A tweet by SparkNotes that says “ "oh you buried your friend yesterday? that must've been hard" not really. once I led him into the catacombs and got him chained to the wall things went pretty smoothly”

OKAY the sparknotes lore is as follows:
abby dahlkemper was the first signing from nc courage. she came back from back surgery last august (she had like really bad sciatica, i would suggest listening to her snacks episode it’s an insane story). a real solid defender, i believe she is a vice captain.
alex morgan and kailen sheridan (canadian minister of defence) were also huge signings/trades before the first season.
they drafted some big talent in naomi girma (in girma we trust 🫡) and jaedyn shaw, who are both ballers.
kyra carusa has been a solid forward for us as well, she has a couple of bangers under her belt and plays for republic of ireland.
if you want i can give you a rundown on other player profiles but here’s the good stuff (tea):
jill ellis is the president 🫠 of course, as much as i hate to say it, she was extremely successful as uswnt coach but also that program ran several players into the ground, partially under her watch. players playing through pain etc.
casey stoney is an icon. she has been fined many a time for talking about refs. most iconic moment imo is when she was sitting on a cooler and got a red for allegedly kicking the ball when it went out of bounds and delaying the game. hilarious stuff.
there’s the angel city vs wave rivalry because california and this offseason during free agency, wave signed former angel city midfielder savannah mccaskill. there’s the rivalry aspect, but the additional wrinkle of not many wave fans wanting her and it’s kind of funny. she’s not a terrible player per se, but she’s made some less than clean tackles in her time and sometimes makes very questionable decisions on the field. there’s a running bit on twitter about fans of both teams kindly offering savannah mccaskill to each other.
but really san diego has good vibes overall and is wildly successful for a team that has only existed for two seasons
THANK YOU i am caught up

This meme comes from Sparknote’s Twitter three years ago. It depicts Batman, who is labeled as Jane Austen, slapping Robin, who is labeled as “anyone named Richard”. I chose this meme because the very first thing I highlighted in Northanger Abbey was in Austen’s description of Catherine Morland’s father as, “a very respectable man, though his name was Richard.” On the topic of names, I don’t actually know why Jane Austen seems to think so ill of the name Richard, but based on my brief perusal of Google it seems like this is not the only time in her works that Austen names a character Richard and then proceeds to insult them. It may seem like a bit of a stretch to think that Austen is categorizing characters based on their name, but considering that two of the characters in her works described as being the most beautiful and accomplished are both named Jane (Jane Fairfax of Emma and Jane Bennet of Pride and Prejudice) it doesn’t seem too out of her realm.
Besides Austen’s peculiar use of names lore, I wanted to use this meme and the quote it represents to discuss the kind of humor Austen employs. This sort of humor, the one-off lines/insults that she drops and moves on from quickly, is something that I’m really beginning to appreciate from Austen, especially after seeing her Juvenilia where it’s almost nothing but these quick quips. For example, in The Beautiful Cassandra, where Austen describes Cassandra eating pastries, refusing to pay for them, and knocking the cook down and then, in the next sentence, Cassandra just moves on to her next adventure of the day. Austen does something similar a few more times in the following chapters of Northanger Abbey, my favorite of which being in her description of Mrs. Allen, “whose society can raise no other emotion than surprise at there being any men in the world who could like them well enough to marry them.” This is such an, for lack of a better word, efficient insult. It’s brutal, straight to the point, and paints a vivid picture of her character without using many words. Then, she moves back into listing off characteristics as if she didn’t just tear down Mrs. Allen’s character in one sentence. I actually found Austen through Pride and Prejudice and Zombies which is an interesting perspective to come from because when I then read Pride and Prejudice I really felt the sort of undercurrent of violence/sharp wit after having seen the conversations played out as sword fights, so I have been aware of Austen’s sort of sharp wit and humor for a while. However, I do feel like it’s a bit more obvious in her Juvenilia and Northanger Abbey thus far than in some of her later works, so I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate it now.

i want to write an hotd fanfic so bad… i’m watching the early GOT show too as well to try and wrap my head around the lore but i fear that my fic will still be very amateur and show that i don’t really have that big of a grasp on the lore and worldbuilding and language around me.. can you give any advice onto how to tackle this? any specific ways i should research or how to remember every little thing to make the story as accurate and correct as possible?
hi and welcome! don't worry, i have been through this exact process within this fandom haha. i was the queen of sparknoting my way through my lit classes in college when i didn't have other time, so i think i've kind of perfected the art of making it seem like you've deeply read something, even if you haven't.
let me give my usual disclaimer that i don't recommend reading fanfic to get a sense of characters or worldbuilding in a new fandom. that's because to a fresh eye, it's impossible to tell what is the author's invention/headcanon (which may be incorrect/ooc) and what is actual canon. fanfic writing should be about indulging yourself and your creativity, not about trying to cater to the most popular opinions even if you don't agree with them. so i really do recommend sticking to canon as much as possible, and being very deliberate about where and when you use fanon as a reference.
i create a tumblr blog for every fandom that i'm planning to write in to serve as a repository for my research and notes. this blog is unusual in that i forgot to make it private and then had too much fun engaging with y'all to go back. but my first posts were all specifically for stormbreak purposes. if you're nervous about putting things out there, you can password-lock your blog, so you're the only one with access. being able to sort with tags for characters, houses, etc. will be super helpful. another good idea is to take notes in google drive, since you can also search for things there and use the outline feature to navigate. the goal is to have one or two places where you compile all of your work that are easily navigable.
a really good starting place for research is this particular asoiaf wiki. i do not recommend any of the others, especially the ones based on individual shows, because those often do not include details that are in the books. i genuinely cannot tell you how many hours i've spent on this wiki. start your research here- look for dates, places, events, houses, relationships, appearances, etc.
meta analysis is also a really good idea to gain knowledge. tumblr or reddit are the places to go for this. it's really important to seek out posts that are both sympathetic and unsympathetic towards characters or houses. the goal is to get a sense of the different opinions within fandom, and decide which ones make sense to you. on tumblr, you can search a term, select for text posts, and scroll until you find big walls of text. (as an aside: if you're doing this, blocking tags related to fanfiction, imagines, xreader, etc. will help streamline your search and filter out headcanons in favor of meta)
lastly, and be careful with this one since it is fanon but not canon: memes! twitter and tiktok are great for these. they're great for getting a sense of vibes, but not for actual canon facts about a character. remember, fanon can sometimes be very distant from or even contradictory with canon, so take these with a grain of salt. i do still find them useful for forming opinions about personalities, mannerisms, and attitudes of different characters.
if you want more info about how i actually planned out stormbreak, i've answered an ask about it here!
