何もしない贅沢と暇つぶし

　先日、とある公共の図書館で４時間ほどゆったりと過ごした。そこで目にした光景を書き留めておく。

　図書館にはだいたい、雑誌や新聞を置いてある、人がたむろできるコーナーがあるのだが、そこにたむろしている人のなかに図書館で「時間つぶし」をしているようにしか見えない人が少なからずいた。

　性別は男性。歳の頃は６０～７０歳。他の人とコミュニケーションしているようには見えず、活字を目では追っているがどこか寂しそうに見える。この人たちは何者なのか？

　若い時はありあまるほどの時間を持っている。しかし自由に使えるお金は少ない。（気づいたときはすでに遅しだが）この状態が最高の贅沢だ。成長して会社勤めをするようになると自由に使えるお金はできるが自由に使える時間は少ない。会社を定年退職すると自由に使えるお金が少しと、そこそこの自由時間ができるのだが、その大切な自由時間の過ごし方が判っていない。そんなところだろうか。あるいは家に居場所がないか、その両方か。

　日本人はお金の使い方が上手ではない、と言われる。それは時間の上手な使い方が判っていない、ということなのだろう。若者があこがれるような余暇の過ごし方を発明したいものだ。
