Sonic Does NOT Trust Eggman!!
One of my little pet peeves from Sonic’s characterization in the IDW comics is how Sonic is characterized as “too nice for his own good.”
Sonic in that series takes one look at Mr. Tinker and decides that he can trust this Eggman. He defends his choice from Shadow, and is shown to be relieved that Eggman has finally “gone good”.
Thing is? Sonic would never trust any version of Eggman like that so easily.
Sonic has been fighting Eggman for years. He knows that Eggman is never going to give up on his goal of conquering the world (especially not after how many times he’s bounced back from a defeat!)
Whenever Eggman in the games (and Sonic X) is shown to potentially have “gone good”, Sonic, above any other character, is shown to trust the Doctor the least.
(the “Well, that’s a relief!” is spoken in a sarcastic tone)
In Sonic Colors, on their way up to Eggman’s Interstellar Amusement Park, Sonic sarcastically mocks Eggman’s totally legit sense of remorse for his past actions. He doesn’t believe Eggman would ever truly be redeemed, and certainly not out of his own volition. And he’s right, Eggman is using this theme park as a way to harvest massive amounts of energy from the wisps.
Interesting to note here is how Tails questions whether or not Eggman truly is up to no good. The park seems harmless, after all. Sonic immedietly refutes this, but the fact that Tails expressed doubt still stands. There’s a pattern of the people around Sonic, such as Tails or Amy, believing that Eggman might have changed, even if Sonic himself never does.
And of course, Knuckles is the worst with believing in Eggman’s tricks.
Good ol’ Knuckles. You’ll get it eventually buddy I believe in you 😩
The DS version expands upon that scene. Sonic directly states that he doesn’t trust any park with Eggman’s name.
Sonic expresses extreme distrust for Eggman, sarcastically remarking about how “Eggman’s just the type to build a place where people can have fun.” /s
He doesn’t even believe for a second that nothing suspicious could be laying around! While Tails starts to doubt if Eggman has a scheme going on, Sonic from start to finish doesn’t ever believe that Eggman is capable of creating something just so that others can have fun.
WOW! Secret Rings is a great example here of game Sonic’s canonical reaction to seeing a “good” version of Eggman. When Sonic first meets King Shahryar, he goes into full distrust mode, accusing him of being the one behind Erazor’s scheme!
“So you’re the one behind all of this! Eggman, what are you planning this time?”
It isn’t until Shahra defends the King and tells Sonic “that isn’t Eggman!” that Sonic backs down and tolerates King Shahryar’s existence.
Why tolerate only, you may ask?
Because later on within the story, Sonic saves the King in a very... unique manner. With a disrespectful attitude, eyes looking off to the side, and arms crossed, Sonic saves the King from falling, but only with his foot. He is NOT happy about saving someone that looks so much like Eggman, even if this person technically isn’t him!
Unlike IDW where Sonic is overjoyed that Mr. Tinker is a good person now, game Sonic is miffed that King Shahryar exists, and even after finding out that he’s really not Eggman, still only begrudgingly saves him.
[SPOILERS FOR SONIC X SEASON 2]
In the Egg Moon Arc in Sonic X, Eggman rebuilds the destroyed moon, claiming that after the events of SA2 and Gerald, he feels remorse for his actions.
However later, when Eggman’s moon goes out of control and blocks the sun, Eggman starts selling faux mini suns to replace the sun that went missing. Finding out about this info, Sonic silently walks out of the room, and later goes on to destroy the mirror towers that power the mini suns.
Tails and Amy explain Sonic’s mindset in this scene. Just because Eggman has done a good deed, and has made peace after SA2, doesn’t mean Sonic is happy with it. Here, Sonic can’t even accept the idea that Eggman would ever become good, and once more merely tolerates the Eggman that made peace with the Earth.
If Eggman were to ever truly “become good” (which just isn’t something his character would ever choose, lets be real, but we can pretend he lost his memory and became Tinker or something), I don’t think Sonic could ever forgive Eggman. Not after all the awful things he’s done that Sonic has witnessed and foiled first hand.
He’d tolerate it, but wouldn’t be relieved. He’d be annoyed. Eggman gets on his nerves, and their eternal rivalry and bad blood would make forgiving and forgetting nigh impossible.
Their relationship is more complicated than that.
Sonic doesn’t trust anything the Doctor’s got going on, and honestly, why should he? After battling through dozens of his evil schemes, Sonic knows that Eggman is notorious for tricking people, manipulating them, and outright lying to get what he wants. Empathy to the Doctor is simply a tool he uses to convince others that “I’ve really changed this time, promise!”
Knuckles isn’t the only one that’s fallen for Eggman’s previous few “changes of heart,” after all. Sonic knows better than to trust the Doctor’s words.
