don’t get tempted to change and go and become a speech therapist so I can treat kids with more understanding than I had as a kid. it’s tempting but self don’t do it

A student has picked up a script from me. She asks me many why questions each day… “why is he crying?” “Why can’t I run in the road?” “Why did mommy put the stuffies away?” Typically if I’m not sure of an answer or it’s not school appropriate I tell her “these things happen sometimes.” I also like to ask what she thinks the answer is because sometimes her asking a very random question is her way of bringing up something that happened at home. Yesterday she told me “these things happen,” which I’m glad I gave her an answer for when she doesn’t have one but knowing that I actually have an impact on these kids is wild.

Growing older sucks. First my tics, and now it's looking likely I have PCOS. Am I just gonna keep getting older and keep developing lifelong conditions until one of them kills me or what?

About me
So a little about me, or as much as I feel comfy giving out on Tumblr.
I'm a speech-language pathologist clinical fellow, about 5 months into CFY. I had been chronicling little bits of my grad school journey on my main blog in-between random silly stuff and Star Trek geekery.
I graduated in May of 2023 from my alma mater (went there for both bachelor's and master's). However, this was after being rejected by them and the other school I applied to my first cycle. I regrouped, rebuilt myself, reapplied, and got in off a waiting list. (I say this to give all my young future grad school applicants hope.)
I work in pediatric private practice, my dream setting. I also used to work in pediatric home health, which wasn't bad but was challenging.
I am self-diagnosed AuDHD, and attempting to find a suitable path for medical diagnosis.
I am a non-traditional grad; I began undergrad later than most and was the second oldest student in my cohort.
I'm extremely geeky and goofy
I identify as a demigirl, which is a non-binary gender identity. I'm not publicly out as I live in an area that is not always the kindest to LGBTQIA, but I find it wise to let y'all know this here. I am barely learning about what it means to embrace who I am.
I'm of Mexican descent and extremely passionate about bilingual advocacy
My favorite areas of the field are AAC, autism and ADHD, pediatric feeding, and early intervention. Ask me about these and I'll talk your ear off.
I started this sideblog as I began to run into more and more aspiring SLPs on Tumblr, many of them looking at grad school, many neurodiverse. I wanted to share my experiences as like a practical guide to help others.

I would just like to share that, if you have taken testosterone and are now unhappy with your voice, voice training is some good stuff. It WORKS. I won't say it's easy, but for me it's been well worth the time and effort.
You will never get your "real" voice back, it's true, but you aren't stuck sounding male forever if that's not something you want 💕

I’m obviously incapable of speaking for Malcolm X but I would like to think he wouldn’t have wanted speech language pathologists to force autistic kids to type his name on an iPad

me: okay so i’ve narrowed down the wildwood cast list to a science and these are my accurate approximations for which actor is going to be who, so we start with the top of the list; carey mulligan is likely going to voicd alexandra, and while i’ve had some deliberation on who mahershala ali is going to voice but i really hope he voices brendan—don’t get me wrong i also see him as owl rex, but i honestly think that richard e. grant or tom waits would make a great owl rex. those two guys are older, and owl rex is supposed to be a wisely old bird right? right. so i think it’s obvious to anyone that peyton elizabeth lee and jacob tremblay are going to be voicing prue and curtis respectively. now here’s where it gets a little dicey, but i still have my rationale folks; awkwafina is going to voice a bird character. enver? possibly, who knows, anyways—another character i’m fairly certain who their voice actor is is iphigenia. tantoo cardinal perfectly sounds like what i imagined the character to sound, and if i’m correct that’s a perfect cast. i feel like angela bassett and maya erskine are going to be voicing some supporting mystics of sorts, and amandla stenberg, she’d be a kickass aisling. charlie day, jake johnson, jemaine clement immediately getting assigned bandits. i could be completely wrong with all of these but i can pull things from both their voices and appearance and mannerisms that match those of the characters in the book. so, continuing on i really think th

wait your tags cut out in the post with the baby asking about the light bulb pls keep going it was interesting, also anything else you wanna say as a speech pathologist is cool af too
Hey!
Basically, not totally related to that post, but when you're a baby, you hear all the different human noises around you and your brain goes "oh hey, it's going to be necessary for me to be able to make that sound at some point" and it starts to figure out the motor plans it needs to get your tongue, lips, soft palate etc to make those sounds. After a certain critical period, if your baby brain hasn't heard the sound enough, it goes "eh, we don't need to know how to do this".
So if you think about languages that require you to be able to roll your 'r' sounsd. If you haven't grown up hearing enough people around you rolling their 'r's, you quite likely won't physically be able to do it. Which means you might suck at French.
You can still learn how to understand and speak the language. But your brain doesn't learn motor patterns and languages as easily as an adult as it does when you're a kid.
Babies are sponges.
I'm not a Speech pathologist yet, but only have a few more weeks until my last exams!! Super excited!
Feel free to ask me questions, I get very excited about speech and language these days.

🍓 Triona
So from a Doylistic angle, me putting in song lyrics is because I’m not very confident at writing my own lyrics, but from a Watsonian angle, Tríona has always lowkey stimmed (she’s AuDHD, Im giving myself representation) with extremely mild palilalia (repeating one’s own words/phrases at different volumes and speeds; part of her built up shame reserves is from people being cruel about this vocal tic [because it’s a speech disorder like stuttering and echolalia] and her forcing herself to be “better”. She’s gotten very good at masking and “being normal” about it) and thus just zoning out and stringing words together.
So in private when she lets herself not mask, she just sort of stumbles onto these combinations that sound good to her and she remembers them to an extent, then when she’s casting magic, all she knows is that she needs a somatic component to channel her intent, so she just starts stimming with those combinations to both provide that somatic component and help her focus.
It’s less that her autistic tendencies make her magic here (because GODS am I tired of that trope) and more that she’s utilizing her autistic tendencies to be the best mage she personally can be. She just ends up with some real bangers for somatic components (I’m sure this won’t end up biting her in the ass at some point, I’m sure someone won’t ask her to sing in front of an actual audience, I’m very sure people won’t take her as an actual singer 😇).

Out of the ridiculous things I've heard lately the most ridiculous is stem cell treatment for autism.
I mean you're legit scamming people for millions. The cause of autism isn't even completely known yet and claiming such a treatment cures or significantly reduces it is absolutely vile. It also propagates the myth that it is a disease which it is not.
It's not really even FDA approved for ASD yet. Instead of relying on such weakly researched procedures a better alternative is.
• Educational interventions such as TEACCH.
• Speech and Language therapy.
• Occupational therapy.
• Use of AACs (alternative augmentative communication)
