hooooooly crap a native endangered falcon just landed in the tree in my backyard 💛💛💛

i cant get a good photo but they look like this

the kārearea is my fav bird! i nicknamed the heroine of my novel Sparrowhawk after these guys! they fly up to speeds of 230km/h (142 mph) and can hunt prey twice their size aaahhh sorry ik im fangirling about a bird

but there are literally only estimated to be 5000 - 8000 of them surviving in existence and THERES ONE IN MY TREE HOLY CRAP IM SO HAPPY RN

ok I have no pictures BUT I wanted to let you know that I saw a sparrow hawk in my garden today :) very pretty bird even if it did take me several hours and a list of every bird in my country to decide which one she was. Kinda knew from the start she was a hawk bc of her wingspan and flight pattern + she was a light brown from above which is fairly unusual bc most birds around are a dark brown so she was pretty easy to identify in the end lol

Just witnessed a sparrow hawk take down a blackbird whilst I was working in my garden. I’m kinda sad as blackbirds are one of my favourite birds, but also the sparrow hawk’s gotta eat, and damn it was lightning quick and impressive. She just sat their chilling for a while before taking off. Miss Hiss ignored this spectacle completely.

"What are you getting Varric for his birthday Hawke?" Merrill asked is a conspiratorial whisper.

"I don't know. I suppose I hadn't thought of it yet." Sparrow didn't seem to share her concern, speaking in her normal volume.

"Yet? It's tomorrow. How could you have forgotten?" she hissed, shocked. "You never forget our birthdays."

"No, I don't. That's why I know it isn't for another three months." Sparrow replied confidently. "The man's my best friend."

Merrill glanced at Fenris when she said that, but he didn't seem phased in the slightest.

"You're both wrong," Isabela cut in, "he just had his birthday."

"The pirate is right," Aveline agreed, somewhat reluctantly. "He made a big fuss of it a few months back."

"Months? Newly-wed life has addled your brain. It's been 5 weeks, at most!" Isabela scoffed.

"I didn't know he had a birthday." Anders shrugged.

"Why wouldn't he have a birthday?" Fenris growled incredulously. "Everyone has a date of birth."

"I know that," the mage replied from between clenched teeth. "What I meant was I didn't think he celebrated it. Is that a dwarf thing?"

Sebastian scrubbed a hand over his face and groaned. "Why do I keep accepting these invitations?" he mumbled under his breath.

"Okay, hold the fuck on a minute." Sparrow held up her hands, not wanting the discussion to devolve into an all out brawl. Between Aveline and Isabela, then Fenris and Anders with Merrill trying to get everyone to calm down, the bloodshed would be written of in the annals history for centuries.

As if on cue, Varric sat back down at the table, oblivious to the entire conversation.

"You!" Sparrow pointed her finger at him, blue eyes narrowed. "When's your birthday, you sneaky sonuvabitch?"

He chuckled uncomfortable and slowly stood back up when a bunch of angry faces focused on him.

"You know what? Funniest thing. I think my room was on fire when I left. Probably should take care of that. You know how I like to procrastinate."

"Are you swindling us for year-round presents?" Sparrow asked amid a sea of angry nods.

"Aw, c'mon. Swindle is such a harsh word. I'm just trying to think of everyone's financial well-being! You know, space it out. Besides, you all save money on a party." His companions didn't appear to appreciate his thoughtfulness.

"When's your birthday, Varric?" Sparrow's tone suggested he had very few chances to get this right.

"Would you believe it if I said it was next Thursday?"
