Hey lovelies! Today's been amazing! Definitely been a lot of engagement and we're getting to celebrate our lovely captain! Soooo many people signed the 50th birthday Kudoboard that ended tonight ( and the Taika Kudoboard that ended yesterday). So many crewmates stepped out of their comfort zone and put themselves out there, and I just want to say how proud of you I am. I know it's hard to put yourself out there in case you can get hurt, but you still did it for the good of something / someone you love, and you should be proud of that! I hope you're getting some joy out of these days. I know it can be a bit of a double edged sword because we miss Stede and Ed and the whole Revenge crew so much. Guess James wanted the look but wasn't keen of paying the big bucks for the original. // I don't think price was the issue, the new superman is supposed to be 25 years old (the new batman will be younger too, apparantley around 30 years old) + there's been rumours of Gunn disliking Cavill for years now.

I'm very confused how Jensen was even considered for it? He's 20 years too old and he doesn't even look remotley like Clark Kent. His fans seriously need to lay off the crack and stop forcing him down people's throats

I didnt know about Gunn disliking Cavil rumors (I VERY loosely follow the news about DC/Marvel BTS/ castings nowadays cause I pretty much in my superhero fatigue era), but you're right. I just thought since they made sure Cavill dropped The Witcher, they would stick with him. And if needed, CGI a younger version of him, like Marvel did to Samuel L Jackson (Fury) in Captain Marvel. But that might have been more costly than actually hiring another actor within the age bracket they're looking, so Gunn went for a younger actor.

As for JA, he has never been considered for DC's Super-Man, much less short listed for it. What is happening right now is that some of his fans are working for small entertainment websites (or creating their own) to write articles linking his name to anything DC/Marvel or whatever is the flavor of the week Jensen talks about in cons. And since for news like these, there's no requirement for legitimate sources, its easy to make it look like authentic news. Then it gets pick up by larger websites and boom, another Jensen was 'shortlisted for Captain America' urban legend, all over again.

I agree, there's not the way to win good will to an B-list/C-list actor from general Audience with the way his fans act.

Hi Pika, I don't know if you've been following gmmtv's take over of wabi sabi, I just want to ask you: given that so many companies are part of TBLC which is like a Thai BL content association, do you have any idea why gmmtv isn't a part of it? BOC, DMD, Star Hunter, Copy A Bangkok, Channel 3 are all part of it, I'm just wondering why gmmtv isn't even thought it's the biggest bl company? Wabi Sabi was/is a part of it. (idk exactly)

For folks interested in it, here's the livestream they hosted for it (it's 45ish minutes) and it doesn't have subs though. But it seems to be connected to Thailand's soft power committee, here's an article on that:

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who chairs the committee, tasked deputy chairwoman Paetongtarn Shinawatra with leading two national initiatives: One Family One Soft Power (OFOS) and the Thailand Creative Content Agency (THACCA). The goal of the initiatives is skills training to create 20 million jobs that will generate annual income of 4 trillion baht. OFOS and THACCA will be implemented in three phases: First, to boost human resources, 20 million children, adults, and seniors in under village and community funds will get free training in fields such as food, Muay Thai, arts, performance, singing, design, fashion, e-sports, and more, free of charge.

For folks who may not know, soft power is a term coined by political scientist Joseph S. Nye Jr. in his article Soft Power published by Foreign Policy magazine.

"In the 1980s, political scientist Joseph Nye Jr. coined the term soft power, defining it as a country’s ability to influence others without resorting to coercive pressure. In practice, that process entails countries projecting their values, ideals, and culture across borders to foster goodwill and strengthen partnerships." (source)

Soft power is a form of governmental influence internationally, and works conjunction with "hard power".

Examples of "soft power" are the American space program, athletes performing at the Olympics, and on the media side, military propaganda films like Captain Marvel, (yes I consider Captain Marvel a military propaganda film the film opens with a freaking air force ad lmao).

You see other countries using similar tactics as well, for every Top Gun there's China's Wolf Warrior 2 or Hidden Blade. For South Korea, BTS and k-pop is most definitely used as a source of soft power. This is just something governments do.

Okay so like, gmmtv and BL we've been hearing for a minute now that BL and GL are part of the Thai governments plans for soft power.

Mile and Apo have spoken about this specifically when promoting Man Suang and here's a recent video of them working in conjunction with the government on Shine:

It's not just BL either, Idol Factory's Freen and Becky of The Gap fame got in on this too:

So like, it sounds like this meeting/committee in general is just an extension of the Thai governments plans for expanding their soft power which includes how to better support this now highly in demand industry (BL/GL shows) b/c the government sees its international value.

I can only assume that like, gmmtv feels it doesn't need~ government support as a production company? They're the biggest BL studio in the game and have an annoying stranglehold on territories like America and Latin America already. It doesn't really matter what the quality of the shows even are, gmmtv have that sweet parasocial grip on audiences.

[my forever frustrations with gmmtv and how they sell idols and parasocial relationships not BL/GL shows is a totally different post so lemme stop]

Other companies don't really have that same hold on international audiences. At least not consistently? And the biggest concern is funding.

I think anyone with eyeballs can see Kinnporsche is the best well produced BL that's come out of Thailand (argue with the wall) in terms of overall technical quality. But that level of quality is expensive, the CGI in The Sign is freaking expensive, The Next Prince's pilot is so obviously pricey as all fuck you can tell the studio is banking on it selling.

Which is why studios like Idol Factory, Domandi or BOC only come out with a one or two shows a year in comparison to gmmtv's like 16. They need funding, not just for filming the show but also marketing. Filmmaking is hella expensive.

[I'm not talking about whether y'all liked this show or that show, I'm talking about technical quality, shows like Kinnporsche, The Sign, Pit Babe are all better on a technical level than stuff like 1000 Stars, Only Friends or Cooking Crush.]

Why didn't gmmtv attend the event or participate, baby I legit do not know. I can't answer that with any sort of certainty only their execs could answer that, I can only guess.

And my best guess is b/c the company feels confident they're fine on their own. They don't need funding assistance, nor assistance reaching an international market (tho maybe some assistance in getting their contracts straight hope Ossan's Love doesn't face the same distribution issues as Cherry Magic lmao).

Of course this isn’t reliable since I forgot what the source is but I had also heard that Disney was the one who had chosen not to give him the Prince Eric role, but he and his team made it look like it just conflicted with his schedule. I think this is the case for many rumors around him tbh, like Elvis too. the whole little mermaid thing was fucking weird.

first we heard he was rumoured for it. then we heard a very reliable story from very official industry sources saying that he had the role. we were told that for at least a few weeks without any pushback. people reacted saying ew gross no thank you. many people posting how old he looked in comparison to halle. the reaction was not great. then we heard suddenly that nope, he did not in fact have the role and he'd "rejected" it.

i think disney or HIS people were testing to see if it would land and how well it would be received. it wasn't, so disney said maybe not.

in this time he was still i believe working on his marvel thing, and auditioning for numerous other roles. so hyping up his disney thing helped create the idea he was in demand.

the elvis thing made it more obvious because his entire promo for his album was about the elvis audition and the false idea that he'd been a close second to getting the role. they literally leaked a video of him singing elvis as a kid, had the director talk about him, and had him talk about this in his first few interviews. all to try and build up his hype for his roles in DWD/MP so when they came out we'd be thinking "he would've been elvis, he was clearly very coveted and must be really good".

this is how the industry creates narratives and why some celebs seem to have everything working for them and others don't. it's a very weinstein with shakespeare in love type thing. the industry wants/needs a leading male. harry sells lots of tickets to shrieking babby fangirls who buy any old piece of shit available. it's obvious why the industry would try and manufacture a hype for him and try and laud him before we'd seen him. if he'd been a success it would be HUGE money for them.

So i saw one acct posting that "two of the most popular BTS members will have a magazine photoshoot together" and technically we know when it comes to like that taekook are the most famous (even if jimin is know as naruto of kpop) so yeah and some 1-2 other accts also said that taekook will have something toghter...

The acct which posted that all their news comes true 99-99.99% so it's HIGHLY coming this month or next (I'm guessing probably nxt as it's yoongi's tour goin on).

despite the best efforts of tumblr's advertising team, i watched a bit of the new one piece show w my brother, and. holy fuck i love it. i never got into the manga or anime bc it was too much for me to get into - the manga and anime were so long and involved. i love detective conan even though its so long bc its broken up into way more manageable chunks through the 4ish-chapter murder mystery format, but one piece is a much longer continuous story.

i also just. didn't love the art style?? i'm not a huge fan of oda's style of character design (to each their own!). i dont love the fairy tail art style for much the same reasons, including how cookie cutter sexy so many of the women are and the sort of transphobia and/or fatphobia underlying a couple specific character designs. this is obv a critique made with very little knowledge of either source material, but it was enough of an irk going in for me that it prevented me from getting into either show.

the live action one piece, though, is a much better entry point for the series for me, because i don't feel overwhelmed with the sheer amount of content. it also solved my personal issues with the aesthetics of the show by grounding all the character designs in reality a little more. im a huge fan of the casting in this show, especially because it seems to me like they're taking deliberate steps to rework those iffy character decisions. there are a couple other bts things i noticed, like a large amount of physical set pieces, that are only unique to me bc im used to the marvel movie "everything is a soundstage" mentality but makes the whole world more real to me in a way i think i needed for this show.

i don't watch a lot of live action shows, especially anime adaptations, but this one is clearly made with a ton of passion and it's a great introduction to this longrunning and clearly beloved series for anyone who may never have otherwise given one piece a chance. i really hope it gets another season (or two, or three-) and i really recommend it!

It has been 2 months since BTS's Jin enlisted. However, his name is constantly seen in all of the biggest media outlets, social media, and even TV News. All eyes are on Jin, who was the commander of his training unit. These days people talk about how Jin demonstrated exceptional performance in the military and was chosen to take the position of training assistant. The first batch of trainees, who will be led by Jin, is going to arrive at the camp on February 14. The news of Jin's dancing team winning a talent show became a hot topic as well. It was reported that Jin took the role of a dancing instructor when preparing for the competition.

On February 7, a catchy hashtag, "Captain Korea Jin," was trending on Twitter. The keyword was also among the trending topics in the US, Indonesia, the Philippines, and in other countries.

Under the hashtag, fans were sharing their favorite pictures of Jin's broad shoulders and other photos that have that "Captain Korea" vibe to them. They've also trended "Proud of you Jin," along with the other hashtag. Many people brought up the memories of Jin representing South Korea at the UN or speaking at the White House. His quotes from those events have been going viral many times.

"Captain Korea Jin" became a popular topic due to multiple K-media outlets calling Jin so in their articles. However, it's not new in the list of Jin's nicknames because people have been calling him that ever since 2016 (including the BTS members themselves). It was popular as a reference to Jin's "worldwide" shoulders and athleticism. Jin's triangle-shaped shoulders-to-waist ratio was always compared to Marvel's Captain America.
