Si creciste viendo Nickelodeon, es posible que te preguntes qué pasó con Victoria Justice, quien apareció en Zoey 101 antes de conseguir su propio programa en el canal con Victorious de 2010.

While we were out in Palm Springs shooting our Spring 20 campaign, we took the time to sit down with our latest Original Tracks artist Spencer Sutherland presented by Flood Magazine. Give it a read to learn a bit more about the star that is Spencer Sutherland.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN ORIGINAL?
Penguin has been a brand that I have been a fan of ever since I could remember. My grandpa, actually, wore this old polo from the actual 60’s. And it was a Penguin polo. I always loved the brand, which is why I actually started reaching out to them [Penguin]. I got hooked up that way. It’s so cool to be an Original because Penguin has done a lot of videos that I love, especially the Bryce Vine one. I’ve always wanted to do something with Penguin that’s cool, different, and unique, and I’m really proud of the final video we made.
WHAT’S THE CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE FOR YOU WHEN IT COMES TO WRITING A SONG?
Some songs come right away, while some take weeks. Usually the creative process starts with some chords, then whatever’s on my mind inspires me to write super honest lyrics. However, that’s one of the biggest things for me – to be super super honest in my songwriting. I also try to make music that’s different from what I hear all the time. I kind of hear the same songs over and over, so I think it’s real important to make something unique
HOW'D YOU GET INTO MUSIC AND PERFORMING FOR OUR AUDIENCE WHO DOESN'T KNOW?
I’ve been singing ever since I was a little kid – it’s in my blood! I didn’t want to go to college, and in high school I was always playing in restaurants. It’s a true grass roots story! I didn’t blow up on social media; I didn’t do any of that stuff. I kept doing my thing. It all kind of snowballed into where I am now, where I can make my own music and tour. It all makes it worth it, and because I have such a long journey, I can look back and really appreciate things a lot of people maybe can’t.
IF YOU COULD PERFORM AT ANY VENUE, WHERE WOULD YOU WANT TO PERFORM AND WHY?
Madison Square Garden for sure.
IF YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET A DRINK WITH ANYONE, FROM ANY TIME - WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
My answer will always be Elvis. I would pick Elvis for every reason you could get a drink with Elvis.
IF YOU COULD DO A SONG WITH ONE PERSON RIGHT NOW, WHO WOULD IT BE?
Elvis, 100%!
IF YOU WEREN'T A MUSICIAN, WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO BE DOING?
Well it would definitely be something in entertainment just because I love it so much, but if it couldn’t be in that field, something in the fitness industry probably. Fitness is just another big passion of mine, and a big part of my life.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND AND RELAX WHEN THINGS GET STRESSFUL?
I like to go like to coffee shops and hang out and do nothing. Like literally just look around and get coffee. I also like to watch new Netflix shows. Those are two top things I can think of. Going for a run is a good one too.
IF YOU COULD BE ANY ANIMAL, WHAT WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?
I’d be an alligator, because, well, there are a bunch of reasons. One is because they’re in the water and on land, which I think is super dope. And they live forever. They can live for up to a hundred years!
WHO PLAYS SPENCER SUTHERLAND IN A MOVIE?
Zac Efron hopefully. I can only pray. And then, the older version of me would be played by Will Ferrell.
WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO YOU RECENTLY?
So I was just in New Orleans and sang with Harry Connick Jr., but then I also had a dance off with Bryan Cranston. Like literally we had a dance off on stage. The whole time I was just thinking about Walter White or Hal from Malcolm in The Middle.

Here’s a full guide to Netflix’s Afterlife of the Party soundtrack, which delivers a short list of poppy, upbeat party songs by American pop and R&B singer Spencer Sutherland and one score track by composer Jessica Rose Weiss. Starring actress Victoria Justice of Nickelodeon fame (VICTORiOUS) as Cassie, a fun-loving, albeit irresponsible social butterfly, Afterlife of the Party follows Cassie into a purgatory-like afterlife after a freak accident kills her, where she’s offered the opportunity to right all her unresolved wrongs on Earth, thus earning passage to the “Above” (heaven) or, if she fails, to the “Below” (hell).
Matching the Afterlife of the Party‘s comedic “death-but-fun“ premise is a 5-track EP soundtrack that errs more on the side of fun than death. Put another way, while Cassie is stuck in the In-Between, a limbo state between heaven and hell, the album has both feet firmly planted in heaven. In fact, the album is exclusively upbeat and danceable, featuring four original songs performed by Sutherland, who stars in the movie as the famous fictional singer Koop whom Cassie idolizes; one of which includes a duet with Sutherland and Justice. Though Cassie’s fangirl obsession with Koop is repeatedly made obvious throughout the film, what’s understated about their budding connection is how, despite the chasm separating life and death, their separate journeys seem to have always pointed towards each other, with a charming twist ending that sees the two entering a “pearly gates” of sorts hand-in-hand.

For his feature film debut, Sutherland’s character has more of ambient presence in the movie, whereas the real-life pop singer Sutherland plays a more central role to the Afterlife of the Party soundtrack. Pop music fans may know Sutherland as a contestant on the UK version of The X-Factor in 2017, performing Marvin Gaye’s sultry “Let’s Get It On” for his audition and James Arthur’s “Say You Won’t Let Go” in a group performance. Sutherland has also released multiple singles starting with “Heartstrings” in 2013 up to “Freaking Out” in 2019, before landing both an acting and singing role in Afterlife of the Party.
At the helm of the Afterlife of the Party soundtrack, Sutherland is the movie’s musical heart and soul. On the topic of entering the movie industry through the channel of music, Sutherland expressed in an exclusive interview with Alexisjoyvipaccess his eagerness to take on more acting roles: “I’ve found such a passion in acting now from this, and I would love to do a lot more in acting, but also a lot more in musical acting, because it was very cool to tie the two together. It was amazing.“
Whether or not that means we’ll see Sutherland in more musical acting roles in the future remains to be seen. Nonetheless, his performance in Afterlife of the Party is key to the “party” aspect of the story, and it seems likely that Netflix will continue along this pop musical trajectory with its future titles. With that in mind, here is a breakdown of each song on the movie’s soundtrack, as well as an additional song heard in the movie.
“Blush” by Spencer Sutherland – Played multiple times throughout the story, Sutherland’s “Blush” (or, rather, Koop’s “Blush” from the character’s perspective) is arguably the main theme song of the movie. Introduced by a radio DJ voiceover as “the number one song of the day” at the movie’s opening when Cassie is considering various outfits in front of her mirror, “Blush” is soon after described by Cassie and her best friend Lisa (Midori Francis) as “their song” when it’s heard playing at a dance club. This is significant when later, after Cassie dies, Cassie fulfills her role as Lisa’s spectral wing-woman by trespassing into Max’s (Timothy Renouf) apartment, Lisa’s hunky neighbor, to sabotage his record-player into accidentally playing “Blush” during a chance encounter between Max and Lisa, who is wearing a “KOOP” shirt at the time. Max takes advantage of this “coincidence” to ask Lisa on a date to see the music video set of a Koop song.
“Drive” by Spencer Sutherland – While hanging out in Lisa’s apartment, Lisa initiates an “impromptu dance party” with her deceased friend Cassie after commanding Google to “play ‘Drive’ by Koop.” It’s revealed during this exchange that Lisa introduced Cassie to Koop’s “greatness,” further suggesting of the importance of Koop’s music to their bond.

“One Look” by Spencer Sutherland – The music video Max refers to when asking Lisa on a date, Sutherland performs “One Look” in the flesh (as Koop) while standing in front of a blue convertible with a surrounding team of backup dancers. Taking advantage of her ghostly transparency, Cassie transports herself onto the music video set, much to the awe of Lisa, and she starts dancing in front of Koop, who seems vaguely and nonchalantly aware of her presence. During the song, Cassie approaches Koop for a kiss before she’s abruptly snapped back to the In-Between headquarters, where she’s chastised by her quirky guardian angel Val (Robyn Scott) for neglecting her purgatorial responsibilities.
“Home” by Spencer Sutherland & Victoria Justice – Breaking up the Sutherland monopoly on the Afterlife of the Party soundtrack is a duet track with both Sutherland and Justice, heard during the story’s end after a recently deceased Koop and Cassie meet in an elevator ascending to the Above (heaven). As the two walk hand-in-hand towards Above’s idyllic, flowery mountain range, the song starts as the end credits roll, signifying that Cassie and Koop are finally “home.”
“Score Suite” by Jessica Rose Weiss – The one non-Sutherland song on the movie’s soundtrack, “Score Suite” is the only listed track on the list attributed to the composer of the film. While somewhat more somber in parts, at least in relation to Sutherland’s dance tracks, “Score Suite” is predominated by a majestically whimsical tone familiar to many rom-com scores.
“I Only Have Eyes For You” by The Flamingos – Not listed on the official Afterlife of the Party soundtrack, “I Only Have Eyes For You” by The Flamingos plays from the record-player in Max’s apartment, presumably as intended by Max this time, to set a romantic mood for him and Lisa, as they cheers to “regret” over wine, confess their feelings for one another, and kiss.

ALL CLEAR GIVEN FOR SHARON TO REOPEN – Classes for all students at the Sharon Primary School will resume tomorrow. A statement from Deputy Chief Education Officer, Joy Adamson said, the school has been cleaned and remediation work completed. Adams said that the Ministry of Health and Wellness has given the all clear for classes to recommence at the school's compound. The Senior Education Official also gave an update on the The Maria Holder Nursery School. She said the school has been in session for one week and there have been no adverse reports from students or members of staff during the week. Preliminarily air quality tests have been conducted by a private firm at both the Maria Holder Nursery and Sharon Primary schools and no alarming levels of particulate matter were detected. There will be continued monitoring around these two schools by three Ministries, the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Ministry of Labour.(DN)
SPENCER: TREAT TEACHERS’ UNIONS EQUALLY – THE BARBADOS UNION OF TEACHERS (BUT) is crying foul over what it says is the way teachers’ unions have been treated. Speaking on Voice of Barbados’ Brass Tacks Sunday, president Sean Spencer told the call-in radio programme yesterday that they had been discriminated against for a number of years, and that needed to change. “You have a case where the board at Erdiston Teachers’ Training College has two seats reserved for the principals’ bodies – the Barbados Association of Principals of Public Secondary Schools (BAPPSS) and the Association of Principals of Primary Schools (APPS). “There is no provision for either of the two teachers’ unions. This is 2019 and the college was established in 1948,” Spencer lamented. As another example, he said while BAPPSS got financial backing, they received not one red cent to travel to the Caribbean Association of Principals of Secondary Schools meeting held earlier this year in St Vincent. “All 21 principals would have been sponsored by the Ministry [of Education]. When the BUT travelled to the same St Vincent, there was no such provision for sponsorship.” (DN)
AKHNATEN WANTS TO YAP WITH THE YOUTH – Akhnaten Burrowes has an effervescent personality. He’s also the life of any party. Spend even five minutes with the 22-year-old and it’s bound to rub off. But this was not always who he was. In fact, finding himself has admittedly been his greatest struggle. “From young it was hard. I used to go into parties and worry about what people would say when I do too much. But now I say, ‘You’re doing too little’. I’m very extra in a good way. It was a journey but when I surpassed caring what others thought about me, the rest was history. I’m glad I got past it. “I don’t care what other people think. I don’t believe in posing. I would go to any party and I don’t care who is there; you can guarantee that I would be having a good time,” he said while doing one of his signature poses. He told EASY Magazine during an interview at Sweetfield Manor, Brittons Hill, St Michael, that he prided himself on always having good vibes and being someone who made people feel good about themselves. “I was always outgoing. That’s all I know how to be. Having good energy around you is very important. When life gives you lemons or limes, you make lemonade. So rather than dwelling on the negative too much, I try to dwell a lot on the positive.” He added: “I would realise that I would have random conversations with people and they would really enjoy the conversations and appreciate the advice. It made me feel good to know that I could make someone else feel much better about themselves and make them feel happier. “Sometimes a person feels better when they know someone else is going through the same thing as them, so they’re not alone. A lot of people aren’t authentic and honest to say they do go through problems and have things that make them feel unhappy or uneasy or miserable. When someone else can relate to you and make you feel more comfortable, then this journey is easier. We really do need each other to survive,” he stressed. (DN)
OPTIONS TO JAIL – ANKLE MONITORING and electronic surveillance are being explored by Government as some of the alternatives to simply locking up people at Her Majesty’s Prisons Dodds. Speaking at a Barbados Prison Services anniversary church service at Ellerton Wesleyan Holiness Church, St George, yesterday, Minister of Home Affairs Edmund Hinkson said something had to be done to help reduce the prison population. “The reality is that we have too high a number of reoffenders . . . . over 60 per cent. About 40 per cent of that is those who commit a crime within six months or so after coming out of prison. “A lot of these are related to drug offences and we are trying to address that at a societal level. There needs to be discussion on alternative sentencing such as ankle monitoring and electronic surveillance,” he told the gathering. Hinkson said the prison, which was built to house 1 250, now had 800 inmates and he was looking to cut down that number, as the alternatives came with a cost. (DN)

Nia Ali produced a personal best time of 12.34 seconds to win the race ahead of fellow American Kendra Harrison, who clocked 12.46 seconds. PETROLEUM PRICES DOWN – The retail prices of gasoline, diesel and kerosene will decrease, effective midnight Sunday, October 6. Gasoline will be adjusted from $3.81 per litre to $3.65 per litre, which represents a decrease of 16 cents; the price of diesel will drop by 1 cent, from $3.02 per litre to $3.01 per litre, and kerosene will go from $1.35 per litre to $1.31 per litre, a reduction of 4 cents. These price adjustments are in keeping with Government’s policy of allowing retail prices to be reflective of those on the international market. (BGIS)
FOGGING SCHEDULE FOR OCTOBER 7 TO 11 – The Ministry of Health and Wellness’ fogging programme will continue in five parishes next week. On Monday, October 7, the St Andrew districts to be fogged are Savannah Road, Shorey Village, Worrell’s Road, Belleplaine, Ermy Bourne Highway, Lakes Village, and the environs. St Peter will be treated on Tuesday, October 8, including Speightstown Bypass, Queen Street, Bovell Road, Mango Lane, Chapel Street, Gooding Alley, Major Walk, Sand Street, Church Street and nearby districts, as well as Mile-and-a-Quarter, Olton Road, Ashton Hall, Clarkes Road, Corbins Road with Avenues, Greaves Road, Reservoir Road, Millionaire Road and surrounding areas.On Wednesday, October 9, the St Lucy and St Peter districts of Checker Hall, Checker Hall Development, Rock Hall Road, Fustic Village, Sutherland and the environs, as well as Gills Road, Around the Town, Farm Road, Niles Road, Farm Tenantry Road, Burma Road, Battaleys, and surrounding districts will be treated. Areas to be fogged in St George on Thursday, October 10, are Rowans Park, Rowans Park South, Thorpes Cottage, Walkers Park East, Walkers Close and neighbouring districts. The team will be in St James on Friday, October 11, to fog Cemetery Lane, Mayhoe Avenue, Cordia Avenue, Flamboyant Avenue, Palm Row and the environs, as well as Paynes Bay, Laynes Road, Holders Hill, Chapel Road and surrounding areas.Fogging will take place between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day.
