the reason many people in depressive states react with hostility when presented with good and useful advice (e.g have you tried exercise/have you reached out to a friend) is that everyone intrinsically knows that there is an element of willpower to their condition. it is kind of humiliating to recognize that there are steps you could easily take to get on the right track but you are for whatever reason unable or unwilling to do so. instead of “you just don’t fucking know what it’s like,” a much more honest response to the advice I mentioned before is “no, I don’t want to do that, it feels much safer and easier to wallow.”
