Guns we never got to use in Metal Gear Solid 2
Tumblr media
So, instead of gushing over how amazing MGS2 is, let's get down to brass tacks and immediately nerd out over what we didn't get. First off, let's start at the beginning. Olga Gurlukovich, the woman who's the sole reason I start making monkey noises when I see a woman in super baggy pants with suspenders hanging down. She carries a PSS pistol;
Tumblr media
The PSS is a silent semi-automatic pistol, this pistol gets tossed overboard before the player can get a chance to use it. If in use by the Gurlukovich mercenaries, we could imagine it would be a pistol with very scarce ammo, but also highly effective, being semi-auto. Probably considered a lethal option to the XM9.
Next up, we have the NRS2. No good in-game picture available, so a picture of the real thing will do;
Tumblr media
This highly unusual knife gun, which is fired with the blade pointed towards yourself. For gameplay, this could probably be used for focus on close quarters fighting, but with a possibility of shooting at something in the distance without needing to swap weapons. It would certainly be an interesting option that could make gameplay varied.
Next up, the Colt Single Action Army revolver.
Tumblr media
"This is the greatest handgun ever made. The Colt Single Action Army. Six bullets. More than enough to kill anything that moves." It's clear that MGS3 figured out, holy shit, this gun is cool and we need to let the player use it. Especially, with how they added gameplay features to it, they decided to give the gun the ability to ricochet bullets so you can trickshot your way through Tselinogorsk. The same mindset in MGS2 could have made for some really interesting choices considering all the fancy indoor areas and hallways. There's also no proper magnum handgun for the player in MGS2, so if you want a handgun that can blast away common enemies in a single shot to the chest, this could have been it.
Tumblr media
Sergei Gurlukovich himself pulls a Makarov on Scott Dolph during the tanker chapter. This would been a basic sidearm for the mercenaries and is understandably cut, it's a gun that it's difficult to make exciting for the player as it would performed the same as the USP, but lower capacity and no laser and no silencer. Then again, it could have been added purely for variety's sake. Which is always good to make something feel vast and a real universe.
Tumblr media
"Laugh and grow fat" This one would be interesting in-game for the player. Provided it would be somewhat controllable for skilled players, and sharing ammo with the USP, it could be a hog for churning through your ammo and low range, but if used up closed, you could definitely do some solid bursts of damage. What magazine the gun would have, would definitely help decide if you could bursts a few enemies before reloading, or needing to reloading between every enemy.
Tumblr media
This is another special one. It's already very special that a russian mercenary group would use a western shotgun such as the SPAS-12. It also features a combination pump and semi-automatic mechanism. This could in theory allow the player to change the firerate. Who knows for what purpose, there could be some video game logic like how they can only use the really powerful ammunition with a pump-action, and have the less damaging ammo be spammable with the semi-automatic mechanism. Or, they could skip that and make the shotgun be only pump or only semi, and then focus on how it works in that way. It definitely opens up a world of weird gameplay options.
Tumblr media
Here's a weird one, a rail gun. MGS2 is a stealth game. I realize that, and I really like it. But it really suffers in the department of being able to do things at a distance outside of set pieces set up for sniping. It would definitely be a New Game Plus type of gun, maybe given out for playing through the game while helping or tranq'ing birds, not killing them. It would definitely be a great gun for taking out bosses. It was later implemented in Peace Walker, but required quite the team effort to use it efficiently. Clearly, the developers also loved this magnificent piece of art and weaponry in game.
Tumblr media
Here's another fun one. Assuming it would be a counter to the M4 later available in-game, the AN94, could possibly given the hyper-burst option, making it fire two rounds per trigger press in an insane fire rate. Looking at how the gun has a light or laser mounted onto it's front gas port/gas block, it looks really close to be able to be used by the player already.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a gun that is really known for being cut content. The French FAMAS. How it made it's way to the tanker or plant would be difficult to imagine considering it was supposed to be only for the genome soldiers in Alaska in MGS1. It would occupy the same purpose as the AKS74u and the M4 as well, so it wouldn't add anything new to the player, but it would feel familiar for returning MGS1 players. While not correct, the gun could have had a three round burst to differentiate it, like how it does in Counter-Strike 1.6 which is what I really know it from, form these days.
Tumblr media
The FN P90. What a wonderful PDW. Again, another gun that's understandable that we don't have access to, as it wouldn't contribute much, but would also clutter an already weird to navigate inventory. It's equipped with the original old red dot sight, so in first person view, that would actually be very different for regular players of first person shooters with iron sights from these days.
Here's a really weird one, the SPP-1M Underwater pistol. Wait what? So in the original design of MGS2, there was an even greater focus on the underwater parts of the gameplay, even more fighting. Which explains why someone would suggest adding an pistol focused on underwater fighting. Probably also related to the cut Dead Cell member who went by the name "Chinaman" who was an olympic level swimmer, and if Vamp's boss fight wasn't annoying enough, I can totally see the need for a gun in that section. There is leftover code in the game that suggest this got quite far in development for player use, the gun itself as far as I know, don't have a model in-game.
Tumblr media
And here for the last firearm that should/could have been available to the player. The M203 grenade launcher. It's very clearly shown off in several cutscenes, being used by both the Navy Seals when confronting Fortune, as well as Snake Plissken;
Tumblr media
How this would be utilized in-game would be interesting. Could definitely be a very viable boss-encounter weapon with it's full-auto capability from the M4, and then being able to somehow quickly switch over to using the grenade launcher. So in conclusion, many of this firearms were considered, but when we think about it, we can also clearly understand why much of it was cut, so there would be less work to do on bland equipment, so the developers could rather focus and shine up all the equipment that is actually interesting gameplay wise.

Hey Doc, don't do anything stupid or Tachanka won't be able to enjoy his vacation mission. us ADULTS will make sure the little ones are having their own fun away from WEIRDOS on another note, I think Kal'tsit will probably regularly contract R6 squad to do some bodyguard jobs in urban environments since these 4 have the best training when it comes to hostage rescue, urban defense, and urban warfare. oh and to keep other Doctors from getting their greasy fingers away from the innocent Durins. Ash and Kal'tsit also give off gotta-get-job-done energy so they probably know their priorities. I made blitz hold his gun since rescuing hostages in R6 automatically pulls out your pistol as you escort them, teehee. I contemplated on giving Frost her spas12 shotgun instead of her pistol secondary but i was too lazy and thought it wouldn't be as discreet for a resort :p hope you appreciate Tachanka belly woo!

Hey uh kind of out of the blue but like I'm kind of curious, do you have any guns you would consider personal favourites for any reason?
i am absolutely wonderfully glad you asked i'm about to infodump.
CW for Firearms under the cut.
First of all i'm an absolute sucker for russian and russian allies (or former russian allies) weapons. I'm talking all the former soviet states, former USSR, china, north korea, the list goes on. The most famous of those guns would obviously be the AK-47 (or more precisely, i love the AKM, the 1959 modernisation of the assault rifle) and its little sister, the 5.45x39 AK74 (recognizable by the much more gentle curve on the magazine. As the 7.62x39 caliber used by the AK47/AKM is heavily tapered, its magazine is vary famously curved). But that doesn't stop there. I love the various AK copies made all across the world. For standardisation purposes, all allies of the USSR needed to use the same cartridge, and even the same weapons. So the USSR shared the blueprints for the AK47 to many countries, which all made their own version, sometimes with slight modifications. Exception made for Czechoslovakia, who already had world renowned weapon manufactures, and who were allowed to use their own Vz58 rifle, using the same cartridge and somewhat similar look (i love that it looks like if someone who had never really seen an AK47 was asked to draw an AK47). So I love pretty much all those AKs and AK variants (i will definitely list some of my favorites.)
But that's not all, because all through the life of the kalashnikov family of rifles (still in use today in many countries!), attempts have been made to replace it. Between 1980 and 1994, Soviets/Russians held a series of trials, with many gun designers submitting different prototypes to try and improve on the AK, especially to improve hit probability (because recoil makes hitting a target very hard when burst firing). Some of these never left the state of prototypes, but some of these were actually used in service, such as the AEK-971. It features a system of counterweights, that move forward as the bolt moves backward, to minimize felt recoil.
sidenote : the winner of the abakan trials was the prototype named the "ASM", designed by a Gennadiy Nikolayevich Nikonov, which is now known under the name AN-94. it did not replace the AK74 as it is much too expensive and complicated, but it is very interesting nonetheless
once again i will also list some of my favorites AK-derivative prototypes.
it is 1AM and i do not have time to make detailed paragraphs about other favorite weapons so im just gonna say names now, the PL-15 is beautiful, I love the HK USP Tactical, but not as much as the FNX45, love the AR18, big fan of the FNC (i mean i love the FAL so obviously), my favorite shotgun is the remington 870 in a long barrel long mag tube configuration but the SPAS12 is a close second. i think the FN Maximi looks amazing, i love the mk22 "hush puppy", i LOVE the PTRD because of both the story (or legend idk) behind it and the fact that it looks like a big tube with shit sticking out of it, love the Glock 19, i have a soft spot for the G3 (especially the G3SG1) and also the HK21 and HK33. although i'm not a big fan of bullpups i really like the AUG (specially the A2). It might be because i'm belgian but i kinda like the P90, it's like a weird love hate relationship, same with the MP7 (it's a cool looking thing but you know, 5.7x28 could have been a standard), while it is very classic and we see everywhere, i love a good ar15, not gonna lie (love the old school stuff like the Colt CAR-15). Big fan of the Accuracy International Snipers, especially the Arctic Warfare Magnum, i really like the older SIG rifles like the 550 series.
I will definitely continue on this post another day thank you so much for asking me about this.

Pyscho, Carrie, and Last Man On Earth for Minerva :D
Horror movies and talking about my s/is. Two of my favorite things!
Psycho (1960): Excluding your f/o, does your s/i get along well with anyone else in canon? Is there anyone they don’t like? Is there someone that doesn’t like them? Minerva gets along amazingly with Hurk and Sharky, as well as Mary May Fairgrave. I suppose i could also put the three fangs for hire here as well, Boomer the good boy, Peaches the mountain lion, and Cheeseburger the bear. The next step down in friendship level would be anyone she works with : Whitehorse, Pratt, Hudson.  As far as not getting along with, that's also a relatively simple one. Joseph, for more than the obvious reasons. Minerva thinks he is the most annoying man to ever walk the face of the planet, on top of the whole doomsday cult thing. Maybe a shocking one that she doesn't like is Adelaide. The woman is a bit much, even for Minerva. The feeling is mutual, but Addie tolerates the deputy for getting her helicopter back.
Carrie (1976): What’s that one thing that your s/i is always associated with? Even if some people aren’t very familiar with them, what’s that one thing your s/i is known for? A cry of hope across the resistance has become three words. "It's the Deputy!"  Minerva is known mostly for her actions. Her enemies know her by the way she can systemically clear a base to reclaim it for the resistance, and her allies know her as the avenging angel who swoops in to save the day when she sees someone in need. Those closest to Minerva would tell you the most recognizable things about the woman is her custom SPAS12 shotgun, decorated in flames, her affinity for hitting peggies with a shovel she painted a smiley face on, the animal usually following her around, and her tendency to take the charm from peggie vehicles she crashes as a trophy, of sorts.
The Last Man on Earth (1964): In a scenario where your s/i never meant your f/o, what would they be doing now? Would much change about them? A scenario where John and Minerva never met is more than likely a world where Eden's Gate did not settle in Hope County. She'd be just another Hope County Sheriff's Deputy, drinking with her friends on the weekend and trying to stop Sharky from burning the whole damn county down. Not much would change about Minerva however, she'd still be the same girl blaring classic rock way too loud as she drives around Hope County in her beat up old mid-70s Silverado, considering that without a holy war to fight, she'd probably have the spare time to get it running again.
Thanks for the ask!!
