'Otherside Picnic' Manga Adaptation Second Volume Now in English
On August 23, Square Enix Manga released the second volume in Eita Mizuno's manga adaptation of the sci-fi horror Yuri series Otherside Picnic (Urasekai Picnic). The manga is available digitally and in paperback editions.
Tumblr media
The publisher describes Otherside Picnic Volume 2:
When Sorawo and Toriko undertake another foray into the Otherside via a Shinjuku pub and lose their way, Kisaragi Station awaits them. The unarmed pair gets into trouble, only to be saved by a mysterious band of soldiers. As the girls soon discover, the soldiers are American marines stationed in Japan who found their way into the Otherside from their Okinawan base and have been making camp at Kisaragi themselves, unable to find a way home. Will Sorawo and Toriko be able to escape the eerie station?!
Otherside Picnic is based on the novel series of the same by Iori Miyazawa. It follows college student Sorawo, who discovers a mysterious parallel world known as "the Otherside." There, she encounters dangerous monsters and cryptids from internet creepypastas and a skilled adventurer, Toriko. Together, Sorawo and Toriko team up to brave the horrors of the Otherside and unravel its secrets.
The novels are published in Japanese by Hayakawa Publishing and in English by J-Novel club. The books received critical praise for including horror and science fiction elements, their characters, and the story's pacing. They are illustrated by shirakaba.
Eita Mizuno's manga adaptation began serialization in Monthly Shounen Gangan in early 2018. Eight volumes are published in Japanese, the third of which is scheduled for English releases this December.
Tumblr media
An anime adaptation of Otherside Picnic aired between January and March of 2021. Takuya Sato directed it at Liden Films and Felix Films. The series received mixed reviews. It was praised for its premise and voice acting, but critics noted its inconsistent animation and poor storytelling, especially the toning down of the source material's horror elements. The anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.

Sasameki Koto was an influential read for me as a young lesbian, I haven't gone back and read it in a long while but the ending pops up in my train of a thought a lot because of how hopeful I remember it being, despite catching the bouquet at the wedding Sumika and Kazama can't get married because of the law in Japan, and there's hope In that ending that things will eventually get better and that they will be able to eventually
I have just been made aware of the fact Sasameki Koto was written by a man, this has made me question the status I should hold it at now because I did really love it but it is possible that my memory is failing me and its not as good as I remeber or I just thought it was good because it was one of the first pieces of queer media I consumed

As promised, some non-Yagakimi content for a change.
My favorite anime so far this season -- the only one I’m dying to see the latest episode as soon as it comes out -- is definitely Wonder Egg Priority.
Despite the somewhat weird name (it makes ... some ... sense in context) this anime original tackles a lot of issues we’ve come to expect from coming of age magical girl shows: bullying, up to and including suicide, expectations of others, eating disorders, sexuality, to name but a few.
Now, every somewhat gritty magical girls show will bring to mind Madoka Magica. This world’s Kyuubey is actually two people, called Acca and Ura-Acca (lit. Counter-Acca). Acca as a name itself could be a pun on a few things, all of them promising nothing good (e.g. 悪化 = corruption or 悪果 = bad results). Maybe it’s just a reference to ACCA, which director Wakabayashi Shin also did some directing work for.
And yet, despite all that, Wonder Egg comes across as less despair-focused than Madomagi was. It’s not quite as playful with its themes as classics like Sailor Moon or CCS might be, but it’s definitely much less drab than I would have expected, just given the premise. So it’s serious without trying to be edgy; a welcome change in this sub-sub-genre post 2011.
The fact that it’s an original helps, of course. If there’s no source material to adapt, everybody starts off on the same footing. Add into that that CloverWorks so far has done a fantastic job with animating an extremely colorful and on the face of it happy and functional world, with the instances of CGI much less grating than the stark contrasts between traditional animation and 3D in competitor Urasekai Picnic.
Add into that very promising voice acting from newcomer Aikawa Kanata-san for protagonist Ohto Ai-san and the fact that the main four came together for a rendition of 巣立ちの歌, a song nowadays mostly sung at graduation ceremonies, underscoring the growing up part of the story, and it’s actually a banger, and we’ve got ourselves a show! (If you want to know more about the OP, I’ve written about it and posted a rough translation here.)
I think I’ve kept this relatively spoiler free so far. And really, there isn’t that much to say yet, after episode 3 just aired and ended on a huge cliff-hanger, with all episodes so far introducing both characters and the worlds they’re living and dreaming in.
You can expect a more spoiler-y deep dive after next episode, so watch out for that!

Otherside Picnic, Vol. 6
By Iori Miyazawa and shirakaba. Released in Japan as “Urasekai Picnic” by Hayakawa Bunko JA. Released in North America by J-Novel Club. Translated by Sean McCann.
After starting the series off showing us a terrifying, lethal, transforming Otherside, it is somewhat amusing to see that the parts of this book that actually do take place in the Otherside are the most relaxed. Essentially, Sorawo and Toriko decide to settle in and do some dry-walling, and they have a great deal of fun. They don’t have any terrifying experiences there because the real world, and the space between the real world and the Otherside, is scary enough as it is. Starting the book off with a Sorawo who seems to be a normal, non-urban legend loving college student, the book takes off running as our heroes battle T-san, a man dressed like a monk whose features seem to invite unreliable narration. Akari gets involved as well, and before we know it we’re dealing with someone who is perfectly happy to walk into their psychiatric hospital/prison and wreak havoc. This is Otherside Picnic: the Movie, kids, so buckle up for a roller coaster ride of thrills.
As you may have guessed, this book is one long story, involving a young (?) man (?) who is tall (?) and wears monk’s robes (?) and is currently in Sorawo’s college seminar. As I noted above, at the start of the book Sorawo has amnesia, her “Otherside” eye is not working, and she’s rather startled by these other two girls who seem to know her. That thankfully gets resolved quickly, and we’re back to our normal Sorawo who insists that she doesn’t really care about other people even if her actions belie this quite a bit. T-san the Templeborn is another urban legend, though the author, who I already suspect is making up all of their ‘cited sources’, admits this one is probably more fictional than the others. Instead of the Otherside, T-san is threatening the real world, erasing the connections between people and that universe with a shouted “HAH!”. Can they stop him in time? And are they going to need the help of an old enemy to do so?
Gotta admit, my favorite parts of this book are the parts with Runa Urumi, who is (possibly?) trying her best to be the Hannibal Lecter to Sorawo’s Clarice. She’s awake once more, bored out of her gourd locked up in DS Research, and promises to be a good girl if they just let her surf the internet a bit. Needless to say they are very distrustful of her, especially as remorse does not seem to be happening anytime soon, but a later scene where she ends up, somewhat reluctantly, helping the other inmates when T-san visits the facility makes me suspect this plotline is not going to be dropped anytime soon. As for Sorawo and Toriko’s relationship, it’s notable here mostly for Toriko’s jealousy when it comes to Akari, which is so obvious this time around that even Sorawo, never the brightest bulb when it comes to social cues, has to reassure her that she does not like Akari in that way. I also don’t see this plot going away anytime soon, though.
Oddly, for something that was supposed to be a grand movie version of the series, this was rather sedate, with only a bit of action in the final parts, and very little shooting of guns. This is, of course, because most of it took place in reality, and I suspect that the link between the two worlds will continue to fluctuate in future. But yeah, good book, go get it.

♡ Winter 2021 Anime Watch List - Reviews pt.1 ♡
Winter 2021 marks the beginning of my anime reviews! below are my thoughts about the anime i watched this past season! (this is NOT spoiler free) ♡
---♡---
Winter 2021 Season;
Tumblr media
Urasekai Picnic / Otherside Picnic
i started off this anime with high hopes and honestly partway in i found myself kinda bored. the creepy encounters on the otherside were kinda weak and the use of CGI wasn't well executed at all. but the characters were interesting enough to keep me watching and i'm glad i did! the scary moments that are well executed actually hit hard and left me with the uncanny chills i was hoping for, even though they were few and far between. but what i found myself enjoying most was the character development as Sorao and Toriko explored the otherside. Sorao grows as a person quite a lot throughout her adventures with Toriko and their friendship, although rocky at first, becomes a source of stability for both of them. sure, they don't find Satsuki by the end. but they found each other and battled a loneliness that was permeating both their lives, and that's a very gentle and wholesome win i didn't anticipate when i started this. although i did wish they had confronted their obvious feelings for each other, it's clear both girls need time and patience with themselves first. and good relationships of any type are built on friendship full of trust and compassion like these two have. i'd like to read this series when i get the chance and learn more about the world and characters!
Rating: 8/10

Dr. STONE: STONE WARS
this season was so incredible! animation, score, pace, and the use of close ups all hit home! the action, tension, humor, and truly heartwarming moments are all so well written and aptly timed. watching Senku and the Kingdom of Science succeed at their goals is uplifting and so motivating to me. the moment that stood out to me most was when the Tsukasa Empire was twarted by the simple paper airplane dipped in explosives. visually it was impactful, but it was a small reminder that Senku and his scientific abilities also have to rely on other skillsets in others to achieve rebuilding humanity. characters like Gen, Yuzuriha, and Kaseki aren't undervalued, and instead are vital assets to the community that Senku has fostered. although this season ended on a bittersweet note, and Tsukasa's future is riding on a near miracle, i'm excited for the next chapter of this story! season 3 has been confirmed and the sea is the Kingdom of Science's next hurdle!
Rating: 10/10

Oh this is a good way to open the episode
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And hey the character that’s predictably my favourite character based on design alone is my favourite character, what a shocker
Anyway Urasekai Picnic episode 2 was, meh tbh. Bit slow, didn’t really care about Sorao’s “I would rather be alone but also I’m being cucked” arc, and the fight with the thing whose name I forgot was really underwhelming, even if I like that mechanically Sorao and Toriko have to cooperate. Like that’s fun on paper but this fight just wasn’t really interesting in any way and visually felt really underwhelming too.
Boys I think this might just be a weak adaptation because everything seems like it should be great but the execution has just been pretty poor on most fronts that aren’t music or voice acting. I’m still gonna finish it but it’s been pretty disappointing so far. Might tell myself I’ll read the source material and then inevitably never get around to doing that.

February 2022
Tumblr media
(Source: Urasekai Picnic | Artist: shirakaba)
No. of Reviews: 2
I may not have read many light novels this month but I did get back into manga. This is because I’m currently working in a place where things can get quiet and there’s a lot of breaks so I take the chance to read some manga when no one’s around. It’s too distracting of an environment for light novels but it’s perfect for manga so I thought I’d give some quick thoughts on the manga that I read this month.
Heaven’s Design Team 2 - I read the first volume a couple of years ago and didn’t care for it but the second volume was up for free on BookWalker and I wanted to give it another go after I enjoyed the anime so much. Sadly, it really just confirmed for me that the series works better for me in anime form. It’s not like it’s a bad series but it just doesn’t grab me in manga form.
Boys Run the Riot 1 - I’ve been wanting to read this one for a while. It’s about a high school trans boy who joins up with another misfit boy to create a clothing brand. I really enjoyed the first volume and I especially liked the protagonist and the way that their development was handled. I look forward to reading more.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun 7 & Maoujou de Oyasumi 7 - Lumping these series together because all I can say about them is that they were hilarious as per usual. One advantage to wearing a mask is that no one can see the goofy grin on my face as I read these series.
Vanitas no Carte 3 - It’s been a while since I read volume 2 but this is another series that I wanted to give another go after watching the anime and it’s another series that I prefer in anime form. Not that Mochizuki’s art is anything less than breathtakingly gorgeous but I just found the story to be more easily digestible in the anime. Still going to continue the manga though because again the art is gorgeous and I know I’m going to want to know what happens next after the second season finishes.
Shinmai Shimai no Futari Gohan 6 - I don’t know, I used to get relaxed reading this series but it’s started to lose it’s charm on me and I think that’s largely down to how annoying Sachi is. I was hoping she would have matured a bit by now but she’s still just super annoying and drags the series down. I still enjoy the cooking element and the relationship between the sisters that is the heart of the series but I’m not sure I’ll bother reading volume 7.
Nettaigyo wa Yuki ni Kogareru 6 - really good dramatic beats in this volume and I especially liked the regression of Konatsu and the fish symbolism. Definitely excited to get to volume 7.
Otoyomegatari 1 - I’ve read this series in English before but I bought it in Japanese to reread and I’m glad I did. The art is so heartwrenchingly detailed, the setting is fascinating, the characters are charming, and I’d count this among one of the few good age gap romances.
Dungeon Meshi 1 - Another Japanese reread. The charm of this series is definitely the nerdy way that it examines the usual RPG monsters and asks ‘what would this taste like?’ and ‘how would you make a meal out of it?’ and comes up with realistic answers. It’s good fun and I appreciate Marcille’s faces.
BL Metamorphosis 1 - Another one that I’ve wanted to read for a while. This series is about a high school girl and an old woman who bond through a shared love of a BL series. It’s cute and sweet and I love both of the leads. It’s pure joy to read and I can’t wait to read volume 2.
Onee to Suki na Onee-san to 1 - a yuri series about a girl who gets driven out of her apartment by a stalker so her sister arranges for her to stay with her kouhai. This kouhai is in love with the sister and is very pure about her love. This was such a cute and fluffy read and I loved seeing the two leads grow closer. It was adorable and I’m excited to continue it.
Yakusoku to Kotoba o Kimi to - a short (around 50 pages) spin-off of Ikemen Sugi desu Shiki-senpai, which I read a few years ago and really enjoyed, focusing on Rei and Hana. A little bit pricy for the contents but I can’t complain. It was cute and that was what I needed. Worth the read if you like Yuama.
List of Reviews:
Watanare 4
Urasekai Picnic 7
My goal next month is to read Reinou Tantei (Keishi Ayasato’s latest work from last year), the new volume of Kami wa Game, and Hatamaou 16. Slowly working my way through the backlog.
