Made it through the first week of school. So far my delightful, sweet, hilarious, and oh so devastatingly intelligent little class of ASD kindergarteners have given me the following challenges to contend with.
1. The twins had lice
2. Mr. J won't leave the playground, ever. Timers, warnings, none of it helps. He'll stop playing when he's ready to stop which is not good at school.
3. Miss A has a daily 9am panic when she realizes mom isn't coming back right away.
4. Mr. A steals everyone's chips during lunch and cries when we give them back to the original owners.
5. Miss E scribbled on her arms so she could continue "washing" after I cut her off. She "washes" her hands at every opportunity usually to the point where her little fingers are pruny (don't worry I'm working on water sensory options for her).
6. They have figured out the touch screen and keep skipping to the end of the videos I play.
7. Someone ate an eraser and spit out the bits all over the room TWICE...they were sneaky we never saw them do it. Also before you ask they HAVE tons of chewy toys in my room whomever it is seems to prefer eraser.
8. The twins used the bubble solution as soap. They scrubbed up real good including their hair.
9. The whole class collectively loves grapes but not their grapes only someone else's grapes.
10. Every single one of these 4 kiddos is the cutest fucking kid ever and makes it impossible to get mad. I'm exhausted but happy.
Bonus: The two 1st graders in my room have decided they're big kids and are being the BEST helpers. They hold the kinders hands in the halls, help me and our para find missing shoes, collect lunches from the cafeteria and are generally doing so freaking much to help even as they contend with their own ASD related challenges.

So last week I ran a total of 8 sessions in 5 hours and I served more than 80 children with special needs, mainly autism. I only had general information of the whole group of children and I didn’t know anyone at all! Surprisingly, the sessions went exceptionally well and I thought I should write down the strategies that I didn’t even know I did, but somehow I did naturally within the sessions. There were some meltdowns and chaos, of course, but the sessions all ended calmly and well. The moment the children walked out of the classroom, I could tell that they were satisfied in terms of their sensory, cognitive, emotional and social needs. How I wish I knew all these when I first worked in special education settings. Now I wish for you to know these strategies, for a great start of a new school term. #specialeducationsg #earlychildhoodsg #earlyinterventionsg #preschoolsg #kindergartensg #teachersofinstagrams #preschoolteachersofinstagram #conbriomusictherapy #musictherapist #musictherapy #musictherapystudent #spedteacher #sped #eipic #eipicsg https://www.instagram.com/p/CfO5xMKv4K3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Celebrating every student's potential with a smile that speaks volumes. As a special education teacher
I wear 'Inclusion Matters' not just on my shirt but in my heart. 🌟 Every day is a new opportunity to make learning accessible and joyful for all. Let's champion the cause of inclusivity in education because every child deserves a seat in the classroom of life.
Looks more and more every day like I'll be the only Special Education teacher in my school next year (it will be my second year teaching) and more and more like we're going to be short 4 or so paras.
And I live in a state that actually pays living wages to teachers and decent wages to paras.
Getting real fed up with the conservative b.s. about kids being SOOOOOO important that they can't allow abortion at all but then then stonewalling every bill and spending plan that isn't for police or expanding the military.
