details inside the jalali house in srinagar, kashmir, built by agh syed safdar jalali in 1863. one of many "heritage houses" constructed by wealthy denizens of kashmir's cities during a period of architectural renaissance, it uses every kashmiri architecture and craft technique that you could possibly imagine; from taq architecture to resist earthquakes, to the papier-mache decals on its walls. today, it's cared for by jalali's descendants and is open to tourists.

This week's deep dive rec is Slate's Slow Burn: The L.A. Riots podcast, hosted by Joel Anderson, which is a great example of how long-form reporting can give context to complex social and historical events:
In 1992, a jury failed to convict the four Los Angeles police officers who’d been captured on videotape beating Rodney King. The city erupted into fire and chaos—the culmination of decades of unchecked police abuse and racial injustice.
For the sixth season of Slate’s Slow Burn, Joel Anderson returns to explore the people and events behind the biggest civil disturbance in American history—a story that’s still playing out today.

Yay, eclipse! Eclipse day was great. :-D
I worked from home today, and I had the NASA channel on in another room. Everyone was so excited, I loved it I loved hearing the cheers of the crowds in the path of totality, which sadly, didn't include me. I think we experienced 90-95%.
I went outside to peek..I left my eclipse glasses at work on my desk, I cannot believe it...so I used a pair of UV sunglasses and a welder's helmet. Worked *great* but probably wasn't the most responsible choice. Still, it worked great! I was extremely excited when I saw it happening and kept saying, "This is so cool!" No, this wasn't my first eclipse, but it really is SO COOL.
Bees! I heard the announcers saying something about animals but as I was working, didn't think about it much until...
A carpenter bee (the big fat ones that bore holes) was flying around the back porch (which they do sometimes, since the wood isn't painted). It's getting warm, so I wasn't surprised. Then another one showed up, and they started getting a little more aggressive than usual. I went back in the house for a few minutes so they could calm down.
But! When I went back out another couple of bees had joined the first ones so now there were about four or five of these things flying around, and they were much more aggressive than they usually are. Most of the time they just kind of hover and bumble and don't dive bomb you. But! One of these bees followed me out into the yard and buzzed my head when I tried to stay out of their way! I didn't think about it until a little later, when I heard one of the folks on TV talking about animal behavior during the eclipse. And sure enough, after the eclipse was over, those suckers were gone.
Also, I loved that weird supernatural darkness.
And! Since I had no filter for my camera, I used an old phone for the following picture which doesn't capture the excitement of the moment in the least:
So all in all, a 10/10 experience, would recommend (except the bees).

Animals I wish to see in Above and Beyond:
Alternate title: I Am Banging On Silvergate’s Door As We Speak /j
Bees!! because a bee model does in fact exist. I know this. They just need to use it /srs. Plus bees would make a really cute episode anyway- and when they finally do it I am willing to bet $9999 on it being a Vegimals episode.
Orchid mantis, or any kind of mantis really. Why? They are my favourite bug, next question-
Gynandromorph animal(s)!!! They're so cool—they're what happens when an animal with vastly different gender differences (think the harlequin ducks) is born intersex, and they look like Picasso paintings come to life. (it could also be a fun way to introduce a character with they/them pronouns-)
Parrots! (I know we got the mountain parrots but shh-) I desperately want a Pete-centered episode, and give him some friends while you're at it please.
Centipede! They’re literally just remipedes on land. Make it a Shellington episode and call it a day 👍
Snails. I love snails. They're the best mollusks, I am not accepting criticism.
Tarantula. Just because :)
Bunny. They showed an illustration of a non-anthro bunny in The Cold Snap and I have not felt peace since.
I’d gladly take a jackrabbit too; they’re not really rabbits (they’re hares), but if you’ve read that one post you’ll understand. It’s a Kwazii and Tweak episode.
Sammy The Falcon specifically. What is his deal???? They introduced him as Paani's living taxi and gave us ZERO context.
Maned wolves. Weirdos. (affectionate)
Moose. I will not elaborate further.
I’m down to see the chinstrap penguins again, or Ooju and Rocko—I think they should interact 👀
Ostrich?? Emu?? I have nothing else to say.
Ring-Tailed Lemur. They’re another one of my favourite animals, and I think the Wild Kratts fans would get a kick out of it. They deserve nice things.
Mole lizard. Look it up I DARE you. (cw if you're scared of snakes or worms) /nf

Would it be alright to ask you advice on curating my fandom experience? Regarding avoiding b///kshippers and the like, unfortunately. I don't know who else to ask, unless you or your followers know of someone? I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable.
I guess so, yeah! Would be easier if you're off anon, admittedly, or on discord or the like. I'm not sure what specific info I can give tbh?
I can give some general advice though
Block people if you don't like them, and mute/block terms you don't like. Use filters liberally.
This is the internet, things that should not exist unfortunately do, and we cannot change what others do. It's not worth your time and energy or mental health to try and change other's minds on this, i promise.
Personally, I prefer to block and mute individual people instead of filter tags or block terms. I'd rather catch and block the source, so I can keep certain people from interacting with my blogs or fics. Some people would simply rather not see anything at all, so block and filter anything associated with it. It's genuinely up to each person.
But remember this IS and will always be the internet. The unfortunate truth is that you WILL see stuff you don't want to, sometimes in the least likely of places. Sometimes people won't tag. Sometimes it'll ruin your day. But if you wanna engage with fandoms and media online, you have to know this, and you have to be able to decide when the risk is not worth it.
It sucks, it really sucks that this is how it is, but it is :(
But yeah! Know what works for you! Block people! Block tags! That's genuinely the best thing to do, and at the end of the day almost all you CAN do. At least it's a powerful tool.
Good luck anon! If you need more specific advice you can ask, though it's no guarantee i'll have an answer
(Oh, another thing I suggest is, if it's a fandom like submas that has big presences in other languages, if you cannot speak those languages find the tag for the ship or whatever it is you don't like IN THAT LANGUAGE and block it
In english, if I see ship art I don't want to see, I can easily read the tag and block the artist. In japanese, I cannot read the tags, so blocking the tags helps me not see it because as we all know, sometimes it's hard to recognize what's a ship art piece and what isn't!
It's not foolproof, but it definitely helps me avoid artists I cannot read the tags of, and find artists that don't create stuff like that! because I personally love finding cool art from all over the world, despite not being able to read it.)
