Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution adds PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC versions
Gematsu Source
Tumblr media
Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution will launch for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC via Steam alongside its previously announced Game Boy Advance version in 2024, developer WayForward announced.
Here is an overview of the game, via WayForward:
About
Originally created for the Game Boy Advance system before being put on hiatus midway through development, Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution will be completed after more than 20 years, and will be released digitally on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Steam in 2024, following the release of the previously announced Game Boy Advance-compatible game cartridge. Helmed by the original design team of Shantae creator Erin Bozon, series director Matt Bozon, and programmer Michael Stragey, Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution is the direct follow-up to the beloved original 2002 Shantae game. In this hair-whipping, belly-dancing action-adventure, Shantae’s nemesis, the nefarious pirate Risky Boots, has a “groundbreaking” new scheme that will leave Sequin Land spinning — by rotating the continent, she can move any town to the coast for easy plundering! As Shantae, players must turn the tectonic tables on Risky by rearranging the land itself… shifting, swapping, and moving between the foreground and background to navigate mix-and-match multilayered levels. As Shantae’s adventure unfolds, she’ll explore multiple towns and labyrinths, master six creature transformations, use a variety of magical attacks and items, battle fierce bosses, and meet friends like Rottytops, Sky, and Bolo—some of whom will be encountering each other for the first time. In addition to the single-player story mode, Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution also includes a local 4-player Battle Mode for the first time in the series. Furthermore, players can choose to experience the game with enhanced, HD character portraits and HUD elements, or play with the classic GBA pixel presentation fully intact in Legacy Mode. Following fan-favorite titles such as Shantae: Half-Genie Hero and Shantae and the Seven Sirens, Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution will be the sixth game released in the multi-million-selling Shantae series. In addition to the digital version, a physical edition of Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution will be offered on select platforms from Limited Run Games in 2024. Further information, including details on the preorder window, will be made available in the months ahead.

SHANTAE - What if the Sirens Had Dialogue?
So uh. I didn't think too much would come from that headcanon post I made about the Seven Sirens (right here if you haven't seen it already) but typing that all out got me inspired so
Transcript of what some hypothetical dialogue before their boss fights for Water Lily, Coral, Tubeworm, Angler, and Octo would look like based on what I proposed in that headcanon post! Enjoy!
UPDATE: this is fucking real now
[SHANTAE enters the darkened chamber where Water Lily Siren rests, looking around in confusion]
SHANTAE: Huh...this is weird. What the heck is this place? I thought poking around might give me some clues, but all I'm getting is the creeps.
SHANTAE: I don't see any SOURCE OF EVIL in here. I better-
[Something starts to rustle by Shantae's feet]
SHANTAE: Huh?
~~~~
[Cue the animated cutscene]
~~~~
WATER LILY: Oh my. Is it that time already?
SHANTAE: GAH! You're, uh-I mean-What's going on here!? What are you? And what did you do with Plink?
WATER LILY: Poor thing...you really have no idea what's happening, do you? I can't say I'm privy to all the machinations going on beneath us, but I can at least tell you this:
WATER LILY: I am a SIREN. We seven are the true rulers of this island, watching from the waters below.
WATER LILY: Five of us watch over our own domains...
WATER LILY: One of us is nowhere to be seen...
WATER LILY: And the last is the one pulling the strings.
SHANTAE: So you SIRENS are the reason why Plink was in that weird cage! Is everyone else in one too!?
WATER LILY: Plink, Plink...you keep saying that name, whoever could you be...
WATER LILY: OH! You're talking about the SEER, aren't you? I do hope you let her out - I only ever saw her once, but goodness, that cage looked cold.
WATER LILY: Just thinking about it makes my leaves shiver...
SHANTAE: ...
SHANTAE: ...you're nice for a kidnapper. Like, SUSPICIOUSLY nice. There's something else going on here, isn't there?
WATER LILY: !!!
WATER LILY: Ah. Perceptive, aren't you? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to expose my true colors so much...I've made this next part so much harder for the both of us.
Shantae: "Next part?"
[The screen starts to shake]
WATER LILY: Yes, next part. I'm truly sorry for this, but if I don't destroy you...well. It's nothing you would be concerned with.
WATER LILY: If it's any consolation, I'll make it quick.
~~~~
[SHANTAE wriggles her way out of some wires and gets into the room]
SHANTAE: Yeesh, talk about an electrical hazard! That's gotta violate so many safety regulations...
???: Hee hee hee...
SHANTAE: Huh?
???: Yes, yes, you'll do nicely...
SHANTAE: Who's there? Show yourself!
???: For my FIELD TEST!
[The room illuminates, revealing CORAL SIREN on top of her mech]
SHANTAE: Who are you!?
CORAL: SIREN. Duh. I thought blabbermouth back there told you everything already; you got a goldfish for a brain or something?
SHANTAE: Hey, that's no way to talk about a friend! That plant girl was really nice!
CORAL: Yeah, and look where that got her. If she wanted to be nice, she should've gone full goody-goody instead of going with half-measures. Probably would've been nicer for her, anyway.
CORAL: But enough about her! Let's talk about YOU! And that MAGIC you got there!
CORAL: Spiny's readings don't lie, that magic you've got is real impressive. And that's without counting those additions, like the fusion coins, and...ooo, is that a bit of SEER MAGIC right there?
CORAL: Oh, you cheeky little scoundrel!
SHANTAE: For your information, Plink GAVE her magic to me! Not like...whatever you're doing with the others!
CORAL: "Whatever we're doing?" Oh, please, it's not that vague! Not my fault you can't understand my designs.
SHANTAE: YOU'RE the one who made those cages?
CORAL: Again - duh. I'm the technician around here. Or was the giant mech not enough of a clue for you?
SHANTAE: Ooooh, you're really asking for it now!
CORAL: Now we're getting to the good part! I've been DYING to test this baby out...and I just so happen to have orders to destroy you. Not really my thing, but if it means I get to test out my new mech...
CORAL: Heh. Nothing personal, but you'll make for great target practice.
CORAL: Let's see who's better - half-genie, or machine! BOMBS AWAY!
~~~~
[Cue the animated cutscene]
~~~~
[SHANTAE enters the room, and the sliding door shuts closed behind her]
SHANTAE: Yup, this looks like a SIREN den alright...and it looks like she's pulling the shadow act, too.
SHANTAE: HEY! Come on out! We both know how this-
???: Grrwl....
SHANTAE: -goes...?
~~~~
[Cue the animated cutscene]
~~~~
TUBEWORM: ...
SHANTAE: Uh...nice snake-things?
TUBEWORM: Hmph. Where did all that bravado go, little half-genie? Weren't you raring for a fight? Or was that BEFORE you saw you had an actual challenge?
SHANTAE: Well, excuse ME for getting caught a little off-guard by your creepy snake legs!
TUBEWORMS: BARK BARK! BARK BARK!
TUBEWORM: They are TUBEWORMS, half-genie. You'd do well to remember that in what little time you have left.
SHANTAE: I'm no marine expert, but I'm pretty sure tubeworms aren't supposed to have teeth like that.
SHANTAE: And you're one to talk about over-confidence! This isn't my first adventure, you know, and I've already beaten two of the others! What makes you so confident, huh?
TUBEWORM: Simple. The first you beat was too soft - she was never meant to be in a real fight. The second was a technician - her reliance on her machines was her downfall.
TUBEWORM: But I? I am a TRUE WARRIOR! My family served the SEVENTH for generations, and I am no exception. I remember when we were free from this wretched prison...
TUBEWORM: You should've seen it, little half-genie. The armies I commanded, the battles I fought! We SIRENS were the terrors of the sea! All the surface-dwellers cowered at our name!
TUBEWORM: But now...we're stuck HERE. Rotting in this accursed undersea grave...all thanks to HER.
SHANTAE: "HER?" Who are you talking about?
TUBEWORM: Hmph! What does it matter to you, half-genie? Soon enough, you'll be rotting with us!
~~~~
[Cue the animated cutscene]
~~~~
ANGLER: Boo.
SHANTAE: Don't do that!
ANGLER: Why shouldn't I? Might as well get in a laugh before this big fight or whatever.
SHANTAE: ...you don't really sound that thrilled about it.
ANGLER: The only one of us who REALLY wanted to fight you was big and scaly.
ANGLER: Green's hands were tied, thanks to HER. Bolts-for-brains probably would've been just as glad testing out her mech on some random goon.
ANGLER: And Tentacles? Ugh. Hope you don't have to deal with that.
SHANTAE: Huh. Well, in that case, maybe we could talk a little first? Getting answers out of Risky is like pulling teeth.
ANGLER: Eh, I'm not really supposed to talk to you...but whatever. You're just gonna beat me up anyway, not like the punishment will be worse. Why not?
SHANTAE: Talk about moody. So, uh, first things first - do you know anything about that lobster girl?
ANGLER: !!!
SHANTAE: I saw her looking from the portholes before, and then she saved me and my friend from-uh. You okay there?
ANGLER: ...that IDIOT, what is she doing, if she gets caught, ..!?!....
SHANTAE: Hey, those are the same noises I heard her make! She IS a SIREN! Is that your native language or something?
ANGLER: Shut up.
SHANTAE: Hey, that's-
ANGLER: SHUT UP. You only told me about this, right?
SHANTAE: Uh...you're the only SIREN I've talked to about lobster girl. I mean, besides you, there's Sky, since she was there, and-
ANGLER: Great, just what I needed. More work after this...
SHANTAE: After what? What are you doing!?
ANGLER: You wanted to know if I knew about the "lobster girl," right? Well, I do. We were good friends, once. Before SHE - the SEVENTH - took it away.
ANGLER: And if the seventh finds out my friend was helping surface dwellers...it'll be her head that's lost this time. I can't afford to let you blab about it.
SHANTAE: Wait, hold on! It doesn't have to be this way! You can help us! We could talk this out-
ANGLER: Be quiet.
~~~~
[SHANTAE enters the chamber, and the door closes behind her]
SHANTAE: Hmm...no Siren. Just these weird pillars.
SHANTAE: Why do I get this weird feeling of deja vu?
[The screen starts to shake]
SHANTAE: Woah! No time for questions - looks like I've got a big one this time!
~~~~
[Cue the animated cutscene]
~~~~
SHANTAE: ...
SHANTAE: What...the...HECK!?
SHANTAE: How'd you get in there!?
OCTO: It's marvelous what this island's sealife is capable of, is it not? You should know - from what I've heard, you've had first-hand experience.
SHANTAE: Yeah, I do. And...look, I talked to that anglerfish girl earlier. Just going off the pattern - you don't want to fight me, right?
OCTO: You're right. I don't. As the empress' personal assistant, such trivial matters are beneath me - I'd rather leave it to my servants, like this fellow here. Isn't that right?
CRANIALPOD: Grrwl...
SHANTAE: Empress...? The SEVENTH SIREN!
OCTO: Ah, yes, I've heard that name for her before. From the lips of that accursed genie, if I recall...and some of my fellow Sirens seem to have latched onto it, unfortunately.
OCTO: You surface-dwellers are quite atrocious at nicknames.
SHANTAE: Yeah, well, you guys are really bad at giving out names! I still don't have a real name for like, any of you...
SHANTAE: And-wait, you're her personal assistant?
OCTO: Assuming you mean the Empress, yes. Did my gloriousness just now sink in?
SHANTAE: I...you know what? I've got to say something.
OCTO: Hmm?
SHANTAE: I've talked with the other Sirens before, and...no offense, your Empress sounds TERRIBLE! Not just to the people of the surface, but you guys too!
SHANTAE: Plant girl, the anglerfish, lobster girl...all of them have felt pain at her hands.
SHANTAE: As far as I can tell, the only Sirens she didn't mistreat are the one who built her toys, the one who lead her armies, and you. The ones who had a direct use for her.
SHANTAE: How can you be okay with this? How can you be okay with serving a queen who causes her own people suffering?
OCTO: ...
CRANIALPOD: ...
OCTO: ...it is not my place to judge the methods of the crown. And it's not your place either, half-genie. Come, my servants! Dispose of this nuisance at once!

Apple Arcade standout ‘Assemble With Care’ is coming to PC next year
Assemble With Care, one of our favorite Apple Arcade games, is making its way to PC. Developer UsTwo (Monument Valley) says it'll be available on Steam sometime in the first quarter of 2020.
It's a puzzle-solving game in which you're tasked with repairing various gadgets and items, with a story running through the entire thing. You'll need to disassemble each object, figure out what's not working, fix it and piece it all back together. The items are typically less complex than their real-life counterparts, but that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable or satisfying to repair them.
Before we close the studio for Christmas, we're working to release #AssembleWithCare on PC in Q1 2020!! We'll let you know more when we come back but you can wishlist it here: https://t.co/VUgeaw2onH pic.twitter.com/QvC83mRgXf
— ustwo games (@ustwogames) December 23, 2019
Apple Arcade games aren't available elsewhere on mobile (i.e. Android or the App Store) or any other subscription service. Consoles and PC are fair game, though. Several other titles are out on or coming to consoles or PC, including What The Golf?, Sayonara Wild Hearts and Shantae and the Seven Sirens. Apple Arcade is still great value, but it's good that some of its best games are available elsewhere too.

Shantae 5 Is Now Shantae And The Seven Sirens: Here Are The First Details
Shantae 5 is now officially named Shantae and the Seven Sirens. WayForward has revealed some new details about the next Shantae game, and dropped some screens to give fans a taste of the upcoming game’s gorgeous visuals. The fifth game in the long-running series was announced back in March, but little information has been available until now.
The game has been unveiled on Wayforward’s website. It will send Shantae and her friends to a tropical island, where they’ll meet several other half-genies. Of course, things won’t go smoothly, and the eponymous half-genie will find herself tussling with numerous enemies. Some first-look screenshots are below.
The game promises to feature all new dance abilities and Fusion Magic, as well as a nonlinear world to explore. There will also be a collectible card system, which will let players change Shantae’s abilities. The game will support 4K resolution on systems that can handle it, and will feature numerous minigames, hidden secrets, and “gorgeously animated TV-style cutscenes.”
Shantae and the Seven Sirens is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Apple Arcade, and a release date has not been announced yet – it’s not clear whether it will release in 2019 or not. The last game in the series was 2016’s Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. In his 8/10 review, Jason D’Aprile called the game “a delightful experience”.
