There will be no darker skinned Archons ever, and if there will be other humanoid sovereigns, I doubt they will be darker skinned as well.
The Pyro Archon will be white because Hoyo is 'expecting her to sell' while Western fandom would be happy to accept darker skinned Archons and they do demand her to not be white, Hoyo is still a Chinese company and cater to the eastern fandom.
And no, this isn't a 'china bad' post. But like it or not colorism is a massive issue in Asia.
I'm a Southeast Asian and skin whitening products are very popular and just recently the government issued that the product name must be changed to ' brightening and glowing' instead of whitening. Took 20 god damn years for the government to realize that hating your own skin color is not great actually...
But nothing significant ever be done about it by the people here, many still thinks that you are ugly, poor, or unhygienic if you are dark skinned.
As much as you scream at Hoyo to not be colorist, as much as you demand the company to address the problem, the real issues also lies with the larger society as a whole.
( But I'm not defending hoyo here, I think the company fucking sucks and greedy POS)
Now, not all eastern and south asian people are colorist and I'm sure there are CN, KN, ID or JP fans who will be happy with a black archon or doesn't really care about the skin color, but the fact that colorism is still an issues pretty much said something. Hoyo is a corporation and corporations rarely willing to take risk out of fear that it might harm their profit.
"But if the fans are being loud enough they can release a 5 stars that is not pale (and actually work unlike Dehya)" yeah but Genshin Dev is notorious for not fucking listening to their fans, so I have given up any hope that 'important 5 stars' will have a skin color that is darker than tan. Maybe even with the rampant colorism problem in Asia, if hoyo is a different company things would have been different... :/
But sadly, they are not that different company

Sombron's Cobra Dragon Form is a call-out to Buddhist Nagas. Or: wait, are Divine and Fell Dragons really that different?
Hello! I'm back with more info dump on the Buddhism going on in Fire Emblem, whee!!
Did you know that Naga isn't just a name given to the well-known Divine Dragon goddess of FE? Did you know that cobras are the original Naga in Buddhism? There's a funny relationship here.
The word, Naga, is originally a sanskrit word for a snake deity. This class of deities are depicted to be wise serpents, and there is a specific one known as Mucalinda who sheltered Buddha from rain and storm as he meditated to attain enlightenment. Which then leads into these depictions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nagas can be depicted as multiheaded or single headed, rarer partial or fully humans. Notably in South and Southeast Asian depictions, they are often cobras. Note the flaps on those necks. 100% a cobra.
But as you all might be aware, the Naga we know in Fire Emblem is a western dragon. Her daughter, Tiki, also is a western dragon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bonus: Engage Tiki is slightly different in being feathery. This form reminds me more of a jatayu/garuda but im not going down into that rabbit hole it's a WHOLE OTHER SHIT i dont want to explain rn @_@
Tumblr media
Lumera of course, also fits into the class of Divine Dragon with a form like this:
Tumblr media
Not at all serpent like. Meanwhile, Sombron is a truer depiction for the Buddhist depiction of a Naga with his less eagle-y and more... cobra head. Incidentally, Grima also qualifies as a closer depiction due having no limbs (wings aside iykyk). Left: Sombron. Right: Grima.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So what does that all mean? Well, two schools of thoughts from me.
At the time of development, the original Fire Emblems were always meant for a western lens. Fell Dragons at the time did not exist conceptually, and so the idea of a divine god dragon was decided to have a western look, in order to match the setting of the games.
Currently, this might be playing with the ideas of Dragons and 'true gods'. Fell Dragons are actually a more accurate depiction of the Buddhist Nagas, and Divine Dragons aren't. Based on this, nerds like me can go 'DIVINE DRAGON CONSPIRACY! WE WORSHIP THE FALSE GODS!' while being kinda correct about it as the devs giggle at my loser ass.
For the lore nerds who might have heard of this... The First Dragons. (Link the First Dragons gallery on fireemblem.fandom.com), and the FE multi-worlds. It could be entirely possible dragons are originally some space faring beings who decided to settle down on various FE worlds, having multiple different species with wildly different looks. As time went on, certain species died out while some survived, and took up the mantle of guiding humanity or just chilling and being worshiped.
Methinks Divine Dragons and Fell Dragons are just names given to them by mortals to differentiate either by appearance or factions. Engage has basically shown us that Fell Dragons aren't inherently evil, and there has been cases of Dragons who aren't perfect either.
As a side, because Buddhism falls under the Dharmic family of religion, Nagas are also depicted in Hinduism. Again, they are cobras who can be partial or fully snake and/or human, and are here assigned the domain of the underworld. Sombron's grand upheaval of Gradlon is a major call-out to this root, as his domain can be argued to be underground for the majority of the game. (Or underwater.)
Buddhism is so widespread that it has morphed and mixed with a lot of other culture and religions, and notably it has mixed with China's. Under the Mandate of Heaven, it is said that when an emperor witnesses a Dragon, it is a sign that the heavens have given them an approval and they would turn out to be excellent rulers. Asian dragons are also serpent-like, and this idea has also appeared in Southeast Asia and more importantly spread to this one country: Japan.
At the end of the day, I don't think Engage is keen in asking 'who is the real divine dragon?' but just messing around with those who know. And now you do.
Have fun with this weird knowledge!

the entity canonically has no gender. it existed before the concept of gender and it may exist long after the human race & their particularities are dead and gone. it uses it/its pronouns. the only reason people assume its "female" is because of the french language, which is prevalent in canada (where dbd's devs and gaming company are located). iirc in the translated french description, the entity was referred to with "feminine" pronouns, but that doesn't really mean anything. there are feminine words for inanimate objects, like a phone or a table. the entity is not masc, or fem, or nonbinary (but it can and does answer to any pronoun, usually the survivors refer to it with she/her pronouns regardless); these are completely human taxonomical concepts that exists exclusively among a subspecies of sapient mammals, in a tiny little speck of a planet dwarfed by a vast universe and the enormity of the entity itself, who canonically contains multiple realms and consumes all life from entire worlds, timelines, and cosmoses.
it seems, to me, the entity's realms are deeply symbolic of the corruption and evil that exists among humanity, reminiscent of the mara in southeast asian spiritual cosmologies; it is literally described as the embodiment of evil. The entity is the cosmoses, corrupted, warped by the hubris and cruelty of human beings and their current corporatism-favoring ideology (for example: the black vale cult uses various corporations, organizations, and governments across the multi-realms to maintain the trials and find victims for the fog).
but what is evil? an entity that we can all rest easy knowing it's separate from humanity? a devil? a djin? a monster? or: a word invented by human beings to describe the horrific acts committed by humans beings? why else would the entity need humans, specifically, to feed from?
on some level, danny understands this. it chose him, after all. this pragmatic empathy earns the entity's favor, whether he cares or not. There is an otherworldly sense of camaraderie between them.

Oh hey, sorry let me explain what I meant
I understand the Americanization of saying the main cast of ATLA because the cartoons was a Y7 NICKTOON that hade to be compatible enough to bye syndicated with SpongeBob when needed
Nothing against the og show, just you can pick up the obvious westernization when you get into more Asian fantasy stories
But what I’m talking about is the lack of cultural exchanges despite the access of African kingdoms being for more accessible than before
Also what those things that assassin creed milk the living FUCK out of to explain why we can go to the crusades to Italian renaissance to the North America
And recent to the Viking era to a prequel that take place in 9th century Baghdad?
(Also teasing that India will probably be used in future games)
Oh yeah
TRADE ROUTES, TRADE ROUTES, TRADE ROUTES, ESTABLISHED A WHOLE LOT OF FUCKING TRADES IN YOUR FANTASY WORLD PEOPLE
Sorry, but I remember Dave pointed out the issues of modern fantasy stories is that they are written by metropolitan people who can’t comprehend life outside of their cities
Vs me who you know grew up in various places ie a college town for a bit.
Also under thing, if your ass can barely comprehend modern farmer lives
Your shit out of luck when writing proper world building
It like the issues with Yasuke for ac red, the thing is that story leaks revealed that Yasuke outsider status will be acknowledged
Hopefully it was a team idea not sbi suggestion
But as you know the assassins value free will, so when research and learning that Yasuke was kicked out of Japan by Mitshundie who refer to Yasuke as animal. I can see the devs desires saying the assassins saved him and Yasuke slowly agrees to help unify Japan to ensure the country won’t be at the mercy of Templars
Also I mention before because I did my own research and theorize that assassins Yasuke will die in Southeast Asia given the East African population there
Oh your other friend who the lawyer with the Cookie Monster icon pointed out that in rings of power made Gaderial a burnout millenial…ugh writers I understand you were told to write what you know
But you need to be VERY conscious especially if it a pre industrial setting
Yeah this is an issues, established. Fucking. Trade. Routes.
Make African kingdoms based off the Mali, the Yoruba, the Moors
Say in your fantasy world a group of refugees and immigrants decide to leave their ancestral homeland and move to the European kingdoms, now in reality most would be in trading ports and such
But say a second gen of them already assimilated into the surrounding area wanted to be a knight, of course it would have a lot of discrimination and such. But it make sense for that one character
Sorry, I was thinking about the Latin Americans and how they acknowledge they are mixed. Now yes Anglophones had a lot of separatism….but I think what huge root cause between black Americans and Africans is that my community don’t realize we’re like the Latinos-wait wait most of them have their native roots so nvm.
Because we grew up in an extremely different culture from them. Yes we can now interacted with native Africans due to globalism
But black activists, if the French and British were at each other throats for centuries. What the hell you guys think we are to Africans when we only started to have casual relations in the 60’s?
Sorry for these essay long anons, but I was thinking what wrong with modern fantasy beyond the woke shit…it’s because these fucks had very limited life experience or understanding of pre colonial times
Nothing against the og show, just you can pick up the obvious westernization when you get into more Asian fantasy stories. But what I’m talking about is the lack of cultural exchanges despite the access of African kingdoms being for more accessible than before
It's that money thing again, managed a great story still tho,
and ya have to wonder about the difficulty of gathering up a collection of "folk tales" from various indigenous groups around the globe, Africa being a massive untapped resource for that,
Not sure how many would lend themselves to movies, but anthology type tv series like twilight zone style with no set cast other than Rod Sterling as the announcer that does a new one every week, I could actually see that working
Your shit out of luck when writing proper world building
All this stuff feels pretty spot on
Also I mention before because I did my own research and theorize that assassins Yasuke will die in Southeast Asia given the East African population there
AC people seem to do a very good job, to the point that folks were thinking the one game could be used to help rebuild Notre Dame, that didn't pan out, but they still gave the game away free on Steam so people could visit if they wanted.
Say in your fantasy world a group of refugees and immigrants decide to leave their ancestral homeland and move to the European kingdoms, now in reality most would be in trading ports and such But say a second gen of them already assimilated into the surrounding area wanted to be a knight, of course it would have a lot of discrimination and such. But it make sense for that one character
Look up the Jewish diaspora that formed after the last time they thought it would be a good idea to piss off Rome. Not for integration so much as routes taken and areas settled
Funny you mention them, that thing that nobody ever expects resulted in large numbers of, once again, Jewish diaspora who not only settled in North Africa they also went to Latin America, weird little pockets of Jewish people dotting places in various countries in the Caribbean and South America, couple that are widely disavowed by 99.9% of the Jewish population that knows they exist.
Might be less useful since they've managed to hold on to their Jewishness and not assimilate
-wait wait most of them have their native roots so nvm.
Number of Mexicans I've known that think they're descended from the Mayans I'm not so sure about that, but you're not actually wrong either.
But black activists, if the French and British were at each other throats for centuries. What the hell you guys think we are to Africans when we only started to have casual relations in the 60’s?
yay technology, it really has made some things better, other things worse but eh equivalent exchange as the Alric brothers say (my animu reference for the year)
Sorry for these essay long anons, but I was thinking what wrong with modern fantasy beyond the woke shit…it’s because these fucks had very limited life experience or understanding of pre colonial times
No worries, sorry bout the time it took to get this out got things pulling left and right and I want to be able to get a good answer out to you so we can call it even, lol.

Really loving Coral Island so far, the NPCs are so enjoyable and the world looks so luscious and beautiful. I’m also loving all the Southeast Asian (Indonesian?) inspired designs. It really looks like no other game I’ve played. You can tell the devs put a lot of love, thought, and effort into this game. My only real complaint is that my game tends to freeze every couple of minutes, but it comes back fairly quickly with no other issue. I imagine this is mostly due to it being just released for Xbox—it’ll likely improve with their next patch. I’m excited to see what other improvements and additions the devs add in the future!

What Even is the Eastern Empire?
A.k.a. Anne tries to understand which culture it tries to represent. And the TL;DR is, "I think they tried to make it 'Asia' in the way Westerners understand 'Asia', but they ended up making it a huge melting pot of culture that it reads more like 'Southeast Asia' to me."
Welcome back to Anne posts weird stuff, and today this post is all about Aveyond and the Eastern Empire. As a disclaimer, I'd like to remind you that I'm from the Philippines which means I am Southeast Asian, and what you may read here is a limited POV of what looks like/feels like (different parts of) Asia. This analysis is also limited to the location's incarnation in Aveyond 1 as I am not too familiar with Aveyond 3.
What is the Eastern Empire in Aveyond lore?
The Eastern Empire is the second major location in Aveyond 1. Made of at least two major cities, it is located on the northern portion of the Eastern Isle of Arishta. The Empire is known to practice slavery and produce exemplary sorcerers and sword singers in Shadwood Academy. It is also surrounded by forests and what seems to be either mud rivers or shallow rivers.
Now, Why Would It Be East Asia?
Here are the reasons why it is believed the Eastern Empire is an equivalent of East Asia.
1: Its final (Build C) soundtrack.
The BGM titled something like “Japanesque” in Aaron Walz' list (it's actually not included in his album for some reason!) and it sounds exactly like how your stereotypical "traditional Chinese" BGM would sound like.
2: The architecture in Veldarah and Ejindro.
Both cities have these triangular roof structures. Ejindro is spot-on with the red roofs, while Veldarah has green ones.
3: The interiors.
The walls of majority of the buildings in Ghalarah seem to look paper-like, while in Veldarah they are paneled walls. The windows has these patterns and what looks like scroll paintings above them. These may be a callback to traditional Chinese or Japanese interior design. The bed design may perhaps be inspired by a traditional Chinese canopy bed.
Blue peacocks are in abundance in China too like with India, and there are lots of blue peacock feather decorations. You also have the traditional Chinese lion statues (though inaccurate because they were simplified). There are also no visible chairs around tables (though in one instance there were pillows), sword decors up walls, and pine-like and palm-like trees as indoor plants.
4: The Empress.
I believe this is a callback to Emperor/Empress Wu Zetian of China, the so-called only female emperor of China. It’s also fitting that Empress Telin doesn’t seem to have spouses or kids, much like how Wu Zetian is not really surrounded by (immediate) family by the time she rose to power.
5: The uniforms of Shadwood.
While similar uniforms are used in the School of War and Magick, we see these default sprites first used in Shadwood. The uniform is composed of kimono tops and pants, reminiscent of real-life uniforms for various East Asian sports.
6: The skin colors of the citizens of the Eastern Empire.
The devs used standard RTP skin colors, but lighter-skinned Asians are concentrated more in the North/East Asian parts of the world.
But, Why Would It Be Southeast Asia?
Notice how those points are a very broad, very stereotypical characterization of “Asia” as many Westerners paint it as. However, the finer details really speak out more as “Southeast Asia” to me, not only because it looks like a melting pot of culture from West and East, but also because of very particular things that just scream of “home” for me.
1: The trees in the forest.
Now, I'm not a plant expert, but the trees we see in the surrounding area of the Eastern Empire greatly resemble palm trees. Palm trees can exist in several areas, but they prefer hotter climates, such as Pacific Southeast Asia.
Also, when I went out Ghalarah the first time, I was like "Oh my gosh, that's just like home." The underdeveloped roads, the confusing paths, and the abundance of chickens just killed me.
2: The overall fashion and the names.
Sans the uniforms of Shadwood, the fashion in the Eastern Empire is rather very Western. I can't blame the devs for this as they were using RTP, but also, I'm bummed because the RTP does have sprite designs geared towards this aesthetic. The names seem to be more Western too.
This blend of Western and Eastern, however, is very Southeast Asia, though more modern Southeast Asia.
3: Ambiguous elements in the architecture and interior design.
They do use white, but the lack of red really removes it from the Eastern Asian design philosophies. The lack of triangular roofs and paneled walls/windows on the exterior also adds to this removal.
While peacocks were big during Ming Dynasty China, I'm not sure they actually displayed peacock feathers like that. Additionally, the walls and windows in Shadwood Academy and the Empress' palace are not very East Asian, but the bulb-like shape is more West/South Asian, implying that the Eastern Empire might actually have some Islamic-like influence, similar to Veldt. And boy, I’m excited to tell you that Southeast Asia has a good portion of Islamic population.
4: Rhen gets to keep her gold earrings even as a slave.
It's been mentioned in this one video that precolonial Southeast Asia is so rich of gold, that they don't care if slaves wore gold. (Yes, we also practiced slavery in the past.)
I don't have the receipts on this, but I do know from my Archaeology class that we did trade a whole looot of gold with our neighbors because that’s how rich we were in gold.
5: The tattoo on graduate sword singers (and sorcerers).
So that line about Lars and his mother in the Chinese translation of Aveyond 1? That replaced the scene with Mistress Rona seeing the tattoo on Rhen's hand and knowing she must now show respect to Rhen. Tattoos, however, are a taboo in East Asia, and they're associated with criminals. On the other hand, traditional Southeast Asia usually sees them as symbols of bravery, strength, and prowess.
6: Lars’ facesets being a little more tan/dark-skinned.
While the devs used RTP for most characters’ sprites, it doesn’t mean it’s 1:1 to the faceset colors (see: Pirate John). Lars’ faceset skin colors are the shade of brown I observe off my fellow Southeast Asians.
Conclusion
As a fantasy setting, the Eastern Empire I think is nicely-written. It’s very consistent, and I like how there are design elements both shared and limited to each of its cities. However, regarding its supposed real-life inspirations, it still seems so vague. While others peg it as “East Asia”, I peg it as “Southeast Asia” because of the blend of cultural influences.
Of course, I am not an expert on this subject, and these are merely my thoughts as a Southeast Asian. This analysis is also very limited to my personal experiences of Southeast Asia and China, and to the limit of my Google research. I highly suggest that you do your own research to confirm certain details.
If you do find discrepancies or additional details to what I’ve listed above, do discuss them; I’d love to hear about them!

[I.D.: A gifset containing four screenshots of the interactive fiction game OCHITSUBAKI.
Image 1 shows the typical layout of the game. On the lefthand side of the screen is the game’s title in both Japanese and English. Beneath the title are the poetry lines “A fallen camellia / is a beheading, / every time, / every petal falling / at once: / a severing.” Beneath the poetry is “Feyxuan,” the name of the game’s author. In the middle of the screen is a computer window with a pixelated, retro portrait of the character Hanashiro. Another window of another character is beneath it. A third window on the righthand side of the screen reads, “The tongue of the heavens, of seven, of worth, of more than the fen and the murk and the mercury of star, too far, I can taste it. If I want to taste the language of heaven, I will have to go seek out my remaining bretheren.” The overall screen is tinted purple.
Image 2 shows the game with its graphics colored in black and white. In the middle of the screen is a computer window with an anime-styled portait of a character that’s captioned “Lun Kochouran.” The window on the right of the screen reads, “I live or die at your service. (Kill, too, I suppose).”
Image 3 shows the game tinted purple again. Two narrative options are presented on the righthand of the screen. One says, “Shiragiku, who holds the line, in the same place, every time, the MOONFLOWER CASTLE of crescent, incandescent, who holds no love for me but keeps me in mind, we meet once every Time.” The other option says, “Shirayuri, unremembered, forgotten in every wreckage of world, reborn after every new age unfurls, who I knew when my goddess was just a girl, and who not once, not once have I found with their SWALLOW-wings, damage unwrought since the Age of Erl.”
Image 4 shows the screen colored in black and white again. The righthand window says, “A celestial king of heaven. And there you’ll go back again. I don’t know what to do. So I kiss you.”

dev patel,non-binary,bisexual, he/they ― hey look, it’s dhruv acharya! they’re 32 years old, they’ve lived in shrike heights their entire life and they’re currently working at shrike heights radio. i heard they’re pretty indecisive, but i think they’re so kind at the same time. can they make it out alive? || ariluz, 27, they/them, est + n/a
Hello friends!! Man, it has been a minute since I’ve written an intro or joined a group rp. I will be honest in saying I’m a little nervous but you will come to know that I am always down to clown. Which brings me to this Sagittarius, kind of a mess, warm hearted person that is Dhruv.
They’re a new new character for me so there’s a lot of space for background and plots, especially if your character has lived in Shrike Heights for as long as he has. Highkey a Shrike Heights lifer...if the killers ever let him get that far (lol). But here’s what I know about Dhruv so far:
Dhruv is the eldest sibling to two younger sisters (names tbd) and the son of a very loving and dedicated couple who still have dreams of Dhruv one day becoming a doctor and taking their entire family out of Shrike Heights.
They use he/him and they/them pronouns, have been pretty secure in their sexuality for a long time and as such has ruined many a relationship with various people.
Their first name means “polar star or constant,” which is something they take to heart and being Hindu is extremely important to them. As is their family. As a non Hindu person myself and non southeast asian poc, I am very dedicated to honoring this background and also very open to being called in if I ever do anything that doesn’t align or isn’t well researched/thought out.
They are very much that dude who lives in their parents basement. As an aspiring musician, Dhruv grew up with the idea that they would one day make it out of Shrike Heights based on their musical talent and one day be touring the world like all of their favorite artists. They’re that friend who always had the latest musical gadget (even though they often bought it second hand) and ever since the walkman came out in the late 70s, they can always be seen walking through the mall or town with a pair of headphones on.
After high school Dhruv did go to college but found it hard to find a passion in the sciences when his real heart was in music. It was then that they started interning at Shrike Heights radio and have been there ever since, eventually making his way to having an hour long show during the 2pm time slot. Not the most ideal but he makes the most of this.
Dhruv did move out temporarily when he went to college and one of his sisters moved into their room so when they graduated and had no plans, they ended up living in the basement of their childhood home. It started as a mattress on the floor between all their storage until they found the motivation to turn it into their own little apartment, fridge & separate entrance included. Though they still have to go upstairs to use a stove or microwave..or shower.
But after the killings started, Dhruv’s parents became increasingly worried about his job at the mall so it became more of a peace of mind for them to have Dhruv home. And he wasn’t going to argue with that. If anything it made him settle even more and he does his fair share to help them out (aka buying groceries and not complaining about driving his sisters to school.)
When they’re not working they’re either attending someone’s gig at julio’s, playing their guitar on the sidewalk for change or fixing their bike for the millionth time because they refuse to get a car.
Also very much a Leafwell fan+customer. Stoner bbs welcome <3 (posts will always be tagged with drugs tw and or smoking tw)
Also will make a mixtape for anyone and everyone. :))
That’s it for now I think??? Will add more as I think of more. Neighbors, co workers, mall workers, exes, besties, flings, high school classmates, random person who always gives them change, julio regulars, musicians, etc, all possible plots welcome!!

My favorite thing about the people calling out Genshin Impact for being colorist because of the devs refusal to add more playable characters darker than a dusty paper bag and like to blame western black and brown people(usually black people. lets be honest now) somehow forget that brown eastern asian people exist. Hell, they forget that the whole Southeast exist who big consumers of free-to-play games.
Goes to show they are not the only ones who only think about the West and Western politics while accusing pointing the finger at the Sjws.
