…hi there! I love your writing style neighbor! I was wondering if you could write a welcome home fic for me!! Wally x a gn reader that Uses music to express emotion, like they always have headphones on and communicate with signals and when others don’t understand they get frustrated? Maybe Wally witnesses them and the reader FINALLY takes off their headphones and talks?
-⭐️star anon ⭐️
This is such a cute idea star anon!! Thanks for saying you like my style!! I wouldn't say I have them on quite to this degree, but I do have my headphones in pretty often!! I know at least one person (*cough cough* mother-) that would consider it a genuine problem, heh. I hope I can use my experience to write this fic for you!! Enjoy!!
(♡˙︶˙♡)
Sing me to Sleep🍎🎧🎵
☆°•☆°•☆°•☆
It was such a nice day out, I just had to have the perfect music to match. Something cheery and bouncy, that made me want to swing my legs on the park bench I was sitting on.
I took a deep breath in and tasted the fresh air, clean and sweet. The picture perfect day with the perfect soundtrack. I wondered if I took off my headphones if I'd hear birdsong.
But before I could entertain that thought any further, I spotted a figure on the sidewalk opposite me.
It was Julie in front of her house, practicing jump rope. I hopped off the bench and made my way over. She waved as I approached, smiling, and I waved back.
"What's the game today, y/n?" She asked.
I didn't respond, but I picked up a spare jump rope off the ground.
"Oh, sure, we can jump together! Bet you can't beat my best score! 47," she said smugly as she started jumping.
I jumped too, keeping in time with the beat of my music. I jumped until the song was over, and the next and the next...
I hadn't even realized until she was shouting and shaking my shoulder a bit that Julie was trying to talk to me. I turned around to see two hula-hoops in her arm.
After a moment of attempted communication I understood that she was offering me a hoop, and I took it. We hooped for a while, me with my eyes closed.
Eventually the weather turned sour somehow while I wasn't looking, because I felt a raindrop on my arm. I looked up, and sure enough there were clouds covering the sky. Julie was picking up her things and putting them away, and after I helped her get everything out of the rain I waved goodbye and started for my house.
I thought to myself that I could've helped her better. I knew it wasn't her fault, but if she could've understood that I would've stopped what I was doing to help her...
The rain had picked up to a drizzle, and I hoped I could make it. The song playing seemed to spur me on, with its fast tempo urging my feet to speed from a walk to a jog.
I heard something that wasn't my music, though. I slowed and turned my head to see one of my neighbors, Wally, struggling with a painter's easel in his front yard. He heard me approaching, apparently, because he turned to face me.
"Oh, y/n. You wouldn't mind kindly helping me get my masterpiece out of the rain, would you? It's not finished, and it would be such a shame if it got spoiled now..." He turned to face it and put his hand on his chin.
"I don't think I can carry it inside on my own and not smudge the paint. The canvas is just too big."
I put my hands on one side and looked across at him, and he turned to me and looked me in the eyes. I smiled at him, and he seemed to understand.
"Okay, I'll lift this side, and you get that one. Ready?"
We picked it up effortlessly, perfectly in sync. We took his painting inside and then all his supplies, and though we managed to save his artwork, his hairdo which he had clearly worked so hard to maintain had fallen from its pompador-like shape into something floppy and sad, covering over half his face.
"Well," he sighed. "I do very much appreciate it, neighbor. Thanks a lot for your help. Say," he said, putting his hand on my shoulder.
"You're probably cold and wet. Would you like to come inside and I could make warm drinks?"
I nodded, and we headed inside to do just that. When I was seated at the table with my mug in my hand and Wally at the other end of the table, he smiled and thanked me again for helping him.
"How's your... oh, well, I suppose you're not one for conversation, are you y/n..."
I slid my headphones off my head, leaving them around my neck.
"It's delicious. Thank you very much."
Wally looked dumbfounded, his mouth open wide.
"Why... why, y/n! I'm very glad you like it! But... if you don't mind me asking... what made you decide to finally take those off?"
...
"I like the sound of the rain."
...
"And... if I may say, you have a very lovely voice."
"As do you, Wally."
I smiled.
☆°•☆°•☆°•☆
Here it is, star anon!! I was a bit stuck at the beginning but I think I found it at the end!! I think it turned out pretty cute, at least with Wally and the reader!! I tried to show that he was able to connect with them right away! I hope you liked it, I'd like to say thanks for requesting it!! I look forward to doing more in the future!! Much love!!

It is well known that Sagittarians make great teachers, lawyers, performers, comedians, artists, philosophers, leaders and musicians. And even with Mercury in Sagittarius, great writers too. So that runs the gamut. So this is a comprehensive round up just in case you missed how multi faceted this zodiac sign actually is, its range is wide. Top of the list are the giants like William Blake who straddles poetry, art and mysticism, and Ludwig Beethoven whose work is monumental and will still be listened to in hundreds of years. But there was  also Oliver Messiaen who composed music  La Constellation du Sagittaire which was his zodiac sign.
Tumblr media
proteusastrologydotcodotuk.files.wordpress.com
Sagittarians make great magicians like Franz Bardon.  He was much less known than Aleister Crowley, but nevertheless regarded as one of the most important occultists of the 20th Century, and still we have Dion Fortune, let’s not forget, who was also a Sagittarian and an acute psychologist. for a modern Sagittarian magicians look to  Uri Geller. Needless to say Sagittarians also make great astrologers like Robert Hand Nik Kollerstrom and Karen Hamaker-Zondag and these are only the known charts.
Dec 2nd, is the birthday of Britney Spears, who in spite of her wobbly personality is still much loved and, when on form, delivers the goods as a performer. But so many Sagittarian singers. Note also Christine Aguilera, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Nicki Minaj- who all love to perform. But before them some of the greats of old include Frank Sinatra, Dionne Warwick and thunder thighs (Sagittarius is linked to the thighs) herself, Tina Turner who became the ultimate Buddhist fulfilling the yearnings of her spiritual nature.
There are also some oddball singers Little Richard, Frank Zappa, Ted Nugent and Tom Waits, and there are two outstanding opera stars Maria Callas, whose voice no one can match, and Jose Carreras.
Sagittarians can even be great hedonists crazies who go off piste from time to time, but are still entertaining. There’s Jim Morrison of the Doors, Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath, Jay-Z and wild man Billy Idol. Some Sagittarians in this category can come across with a certain edgy swagger like Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.
Then there are philosopher teachers, leader and gurus like Osho, Bruce Lee and B.K.S. Iyengar also embody many quintessentially Sagittarian traits as ultimate teachers all offering some form of physical practice yoga and martial arts-which marries the higher and lower self. Iyengar said ‘my body is my temple and the asanas are my prayers’ but he also said, as a true Sagittarian, that ‘honesty is essential’ in teaching. With Mercury in Sagittarius he could sometimes be difficult to understand when speaking. But there’s also wiseacre, Noam Chomsky, who functions in dual areas as linguistic philosopher and political activist, and then there's author who popularises 'Life School' philosophy, Alain de Botton.
Then we have the artists and painters from Masaccio, to Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Jan Toroop to Lucien Freud and the ever controversial, Marina Abramovic. But one mention must go to French artist and teacher of painting, William Adolph Bougereau, His name was tarnished as being too traditional, not  being ‘modern’ enough by Picasso and the art gallery owners who ganged up against him and cast him into the margins of art history as an old fuddy duddy, but he was was as skilled and technically accomplished as any of the Renaissance painters, ran his own school and more hard working and prolific than any of the Impressionists or Post-Impressionists or Cubists.
Then we have the visionary Sci Fi writers  Philip K. Dick author of the stories that made it into film: Blade Runner, Minority Report and The Adjustment Bureau. Dick spoke of visions of the future that have if not come true, then are resonating widely. His imagination was as fertile as any and he worked at top speed even bringing downloads of Gnostic wisdom into novels like Valis. Also Arthur C. Clarke and C.S. Lewis were both Sagittarians. These are the big names in the field whose legacy remains strong.
And the film directors can’t be bigger Fritz Lang, Stephen Spielberg and Ridley Scott who directed some of the best known films in past decades and has just directed Napoleon. But working on a smaller, more intimate scale we should not ignore Woody Allen, John Cassavetes, and the lesser known Argentinian film director, Marco Berger.
And who is the most loved actress in the UK?  Yorkshire born, Dame Judi Dench as talented and versatile as any actress can be. But world renowned actors include Liv Ullman, John Malkovich, Christopher Plummer, Brad Pitt, Kim Basinger, Julianne Moore and Jake Gylenhaal, most of them known around the world not just in their home countries.
Finally the athletes. Sagittarius is a fully developed physical sign – the hybrid centaur- so we have runner Florence Griffiths-Joyner, Donovan Bailey, and Oscar Pistorius, and football player Kylian Mbappe, along with Tennis players Boris Becker and Monia Seles.
See who else you can recognise in the collage of famous Sagittarians and in the list.
And now to end with comedian Bill Hicks, a Sagittarian, capturing the essence of a daily thought in the minds of these fiery, idealistic spirits:
“The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it’s real because that’s how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it’s very brightly colored, and it’s very loud, and it’s fun for a while.
Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, “Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?” And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, “Hey, don’t worry; don’t be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride.” And we … kill those people. “Shut him up! I’ve got a lot invested in this ride, shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry, look at my big bank account, and my family. This has to be real.” It’s just a ride. But we always kill the good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok …
But it doesn’t matter, because it’s just a ride. And we can change it any time we want. It’s only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. Just a simple choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here’s what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.”
If you think the world is accelerating towards a collective psychosis, you are not alone but it could be a  magnified reflection of our own fears. According to author Paul Levy to recognise that there’s a dream-like quality to reality is the first step to activating your creative higher self, and to use the Daimon- the inner genius or ‘higher’ self- is a way to counter the wetiko mind-blindness that appears to have become virulent in the world. This means taking a ‘quantum’ perspective and Sagittarius is at home with the quantum world and the weird and multiple perspectives and dimensions it brings to bear on the old solidified way of seeing reality.

Catherine lands at Plymouth
Catherine saw the first signs of the popular rejoicing when her battered fleet finally made the Sound and dropped anchor off Plymouth Hoe on a bright Saturday afternoon, the second of October, 1501. For weeks the West Country had expected her coming; the topmasts of the foreign ships, the gay flutter of Spanish standards, the familiar cut of Stephen Brett’s rigging had packed the quay with gaily dressed citizens among whom were already a sprinkling of squires and their wives, the town barge with the Lord Mayor and a delegation of aldermen floated ready, and, as the first anchors dropped, a welcoming clamour of bells broke out over town and harbour. What makes it the more impressive is that Plymouth’s welcome was entirely spontaneous. The English of course had made elaborate preparations for Catherine’s reception. But everything had been based on the assumption that she would land at Southampton. So when she came ashore instead at Plymouth, the townsmen and local gentry were left to their own devices to offer their own, impromptu welcome. There was no royal officer at Plymouth to bid the Princess welcome.
Catherine may have been a girl not yet sixteen, hardly recovered from seasickness and fright and the wetting which even a princess could not escape in such squalls as her fleet had weathered, but she had been thoroughly trained in what was expected of royalty; when her ship was warped in to the quay she stood in the waist with the Archbishop and the Bishop and the Count of Cabra and her suite of honour ranged ceremoniously behind her. The welcoming crowds may have been a little dissapointed that as well as a coif (head covering) and hat, wich allowed her hair to hang down about her shoulders, Catherine reportedly also wore a veil. But no doubt they marvelled at the multicultural entourage she brought with her.
Tumblr media
As Catherine walked down the gangway, followed by her retinue, the first thing she saw through her veil was the Mayor of Plymouth and his aldermen, come to welcome her to England. The townsfolk were there too, cheering and waving, and there were banners in the streets. ‘The Princess could not have been received with greater joy’, wrote the elated Licentiate Alcaraz to Queen Isabella, ‘had she been the Saviour of the world.'  Not long after stepping on English soil for the first time, Catherine went in procession to the church to give thanks for her safe arrival. Meanwhile, a royal messenger was speeding away to the King, to tell him that the Princess whose arrival he had awaited for thirteen years was actually in his kingdom. Catherine stayed at the house of a rich merchant named John Painter, who provided lodgings and entertainment for the newly-arrived Spanish princess before her long journey overland to London and marriage. She remained there over a week, as the arrangements for her official welcome were hastily revised.
Tumblr media
Margaret Beaufort, the king’s mother, noted the event in her Book of Hours, where only the most important occasions were recorded. While King Henry was not there to welcome his daughter-in-law in person, he did pen her a letter telling her of how happy and relieved he was that she’d finally arrived. Catherine’s arrival was such an important event that it warranted a specially commissioned account. The task of describing her journey into England appears to have fallen to the poet Stephen Hawes, with the commission almost certainly coming from Henry VII himself. He wrote his chronicle in the style of a medieval romance and gave it the title The Receyt of the Ladie Kateryne.

Tutorials, new features and parts
Hey all, here's an update on what I've been working on for the past couple of months.
Tutorial scenarios
The main challenge I've had lately is with the design of the tutorial scenarios, my original idea for these didn't work out to my liking.  They ended up being rather boring and didn't give a very good first impression of the game.  So I decided to try a new direction to create a more entertaining experience for first time players while introducing some basic concepts.
Unfortunately this will likely mean scrapping some of the work I've already done, but hopefully I can reuse some of it at least.  For now I'll say no more about the new tutorial scenario design, until I'm further along with it and more confident that it's going to work out.
I found all this rather dispiriting and frustrating to be honest, so to try and keep myself motivated and move things forward, I've also been working on some other stuff!
Building improvements
Recently I've been playing the game a lot (to build content for the tutorial scenarios and trailer video), this has highlighted some bugs and other usability annoyances, which I've been fixing as I find them.
For example:-
When detaching selected parts from other ones, the attachment types between them would be lost, and after re-attaching them you'd have to change the attachments back to the desired type.  Now, the types are saved while the selection is being moved, and restored after re-attachment.
Part highlighting has been improved so that tools only highlight parts relevant to them (e.g. only paintable parts for painter tool).
Fixed several bugs (such as parts sometimes not attaching to engaged gears, random rotation after freezing a construction, part duplication issues, and so on).
Braking
On the subject of annoyances, I built a race car to showcase on the race track map, which was fun to drive around but really emphasised the need for proper braking.
Electric motors provide regen braking by running them backwards, but this was hard to control.  If a vehicle's wheels had insufficient grip they'd slip and the motor would spin up in reverse.  So I made some changes to the motor part behaviour to address this:-
Above a certain speed a "braking direction" is now set, which is then used to prevent the motor from spinning in reverse after coming to a stop during braking (the braking direction is reset once directional control is released).
Added a separate tweakable value for braking torque.
Electric motor regen may not provide enough braking on its own however, and so I've now implemented a new braking part behaviour for wheels (that can be activated by a bound key).  This makes driving vehicles way more controllable and enjoyable.
When braking is enabled, a brake disc is shown inside the wheel.
Tumblr media
I plan on adding separate brake and clutch parts in the future that will also make use of this same part behaviour implementation.
Analog joystick control
After spending some time driving vehicles around, I couldn't resist implementing something that would greatly improve the experience - analog control.  More specifically, being able to bind a joystick axis to a controllable part behaviour (such as a motor).
Tumblr media
This, in combination with braking, transforms the enjoyment of driving vehicles in the game.  It is optional however, and the regular bound keys are still a decent method of control.
Chase camera
Another thing I couldn't resist adding was a "chase" camera, which is now selectable when the player is seated.  It's similar to the existing third-person camera except that side-to-side movement is smoothly locked behind the seated player, and the mouse can only move the camera up and down.
This camera mode makes driving vehicles in a third-person view much easier, as you don't have to manually track the vehicle by moving the mouse.
More parts and improvements
Again, after spending time driving vehicles, I wanted to improve how leaving seats worked:-
Rather than having to look down at a seat to leave it, you can now simply press the "jump" action (i.e. Space by default).
When leaving a seat, if possible the player is now repositioned at a free position in front or to the side of the seat, rather than on top.  This is more better for a vehicle with a roof for example, where before the player would just be repositioned on top of the roof.
I also improved some other part behaviours (e.g. key bind for differential locking, tweakable light brightness) and added several more parts (e.g. seat, gear, steering wheel, connectors) to facilitate some of the example constructions I've been making.
Grabber tool
Finally, I decided to implement the last remaining tool in the game, the "grabber" tool.  Although this wasn't a particularly high priority, it was quick to implement and I wanted to get it done so that I have the option to include it in the tutorial scenarios, without having to go back and modify them later.
The grabber tool allows constructions to be moved around as physical objects, i.e. without freezing them first.
It has two modes, "grab" and "shove":-
Target part of a construction, then click the left mouse button and drag, to grab that part and drag the construction around by it.
Target part of a construction, hold the right mouse button to charge up, then release to apply a shove force to that part of the construction.
Tumblr media
The grab and shove forces are configurable, as is the ability to have free or locked rotation while grabbing.
What about the full game release?
Before the early access release of the game, there are two main tasks left I need to get done: finish the in-game tutorials and make a trailer video.
The tutorial scenarios have not progressed to where I would have liked by now, but I needed a break from them to clear my head, and work on something else.  Anyway, now I really need to focus back on finishing the tutorial scenarios, finish building content for the trailer video, and get that captured and edited.
I was hoping to release the game before the end of the year, but unfortunately it's now looking like the date will have to slip by a few months.
This is really disappointing I know, but by way of compensation, I've decided to do another demo release update soon, which will include many of the improvements mentioned in this post, so keep your eye out for that!

COLOR ARCHETYPES CHALLANGE 🌈 (Legacy Challenge :3) Info; This can be a completely base game challenge, bcuz why do all the rich people get to have all the fun??? This is similar to the Not So Berry challenge, with certain colors for sims and aspirations need to be filled out and jobs that need to be done. But with this challenge, we're going through the rainbow of colors and their archetypes/associations. There's two paths you can choose for this, negative and positive connotations. You can do one or the other, or maybe both if you wanna go through with that ;] Oh also be warned, I don't play the sims often. So I barely have an idea about any sort of achievements in this game... I don't know the collections you can get or any sorts o that stuff. Also I've never made a sims 4 challenge before, and have only dipped my toes in other challenges (b4 realizing SO many of them used packs I do not have and got sad and stopped). So, uh, hope you enjoy my first ever challenge tehe
Rules;
The sims looks need to be based around their colors, they need to REPRESENT their colors. So the red sim needs to wear red, orange wears orange, etc etc. (but ig this can be optional, if you're boring. Hehe, jk jk, but cmon man, this is like half the fun!)
Cheats can be used, but not excessively, and nothin that like makes the entire challenge just pointless. Don't cheat your way through jobs or aspirations >:/. But you wanna use a money cheat to get yoself a good house? Go ahead. You don't wanna wait like five years for your sim to give birth? Yeah just speed that baby up. Because I get it, I'm not a patient person either. you want that shit DONE.
Live wherever you please idfc, probably won't be any specified regions to live since there's like- what? 3? 4? in base game?? Yeah do whatever you want
Obviously, generation based. Not really a tradition Legacy challenge since the rainbow is like only six colors, so it'd only be six generations instead of 10. But yk if you wanna do 10 gens, add a few extra colors. Aka, six generations is yo minimum
Like every other legacy challenge, the generations gotta complete both the career and the aspiration. Bla bla bla bet ya know that already
Keep lifespan on normal. like yeesh, challenge yourself a bit. But if you forget uhm uh uh um whoopsy daisy, idc, I'm not the challenge police
Uhhhhh feel free to tweak this challenge if you'd like, or remix it to your pleasing. This is just a silly thing I decided to make because I'm poor and can't afford 40 dollar packs to do some challenge. If you rrrrich people wanna add some shit from your fancy little packs go ahead idc
Oh yeah and also this is color archetypes. The the the sims are based on the archetypes of colors. There's two different playthroughs, negative and positive. Traits: Materialistic, Jealous, mean Aspiration: Fabulously Wealthy Career: Business
Master career and complete aspirations
Trash another sim five times
Flirt with someone married and convince them to leave their relationship Generation five: Blue 🟦 Okay now we can bring back blue=sad connotations. Blue is a sad and depressing and lonely color. It's passive and- conservative?? Yeah we gettin political in here now. It's cold and predictable. Just- its a really sad color. Traits: Gloomy, Loner, Perfectionist Aspiration: Big Happy Family (Female sim), Bodybuilder (Male sim) Career: Stay-at-home mom (Female sim), Athlete (Male sim)
Yeah, we ARE actually going this route. This is a traditional valued family. Sorry.
You actually don't gotta master the career or complete the aspiration.. I think it makes more sense if you didn't.. just try to get through life man.
Get your painting skill up but don't master it, and only paint sad paintings
Don't let your charisma or comedy skill go past level 5 Generation six: Purple 🟪 After being raised by blue, I think this only makes sense. Purple is a very emotional and sensitive color. It can be arrogant and immature. It can evoke frustration and sadness. Traits: Gloomy, erratic, hot-headed Aspiration: Bestselling Author Career: Writer (Author branch, specifically.)
Master career and complete aspirations
Whenever sim is feeling a negative emotion, like anger or sadness, make it known. Any interaction based on that emotion, such as complaining or yelling or fighting, do it.
Master violin skill, cuz thats a sad instrument right??
Write sad books when sad. Do this a lot. Be sad a lot and write sad books. No goal number, just be sad and write. And thats it :3! If you guys actually want 10 generations add more colors follow those archetypes and just you do you :P And if you do this challenge or even just tweak it a little I wanna see! Maybe I'll do a hashtag like #colorarchetypes or #colorarchetypeschallenge pshh I don't know how these things work '3'

Introducing the 2023 National Book Awards Longlists!
The National Book Foundation has officially announced the longlists for the 2023 National Book Awards! These are just a handful of the titles chosen for the fiction category. To see all of the titles selected, be sure to click here.
Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah
Loretta Thurwar and Hamara "Hurricane Staxxx" Stacker are the stars of Chain-Gang All-Stars, the cornerstone of CAPE, or Criminal Action Penal Entertainment, a highly-popular, highly-controversial, profit-raising program in America's increasingly dominant private prison industry. It's the return of the gladiators and prisoners are competing for the ultimate prize: their freedom.
In CAPE, prisoners travel as Links in Chain-Gangs, competing in death-matches for packed arenas with righteous protestors at the gates. Thurwar and Staxxx, both teammates and lovers, are the fan favorites. And if all goes well, Thurwar will be free in just a few matches, a fact she carries as heavily as her lethal hammer. As she prepares to leave her fellow Links, she considers how she might help preserve their humanity, in defiance of these so-called games, but CAPE's corporate owners will stop at nothing to protect their status quo and the obstacles they lay in Thurwar's path have devastating consequences.
Moving from the Links in the field to the protestors to the CAPE employees and beyond, Chain-Gang All-Stars is a kaleidoscopic, excoriating look at the American prison system's unholy alliance of systemic racism, unchecked capitalism, and mass incarceration, and a clear-eyed reckoning with what freedom in this country really means.
Ponyboy by Eliot Duncan
In the first of three acts, Ponyboy’s titular narrator—a pill-popping, speed-snorting trans-masculine lightning bolt—unravels in his Paris apartment. Ponyboy is caught in a messy love triangle with Baby, a lesbian painter who can’t see herself being with someone trans, and Toni, a childhood friend who can actually see Ponyboy for who he is. Strung out, Ponyboy follows Baby to Berlin in act two, where he sinks deeper into drugs and falls for Hart, a fellow writer, all the while pursued by a megalomaniacal photographer hungry for the next hot thing. As Ponyboy’s relationships crumble, he overdoses and finds himself alone in his childhood home in Nebraska. The novel’s final act follows Ponyboy to rehab, exploring the ways in which trans identity, addiction, and recovery reforge the bond between mother and child.
Eliot Duncan reveals, in precise atmospheric prose reminiscent of Anne Carson and Allen Ginsberg, the innate splendor, joy, and ache of becoming oneself.
The End of Drum-Time by Hanna Pylväinen
It’s 1851 at the edge of the arctic circle, and things are changing quickly. The church outpost that Lars Levi, a fervent Lutheran minister, mans is a rugged, sparsely populated one. But as the zeal of his teachings mounts, so does the attendance at the weekly services he holds. The Sámi reindeer herders he’s been sent to minister to are skeptical of the Christian values—and strict rules—he preaches, but when Biettar, one of the Sami’s most respected herders, has a dramatic religious awakening on the shortest day of the year, more and more of the Sámi people become ready to let their long-held traditions and beliefs give way to new ones. Biettar’s new commitment to Lars and his teachings means that Biettar’s son, Ivvár, is left to tend the family’s reindeer herd alone, an increasingly impossible task.
Meanwhile, Lars’s daughter, Willa, has always been the picture of obedience, until a chance encounter with Ivvár leads to an infatuation that gradually becomes something more. When a catastrophic illness threatens the life of her young brother, everything she’s ever believed is called into question, making her feel reckless—and free—in a way she’s never been before.
Gorgeously written and stunning in scope, The End of Drum-Time is both a powerful immersion into a rich and sometimes forgotten culture and a celebration of a beautiful, ancient way of life. It masterfully weaves together the complex geopolitics and rich tradition of nineteenth-century Scandinavia; brings to life a people caught between an old way of life and the new; and asks how what we believe shapes the course of our lives.
This Other Eden by Paul Harding
In 1792, formerly enslaved Benjamin Honey and his Irish wife, Patience, discover an island where they can make a life together. Over a century later, the Honeys’ descendants and a diverse group of neighbors are desperately poor, isolated, and often hungry, but nevertheless protected from the hostility awaiting them on the mainland.
During the tumultuous summer of 1912, Matthew Diamond, a retired, idealistic but prejudiced schoolteacher-turned-missionary, disrupts the community’s fragile balance through his efforts to educate its children. His presence attracts the attention of authorities on the mainland who, under the influence of the eugenics-thinking popular among progressives of the day, decide to forcibly evacuate the island, institutionalize its residents, and develop the island as a vacation destination. Beginning with a hurricane flood reminiscent of the story of Noah’s Ark, the novel ends with yet another Ark.
Full of lyricism and power, This Other Eden explores the hopes and dreams and resilience of those seen not to fit a world brutally intolerant of difference.
Temple Folk by Aaliyah Bilal
In Temple Folk, Black Muslims contemplate the convictions of their race, religion, economics, politics, and sexuality in America. The ten stories in this collection contribute to the bounty of diverse narratives about Black life by intimately portraying the experiences of a community that resists the mainstream culture to which they are expected to accept and aspire to while functioning within the country in which they are born.
In “Due North,” an obedient daughter struggles to understand why she’s haunted by the spirit of her recently deceased father. In “Who’s Down?” a father, after a brief affair with vegetarianism, conspires with his daughter to order him a double cheeseburger. In “Candy for Hanif” a mother’s routine trip to the store for her disabled son takes an unlikely turn when she reflects on a near-death experience. In “Woman in Niqab,” a daughter’s suspicion of her father’s infidelity prompts her to wear her hair in public. In “New Mexico,” a federal agent tasked with spying on a high-ranking member of the Nation of Islam grapples with his responsibilities closer to home.
With an unflinching eye for the contradictions between what these characters profess to believe and what they do, Temple Folk accomplishes the rare feat of presenting moral failures with compassion, nuance, and humor to remind us that while perfection is what many of us strive for, it’s the errors that make us human.

Volume Two Text
Volume Two’ – The future prospects to where the influence of title sequences can take us in the design world.
Intro - 200 words
Volume Two, ‘The Redefine’, touches on the future prospects of where the influence of title sequences can take us in the design world. This volume focuses on how the industry is developing and changing, and how using title sequence design in the entertainment industry can promote and convey the mood of the entire movie before you even watch the first scene. This sort of design power can be used to contribute to more than just the entertainment market, but further developments into the future, such as AI (Artificial Intelligence) and HCI (Human-Computer Interactions).
Body - 1500 words
2b. (Connection between design and technology)
One of the most recognizable traits of humanity is the ability to create art. The creation of aesthetically pleasing artifacts has the ability to connect each human being together with nothing more than a few brushstrokes or strikes of the chisel. The artistic quality of humankind furthers our understanding of each other and can ultimately take imagination to its greatest height.
All of the arts build upon one another. The relationships between the visual arts— such as painting, drawing and photography—have been apparent throughout their respective historical beginnings. For example, during the nineteenth century, photographers employed compositional techniques of painters as an artistic influence for the foundation of their photographs. Without the development of photography, painters like Edgar Degas would not have experimented with new visual perspectives in their works. 2 This evolution of technique and creativity resulted in different forms of artistic thinking and tools for artists to express their new ideas. Among the most recent practices of art produced from this progression are the modern arts of graphic design and filmmaking. Graphic design and filmmaking are considered modern approaches to the arts. This is due to the advancing technological era in which both came to fruition. Both graphic design and filmmaking are often viewed as two separate entities within the arts, but they are not. Visual arts affect one another. In its most basic form, the effect of graphic design on cinema is found in film titles or promotional material such as posters; however, this limits the effect of design on film to print or typographic sources only. Though it is true that graphic design contributes to the complete package of a film, one can also examine the influence of design principles further into the creation of a film itself.
2c. (The Downfall and Uprise)
It appeared quietly, in the right corner of your Netflix screen a few months ago: the “skip intro” button. A translucent shortcut customized by the streaming service built to work both with any series, cold open or no, meant to allow binge-watchers to expedite their viewing experience. In the past, new features and redesigns have come and gone on the site without a word, but the button almost immediately created quite a stir. Most notably, the AV Club called out Netflix for “killing” TV title sequences by easily allowing viewers to opt out, and The Guardian took issue with Netflix for allowing the feature to extend beyond their originals and into their collection of classic films. Using the button on Do the Right Thing, could mean you’d entirely miss Rosie Perez’s defiant, “Fight the Power” dance sequence. Clicking the button at the start of Forrest Gump might send you speeding right past the iconic (if lengthy) floating feather montage and barrel you straight into Hanks’ iconic chocolate line. And while The Simpsons is one of the few series Netflix doesn’t host, the feature could potentially cause you to miss the ever-evolving title sequence. Still, users love “skip intro”: so much so that Netflix has begun to take out intros automatically when users rely on their autoplay feature. But is Netflix’s latest innovation a harbinger of doom for the title sequence as we know it? Certainly not — it’s just making its home back on the big screen. GLOW creators Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive even ditched their title sequence entirely after the first episode of their show, allowing the full length sequence to appear on the pilot before replacing it in subsequent episodes with a dynamic title card to save time and prevent those who decided to consume the series all in one go from having to watch it ten times in an afternoon. In a conversation with Art of the Title about the decision, GLOW’s title designer Richard Kenworthy insisted that, “There’s really nothing to gain from putting it on every show.”
The resurgence of the title sequence isn’t just in the art film scene: M. Night Shyamalan’s Split uses its as a visual representation of the fractured and disturbing psychology the film will introduce, all while providing audiences with a voyeuristic look at the action unfolding before the film begins in earnest. James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 features what’s likely the year’s most bombastic sequence, as the maddeningly cute Baby Groot toe-taps along to ELO’s “Mr. Blue Sky” during the first ten minutes of the film. As he narrowly avoids certain death during a neon-lit fight scene, the film’s credits appear in the screen wherever there’s room around his flailing limbs. And while it’s clear 2017 marked a cinematic spike in artful introductory sequences, perhaps the most unmitigable sign that the title sequence is still very much a part of the lexicon is in Marvel and DC’s interconnected universes and their obligatory post-credit scenes, demanding audiences remain in their seat until the last credit rolls. This year, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok and the aforementioned Guardians 2 all took the opportunity of a rapt audience to construct dynamic title sequences at the film’s end. And with the release calendar stuffed with more titles of this ilk, it’s clear the trend won’t be gone from cinemas anytime soon.
It’s unclear what the future of television title sequences are in the digital age: it seems equally possible that creators will continue making titles that uniquely evoke the spirit of their show (and even occasionally transcend it) as it does Netflix and it’s future creators could deem them unnecessary. But if television titles are in decline, 2017 stands as a ringing reminder that cinematic title sequences are on their way back up. You might just have to look a little harder to find them.
2d (The future; by Patrick Clair )
"Title sequences are in some ways more important than they’ve ever been."
Patrick Clair
When asked if he has any idea where title sequences are headed next, with all the big changes that have occurred in recent history, Patrick notes that in the four years since he’s been making title sequences for international content, he’s witnessed “a shift from it being probably laughable that Netflix may be a serious player in the original content business, to the point where, no exaggeration, most of my work is for Netflix or Amazon. And the most recent film that we did with Netflix just got nominated for an Oscar”.
“I tend to think that financial limitations drive creative innovation and that pressure is actually where we get cool new ideas, and cool new approaches from."
Patrick Clair
Patrick sees us headed into “a really exciting phase of experimentation and diversification”. With diversification in the types of shows and their formats, he says traditions “are going to go out the window”. “It’s going to be a really great time where the visual language of things like the Internet and magazines and printed books and all the sort of graphic design that goes with that merges with the storytelling of dramatic live action screen content. And for people like me that like to sort of play with melding both of them I think it’s a really cool time to be in the industry”.
2e. (conclusion)
As we have seen, in the contemporary media landscape the opening title sequence continues to provide its traditional, paratextual function by connecting audiences to media content and introducing a storyworld. More importantly, it consolidates other functions while nevertheless assuming new ones. It is able to brand content powerfully, providing it with a strong visual identity which makes it clearly recognisable in an increasingly crowded mediascape. Also, it potentially connects viewers with each other and contributes to the building of networked communities, thus reinforcing the idea of content as ‘a medium for interaction between people’.[44] In this sense the multiple ways in which main titles work can play a key role in the ‘shift from an appointment-based model of television viewing toward an engagement-based paradigm’.[45] Rather than ‘consumers of preconstructed messages’,[46] ‘engagement-based models see the audience as a collective of active agents whose labor may generate alternative forms of market value’[47] – or, in other words, ‘as people who are shaping, sharing, reframing, and remixing media content in ways which might not have been previously imagined’.[48] In this renewed framework main titles become a very interesting platform for ‘meaningful participation’[49] and provide useful insights about ‘the roles that networked communities play in shaping how media circulates’
