Warnings: Theo is called a spaghetti whore?, Cormac sucks, reader gets called a bitch, you’re friends with Pansy and she knows a lot of girls, Mattheo mentions sex, Cheating on Cormac’s side and then kinda cheating with reader bc theyre like flirtyish with Mattheo but its fineeeeeee, honestly Cormac’s kinda abusive, it gets kinda extra fanficy at the end but just consider it camp, reader punches Cormac :0, i think that’s it tbh

Your relationship with Cormac McLaggen had started as any relationship in Hogwarts did, a trip to Hogsmeade. You thought he was cute and he seemed sweet enough. So you continued to date him, much to your friends dismay. Draco complained about McLaggen's house. Blaise pointed out his habit of making obscene sexual comments to just about every girl who would breathe near him. Theo explained the time that he ran into McLaggen and Cormac called him a "spaghetti whore." Theo had a few choice words about Cormac, getting so heated he slipped entirely into Italian. You only picked up on a few words you remembered him teaching you in third year, none of which you would translate out loud. Pansy mentioned how he "sucked ass" at Quidditch. Lorenzo told you the filthiest rumors you've ever heard and truly wondered where he heard them. You were a little upset that all your friends disapproved of your new boyfriend. Mattheo had stayed silent the second Cormac's name slipped off your tongue. You turned to him, staring at him. Mattheo clicked his tongue. You didn't need him to say anything, rolling your eyes. You stood up, leaving the Slytherin common room all together.

After that your relationship was a touchy subject in your friend group. Often you'd all just ignore it entirely. When Cormac would interrupt, which was more frequent than you liked, everyone would fall silent and glare at him as he tugged you out of your seat. Though sometimes they would bring it up with you, every one of them always had some bad words to say about your boyfriend. Everyone, except Mattheo. He never spoke about it. Though that didn't mean Mattheo's point wasn't known. Often if Cormac's face was shown or even mentioned, all of a sudden Mattheo went silent. He was clenching his jaw, rolling his eyes, and clicking his tongue every two minutes. If he wasn't showing his hatred physically, Lorenzo or Theo would be reporting back to you. Theo always told you all the distasteful names Mattheo called Cormac. Lorenzo always told you the different ways Mattheo planned on torturing your boyfriend. No matter what he told the boys, Mattheo never said anything to you.

Until now.

You had planned on spending the weekend with your friends, whether that meant a sleepover, almost sacrificing Draco, or teaching Theo how to play charades. You thought it would be fine by Cormac because he never asked you out or made plans with you. You had a spectacular time with them. Just one hour with your friends and you were already feeling the stresses of your school week wash away. All of you laying in the courtyard grass as Draco ranted about his god awful experiences this week. Theo popping in his opinion every few minutes but the group was still filled with laughs and giggles. You were sat at the bottom of the tree you were all scattered around. It was peaceful and happy until you heard someone stopping towards you, the shuffling of a bulky Quidditch uniform. You peered around the tree to see Cormac storming towards you. Your friends noticed your sudden stiffness, looking to the source of the noise. You heard most of them groan.

"Not this bitch again." Blaise muttered.

"Stronzo" Theo whispered under his breath.

"I have got to get my father to hire an assassin." You rolled your eyes at Draco. You heard the muttering of Cormac approaching closer to you. He finally reached you, tapping you roughly on your shoulder. You looked up at him and smiled.

"Why hello, lovely boyfriend. Whatever can I do for you?" You wished your friends had chuckled or laughed but they all winced.

"Save it." Cormac grunted, pulling you up by your forearm. You quickly grabbed the strap to your bag, hauling it over your shoulder. Cormac noticed his glaring crowd of Slytherins. He leaned into your ear before angrily whispering to you.

"What happened to watching your Lovely boyfriend at Quidditch practice? Hm? 'Stead of watching me you're over here dicking around with your freak friends."

"Don't call them freaks."

"Shut up, do not interrupt me when I'm talking. You know my family has a saying? If a bitch doesn't know their place, beat them into it-" Cormac's grip on your arm tightened. You glanced down at his knuckles whitening.

"That's enough out of you Cormac." You looked up at Mattheo. This was truly the first time he said something disapproving of Cormac in front of you. Cormac rolled his eyes, tugging on your arm for you to follow him.

"Release their arm, you incomplete little dickhead." Pansy said, standing up next to Mattheo. You glanced around as all of your friends began to stand up. You suddenly felt like you were watching a children's movie and they were all going to break into song and dance. You wrenched your arm out of Cormac's grasp, stomping off to the Quidditch pitch. Cormac chasing after you and chiding you. You watched Cormac's practice, you cheered, and you ignored your friends for two days straight.

When you did return to them they didn't mention your boyfriend but they kept reminding you of how they supported you. Draco told you he'd hire a very good assassin for you if you gave him the word. No one mentioned Cormac's name but all of a sudden your friends were mentioning their deadliness. You told them you could handle yourself. You didn't need your friends to fight your battles. Sure Cormac said some odd things but it had been a particularly bad day for him. He treated you greatly but he just had a rough time and mishandled it that day. Pansy told you on your next birthday she was gifting you with Cormac's skull. Through all of their planned homicides, Mattheo stayed quiet.

At first you appreciated his silence because at least he wasn't telling you how he'd brutally murder your boyfriend. Now you were annoyed. You used to talk to him all the time, spending all your free time with him. Now Mattheo couldn't even look you in your eye when Cormac was mentioned. With more of Cormac’s appearances, the less Mattheo talked to you. Not only was he neglecting your friendship now he was neglecting to speak to you. You were starting to wish he'd tell you all the ways he'd decapatate Cormac just so he'd talk to you. So you hung out with your friends less. Their constant gorey talk and Mattheo's silence just made it difficult for you to sit through a conversation with them.

It'd been weeks since you last talked to them. You missed them but you had a feeling if you returned they'd make a stink about it. You saw them in the halls while Comarc walked you to wherever he wanted. Mattheo always grimaced at Cormac's hand on the back of your neck, dodging your eyes. Cormac seemed to trip suddenly when Pansy reached into her pocket. So you avoided them like the plague.

Weeks later, You placed your books back where you found them, humming to yourself. You had spent the whole day in the library. You sat in the window nook. Your stacks of read books growing taller around you. You didn't fully finish most of them but you skimmed them and that was enough for you. It felt nice to be alone and peaceful. No Cormac. No Mattheo. No drama. No Quidditch practice. No "oh come watch me arm wrestle Fred Weasley I'm going to beat him." And then lose nonsense. Just you, a peaceful room, and a good couple hundred of books.

"Hey baby, come here often?" And in comes Mattheo. You glanced behind yourself. He was leaning against a bookshelf, looking through the titles of your books.

"Oooh sorry handsome, I have a boyfriend. Awe." He smiled at you, happy to have you joking back with him. Mattheo rolled his eyes at you, remembering that you mentioned Cormac.

"Fuck your boyfriend. He's a bitch. You can do better." You sighed picking up more off your floating stack of books. You did not respond. Mattheo followed after you, taking a few books off the top himself.

"You know how at store if you buy something you can return it and swap it out for a new one? You can do that with your funk ass boyfriend too."

"Mm hm yeah, whatever you say Matty." You flicked your wand. Your books flying off the stack back towards their home. Mattheo held his stack out towards you. You snatched the books out of his hands, sending them back to their original spot.

"Come on, baby. We miss you. Not your skank ass boyfriend but that's besides the point. Come on are you really going to cut your friends out because your boyfriend is all "be my slave, suck my dick, make me dinner my tummy's rumbling"?" Mattheo stuck his arms out and wobbled like a zombie as he mocked Cormac. You deadpanned at him.

"Yes. That is exactly how my partner treats me." You said laced with severe sarcasm. Mattheo pointed at you.

"See. I'm glad you've realized that. But seriously, there's no way he treats you well. His middle name is Cornelius." You glared at Mattheo as you finished putting back your last book. You stifled your laugh and schooled your features. Mattheo caught it though, his grin growing.

"I mean does he even listen to the Smiths thinking of you?"

"Which one? Girlfriend in a Coma?" Mattheo’s face fell as he glared at you. Not the same one he sent to Cormac, this one was softer around the edges.

"Ha. Ha. Baby, come on. Does he even fantasize about your future together? Does he even get sick to his stomach thinking of how much he cares for you? Does he ever just look at you? To watch how pretty you are? Or does he just look at you when you can give him something?" You thought for a moment. You started to realize how little Cormac actually did for you. You covered up your concerns with a bright smile.

"Don't you have friends? Or do you only bother poor defenseless people in the library?" Mattheo rolled his eyes. He leaned against the table behind him.

"Mm hm. Listen baby, you can call me if you need anything. To beat up your-"

"Just say boyfriend"

"Punk ass boyfriend, if you feel lonely, if you need to get rid of a body, if McLaggen can't figure out how to make you cum and you need a very enthusiastic dildo, if you want arsenic to kill McLaggen, whatever I'm here for you." Mattheo gently grabbed your wrist and tugged you closer to him. He rubbed your back as he stared up at you with puppy eyes.

“If he hears you talking like that I think he’ll have your head.” You whispered to him. Mattheo shrugged. You intertwined your fingers behind Mattheo’s head. His fingers gently tracing shapes on your back. Cormac was never gentle. He always tapped you a little too hard, pulled you roughly, yanked on your clothes until you heard stitches pop. Mattheo would take his time with you while Cormac would always try to get something out of you the fastest. He always felt like he was racing against his own personal best to see how fast he could ruin your day. Mattheo tilted his head gaining your attention again.

“Could not care less about that little-“ you pressed your finger to his lips. Mattheo closed his mouth.

“I have to go.”

“To him?” You rolled your eyes at Mattheo.

“Yes I have to go, I have a date with my boyfriend.” Mattheo nodded. Just as you were about to pass him entirely, he reached out and caught your wrist.

“If he says anything to you, I mean anything. Friendly reminder; I keep my wand with me and I’m fully ready to Avada McLaggen.” It felt strange with him saying such terrible things while staring at you with such warm eyes.

“I love it when you talk dirty.” You whispered. Mattheo groaned and released your hand. He stood up from his seat on the table and disappeared behind the bookshelves. You smiled as you left to Library off to your date.

You truly tried to ignore Mattheo’s words. It’s like when you walk into someone’s home and all you smell is dog but they can’t smell anything. You become so accustomed to the smell you don’t even recognize it. Well Cormac’s shameful behavior was the dog smell and Mattheo was pointing it out. All of a sudden you started noticing things. You saw how anytime you decided to do something on your own he’d get upset. Asking if you were going to go see your “freaky Slytherin friends”. He never looked at you unless he was thinking about undressing you. You always felt cold under his eyes like you were vulnerable. Mattheo was right, McLaggen sucked. So you decided that was it. Only problem was figuring out how to end it.

You sent Pansy a long winded letter, apologizing to her and the boys, begging, crying, and plotting your breakup. You watched her as she stared at the letter on her plate from Cormac’s side. Cormac was squeezing your shoulder, always a little too hard. As Pansy started reading while pushing the nosey boys away, a smile grew. When she finished the letter she glanced over at you. Pansy grinned at you as hid your smile with McLaggen’s cloak. Pansy denied showing the boys her private letter, stuffing it into her pocket. She met you where you told her to in your letter and you both spent the night plotting. Pansy knew a girl, who knew a girl, who knew a girl, who knew a girl, who knew a girl, and that girl knew McLaggen. According to Pansy’s informants McLaggen has a crush on some Ravenclaw. Luckily Pansy also knew this girl. Pansy seemed to know a lot of girls. Pansy talked to this Ravenclaw and this Ravenclaw happened to be what Pansy would call a “girls girl.”

Here’s the plan: Ravenclaw Girl will wear her best dress. You will convince Cormac to go to this party. You’ll ask him to go get you a drink. At the drink station, Ravenclaw Girl will flirt with Cormac. He’s utter garbage so of course he’ll reciprocate. Ravenclaw Girl will ask him to follow her up to her room. You’ll wait a couple minutes and all of a sudden oh no where ever has your boyfriend gone best go look for him and now you’ve walked in on your unfaithful lover. Stage a scene in front of everyone, he probably calls you a couple bad names, you breakup and you’re back in business. You’ll be back with your freaky slytherin friends, flirting with Mattheo as friends of course, and calling Cormac every atrocious name in the book.

So the night of the party you dress in the best outfit you knew Cormac wouldn’t fuss about. It was going to be a great terrible night. You hadn’t felt this much excitement since before your god awful relationship started. Cormac complained about the stairs as you both made your way to the party. The music was too loud, the lights were too bright, the people stank too much, but nothing could bring you down. You were beaming even though you spent the first hour sitting on a blue velvet couch tucked under Cormac’s arm. Finally, you pointed out to Cormac you were a little thirsty. He groaned and stood up, moving to the drinks. You watched him from across the room. A beautiful girl with braids that turned blue at the ends approached him.

You understood Cormac’s attraction, she was stunning. Her hair reached just past the small of her back. She had dramatic, sweeping, bright blue winged eyeliner and a blue dress that swayed with her movements. It stopped at her mid thigh, trimmed with black lace. You would cheat on Cormac with her any day. You smothered your grin as you saw her gently tug him up the stairs of the girls dormitroys.

You waited a few minutes. You caught Pansy’s eyes across the room. She gave you a sinful grin and mimicked it. You looked around you. “Searching” for your faithful boyfriend.

“Oh boyfriend, where have you gone? Boyfriend where ever did you go? Oh no I can’t seem to find my lovely boyfriend, Cormac. Best go check the dorms.” You whispered to yourself. You stood and slowly made your way upstairs. You wanted to give Cormac plenty of time to get comfortable with Ravenclaw Girl. You flung open the door Ravenclaw Girl had marked with her necklace around the handle. Cormac had his tongue down her throat his hands squeezing her thighs. You gasped loudly.

“Oh. My. God.” The girl pulled back and gasped just as you did. She covered her mouth with her hands. Cormac spun around and his face fell when he looked at you. He tried to explain this away but all his excuses sounded like an extravagant way to say I tripped and fell I didn’t mean to. You let him have it. You screamed at him. You pulled out the waterworks. You stormed away from him. He followed you still trying to explain this whole situation away. The girl followed after him wanting to see this up close and personal. You spun around when you reached the middle of the stairs, visible to everyone. You called him every name in the book.

“You lying, cheating, filthy, disgusting, revolting, bastard.” You raised an octave with each insult. You saw the people around you turn to look out of the corner of your eye. Cormac tried to get a word in but you cut him off . You spilled everything how he had you working, spending all your time taking care of him and he couldn’t even have the decency to be faithful. Pansy joined you at your side, rubbing your back and glaring at Cormac. You kept yelling and scolding halfway through you noticed most of the crowd had gathered around. You kept shouting and when you finally let everything out you stared at Cormac as you caught your breath. He opened his mouth the second you closed yours. Cormac called you every degrading name he could think of. It didn’t bother you, he said them all before. Then he said it, he crossed the line.

“You hate yourself so much instead of being with a high value male like myself you’d rather fuck the disgusting freak that is Voldemort’s child” You felt your blood boil. You were going to kill Cormac McLaggen. Just not today, maybe tomorrow. You swung and hit him in the nose. Cormac’s head shot back as he quickly gripped his nose. The crowd oooed. Pansy gasped and let out an excited squeal. You heard your friends cheering.

“That’s my fucking girl.” You rolled your eyes at Mattheo’s yells and turned towards Pansy.

“Ready to go?” She nodded. As you turned to walk away Cormac spoke up from his place leaning on the stairs banister.

“I’ll gut you like a fish, and keep your-“ Mattheo’s drink flew at McLaggen’s face, drenching him.

“God just shut your mouth already.” Mattheo added, joining you at your side. The rest of the boys followed after you each stopping by McLaggen to toss in an insult. Blaise had to drag Theo away. Apparently that spaghetti whore comment still made his blood boil. Even the Ravenclaw Girl tossed in one, following after your group.

“You’re really hot when you punched your boyfriend in the face.” Mattheo whispered next to your ear as you all pushed through the crowd.

“Ex-boyfriend. And trust me I know.” You patted Mathheo’s cheek.

Audrey: Are you sure you aren't secretly in hell? Because it sounds like you might be in hell.

For some time, what I liked the most about Lily (and the basis for my characterization of her) was that she had ended her friendship with Snape. Not in a vindictive, I-Hate-Him-And-He-Deserves-The-Worst type of way, but in a "I'm so glad she realized their friendship had became toxic at that point and she made the right choice for herself and cut him off". I really admired her capacity to stand up for herself, you know?

What do you think about their friendship?

I’m really interested in Lily’s friendship with Snape. I get that he was the first peer who (unlike her sister) accepted her as a witch and despite it. He explained what Hogwarts would be like and made her feel excited and less nervous about going. He was clearly very taken with her (as a friend initially anyway), and reassured her (massive lie) that being a muggleborn wouldn’t matter.

But…

The thing is, we know that at the very start of his friendship with Lily:

He was mean to Petunia, and purposely dropped a branch on top of her

He knew more dark magic going into Hogwarts than most 7th years (source: Sirius Black)

He got sorted into slytherin and we know by the end of 5th year he was:

Friends with wannabe Death Eaters

Friends with Lucius Malfoy (that’s from a younger age as he was older and left school years beforehand)

Making up very vicious/dangerous dark magic spells like sectumsempra and using it on “enemies”

Making up other less vicious but still not pleasant spells like Levicorpus

Hanging out with bigoted wankers who called muggleborn students slurs and he was also doing this too (except not to Lily)

Hanging out with Death Eater wannabes who attacked Mary McDonald and calling the attack with dark magic a bit of a joke

Trying to out Remus Lupin for being a werewolf

In what universe did it take Lily (who we know was clever, cheeky, popular, stood up to other popular people like the marauders) so long to figure out her friend was a supremacist arsehole who she needs to ditch goodo, in fact, yesterday???

How do we understand this serious lapse in judgement/blind spot when it came to Snape?

I have some ideas…

What if Lily is really loyal to her friends to the same degree as James? Imagine someone trying to warn James that one of his best friends was a bad guy - he wouldn’t believe it (eh, wait, that’s exactly what happened, it was clear SOMEONE was the spy and it being a friend of his wasn’t a runner!!) - she regards it as the height of dishonour to mistrust her friends. Presumably Snape keeps some of his least savoury elements hidden from her (although by the time of SWM in 5th year she is aware of eg his calling people mudbloods etc) and she refuses to believe he’s gotten THAT bad.

She has a soft spot for the underdog. Snape is a kind of underdog - very obviously poor and halfblood in slytherin, a bit of an easy target for bullies, not good looking, grumpy, a bit painful personality wise etc. She stands up for him immediately as soon as James and Snape go after him. And she immediately stands up for Remus when Snape tries to say he’s a werewolf etc. Of course, James Rich Boy Mollycoddled Doted-On Quidditch-Star Clever Clogs Top of His Class Fleamont Pooter is the literal polar opposite of an underdog (you’re fucked, Potter)

We are told she’s kind, it’s a defining feature of her personality - so probably she makes excuses for him - hang on, she says it herself, she makes excuses and stands up for him and defends him to her other friends despite the shit-ton of evidence that this guy is bad news for too long… until she can’t

When SWM happens, she’s confronted with the ugly truth that her friendship with Snape is beyond redemption. It’s very hard to admit that and let go of a relationship- platonic or romantic - that you’ve invested in for years. HE WAS HER BEST FRIEND- that’s like James realising Sirius is a Voldy supporter and ditching him. Just because we in this fandom hate Snape doesn’t mean she did.

And Lily does that. When it finally hits her (late, in my opinion, because of the above reasons), she makes the right choice for herself and cuts him out. She doesn’t give into him when he refuses to go away and tries to get her to still be friends with her outside Gryffindor Tower. She sticks to her (right) decision and I applaud her for that difficult but really sensible, insightful decision. I think that’s proof that Lily is not a walk-over. It takes her ages to realise who Snape has become but when she gets it, she acts. And I love her for it. She did the right thing for herself I completely agree 🥺♥️

Like sure, the obvious shit like if someone's speaking bad about me, I would subtly say it in a way that suggest I want them hexed... but also like... I would make them do my bidding, "Oh, I just totally forgot to make my homework. Can I copy yours, Blaise?" In the most sweet-innocent-tooth rotting tone, or like, "I had to give this book back, but I forgot, and my feet hurt :("

Of course, they would catch on by the third time, but I would abuse that power as much as I could.

hello! yes! i'll be honest talking about things like this always make me a little nervous, and i feel obligated to preface anything i say with a disclaimer that none of it really matters, nothing i say matters, and you should do what you like, because--who cares. i am not an authority on--anything, frankly. my opinion holds no more weight than the next guy's, and all i'm doing here is giving it, so. essentially what im saying is--people are perfectly entitled to disagree with me, but people are not entitled to be mean to me about it xx

having said that. it is my personal opinion that s x barty is one of the worst fucking things i have ever heard lol. who even is barty who is that guy. why would s be interested in him at all. i do not understand it it does not make sense to me. from where are we sourcing the character traits and personality that we are giving barty that would ever endear sirius to him, because it objectively cannot be canon.

overall i do not get the new interest in barty + evan + pandora (+ regulus, but we won't go there)...at all, other than guessing that people were bored with the marauders and wanted a new version of them (and new celebrities to fancast) while simultaneously changing next to nothing about them other than superimposing them onto the first slytherin side characters they could rustle up. i expect ive become a bit of a broken record in regards to my dislike of the popular meow-meow-ification + complete absolution of regulus as a character in order to make him a loveable oc (just as i think erasing all the negative traits that r/s have in order to make them more likeable is just as boring), and all of that applies to those other guys as well (with the slight difference that they are, somehow, even less interesting and significant than regulus in canon), so i won't get into that too much. but i think what you say about having no emotional connection to any of it is exactly right lol--it is a sort of shift? i guess? in the fandom that is simply of no interest to me. they are characters that i just have no emotional investment in and admittedly struggle a little to understand why other people do. i am emotionally invested in, like, five characters overall (and even out of those--there's only two i'm really here for innit xx) and i personally cannot extend that investment to a creepy little side character who is mentioned maybe twice in the entire series.

and that is okay! i do not need to understand it. i don't want to say it annoys me because honestly--i don't go there, its nothing to do with me. if i dont like it i just wont interact with it, and the fact that it doesn't interest me has no bearing on what other people are into or want to do, and i couldn't give less of a shit what people do with the canon material, which is largely garbage anyway. take the bits you want from it, play around with those and ignore the rest. in that respect we are all doing exactly the same thing. but yeah i think s x barty is genuinely awful lol. hate it. very terrible. he's already got a loser werewolf boyfriend and he loves him so so much. leave him alone.

this is kinda weird and meta and i cannot tell if it’s written coherently so plz just hear me out

so yk how J*R admitted that, when she was writing OOTP at the same time as the first movie was being made, she made a lot of the changes/revelations we see for severus’ character bc she liked alan rickman’s portrayal so much? her only valid opinion

prior to that it is much easier to see the relationship between james/the marauders and severus as ‘slytherin vs gryffindor antagonistic’

(the prank (PoA) is imo played off more as ‘sirius was in the wrong by organising it, james did better by following severus and getting him out of there’ without input from OOTP)

anyway, this is all to say that pre-OOTP james and post-OOTP james feel like very different characters, bc one is very much good-guy-in-the-making and the other is the worst of the worst, and i think it can be brought back to J*R’s inability to write interesting slyth vs gryff rivalries without resorting to bullying and harassment from one party (the way she writes slytherins makes me want to smash my head against walls)

I’ve heard of that claim before, and iirc I’ve seen a source of her saying that a long time ago, but could you tell where cause I’d love to confirm this? 😭 She had already had Snape’s arc planned out because during the earlier films Alan wanted to quit his role because playing Evil Greasy Potions Master might get him type-casted (since he’s played villains before) and he didn’t want that, so Rowling decided to tell him about the grandiose reveal in DH, which is what made him stay.

I actually think that was the point. In the earlier books we’re led to believe that Snape had no good reason for hating Harry’s dad and only resented James (and Harry) because he was a popular, loved Gryffindor and a talented Quidditch player. It was a bit of a red herring, and in PoA when Sirius and Remus are introduced we’re told about the prank and since Harry already hates Snape, obviously loves his father, and wants to know more info about his parents because he now knows two people who were the closest of friends with them, he assumes Sirius is right and evil Sneep Snoop is wrong and was just being petty as per usual. So for the first five books the readers are like “yo James is the perfect awesome guy and Snape is the jealous bad one,” which is increased when we remember James is a Gryffindor and Severus was a Slytherin, we sort of get the same image as Harry and Draco. It’s an extremely black-and-white image, the dawning realisation that it might not be just a simple rivalry/jealously-issue is what makes SWM in the 5th book so jaw-dropping to all of us, because we actually realise that it wasn’t the whole story. “Snape was right all along” is a super scary realisation for Harry, especially since it makes him completely rethink the image of his father that’s been painted for him by basically everyone around him, everyone except the one character Harry despises most of all.

This isn’t to say JKR doesn’t make shit decisions in writing, I 100000% get what you’re saying, but I think this was deliberately written that way so it can to be a big build-up to the plot twist. (Doesn’t make it very well-written, but it was still her intention ig.) and tbh the fact that we have so many unanswered questions/concerns about the plot holes/arcs/writing/etc and have to fill it in with the most plausible assumptions really goes to show how overrated JKR’s writing is and how her series has been enriched mostly by its fandom.

Also dw you’ve gotten your point across very well, I always get concerned with my writing because I’m worried it just sounds like a pile of unorganised bullshit 💀

ooooh, anon, what have you done here. yes. do i have headcanons of my favorite pair of siblings? yes, yes i do.

also their relationship is one of my favorites to think about, and if i was cooler i would make one of those HP posts that uses the texts and cites their sources and it would be beautiful but i simply cannot so here are some fun headcanons about the Black Brothers being...brothers. <3 (please note i said FUN headcanons, but ya know, can be persuaded to angst up these as well and do some unpacking of their relationship)

-I think people forget birth order sometimes. and Regulus. for all intents and purposes. was a YOUNGER sibling. and SIrius was the OLDEST. and if you don't think regulus took immense pleasure in annoying the shit out of sirius at every opportunity, you are wrong.

-Regulus moving everything in Sirius's room one inch to the left.

-"Don't touch that" "I'm not touching it" regulus says as he is a mere millimeter away from one of sirius's belongings

-Reg got to play quidditch, Sirius did not. Sirius was an heir. Sirius was first born, much other things to be responsible for. Reg got to play quidditch.

-Regulus is an artist. I don't care, in every world i make with him, he is an artist. and I think Sirius was good with a quill too BUT he "wasn't as good as reg" so why bother? also was a frivolous activity. Reg got to play quidditch and paint. Sirius didn't. Reg uses oil paints.

-I think they both liked being in their backyard at home though. It was their favorite place, and both of them have very fond memories minding their own business outdoors or looking at the stars.

-Regulus could narrow in on everyone's deepest insecurity in second. Like Sirius was the own who would OPENLY look disgusted and have a short remark to tell you right away, but Reg kind of waited a bit and then would be like "You don't want to annoy me. I can ruin your self esteem in a second" and they'd be like "Yah right" and Reg would be like "Nail beds."

-Cut to a scene of some other slytherin wearing gloves.

-Reg stomped his foot during arguments with Sirius. Always.

-Reg was also one of the only people Sirius would cave for, every time. (Other person was james potter. do with that what you will)

He wouldn't.

Tom Riddle was a poor and presumably muggleborn orphan without a penny to his name. Durmstrang is not going to go out of its way to take a muggleborn student outside of their jurisdiction who cannot pay for their education.

For Tom Riddle, it was very clearly Hogwarts or bust, he had no other options.

It also seems, in general, this isn't a thing. Oh, it's discussed for Draco and all but going to Hogwarts is a source of pride and the thing to do if you're in Great Britain/Ireland (unclear which part of Ireland Seamus is from, I forget if it was ever specified). No one goes to another school, even when there's trolls rampaging in the basement and the chambers of secrets has been opened.

It just isn't done.

Alright, Tom Riddle Attends Durmstrang

Tom has the worst introduction to the wizarding world by Albus Dumbledore then is left to his own devices to somehow find Diagon Alley and get all his supplies on whatever budget he was allotted by the school.

Somehow, during all that, Tom overhears that there are other magical academies in Europe beyond Hogwarts. Tom fishes for information and hears about Beaux Batons in France and Durmstrang off in Norway somewhere.

Now, Hogwarts sounds cool, and all, but does he really want to spend the next seven years under that Dumbledore fellow's thumb? Not to mention his day in Diagon Alley has gone to show him that he's starting off to a great disadvantage due to his background.

It's not just because he's penniless and an orphan, bad enough, but because he doesn't have any magical parent he can point to. Handwaving gestures and "MY FATHER COULD HAVE BEEN A WIZARD" aren't so good, especially with a last name like Riddle.

That decides it, Tom's going to try and apply to these other schools. Beux Batons, accepting all of western Europe aside from Britain, says no because they're at capacity. Durmstrang, for whatever reason, says yes (if only because some of the shit Tom is describing here is intriguing enough to get him an interview).

Tom gets a slot in Durmstrang

Well, What Happens?

Tom gets the shit beat out of him, that's what happens.

He's still a muggleborn, still a penniless orphan, but now he also doesn't speak the language and was clearly rejected from Hogwarts where he should have been going.

Much like what I imagine happened initially in Hogwarts, Tom beats them up in turn and puts the fear of god into his classmates as he would in the orphanage and endeavors to be top of his class.

The difference being that Tom may not find out about horcruxes depending on what is or isn't in the library. He doesn't open the Chamber of Secrets or even know about it beyond being a legend as he's not at Hogwarts. He may or may not ever realize he's the heir of Slytherin and that parseltongue is a hereditary British ability. More, he is now in a country that does get occupied by muggle Nazis and... Well we don't know what happens with Grindelwald but Durmstrang I believe came under his control.

I imagine this sours Tom to Grindelwald's ideals as Tom, being presumably muggleborn, is closer to the receiving end of whatever Grindelwald's policies are being about.

It's one thing to be in Britain fantasizing about being a dark lord, another to be in a school under a dark lord's thumb and growing up with it all first hand.

This may inspire Tom to still go out and become a dark lord later but on the other hand he didn't live through the Blitz and was told to go home to muggle London anyway, he's very divorced from Hogwarts and the British wizarding world in general with his seven years in a foreign country, and he has no real personal connection to Britain anymore.

I doubt he'd become the Voldemort that Harry Potter knows or ever even return to Britain at all.

Okay, I just wanted to say thank you for giving us a prospective of what Harry is like from an out side source. I know Demelza is getting close to Harry now, but she wasn't always.

We know that Demelza suspected that Harry was abused by his aunt and uncle and that people gossiped about it (which is horrible)

Demelza thinks Harry is kind. She even talks to her mother about how kind he is to Colin and others.

It's sad to note that people assumed that Harry was being abused by his "family" and no one tried to do anything (I know the Weasley's were trying). I don't blame any of the students, but some of the teachers should have done something (or were they all just following Dumbledore orders).

I am surprised that none of the Slytherin's tried to make fun of Harry for being abused, or was it normal for abuse to happen in pureblood house holds so they just though it was normal.

Did Hermione not clue in that Harry was abused or did she not care? I feel like she had the power to tell her parents about the abuse and get the muggle police involved. Also, Hermione never seemed as upset about Harry going back to the Dursleys house.

I mean, you have a bunch of kids who just suspect shit but can’t do anything. They don’t tell their parents until they see he has a new guardian in the papers (a la Demelza). And you have professors who don’t care (i.e. Snape) or professors like McGonagall and Hagrid who know he has no where else to go because they know all about the blood protection. Then you have people like Ron and the twins who have seen it first hand, you see the Weasleys always welcoming him with open arms and warm smiles.

As for the Slytherins, I could see them thinking he just wants attention, which is the opposite of what Harry wants. I feel like it would be more widespread and known in Gryffindor and the people who have interacted with Harry the most.

Hermione just assumes it’s not happening because she just assumes he wouldn’t go back there if it was bad. Harry sure as hell doesn’t say anything. I think even Ron, who I think is closer to Hermione than Harry is, wouldn’t dare say anything because he knows it would just upset Harry.

My Hogwarts Legacy Experience

Yeah, I've been busy last month. Not this month, this month I'm only busy with Uni, but LAST month, ohhh boy.

The following piece of text and screenshots is my own opinion on this game and also somehow a summary of the story, so spoilers ahead!

The ones who know me a bit longer know, that I love Paul. He is my favorite character of all time, of all fandoms, and thus I gotta include him in every RPG that has character customization xD

So, here it is, Paul's journey in Hogwarts Legacy.

Actually, it's just gonna be a lot of screenshots and my comments on them xD

Paul looks frikin' hilarious with that hat on, as if he's scared of getting sorted into anything other than Slytherin. Because for some reason he thinks that might happen.

Oh who would've guessed, it's fucking Slytherin.

I forgot to mention the huge dragon that scarred him for life - BEFORE arriving at Hogwarts. At least I have an explanation for Paul's dick attitude other than 'My brother is a Hufflepuff'.

Other thing I forgot to mention. Paul is magic. Like, special magic. He can see the ancient magic powers from the past and use them, so that makes him... a... It makes him stronger than he should be.

This man is what I always wanted as a teacher and very rarely got. But Paul didn't like him that much, soft teaching methods etc.

The motion blur, I can't.

Even bigger legend, this man.

Lovely woman, was clinging onto her for dear life, talk to me about your bitchy professor, I wanna hear everything. Paul maybe not, but this isn't just about him.

If I ever see Paul do this with a Pokemon, I'll give him an award. A medal. I'll throw a frikin' party for him and his newly achieved honor level.

Got a garden for animals, he doesn't like to take care of. Great.

I mean, I forced him to take care of 'em, I love animals, but still, I don't think he liked the part where he had to fight a big ass squid faced bull.

Astronomy seems to be more his subject.

Also we are making friends. Somehow. It's the only way to learn unvorgivable curses and Paul needs them to feel powerful, the only goal he has this entire time. THE POWER.

Except for maybe this one. This one is now part of his inventory. Protective senses are tingling literally every time because this girl is actively searching for danger. Literally. And I love her for it. Paul? ...Kinda, give him some slack, he likes excitement and battles, who could blame him.

But THIS one. Very special place in his and my heart.

Gah, Tumblr won't let me have more than 30 pictures, so... we won the trophy in the end, mastered the Dark Arts and found the biggest source of power wizardkind ever imagined. Cool.

No seriously, this game was amazing. The beginning was a bit slow, but once you get the hang of it, it's just great. Don't have much else to say, the only sad part is, that we don't really get to know, or decide, the backstory for our character, but that's all.

Re: your Regulus as Draco rip-off post.. agree one thousand percent. Regulus is given so many traits that are outright stolen from other Slytherins in the story. And the thing is, I wouldn't even care so much if 1) the situations and traits they are ripping off weren't cheapened, flattened, and done poorly for the sake of babygirlifying Regulus and 2) they didn't look down on fans of the characters they are ripping off.

Fanon Regulus being "forced into being a Death Eater" Pfft OKAY. Fanon Regulus being a sarcastic mildly antagonistic Slytherin interested in a Gryffindor Potter. Do they not see that they're describing Drarry? Or fanon Regulus being an antisocial potions prodigy who spies on Voldemort to protect someone he loves and dies fighting for the light. Yeah no that's not Regulus's story.

Fanon Regulus is endowed with all of these compelling traits and arcs from other canon characters, with none of the nuance present in their originators, because idk they can't seem to handle it or something. And yet they dare to look down on fans of Draco, Drarry, or Snape? It's so brazenly hypocritical.

no bc i get what ur saying and ur right!! like. in canon we know absolutely fucking nothing about regulus black ok. like. we know his name. we know he started hogwarts in 72. he was a slytherin, he became a death eater at sixteen, he had a collage of death eater propaganda on his bedroom wall, sirius described him as quite naive and said he was reminded by his parents that regulus was a better son, and then he had his plot w/ voldemort and died at 17/18 and thats it!! obv our two sources on regulus's personality come from regulus and kreacher but they are both two VERY biased sources. we don't really know much about his personality other than that he was raised believing his parents bigotry unlike sirius, that he was pretty smart and what we can infer from him being sorted into slytherin. other than that literally allllll of it is pulled straight from draco malfoy, mainly draco in drarry fics. i haven't read many other fics ft. different draco ships, i don't love dramione but i'm assuming he is similarly characterised - maybe just more "oh feel sorry for me i am so tortured and mysterious - in them. and don't get me wrong, draco and regulus ARE similar. one of my favourite parts abt the golden trio vs. marauders eras is that characters seem to intentionally mirror each other? and also, they correct the 'mistakes' of the past gen's lives. like. sirius and harry are so fucking similar, but harry actually. survived? and hermione and lily are clear mirrors. even snape and luna, i admit i really don't like snape, but luna is so similar except the fact that... despite her getting teased and bullied she never became cruel? and neville, just like peter he lived in the shadow of ron, hermione and harry but he never resented them for it. however it's one thing to draw parallels between the characters and another to kinda just. blatantly rip off someone's entire personality but also??? try and make them a good person. like regulus black fans will do ANYTHING to insist he is not a bad person bc he's babygirl and he can do no wrong. which. babe. its fine if you're joking but like some of them are serious about it!!!

and like. the real infuriating part is that the average jegulus fan will shit on draco malfoy and drarry as a concept like. babe. you are sat there reading a DRARRY fic, basically. if you downloaded a jegulus fic or a drarry fic and reversed the names, ignored the chronological fuck ups and such, they would read exactly the same!!!!!

don't get me wrong, even if we strip away alllll of both of draco and regulus's fanon elements, they still have parallels. jkr probably created reg for the plot elements but also to mirror draco. she compared them in an interview one time, she said that they both got into the death eaters too deeply, they were attracted to it at first but that the reality of what it meant to be a death eater was way too much to handle. yeah. however even if regulus was freaked out by the concept of ritual sacrifices and brutal massacres and voldemort killing his house elf, he still hated muggleborns and believed in blood purity - which. is a thing that regulus fans commonly just cut out of fics? i've never read a drarry fic where draco didn't believe his parents were correct. but also their situations are a little different because whilst draco genuinely didn't have anyone in his life who didn't believe in blood purity, regulus did. sirius 100% tried to explain to him that their parents were liars and there wasn't anything wrong or different about muggleborns however he didn't listen. which jegulus fans seem to always coincidentally forget? and yeah okay, it's a fic. embellesh a little. break canon if you'd like. but the second you obsess over and love a character who is literally the wizard equivalent of a nazi and a canon blood purist despite having multiple opportunities for an out, you completely lose the ability to shit on any other character for doing the same thing. you can't shit on bellatrix for murder or evan and barty for being death eaters or anything. and it's insane to me because they dont!!!!!!! they dont shit on bellatrix OR evan and barty and its not even in the sense of like.... enjoying a morally grey nuanced character? the average regulus/jegulus stan strips away every single morally grey and. awful thing about reg and the slytherin skittles just to??? idk. validate it in their own mind. that it is ok to like and enjoy a bad person.

(on the topic of snape - i don't get how regulus fans can dump on him either? like. okay. i hate snape. however my reasons for hating snape are more so to do with the fact that his incel behaviour and obsession with lily genuinely freaks me out so fucking much, and there is absolutely no way you can defend a man who vindictively bullied an eleven year old just because that boy could have been the chosen one, and if he had been then maybe lily wouldn't have died, to the extent where when neville was thirteen snape was his BIGGEST fear. this boy was dropped out of a window by his own uncle, spent years terrified that he would be a squib, WHOSE OWN PARENTS WERE TORTURED TO THE POINT OF INSANITY BY BELLATRIX LESTRANGE and his TEACHER was his biggest fear. that's my issue with him. however. the average regulus fan doesn't give a shit about lily evans, the majority of them villainise her because james loves her - and god forbid that man loves a woman and ur no longer interested in fetishising his relationship!!!!!!!!! either that or they make her a lesbian and pair her off with usually either mary or pandora because they have to physically make her unattracted to men so she won't threaten jegulus. like. i like marylily. i like jegulus. i like jily. i lOVE pandora/lily. one of my favourite lily ships is her and marlene, i'm a sucker for the jock x nerd dynamic! but. you don't have to make her not romantic and sexually interested in MEN just so she isn't a threat to jegulus. that's misogynistic. it is actually possible to not want to fuck a certain man even if you like their general species! lily went six years not wanting to date that man, she can continue to do so in your fic whilst still being attracted to men. it's. odd? why not just make her bisexual?? ah, yeah, because you don't want james to be an option at ALL. anyway sorry i got distracted however my point stands.)

idk man i say all of this whilst Enjoying jegulus and regulus. i hate fics that write him as some sort of completely innocent in no way bad person, but the fics where he genuinely is... self serving and morally grey and only really cares about himself and the people he loves and values? yeah. theyre enjoyable. however that entire personality is just stolen from fucking draco. you can tell bc it came about in 2019/2020 when jegulus got super popular and im 99% sure it was just because all the draco malfoy/drarry stans got pissed off with dracotok and HIS morally grey personality and general... dickish cruel horrible behaviour being ripped away? and even jegulus's dynamic - it's JUST drarry. there is no other way around it. and it's so fucking frustrating when reg stans actively dump on drarry and draco as a character WHEN THEIR FAVE IS HIS CHARACTER.

tdlr: i don't hate regulus, i think he's interesting. i enjoy him in a lot of fics. however it's so fucking frustrating when people that love him a. strip away every single negative part of his character in an attempt to justify themselves liking him when... he isn't that guy. regulus black is a child who believed in his parents bigotry and got in too deep and then died making a last ditch attempt to kill voldemort Not because he genuinely didn't believe in his cause but because voldemort pissed him off by trying to kill kreacher! and b. that jegulus fans regularly shit on draco malfoy when... he's the original? and they hate drarry meanwhile almost every single version of jegulus's dynamic is just blatantly them, whether the authors are aware of it or not.
