, 2024, 'X-Men '97' is the brainchild of creator Beau DeMayo, drawing inspiration from the iconic X-Men comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Beau DeMayo, the series boasts a stellar voice cast including Ray Chase, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, JP Karliak, Lenore Zann, George Buza, AJ LoCascio, Holly Chou, Isaac Robinson-Smith, Matthew Waterson, and Adrian Hough. Setting the tone with theme music by Haim Saban & Shuki Levy and compositions by The Newton Brothers, 'X-Men '97' is a production of Marvel Studios Animation, promising viewers an exciting journey across its 10 episodes.
Catch new episodes of X-Men '97 every Wednesday on Disney+!

I wish I wasn't hyperfixated on this webcomic and several of the characters in it. I kinda hate myself for it. Do you have any tips or tricks to alleviate the brainrot? It's rather conflicting for me.
You shouldn't hate yourself for it anon! it's perfectly understandable that the comic and characters mean so much to you, it's meant a lot to many different people since its inception since for many it was one of the first queer positive comics they found and the characters were charming and well designed at times (especially the ones not designed by glip, like red Beleth). There are a non-insignificant amount of current-day floraverse fans that despise Glip and their actions but continue to dote on the characters they fell in love with. As an example, we found this just yesterday. There have also been multiple attempts to rewrite Floraverse or 'reboot' it without Glip's involvement. This wouldn't happen if there weren't some things to like about it!
I do understand your trepidation with publicly enjoying the comic and the characters though, especially since the comic and its related art have been the cult's major source for attracting new members and the last thing anyone wants is for their favorite media to become the gateway for someone else getting suckered in and being abused as a result, I know something like that would eat at me.
You don't have to punish yourself for liking something that a horrible person made, you can even steal the characters and draw them doing whatever you want if you so choose!
Glip is known to use peoples Flora's oc's without their consent in their work because of the creative commons attribution share alike 4.0 license that Floraverse as a whole is under, but the thing about this copyright license is that it works in both ways, just like how Glip can use anyones Flora ocs for any purpose under the name, you can do the same for any of Glips ocs, so long as Glip is credited in some way.
The only thing I would recommend is to make it clear that you do not support the mainline Floraverse canon + the people behind it, with some mention as to why. Not just because of the inherent danger present but also......because the aspects of Floraverse that people fell in love with really died off after 2018.
This is a bit of a tangent but, all the characters most non-cult fanartists draw are before that era for a reason. Floraverse as a comic is just, not what people like anymore. While the community always had cult-like tendencies, a lot of the more brazen practices that make the group a cult (specifically, scenes) started to occur after the Big Fluff / Marl logs leaked in 2018. I suspect that Glip realized that they can't rely on their art alone anymore to control people because their reputation rightfully took a nosedrive from the Big Fluff logs. So they started these practices like scenes to have more assurance that those that did stick around, would stick around for longer. This manifests itself in making the barrier for entry for current day Flora really high - in Eastar you can't even get full basic access to the server if you do not put the time in to make a proper Floraverse OC.
Tumblr media
Combine this with the fact that in order to gain access to a lot of community channels you have to actually partake in the lengthy roleplay, it leaves people with a massive sense of sunk cost fallacy if they want to leave.
I bring this up because the comic itself has had to change to accommodate this push to establish a sunk-cost fallacy with fans. The content shifted to focusing on the roleplays people have in the discord server, and visually the comic took a nose dive as Glip changed art directions to fit the new tone. The comic was difficult to follow pre-2018, but nowadays it's not only nearly impossible to follow without the context of these fan ocs, or the community drama or discord roleplays.
Essentially after the BF logs Floraverse became a low-effort vent repository where Glip yells about whatever discord target they feel is acceptable (such as what happened to @hexcryingwolf) or weird personal sexually charged feelings (such as Routine Maintenance where w0z fantasizes about it sexually violating Rina based on Rina's history of being sexually violated in the exact way depicted and W0z's history of sexually violating others in a similar way depicted.)
Current day Floraverse is just, a really hard sell to new potential fans. There's a reason the servers only see like, 1 or 2 people join per week.
You could also just try to broaden your horizons. Just sit down one day, visit a site like hiveworks, find a webcomic that interests you and binge it. Hard to hyper-fixate on the furry cult comic if you're hyper-fixating on a different comic.

I had this discussion with my friend regarding the sentimonster status of Adrien and while the ambassador said that it's canon, the scene in Mirsculer episode stood out the most with us because it seems to be proving otherwise.
Case of point : Sentimonster will goes berserk upon making a contact with Cataclysm, Adrien didn't.
The answer that I get when I I asked around about it prior to s5 is that :
The Cataclysm is a fake and it didn't have the same power as Chat Noir.
The suit protect him.
I once saw Astruc tweeted regarding the first answer : No, the cataclysm isn't fake. It had the same power and strength as Chat Noir's and the second point is proved to be wrong or not 100% true either considering Monarch got the damage from the cataclysm and it slowly killing him.
In fact, Adrien's reaction and his comment about his fractured (broken?) Ribs in that episode is basically the same as what happened with Gabriel in s5.
We're just confused because at one point the show seemed to give up proof that Adrien isn't a sentimonster while other moment the fandom seemed to give us proof that he is.
I'm asking because you're one of the rare blog that seems neutral enough in discussion so I hope you won't mind if I ask if those hints that I keep seeing about Adrien is sentimonster in concrete enough as evidence that he is or it could be read as ambiguous hint?
I'm sorry if you had similar question before.
Ok, but mind you, I haven't watch past Transmission as I want to follow this season in order as much as I can. So if I am missing elements that come later this season, this is normal and I ask people who would want to reply to this to NOT SPOIL ME.
And just to make it clear for those who don't know me, my stance about the SentiAdrien-theory is the following : I may not overall like it because of some elements, but after Ephemeral, I have accepted SentiAdrien is implied enough to be real despite no official verbal confirmation in canon so far. In other words, to me, SentiAdrien is present in the subtext, but I don't like some implications related to it that comes from my own interpretation as viewer of the source material.
Anyway, let's re-establish some facts first. We know that Cataclysm causes something "bad" to happen to whatever it touches depending on its nature.
Against most superpowers, Cataclysm neutralizes them. It can even destroyed an alternate plane dimension like we have seen in Pixelator.
For an object or machine, it will make it malfunction, break or rust to the point it can turned to dust. Uncanny Valley, for example, is a android who after taking a Cataclysm on herself stop functionning and the Lucky Charm was used to reboot her.
For living beings, Cataclysm effect are transposed. Bones will fracture / break or tissues will decay. Those are the two known and observed effects in canon. And just like an object can be completely destroyed because it is too much degraded, Cataclysm can potential kill a living being if the damages are unstainable for the body to function either instantly (see the Akuma in Chat Blanc -- which is a real butterfly at its core -- which is the closest we got of that) or on the long term (Monarch).
In the case of Sentis, the magic link with the Amok is severed, making them uncontrollable. And yes, the first modus operandi with all Senti created for battle so far by the Bad Guys is to go berserk as a result. Also, despite them cracked mark they get after tanking a Cataclysm as if they were objects, Sentis are ultimately living beings even if they more or less look like it and no matter if they are intended as a weapon or not. They are not artificial intelligent beings like Uncanny Valley.
Those are the facts.
Another thing we tend to forget, but Chat Blanc did Cataclysm himself during the alternate timeline. Instead of attacking either Hawkmoth or Ladybug, he turned his attack on him... before losing control of his powers. Months passed and despite this, physically, he looks fine. Which can make one wonder... if Monarch's body is progressively rotting after taking a Catasclym and Chat Noir's ribs were fractured until he was healed, what was Chat Blanc Cataclysm effect on him? Could it have been something else than physical? Of course, his unstable mental state later during his fight with Ladybug is mostly due to the trauma he has lived and the months of his solitude in this post-apocalyptic world he has caused. There is no way someone would remain sane of mind under the same context. But there is the possibility Cataslym contributed to that unstability as well. However, there is no way to fully determine it because it is not visible.
Now, time for my theory. I suspect how the Senti was created plays a role there. All Sentis are created from one emotion in the first place. And the Creator can shape and program the Senti however they want during creation. They can make them look a certain way, have skills or powers the creator has predetermined. The Sentis meant to battle against Ladybug and Chat Noir are most probably made to tank a Cataclysm. But while Cataclym can't physically harm a Senti created to be a living weapon, the only thing that remain with which it can mess under these circumstances is the Peacock magic itself.
So what if we and the heores are actually misunderstanding the Berserk effect? What if the Senti going berserk is merely the result of them being confused, scared or having their core emotion overtaking them because Cataclysm actually messed with their emotional regulation? In most cases, the Senti is created out of a negative emotion such as anger, thus why they tend to be mostly destructive.
And if so, it begs the following question : if the Senti was never created with the intention for them to be used in a magic battle and defend against superpowers, to just be and pass as a normal living being, would them being hit by Cataclysm actually have similar consequences to what actually happens with other normal living being as a possible effect? Making the body malfunction in some way instead? Of course, that doesn't mean those Senti are immune to become berserk. Just that Cataclysm has more options to hazardly choose from.
Anyway, food for thought.
Also, adding this because I expect this counter-argument to pop out, but in the context of SentiAdrien, the reason why Chat Blanc didn't vanished despite the Twin Rings probably being turn to dust judging by the state of all Paris citizen in that alternate timeline including Hawkmoth, is probably due to the fact the Twin Ring wasn't in one piece when they were destroyed. Just like the record disk in Crocoduel. Breaking the parts separately doesn't release the Akuma in this context. The object needs to be broken as one for it to happen. And Akuma and Amok work roughly the same, so there you have it.

( scott speedman, cisman, he / him ) — 🎬 just announced, mason townsend has been cast as clay morrow in the upcoming sons of anarchy reboot. the forty six year old is trending as people are debating if the trying to find amends in the bottom of a bottle, losing the star shine in a sea of forgotten faces, a deeply rooted passion that begs to take flight, braving new worlds long cast aside, worn flannel and designer denim and a smile that can charm that they are known for is enough to make them as good as original. a quick google search shows that their fans call them outgoing, but internet trolls think they’re more obsessive. i guess their newest interview for variety where they talk about their shocking return to acting after his indefinite hiatus will let people to know them better.

credits: that 70s show (michael kelso), in the land of women (carter webb), and a few indie thriller flops no one remembers.
backstory:
tw: drinking, alcoholism, addiction
it was a cookie-cutter, white-picket fence life for middle-class mason towndsend, growing up in a close-knit community in connecticut, close enough to nyc that he felt connected to the world. he wasn't left to want for much, though due to being the middle sibling, mason was most frequently left to his own devices && sources of entertainment.
this entailed a lot ruckus, and he was an athletic, happy-going child with a flare for the dramatics. he was well-liked, and extremely popular throughout highschool, and preferred to be surrounded by people. it was evident, very quickly, he was girl crazy, and had a handful of girlfriends throughout his high school years.
after graduating (barely making it to the ceremony, having been out partying the night before and barely passing with a low grade average), mason jetted off to california, and started sleeping on couches && scamming cash when he could to pursue a dream of acting.
it took some work, but in only two whirlwind years, mason had landed his break-out role as michael kelso in that 70s show at just twenty years old. while this was a genuine dream come true, and mason was over the moon to "stick it to his family", who had always doubted him (especially good old pops), in the end, it was never his acting role that changed his life thanks to the show.
it was rose, his co-star who played jackie. as the show progressed, and they grew closer, mason fell head over heels in love with her, moreso than his long, complicated, overlapping string of girlfriends && flings before. for him, there was only rose.
then he starred in a rom-com, gaining more traction in his fame as a hollywood heartthrob. there were parties, there were interviews... then things slowed. no one sent scripts, or if they did, they cast other actors. fights with rose started, whose trajectory went only upwards. she shone, and he continued to dull in the spotlight.
he turned to drinking, and within years, a couple of failed thrilled indie films that were massive flops (if they even made it to box office) and his agent quit, claiming his career as dead.
mason went overboard, and things with rose disintegrated, as he found himself more and more miserable out of the spotlight. things soured worse with his family, friends abandoned him, and mason avoided press like the plague, eventually falling out of sight... and out of mind.
his life was a dark time for awhile. rose continued to glow, so he stopped watching tv. there were a couple of health scares, and eventually, mason couldn't recognize the man he was in the mirror anymore. when he made the decision to hire an agent, in the middle of the nostalgic revolution, watching all these other formerly silent stars come back... he felt hope again, for the first time ever, but he'd changed. mason was no longer going to be recieved as michael kelso, as he once had been. but his new agent promised this was a GOOD thing, and now, mason could be anyone.
he chose to be rose's on-screen husband, clawing his way to get there, going as far as to lie, cheat, and sabotage the competition, and snatching the role after it was officially cast as someone else. now, he's made it back to the spotlight, and he's got big plans on what to do with it.
wanted connections:
cast mates: self-explanatory! some may be bothered or suspicious how he got the role, or have been fans of that 70s show in the past and remember him?
former friends in the industry: anyone he knew before going dark && disappearing for years! so like, probably 2012/2013 was the last major contact together.
someone he slept with/casually dated during his indefinite hiatus: he'd have them sworn to secrecy by now, and probably avoids them/is embarrassed now, to have them know what he was like at his lowest. he wants to rebrand and rebuild - this will be awkward.
any other "burnout" stars returning: anyone who will accept/understand/support/encourage mason, or especially those who will relate to his struggles with drinking, failure, etc.
"sobriety" buddies: even tho mason will break his a few times...
taken connections:
his ex: rose, co-star on soa, and love of his life.

Here's J0nny's updated refsheet, ft. The Murdy Gurdy! After the Bar Incident, he starts really considering who he is outside of his namesake, and changes his look a bit. He also carries around the gear he pulled out in the fight and keeps it like a fucked up good luck charm. I'm actually making his denim jacket irl because its dope. More about J0nny below!
Post-reboot J0nny's really about self discovery, finding out what and who he is outside of his prescribed identity. Finding what parts he wants to keep and what he's going to discard and grow from. He also cries under the skin. It'll well up in the corner of his eyes, then just sink below it, making his "makeup" run. He's also got blue insides! His blood is the right color, but oily almost.
His eyes are synthetic and mostly mechanical, and light up/glow when hes excited. He's got a mechanical heart obviously, trying to imitate Jonny-real's mechanism, but its rudimentary at best and isn't the source of his immortality. He has chunks of metal machinery embedded in his brain that shorted out during his reboot, slowing his thoughts down and letting him think around his in-coded Jonny d'Ville identity.
His real "mechanism", if you can call it that, is his vocal chords. They're made of tape recorder ribbons contained in a magnet-proof case in his throat. These tape ribbons contain recording fragments of Mechanisms shows- specifically, Jonny's parts in those shows. His creator (who he immediately killed when he was let out of his grow-tube) survived a show and got weirdly obsessed with the idea of traveling around with the Mechanisms and being buddies with them. His "mechanism" makes it so that he sounds almost just like Jonny-proper, aside from crackling noises and occasional popping, which get much worse after the reboot and as time goes on. Eventually, the tapes probably will sound so worn and warped that he wouldn't be recognizable by voice, but that's for another day. Mostly, he sounds just a little electronic, just slightly.
J0nny's creator also planned on creating mock-ups of all the Mechanisms, but Jonny was really his focus- J0nny was just the very first prototype and an unfinished specimen. He was going to be killed after he ran a few tests, but J0nny killed him before he could even start, and took off.
Due to his coding that ran in the machinery in his brain, he was compelled to tell stories in song, perform shittier versions of all their albums, and collect his own "crew"- This comes in the form of random quasi-immortals he finds through his travels, most of who leave in relatively short time. The exception would be @crocutaclan 's OC BBot, or Bee for short, who becomes J0nny's consistent right hand man. Bee is actually the one who reboot's J0nny after he attempts to self terminate after the bar fight incident, and the act of rebooting him fries something in the circuits that lets him think around the prescribed identity and grow.
J0nny also has trouble differentiating between organic and non-organic beings. Because of his place in-between, the difference is really blurry to him. He insisted for millennia that Bee was "just an organic guy with weird meat!" before he eventually relented after the reboot.
He can play harmonica shittily, but is really good on the Hurdy Gurdy. He found his in a space goodwill and customized it with paint and a knife on the crank. It's his most prized possession. He's also much more skilled with a knife than a gun, but he does carry both. His go-to knife is chipped on one tooth from the bar fight.
J0nny is really attached to beings he considers his crew, and would do anything for them. That being said, he also would torment them if he thinks it would be a good bit. J0nny also is a criminal, and loves killing, generally. He's got the same moral hard-limits as Jonny-proper, plus a few more because I don't like writing child torment lol.
I wanna make it clear that J0nny isn't Jonny- that's the whole point. I've had some issues with that in the past, people assuming that he's just "Jonny but better/worse lol" but he's his own guy. That's his whole character arc, realizing who and what he is and what that means. I've put a lot of my own heart into his guy and he means the world to me. Please be kind.
Also his tongue is blue! <3

God, The Cuphead Show is just something so beautiful in this world of reboots and remakes and nostalgia capitalism, a show comes along that utilizes the style of early black and white animation and that specific mastery of slapstick humor infusing an entire show with so much Steamboat Willie, Popeye, Betty Boop classic cartoon energy, but completely modernized animation with an original IP instead of legacy characters, mixing with those classic slapstick animated gags and the humor and the word play that permeated the genre, but not in a disingenuous way that feels at odds with our modern world instead flowing seamlessly into the new animation style while still keeping the charm and heart of the OG style pioneered decades before this show, I want to wax poetic about the technical mastery of this writing and animating team who truly understood the assignment when they made this cartoon, because it does not get enough credit for being an absolute masterpiece that shows the absolute best of what nostalgia properties could possibly be, paying respect and homage giving immense amounts of love to the originals who paved the way for them to be able to build something on such a steady foundation while still being able to tell a new and original story that takes it's own risks and makes unique choices happy to stand out as an original IP while still utilizing the nostalgia inherent in this style of cartoon in a way that feels like the artists really truly love the sources of their inspiration and don't resent them or aren't just trying to clone them to hopefully achieve a monetary result, it feels like a work of art that a team of artists labored lovingly to create and I can't get over it's brilliance, because it truly is a masterpiece in this modern age of mediocrity

The Royal Romp in the Great White North: Hockey High Fashion and Hidden Agendas by u/Oakthrees
** “The Royal Romp in the Great White North: Hockey, High Fashion, and Hidden Agendas”** In this satirical take, the recent activities of Harry and Meghan are exaggerated and humorously twisted, presenting a lighthearted and fictional interpretation of their public appearances and the media’s fascination with their lives."Photobombing Royalty": When Meghan and Harry posed with a young fan, the internet almost broke. "They're mingling with the commoners! Alert the press!" shouted a Twitter user. “Look, they’re just like us, but royal and better looking,” exclaimed one Instagram user. Another added, “Is Harry holding a maple syrup latte? So Canadian!” Conspiracy theories abound – was this a clever ploy to win over the Canadians, or just an audition for their upcoming travel vlog, "Royal Road Trips"?"Hockey Night in Sussex": At the Canucks game, Harry and Meghan put on a performance worthy of an Oscar. Harry and Meghan were the ultimate fan couple, cheering, hugging, and jumping for every goal. Harry, mistaking the hockey puck for a rare artifact, performed a everlasting ceremonial drop that left onlookers bewildered. “Is he channeling his inner Gretzky, or is this just an elaborate ruse to meet the Stanley Cup?” mused a sports commentator. Their passionate celebration had fans wondering if Harry was auditioning for a spot on the Canucks, or perhaps just really excited about the halftime snacks."Meghan's Masterclass in Chic Activism": At the Justice For Girls charity, Meghan’s all-white ensemble stole the show. “Is she campaigning for justice, or auditioning for a spot in Vogue's next issue?” pondered a style critic. Her discussion on teen struggles left many wondering if her next project is a documentary titled, “Duchess Diaries: The Struggle for Justice,” or perhaps a line of activist-themed jewelry."The Sussex Power Play": The body language expert's commentary about Harry and Meghan's relationship dynamics had social media in a frenzy. “Has Harry been taking secret leadership lessons, or is this just the result of binge-watching Canadian sitcoms?” joked a user. Rumor has it that Harry’s recent displays of confidence might be due to secret night classes at ‘Duke Charm School.’ Whispers in the corridors speak of Meghan orchestrating a Pygmalion-style makeover. Could it be that the ‘spare’ is sparing no effort to become the ‘heir’ of charisma? Tabloids speculate wildly – is this the birth of Harry Houdini, the escape artist from royal shadows? Is Meghan feeling overshadowed by Harry’s newfound charisma, or is she secretly coaching him for his debut in motivational speaking? “Watch out, world, Harry’s coming with his own TED Talk: ‘How to be a Prince in the Modern World’,” tweeted a royal watcher."The Great Canadian Caper": As the Sussexes navigate the streets of Vancouver, rumors swirl. Are they scouting for a new palace, or just enjoying the local cuisine? “I heard they’re opening a chain of poutine restaurants,” whispered a dubious source. And with every public appearance, the couple seems to be sending coded messages – is it a sign of their next big move, or just Harry’s newfound love for maple syrup?“Meghan’s Solo Star Turn”: Meghan, sans Harry, ( Was this a strategic play for independence or just a break from royal diaper duty?) dazzled at a Hollywood bash, sparking rumors of her launching a solo career. Is she auditioning for a new reality show, ‘The Real Housewives of Windsor’? Or perhaps planning a one-woman off-Broadway show, ‘Diary of a Duchess’? Insiders speculate if she was auditioning for a new role – perhaps a reboot of ‘The Princess Diaries’ with a royal twist? Or maybe scouting for a director for her upcoming biopic, “The Real Crown: My Life as a Duchess.” Hollywood insiders are already predicting a claw for an Oscar. post link: https://ift.tt/le2WJcQ author: Oakthrees submitted: November 24, 2023 at 09:15AM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit
