Terraforming Biodiversity
The seedships that arrived at Alpha Centauri had limited space on board for genetic samples, with parahuman and uplift DNA given the highest priority. The unfortunate result being that the vast majority of Old Terra's rich biodiversity died with that planet, leaving Secland and later terraformed worlds an extremely limited gene pool to work with.
During the terraforming process scientists struggled to fill in the niches left open by a gene bank weighed heavily towards domesticated and laboratory test animals. The possibility of making "downlifted" versions of the uplifted species was proposed but almost universally rejected by the uplifts in question. Instead, the Bureau of Ecosystem Management offered jobs to uplifts filling the ecological roles of their progenitors. This strategy worked surprisingly well, especially with apex predators such as dolphins.
Another approach was to modify the animals they did have using the non-human genes that had been incorporated into parahuman genomes. For instance Secland "bats" are actually heavily modified mice while the procyon is a fox given hand-like paws and a ringed tail.
Late in the terraforming process scientists made a breakthrough that would simplify later efforts. Large complexes of genes that could be activated or deactivated with specific epigenetic triggers were added to the genomes of many species that could produce massive physiological changes in later generations. That way a single breeding colony of ultra-ferrets could give birth to 20-centimeter long mini-ferrets, semi-aquatic ferr-otters, or two-meter mega wolverines as the ecosystem needed.
List of source species:
Mammals:
Cat (Felis catus)
Cattle (Bos taurus)
Dog (Canis lupus familiaris)
Ferret (Mustela furo)
Red fox (Vulpes vulpes)
House mouse (Mus musculus)

Sheep (Ovis aries)
Birds:
Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus)
Canary (Serinus canaria)
Chicken (Gallus domesticus)
Rock dove (Columba livia)
Zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata)
Reptiles:
Green anole (Anolis carolinensis)
Spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus)
Fish:
Goldfish (Carassius auratus)
Zebrafish (Danio rerio)
Amphibians:
African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis)
Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)
Bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana)
Tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum)
Arthropods:
Fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster)
House cricket (Acheta domesticus)

I can't art, but I made a Welcome home OC!
Tumblr media
His name is Ozz, he's a half vampire bat half fruit bat (meaning he only drinks fruit juice!) and lives in the rafters of Poppy's barn.
Made to show children that most things aren't as scary as they first appear, he often helps fellow characters to feel better when they have to do something they find scary by finding ways to brighten up their bad situations or feel better while they get through it (often relating to the dark, medical matters, or inclement weather, but not exclusively).
He always wears a brightly colored hat that is apparently unaffected by gravity, though this is never directly addressed within the show. Most of the time Ozz's feet are not visible and his wings are wrapped about him to make him easier to puppet, but he's shown to have massive wings when he's unfurled (which he often allows other characters to temporarily use a section of as a cloak, blanket, or shield).
The fabric swatches that make up the puppet's rainbow wings apparently changed frequently, likely because the rods used to move them would damage the material. He does not have visible eyes, rather a set of spectacles with colors that swirl in the lenses. One of the lenses has a spiderweb crack running across it, but it is unknown if this is part of the original design or simply due to wear.

Star Trek characters as Octonauts characters AU: an update:
TOS crew:
Kirk: Golden retriever.
Spock: Black cat.
Bones: North American River Otter. An old friend of Ranger Marsh, with whom he shares similar opinions about technology.
Uhura: African Grass Owl.
Scotty: Scottish Wildcat.
Sulu: White-tailed Deer.
Chekov: Eurasian pine marten. I originally had him be a Siberian Lynx (since he’s from Russia) but it didn’t quite work. Chekov needs to be a small lanky boy and that is not what lynxes are. Pine martens, however…
Chapel: Tawny Owl.
TNG crew:
Picard: European River Otter
Riker: Alaskan Malamute dog
Data: Still an android, but in this version, he’s modeled after a short-eared owl. His brother Lore is modeled after a long-eared owl.
Tasha: Black-tailed jackrabbit
Geordi: Serval cat. Born blind, but uses a high-tech visor to see. Best friends with Data.
Beverly and Wesley Crusher: Red foxes. Wes has darker, almost brown fur.
Worf: Fisher. (A type of mustelid.)
Deanna: Spotted Owl
DS9 crew:
Ben and Jake Sisko: Swamp rabbits— same species as Tweak and Marsh. The Siskos have dark brown fur, rather than green.
Jadzia: Red Salamander
Garak: Lizard (doesn’t matter what species)
Major Kira: Gray Fox
Odo: Still a Changeling in this AU. Usually assumes the form of a beige-colored cat.
Ezri: Spotted Salamander.
Bashir: Sea Otter
O’Brien: European Hare
Quark (and all other Ferengi characters): Fruit bats. With gigantic ears.
Voyager Crew:
Janeway: Red Fox
Chakotay: Canada Lynx
Tom Paris: Dog.
Harry Kim: Sea Otter
Neelix: Fishing Cat
Kes: Brush Rabbit
Seven of Nine: Cat, with cybernetic implants.
B’Elanna: Badger.
Tuvok: Spectacled Owl
The Doctor: Hologram, takes the appearance of a penguin. (Which looks a lot like Peso’s species.)
Connections to the Octonauts and Octo Agents:
Scotty is an old friend of Shellington, and even recommended him for the position of the Octopod’s head scientist. Barnacles invited Scotty to be Chief Engineer, but Scotty declined the offer. After all, he’d seen Tweak’s work firsthand. The Octonauts would be in good care with her as its engineer.
Similar to Barnacles, Chekov was an old student of Professor Natquik. He’s always boasting about how everything great was invented in Russia.
Voyager’s Doctor was modeled after one of Peso’s many cousins. Despite being a program of a social species, he does have trouble actually socializing.
Jadzia is one of Dashi’s friends from school.
Ben Sisko and Ranger Marsh have been friends for a long time. And their kids get along quite well! Tweak is older than Jake by quite a bit.
Bashir is one of Shellington’s old classmates. The two of them bonded over their love of science and their sea otter heritage.

@albertkensington said: "I-I didn't know where else to go." Says man who never knows where to go, frequently.
from send ‘i didn’t know where else to go’ to show up at my muse’s door [accepting!!]
Tumblr media
Alberich taps one long-nailed fingertip to his chin, theatrically contemplating the other’s words. How honest he seems, truly… and yet so unsure. Shy, coy, perhaps cowardly…? No, no, he has yet to run after all… So does that make him, quite simply, stupid? Or has he a devious plot behind those spectacled eyes?”
Hm…
What an interesting person.
“I see… and so you decided that ‘over the banister’ was the most logical option of where to head next…?
“…”
Fingers then snap, the index and middle pointing like a fired pistol in this newcomer’s direction. “Unique. Adventurous. Daring. I like it. Outside the box, as they say — or, well, over the railing, as it were.”
A pause to laugh at his own joke, then the red-clad phantom slams the butt of his staff against the ground, a clang ringing through the room as he does so. Glintstones jingle. A small powder of frost falls from the sceptre’s branches and falls like snow onto Alberich’s boots. The sorcerer shifts his weight casually, keeping his scythe holstered to his back… for now.
“Are you clueless, then?” he asks. “About your purpose here? And what all this means? Or are you just trying to trick me into thinking you are?” A bat of the hand. “Ah, I’ll fool you not: though I’ve picked my fair share of devious fruits from their brambled bushes of lies before, I don’t claim to be good at it. You could lie to me if you wanted to. Really! I might even believe it! It’s more fun that way, I’ve found. When people lie, I mean. Go on. Lie to me. Make it a good one.”
His question got buried by babble, but it’s still there… somewhere. He sways his hips gently as he waits for an answer.

Allaster Constancia is a vampire inspired by the Spectacled Flying Fox. A budding botanist and dandy freshly moved to the town of Gearhorse Gulch from Queensland, he doesn't know much about the field yet and is hoping to broaden and legitimize his research by collecting and describing the most dangerous flora in the desert. He simply MUST have this for his menagerie.

@areapermostcapricious asked the summoner:
“So the purpose of the spectacles with the single lens,” hand on his cheek, elbow on the table. “Purely for aesthetics? Or is there a practical reason behind such a fashion choice?” And will it be yet another reason for Kuja to make fun of Black Wind?
Kuja is being a fabulous lil shit once again
Tumblr media
There was one thing Kuja should have learned by now: and it was the fact that asking Black Wind about his fashion choices was the kind of endeavor not likely to bear fruit.
Then again, similar could be said about asking Black Wind about anything. Finding him in a mood for idle blather was a rare occurrence indeed. Additionally: the Hunter of Chaos was one such man who could be mocked ceaselessly and not bat an eye.
Unless said Wind-mockery came from White Cloud, but we are not presently discussing the matters of weather.
He turned his head slightly, only half-acknowledging the other mage's presence.
Tumblr media
"....You done?" He asked in perfect deadpan. First, his trousers - now, this. The gunmage's bored eyes almost seemed to wordlessly say, If you have any more useless questions, now is the time to get them out of the way.
Not that he would feel particularly inclined to indulge them. He mostly wanted the other to finally run out of ammo and find value in silence.
