Kon: Clark, did you read the Smallville Mischief Report today?
Clark: The what?
Jon: Smallville Mischief. It's the section of the newspaper that reports all the crimes that have happened in town the past week. It names names and everything.
Clark: That could cause a lot of trouble.
Lois: It doesn't. No one reads it but these two knuckleheads.
Clark: The people of Smallville respect each other's privacy. If someone wants to commit a crime, that's their business.
Kon: It's interesting you would say that, Clark, considering what I just read. Ahem. "This weekend, someone knocked down "Vera Warren's British chimney sweep garden gnome. A single boot was left on her lawn."
Clark: Oh, that's one of the most famous garden gnomes in town. When you press a button on it, it says, "'Ello, gardener."
Kon: "Vera believes the boot belongs to... Clark Kent."
Everyone: *gasping*

The Talon having a "Smallville's best Cappuccino" sign has me thinking how many other coffee shops this town has. Wasn't there only one, and Lana got it shut down? That was a whole plot point?
Either there are more (and Smallville is definitely not as small as it wants us to believe) or Lana just noticed she got "best everything" by default and decided to capitalize on it. I respect that, by the way.

The Cryptid of Smallville Ch. 2
I’m impaitent and the second chap of the fic is already up on AO3 so here we go! I’m almost done with chapter 3 so we’ll see if I manage to finish it before the month is out. I’m going to start posting wips and prompt ideas and rambles in the next week.
Here’s chapter 2! Danny makes some new friends (:
______________________________________________________________
One thing about living in a town where the primary source of income is farming is that you hear a lot of superstitions about what happens in the fields at night. Farmer’s from every generation will tell you not to look into the fields at night. Don’t go runnin’ through the fields at dusk and definitely not after dark. There are things out there that don’t like it when folks poke around.
This, of course, led to Danny poking around.
He figured he’s probably scarier than any of the “things” out there and maybe he can find someone spooky to commiserate about death with.
He’s been here around three months now, and the Kent’s finally started taking him out in public more often and so while Martha or Jon or Clark are doing errands, Danny hears things and can’t help but feel fascinated. Are most of these stories just feral dogs or foxes or something out in the fields hunting for the night? Probably. Does that mean he’s not going to bother to go out there? No.
This leads to Danny’s current predicament. The problem with having someone else with powers in the house is that they usually can tell when someone else is getting up to mischief. This is especially irritating when said other superpowered individual has super hearing and is a stickler for rules. Clark is holding Danny by the ankle right outside of Danny’s second story window, because of course, he also can fly.
“Oh come on Clark! I just want to see if there’s any other people like me out there, and they only come out at night. I swear I won’t complain about homework or going to school again for a week if you let me go!”
Clark just raised an eyebrow, somehow giving the effect of crossing his arms without doing so. Clark may only be twelve, but he also knows to not go out into the fields at night.
Danny goes limp when he realizes his offer isn’t getting him anywhere. He sighs really big and then gets an idea. “If you let me go, I’ll help you with that astronomy assignment for your science class and I’ll teach you all of the constellations?” he offers. Clark seems to debate this for a moment. Danny gives him puppy dog eyes. Clark’s expression softens.
“Fine, but I’m keeping an ear out and if I hear anything like you being in trouble, I’ll come out there and grab you, got it?” He tried to put on his most serious face. Clark was used to having to be the strict one among his friend group, but he also had a soft spot for Danny. The kid seemed pretty chill all the time and didn’t have an issue with using his powers at all, but also seemed a bit melancholy, staring off into space or turning to say something to someone who wasn’t there. There are names he would mutter in his sleep, Jazz, Sam, Tucker, Ellie and of course Mom and Dad. If he thought there might be people from his dimension, why not let him go talk to them.
Danny frantically nodded his head and swiftly righted himself and took off towards the fields.
Clark sighed, crossed his arms and sat on the roof facing the fields. He may let him go talk to the things, but he’s gonna keep an ear out for the kid that’s getting to be a bit like a younger brother to him.
*****
Danny prowled through the fields invisible and intangible until he heard rustling. Making his way towards the sound, he caught sight of a rabbit with it’s foot caught in twine. He sighed, letting his ghostliness drop as he went to help the poor creature.
As he knelt down, he gasped out some light blue fog and heard chuckling from right behind him.
“Don’t you know not to come out at night little boy?” a voice that sounded like the earth rumbling sneered out behind him.
Danny smirked. “Eh, I don’t think I’m your average meal though.” He stood and turned around, looking up at the creature. It appeared to be an emaciated werewolf with glowing red eyes, moss green fur and the exposed skin was deep red and stretched across the bones. “Weird, you reek of death, but also don’t seem to be made entirely of ectoplasm. Maybe you’re existing on something besides just ectoplasm? Let’s see, what’s your normal meal? Is it flesh or just fear?” Danny let his eyes glow as he floated up to be eye level with the creature. “What are you called by the way? Do you even have a name, or are you just called ‘Thing’? I think I’ll call you Jeff, you look like a Jeff.”
The creature froze when his eyes started glowing green and tilted it’s head to the side like a confused dog. “You smell dead child. Are you a new Thing? You obviously aren’t like the meat bags who live around here.”
“Oh, Hi, I’m Danny! I’m half ghost, so I’m half dead. What other Things are out here? Are they all like you, or are there different kinds? I’m assuming different kinds because you implied that I’d just be another one. Do you know any others? Can you take me to them?” Danny got excited and floated up close to the creature’s face.
“Hello Danny, I suppose I could tell you. I have no name, but there are others who have chosen names for themselves. There are banshees, shriekers, the Corn Children, more like me that are various animals, we have no name, but are the combined fear of animals in their dying moments. I survive from flesh and fear, though it can sustain me for ages. I eat when opportunity presents itself. Come child, I shall introduce you to those within the bounds of this place.”
Danny cheered and jumped onto Jeff’s back as they made their way through the fields.
*****
Later, Clark found Danny sitting around the hole he landed in talking to things that are from nightmares. He hovered closer and cleared his throat. The creatures froze and started to fade into the corn.
“Oh hi Clark! See my new friends?” Danny smiled from where he was curled under a creature that looked like a huge zombie dog with horrifically elongated limbs. Next to them was what appeared to be humanoid wrapped in rags with long black hair and a pair of identical pale toddlers holding each other’s hands in matching overalls. Some scaly thing that looked like a lizard turtle with tusks and a mane had vanished into the dirt.
“Child, I believe it is time for us to go. We will meet you when you wish, just appear here and one of us will find you. Thank you for making your presence known, it was nice to meet an Other. Now you must do as the meat bag children do and rest for you also must stay among them. Farewell child.” With that Jeff stood, nodded to Clark, and disappeared into the corn, the banshee and the children following.
Clark flew down to Danny and picked him up. “So, that was more terrifying than I expected. I thought you were just going to come across some foxes or a stray dog or something. I’m not sure how I feel knowing that the stories are true and there really are Things out here.” Clark moved to hold Danny bridal style as the kid curled into his shoulder and yawned. He flew them back to the house, it was well after midnight by now.
“I like Jeff, and Tony, and Bess, and Tim and Tom. They’re nice and they said they’d keep the fields safe for me.” Danny yawned huge as Clark set him down in his bed. “Don’t worry, they won’t let anyone else bother the Kent farm or your family. They like me.” Danny rolled over and almost immediately started snoring. Clark sighed and tucked Danny in, then made his way to his room, wondering if he could get to sleep after seeing those creatures.
_____________________________________________________________
I know the creatures here are not exactly real cryptids, but I wasn’t sure which ones are okay to use without accidentally hurting people so I kinda made my own! What hijinks do you think Danny will get up no next? Will he drag Clark into it? Who knows! I’m writing this as it comes to me!

Merlin BBC UK TV Show - A Psychological Analysis Series Part 13
The Meaning Of Pendragon In The TV Show
The 3 prominent characters in the TV show who bear the Pendragon last name are Uther, Arthur and Morgana.
Tumblr media
The name has its origin in the Old Welsh language
Tumblr media
The Arthurian legends were mainly written in the medieval age.
However Arthur's literary origins lie in the Dark ages.
The TV creators have already stated it was their intention to reinterpret Arthurian legends using a modern Smallville format which is modern American in its narrative.
Source:
Even though the TV show does not specify the time period it is set in, it uses a lot of medieval imagery such as plated armor, chain mail, carriages etc.. which were all medieval inventions.
So this dark age last name used within a medieval world but portrayed through a modern 21st century American narrative takes a whole new meaning.
Tumblr media
The show also gives us a literal meaning to Pendragon as Uther even sent a dragon to the pen ( Kilgaragh is imprisoned underneath the cavern of Camelot )
Here the name takes the overtures of being a TYRANT.
______________________________________________________________
Uther:
Tumblr media
He fits the classic definition of a tyrant.
I don't even have to list all of Uther's crimes because Merlin as Dragoon literally calls him a tyrant to his face listing all his misdeeds in the following clip:
youtube
It is Uther who lends his last name to Morgana and Arthur and all the baggage that comes with it.
______________________________________________________________
Morgana:
Tumblr media
It is very telling that the moment Morgana realizes that Uther is her father, she rejects Uther as she does not want to associate with what Uther Pendragon represents.
However the Pendragon traits soon manifests within her as she undergoes the tragic transformation from being a brave and loyal friend who helped a lowly servant by going to his village and helping him defend it to being this embittered villainess who shows dictatorial traits.
Her struggle for self acceptance as a magical being and protesting against the persecution of magic users soon manifests as a crusade against the non magical users based on revenge.
The Pendragon legacy here acts as a genetic pathological mental illness that is triggered through grief and betrayal. Morgana being poisoned by Merlin being the trigger for Morgana as Ygraine's death was for Uther.
Tumblr media
______________________________________________________________
Arthur:
Tumblr media
Uther is the typical distant and repressive fatherly figure who has channeled all his hopes and emotions on his sole male heir i.e. Arthur.
Arthur had a strict military training who is only allowed to show his masculine, aggressive side
Tumblr media
Unlike Morgana, Arthur constantly feels the pressure to live up to Pendragon name. The Sword in the Stone: Part 1 and 2 episodes perfectly highlights Arthur's insecurities.
Merlin who is privy to Arthur's psyche more than anyone in the series, has seen the Pendragon rage manifest in Arthur such as:
Arthur willing to kill Uther (Refer Episode: The Sins of the Father)
Arthur banishing Gwen under the punishment of death (Refer Episode: Lancelot Du Lac)
Arthur vowing vengeance against Agravaine (Refer Episode: The Sword in the Stone Part 1)
Arthur vows to punish Dragoon after Uther dies (Refer Episode: The Wicked Day)
In all the above situations, it is Merlin who provides counsel and/or emotional support to Arthur to exercise prudence and not give in to his rage.
IT IS ONE OF THE KEY REASON WHY MERLIN DOES NOT REVEAL HIS MAGIC TO ARTHUR UNTILL THE VERY END !!!
youtube
The dialogue in the scene above is very revealing.
ARTHUR: Why did you never tell me?
MERLIN: I wanted to but...
ARTHUR: What?
MERLIN: You would have chopped my head off.
ARTHUR: I am not sure what I would have done
MERLIN: I did not want to put you in that position
ARTHUR: That's what worried you
Merlin knows the trigger for Pendragon rage is betrayal and grief.
Merlin knows it was his betrayal of Morgana that lead her down a dark path.
Tumblr media
Had Merlin revealed his magic to Arthur earlier he would never have earned Arthur's trust to be in a position to counsel him during his darkest moments.
Merlin being the other half of Arthur as stated by Kilgaragh acts a superego for Arthur trying to counterbalance his aggressive Pendragon tendencies .
Kilgaragh had told Merlin it was his mission to mold Arthur into being a great king. (Refer Episode: Dragons' Call)
Merlin's influence on Arthur is really exemplified in the episode "Death Song Of Uther Pendragon" , where Arthur confronts Uther:
youtube
Merlin then confronts Uther's ghost, reiterating that Arthur is indeed very unlike Uther.
Tumblr media
This episode ends with Arthur rejecting Uther and what Uther stands for, by blowing the Horn of Cathbhadh and sending Uther back to the spirit realm.
Tumblr media
______________________________________________________________
In Conclusion:
It was a masterful stroke by the series creators to have Morgana and Arthur introduced to the audience in contrasting light. (Refer Episode: Dragons' Call)
Morgana is shown distressed as a man is executed by Uther for being a sorcerer whereas Arthur is seen bullying one of his squires.
The audience is only privy to the information that Arthur is Uther's son and Morgana is unrelated to Uther resulting in the viewer sympathizing with Morgana and rooting against Arthur.
However as the series progresses and as Morgana's identity is revealed. We see her succumb to the Pendragon traits despite her abject hatred of Uther . Whereas Arthur ultimately rejects Uther and Uther's ideology despite constantly seeking his validation throughout the series.
Morgana ( Hero to Villan ) and Arthur's ( Villan To Hero) character arc ends up in complete opposite directions from where they began.
Both characters are scarred by trauma, loss and betrayals they have experienced compounded by the less than stellar parenting of Uther Pendragon.
It is very poignant that the series ends with Gwen on the throne and not a Pendragon signifying a new future for Camelot.

Senior Prom would be in two months, and tickets had gone on sale today. You didn’t plan on going, maybe just with a couple friends if you did.
Meanwhile Jason knew exactly who he was planning to ask—you.
He’d been talking to you in history class this past year and he really wanted to go out with you. You liked him, sure, but you didn’t think he saw you that way.
“Y/n,” Jason said quietly, drawing your attention away from the lecturing teacher. “Who’re you going to prom with?”
“Oh, I’m not going,” you told him, matching his tone.
“Like…you don’t have someone to go with? Or you just don’t want to go?”
You shrugged. “Don’t really wanna go. Why?” you asked. “Do you want help asking someone?”
“Uh…no.”
“Really? I thought you’d be one of those guys to go all out when you ask someone; signs, flowers, maybe the marching band backing you up,” you laughed a little.
“Is that something girls like?”
“Depends on the girl, who’re you asking?”
“Y/n, is there something you and Jason would like to share with the class?” the teacher interrupted your quiet conversation.
“No,” you replied.
“Sorry, Mr. Bernard,” Jason added, feeling guilty for you being scolded. “Won’t happen again.”
You both knew Jason was lying, he loved distracting you from taking notes and would definitely continue to do so.
**
It was lunch time and you were eating quietly in the cafeteria when Jason came over and took the empty seat across from you.
“Whatcha doing?” he asked, a smirk on his face.
“Cartwheels,” you replied sarcastically before taking another bite of the sandwich you were working on.
“Were you serious in class today?” he asked, ignoring your sarcasm. “Do you think if I asked someone with a sign and flowers and music that she’d, you know…say yes?”
“Depends on the girl, Jason.” You shrugged a little. “Who’re you asking?”
“I don’t want to say,” he said, you narrowed your eyes a little. “I don’t want her to feel pressured into saying ‘yes’ so I’m not telling anyone who I’m asking.”
“That’s surprisingly really sweet.” You smiled a little.
“So, do you think I should make a big deal about asking? Or just be super casual about it?”
“I think most of the girls here like the big promposals. You know; big sign standing outside her window with a boombox, or in front of her friends with a bouquet of flowers, stuff like that. But, again, it really depends on the girl; some girls might say ‘no’ because you asked them publicly.”
“Uh, huh.” Jason nodded a little, biting the inside of his cheek. “Thanks, Y/n.”
He started eating the food on his tray, and you furrowed your brows a little.
“Do you need today’s notes or something?” you asked, a slight laugh in your voice.
“From History class?” he asked, his cheeks full. You nodded. “No, why?”
“Jason, you never eat lunch with me,” you scoffed a little. “The last time you sat with me at lunch was the week leading up to our mid-term and you wanted help studying.”
“I just felt like hanging out with you,” he shrugged a little, “but…do you want me to go?” he asked hesitantly.
“No, I was just a little confused is all.” You took another bite, Jason furrowing his brows but continuing to eat.
There was a couple minutes of semi-awkward silence until you broke it.
“Your football buddies are coming over,” you mumbled. “I’m gonna head to class early, I’ll see you later Jason.” You stood up and took your tray with you to the trash; dumping the remains of your sandwich and leaving the tray on top of the can.
Jason watched as you left the cafeteria, not really listening to what his teammates were saying as they crowded around the table and took their seats.
**
For the next week-or-so Jason kept asking you for advice about the promposal he was planning. You kept telling him it depends on the girl he’s asking and he should be talking to her. (You really could be completely oblivious at times.)
You were walking out to your car when you noticed the crowd of people surrounding the front of the school.
“Y/n!” Jason said over a megaphone.
“Oh fuck no,” you groaned. You walked closer and saw what everyone was looking at. Jason was standing in the center with a few football players; each holding a sign with a word that together made up ‘Y/n will you go to prom with me?’ in all caps. You smiled at the sight, Jason’s smile growing when he saw you.
“So, do you wanna go to prom with me?” he asked, no longer speaking into the device in his hand.
You looked around at the people now staring at you. The smile on your face slowly faded as what was happening really sank in. You walked over to Jason.
“Jason, you’re really sweet,” you started, his smile fading, “but this? This is not something that would make me want to go out with you? And the fact you did all this even after all I said about knowing the girl you’re asking just proves you don’t actually know me! I’m sorry, but no. Ask someone you actually know and not someone you pity and you think would be an easy lay.”
You didn’t wait for his response, you just walked away.
“Damn it,” he mumbled.
Thank god there would be two whole days before you’d have to face Jason and the embarrassment of what just happened.
**
“Y/n, wake up!” your mom called from your bedroom door.
“It’s Saturday!” you grumbled.
“There’s a boy at the door and I think you should maybe go talk to him before your dad scares him off.”
That sure woke you up. You hurried out of bed and got dressed in the first presentable outfit you could find. You checked the mirror, thankful that your hair didn’t look too bad and went downstairs.
“Hey, Jason.” You smiled a little when you saw him. He was carrying a bouquet of flowers and was clearly scared of your dad.
“You know this guy?” your dad asked, you nodded.
“Yeah, he’s in my class at school,” you replied.
“Mh, hm.” He narrowed his gaze at Jason before leaving and letting you talk.
“What uh, what are you doing here?” you asked him.
“For the record, I originally planned to ask you when it was just the two of us. I was gonna bring you flowers,” he held them up, “and just ask if you wanted to go to prom with me. But, after talking to you this past week I got really scared about it and thought maybe you were hinting you wanted a big ‘promposal’ as you called it.”
“Jason-”
“I have like a whole speech planned so before you reject me, at least let me finish,” he stopped you from interrupting him. “I don’t pity you. This isn’t an act of pity. And I did not for one fucking second think you were a quote easy lay unquote. I think you’re really cool and fun to talk to and be around and yeah, you being gorgeous is definitely a plus but that’s not the main reason I like you.” That made you giggle a little. “If you don’t want to go to prom, I get it. But, could I please take you out to dinner?”
“Jason, I would love to go out with you.” You smiled.
“Really?” His face lit up.
“Yeah, really. I really like you and talking to you is like the highlight of my life. You being adorable is definitely a plus but you’re also ridiculously sweet so, yes I’d like to go out with you.”
“You think I’m adorable?” he asked, his smile growing and his tounge barely peeking out between his teeth.
“Shut up!” You rolled your eyes, still smiling widely.
There was a comfortable silence for a moment as you looked at each other.
“Oh, these are for you, obviously” he handed you the bouquet he was holding. “I remember you saying you really liked these kinds of flowers so…”
“My god these are beautiful!” you said when you took them from him. “Thank you, Jason.”
“You are very welcome.” He beamed. “So when can I take you out?’
“I’m free tonight?”
“Perfect!” He bent down and kissed your cheek. “I will be back here to pick you up at…five?” You nodded, indicating that time worked for you. “Great! I’ll see you tonight then!” He turned to leave.
“Jason,” you called and he turned back to look at you, “don’t overthink it, nothing fancy, okay? I’m happy just spending time with you.”
“You just made my job that much easier sweetheart.” He smiled back.
