Dear Vector Prime,
Do Cybertronians attach much importance to paintjob, as part of the 'self'? Is changing a paintjob ever used as a disguise?
Dear Chromatic Champion,
Some Cybertronians attribute great importance to their paintjobs—perhaps most notably, adherents of Spectralism may repaint their bodies based on significant events in their life. During wartime, Autobots and Decepticons operating in unusual terrain have taken on camouflage that allow them to blend in with their surroundings: for instance, the Decepticon Predators took on unique color schemes while operating in the colorful nebulas of the Skomiloch Territories, while Optimus Prime’s group of Autobots adopted white paint jobs while searching for Polarclaw in the high Arctic. Some Cybertronians such as Wasp and Shockwave have used electronic paintjobs to augment their disguises or even pass themselves off as Cybertronians who share the same body frame.
And, of course, there are those conceited Cybertronians such as Knock Out who attach great importance to their paintjobs—not out of any kind of utility, of course, but merely as a tribute to their own vanity.

Did someone ask for more humanformers designs? Here’s Drift, one of my personal favorites to draw! An underground leader in disguise, Drift acts as a florist! His group particularly focuses on helping marginalized communities and underfunded neighborhoods. However, he can still cut off a few appendages if someone gets too close. He is happily married to Ratchet!

The Origins of the Circle of Light: A Hasbro Show Most of You Probably Never Watched
I know the Visionaries was sort of a flop when it aired originally in the 80s, or at least, I remember it as having mostly flopped-- it couldn’t really compete with the other great shit on TV at the time, not even other Hasbro properties
if I remember right it also aired at a timeslot (in my region at least) where it competed directly with Thundercats, which, uh, good luck beating Thundercats LOL
but for context, the first two episodes (one, two) help with figuring out the basics, if you can get through it lmao
summary of the show:
Tumblr media
tl;dr think medieval magic but also future sci-fi Power Rangers but also Animorphs if it were mystical and not necessarily alien stuff but also a touch of He-Man but with an ensemble cast sprinkle sort of reminiscent of GI Joe complete with some tough guy characters but also a little bit of She-Ra with a couple female characters, then sprinkle the whole thing with Dungeons and Dragons in terms of the magic elements but also Super Cool Rad Future Gear because It Was The 80s and Everything is the Future
and of course the whole thing had extremely 80s writing and generally pretty cheesy dialogue
it was pretty nuts, lmao
and you might be wondering why I’m talking about this on my Transformers blog
WELL
in a Jimmy Neutron-style brain blast, out of nowhere, I remembered that the Circle of Light was a whole thing on that show!
which was also made by Hasbro, because of course it was
if I remember correctly, it also had overlapping production dates with Transformers, for the only season Visionaries ever got in 1987 (so concept/production probably ran for a couple years prior as well, but that’s just my guess in terms of development time)
and in the IDW 1 era, they even did a Visionaries comic crossover with Transformers (although they didn’t mention the Circle of Light in the Visionaries context in this mini series if I remember correctly, I’ll have to re-read it to double check)
BUT
the Circle of Light concept was essentially done first in Visionaries:
it’s worth remembering that the full title of the original show was Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light
on the show, there were two groups of Knights, one of which was called the Spectral Knights (reminds me of how Spectralism was popular among the Knights of the Circle of Light in IDW 1 Transformers)
in the original Visionaries, the Circle of Light -- and this is really pushing my memory to try to remember this because it’s been MANY years since I watched this show LMAO -- was the magical basis for the Knights to form and be granted their respective powers, and was also effectively a way to refer to the Knights/their power-sources/the magic lore behind their team of Knights, and also referred to a sort of prior King Arthur/Round Table of Knights kind of situation as well (think spiritual/magic elders but also their own current group could be referred to as this, if I recall correctly-- I could be fucking this part up, though)
their powers were also directly related to an energy/magic that was essentially gifted to them but also based on their innate personal “magic” (personality traits), which is somewhat similar to how the swords used by the Transformers Circle of Light Knights draws upon the wielder’s spark energy.
my memory is probably somewhat shitty regarding Visionaries, and there’s fairly little information about this series because it ran for a short period of time, it doesn’t have the biggest fanbase, and compared to other shows being aired at the time it’s a little more of a rough re-watch so I’m not sure how much fun it would be to go watch the whole thing again to confirm any details
but I’m not the only one who’s noticed the similarities to the Transformers Circle of Light -- the TF Wiki page for the Circle of Light also notes that the concept existed previously in Visionaries!
so it’s not just me, and since Visionaries was never overwhelmingly popular, I just figured I’d point it out here. I’m glad someone over at TF Wiki added this as a note.
it would have been interesting, maybe, to see some of the Visionaries in the IDW 1 crossover maybe interact with a Spectralist, or perhaps even Drift or another Knight from Crystal City if that would be feasible
but the storyline they went with was pretty decent, and I get that it was probably not possible within the plot they were going for or the characters they had available to work with!
either way, hopefully this is a little interesting to those of you who never got to see Visionaries, or just aren’t familiar with it at all. <3

Una MacGlone+Jim McEwan - a whole other vibe
Una MacGlone double bass (with and without preparations) Jim McEwan piano (with and without preparations), dulcitone, objects: tape recorders, radios, crinkly bag
This album is a collage of recordings and sound treatments. We had two very fruitful days in the Ramshorn Theatre (thanks Gerry Rossi!) where we recorded several improvisations with minimal or no discussion. After some time, we listened to the recordings and chose our favourite tracks to provide the basis for another layer of improvising, again with the briefest of chats beforehand.
We intended to capture the experience of being in different psychological states such as disconnection and nostalgia in 'a different kind of everyday'. 'wintermoon' takes the open remoteness of the Hoy coast and the North Sea as inspiration. 'a whole other vibe' depicts the feeling of how it felt to walk home from the CCA on a frosty night after a GIOfest gig. Playing music and being with your friends combine to bring another kind of consciousness where you see and hear your city as a new place. Thinking about how light may sound after many miles of travelling, 'sparkle' is an imagining on what starlight sounds like after centuries and many miles have passed.

Maria W Horn & Vilhelm Bromander - Earthward Arcs
Stockholm-based composers and musicians Maria W Horn and Vilhelm Bromander present their first collaborative release titled ‘Earthward Arcs’. The two pieces on this tape date back to 2019 and focus on spectral explorations in between the realms of the acoustic and the electronic. Using small snippets of Maria W Horn’s SuperCollider code as a starting point, the algorithmically generated sketches developed as Vilhelm Bromander’s unique approach to the double bass – his focus on acoustic detail, intonation and timbre – came into the picture. The title track focuses on beating patterns and difference tones, as the electronics and the double bass gradually shift roles across the 18-minute-long dynamic, textural drone. “Mycelial Bloom” employs a five-limit tuning system founded on a single tone sequence, which, when modulated, unlocks unique emotional resonances. Strikingly direct, yet limitless in its depth, this piece is imbued with a haunting, cinematic magnificence. Together, the two tracks showcase the compositional prowess, tonal mastery and inimitable restraint of these two Swedish artists, and offer a first brief glimpse of their collaboration.

Finland / Lebanon, 2006, spectralism / opera This is my first full-on encounter with spectralism, a form of music that favors timbre and texture over the more generally appealing elements of melody and harmony. I assume adding opera into the mix just creates another level separating this recording from what normally reaches the ears of people on a daily basis. When I read that the origins of…

I really liked the idea of half-ghost Jason, so I did my take on a design for him 😀
Unlike Danny, Jason's halfa mode is closer to Vlad since the death and rebirth didn't happen at the same time.
It looks more like what the person wants to project as vibe?
The spectral cloak was initially there look more ghostly, but then my brain cooked up the idea that it acted almost like a bunch of whiskers, sensing ectoplasm or potential threats around him (like an octopus, idk if it's funny or cursed 😅)
Jason would probably use (maybe abuse a bit) of his ghostly powers after Danny somehow purified the Lazarus waters in his system (Danny, head in his hands : I didn't mean to perform accidental halfa creation).

The Bats are not having a good time. There is someone killing off criminal left and right in Crime Alley and the culprit is extremely efficient and clearly trained.
No sign of entry at the crime scene. Not even a spec of dirt left behind.
Crime Alley has become suspiciously calm recently.
They whisper about a boogeyman, a red ghost.
(I honestly really want to continue this ❤) Edit: Here is Part 02!
