Ooooo, that’s a good one! Though I’ve never written for them, probably Sarah/Jareth from Labyrinth. Like, that’s old-school OTP right there that my BFF and I still swoon over, I still see great fanart for since it’s such a classic, and I’m frequently reminded of how much potential and nuance there is in their story during those rare moments I go back to Deviantart to read the webcomics Roommates and Girls Next Door.

Oof.

Zelda and Link tumble into Vah Rudania, expecting it to be lit only to find that it’s not. They’re in a mess of tangled limbs—a calf against an ankle, thigh against knee, her arm on his chest, his hand on her waist to (not quite successfully) brace her fall. The ground is cold and hard and overall unforgiving. It takes two tries for Zelda to sit completely upright. 

Link follows suit, heaving himself up before blindly reaching for her. Of all the things they had on them, a torch is not one of them. Not even the blue flames are burning atop the Divine Beast.

“I swear I turned the lights on last time,” he grumbles, slipping his fingers between hers. It’s a casual action, one they’ve been accustomed to doing as they travel across Hyrule. She tries to think nothing of it, pretends it doesn’t still make her stomach do somersaults. 

He stands and tugs her up, and while he’s clearly adept at traversing through land and water, rough and smooth terrains, and light and dark sceneries, Zelda is not. Or perhaps Link had just pulled a little too hard. Either way, she once again falls forward—right onto his chest. He catches her this time, scooping underneath her arms and chuckling at her missteps.

“Easy there, Zelda,” he says with that lilt in his tone that warms her to the tips of her toes, “If you wanted me to hold you, you could have just said so.”

He’s making a jest, but her insides are knotting up and it’s pitch black and well, didn’t he just offer? The darkness emboldens her and Zelda grips onto his shirt to snuggle in closer.

“Okay.”

“Okay?”

“Hold me.”

Link takes a sharp intake of breath and she can hear the speeding cadence of his heart. His fingers press into her shoulder blades, steeling the almost imperceptible shake of his hands, before curling up around her shoulders and resting his head against hers.

“Like this?”

She nods, her cheeks sliding against his. It prickles her skin, the slight stubble that’s growing in. She draws her knuckles across it, then down and along his jaw, and settles just below his lips. His breathing thins, mere wisps of air against her ear. 

“If I asked you to kiss me, would you?”

He swallows audibly. “Of course.”

“Then kiss me.”

She feels him stiffen at her request, as if he hadn’t thought she would actually request such a thing. For a moment, she thinks she’s read this all wrong, that he’s been responding to her as his charge all this this time, and that’s not what she wants. She wants him to look at her as a woman, someone that is his equal, someone he can slip into bed with at any time, and not only when she’s having nightmares.

(And then she won’t have to lie, won’t have to pretend the reason she can’t sleep is not really because she simply craves his touch.)

Zelda is just about to extricate herself from his arms, grateful that the lack of light can hide her embarrassment, when his fingers come up to glide along her face. They brush over the ridges of brows, down the slope of her nose, across the arches of her cheekbones, then come together to outline her lips. She feels him lean down, feels the tip of his nose graze hers experimentally, before tentatively pressing his mouth against hers.

Belatedly, Zelda realizes she doesn’t actually know how to kiss someone. She’s never been kissed—has he?—and books never really gave a descriptive run down of how to do it properly. She tries to follow his lead, fumbling to pucker her lips when he does, taking breaths in the minute gaps he provides in between the gentle caresses. When he steps backwards, she falls in sync with him, until he’s suddenly against a wall and they’re sliding down and down and down, and then he’s on the floor and she’s on his lap, and the shy kisses they’re sharing seem incongruent with the intimate nature of their position.

Link pulls away, and it’s only his hands on either side of her ribs that keeps her from chasing after his lips. It’s still too dark to make out their surroundings, but the luminous glow of his eyes are bright and enrapturing, and Zelda can’t look away even if she tries.

“Is this okay?” he whispers, as if he’s afraid if he speaks too loud he’ll break whatever spell that has her willingly tethered to him. She thinks he's being silly with this unfounded fear. After all, it has always been him in her heart.

(For years and decades and centuries. For millennia upon millenia and across lifetimes. It’s always been just him.)

Zelda nods fervently, then remembers he can’t see her, and says, “More than okay.”

She kisses him this time, giving into her urge. It’s still clumsy and laced with inexperience, but Link doesn’t seem to mind. Eager hands skim up and down her back, and she takes to combing through his hair, accidentally tugging his head back and eliciting a gasp into her mouth. Zelda pauses, wishing for the first time she could see his expression, but his lips quickly find hers again, tender and reassuring. His thumb and index come up to grasp her chin, the slight pressure encouraging the parting of her own lips, and then it’s his tongue stroking hers and his quiet moans she’s swallowing. 

He drags his mouth away from hers, but before she can protest, he’s kissing down her neck and lingering where it meets her shoulder. His teeth nips at her skin, sucks and licks at the flesh there. The sensation is foreign; sends jolts down her spine and has her gripping the back of his head, fingers buried in blond locks to keep him where she wants him. His name tears from her throat, keening, hoarse.

“Li—”

“Link! Princess Zelda! Are you two in here already, goro?”

They spring apart, Zelda clamoring off his lap and onto the floor. Near the entrance of Vah Rudania are two lit torches, both brandished by Yunobo, the new Goron Champion, as he teeters on the ramp. The flames flicker and swing as he glances back and forth in an effort to locate them, but thankfully, the illumination doesn’t quite reach to where they are.

Both she and Link laugh softly to themselves, and Zelda hoists herself up with Link following quickly after to make sure she doesn’t stumble. “Over here!” he calls out, and by the time Yunobo makes it over to them, their clothes are straightened out and the flush on their cheeks are mere tricks of the light. 

If Yunobo notices that they’re standing just a bit closer than when they arrived, he doesn’t comment on it.

Regarding the BOTW Big Bang

I won’t be participating in the BOTW Big Bang anymore. 

This is the timeline of events as I understand it:

Last night, in the BOTW Big Bang Discord, the discussion was around Zelda/Urbosa

A minor in the server said that that ship makes them uncomfortable and then they pointed out the fact that Zelda is 16 and Urbosa is presumably around Zelda’s mother’s age. This would be pedophilia.

A mod within the server first said something like “why do you care, they’re fictional characters”, which is... uhhh... So, at best such a comment is insensitive and at worst feels like a bit of a slippery slope.

And then the mod accused the minor of being anti-”pro-ship”.

Lots of discourse ensued on the channel in the server and eventually the minor apologized for “causing drama”. This person never should have been made to feel like they needed apologize for stating something made them uncomfortable. 

There were people who defended the minor and said very reasonable things like “If someone says they’re uncomfortable, maybe we should listen to them.”

This morning, the mods announced new rules for the Big Bang stating the server is “PRO-SHIP” and that anyone shaming or bashing a ship would be “automatically banned”.

When I first read the announcement, I felt a bit weirded out. I didn’t know any of the context and since then, I’ve learned the rest of the details as stated above. 

This evening, the moderators announced that the big bang would now be 18+ only. 

I had been in the BOTW Big Bang server for a couple months watching some of the announcements with concern. @spicychestnut123​ details the background of what was going on in the channel these last few weeks well in this post. She worded everything that’s been going through my head so perfectly, so please do give it all a read. 

I feel like I could or should say more about this, but ultimately the thing that really gets me the most is that a minor participant said they were uncomfortable over content that was shared and a moderator then accused them of being anti-”pro-ship”. The mods are there to moderate, that means they are there to protect people within the server. Instead, they shamed this young person. And then, instead of apologizing or reconsidering their position, the moderators have doubled down and made the whole event 18+ only. 

I’m no longer participating in the BOTW Big Bang and if you are, I’d urge you to proceed with caution.

what’s going on with the BOTW Big Bang?

NOTE: this post was originally posted as a reply to this announcement made earlier today by the BOTW Big Bang mods. I’m reposting it in the general tag for informational purposes since the mods have hidden my reblog, along with other dissenting opinions.

for those out of the loop: this announcement was made by the mods because a participant in the BOTW Big Bang Discord server posted in the #shipping channel that they were concerned about art that was posted of a ship.

the relationship was Urbosa/Zelda.

the participant stated that they were a minor.

Zelda is 16 or 17 years old in the game’s canon.

Urbosa is around Zelda’s mother’s age, which can be anywhere above 16 years older than Zelda.

the participant stated that they were uncomfortable because this resembled a pedophilic relationship.

the participant was given a warning by mods that they were being an anti-ship which was not allowed in the server.

at least one other participant agreed with the original participant’s sentiment.

the original participant apologized for their statement.

shortly after, the #shipping channel was completely deleted.

I would like to state at this time that I am a ship-friendly person!!! I firmly believe that everyone has a right to ship whatever they want, to revel in their own kinks, and to express their own opinion on the Internet. Urbosa/Zelda shipping is not the issue here.

rather, as the mods have said:

“This event is meant to celebrate the characters and dynamics of BotW and give an opportunity for fans to create content they love. This has been the case since the inception of the event, and it will continue to be the case until the stories are written and the art is drawn.”

and yet, by banning minors – SIX WEEKS AFTER SIGNUPS OPENED – the mods have taken away that opportunity to celebrate and to create content for BOTW from a subset of those fans: their fans under 18 years of age. which is a key target audience of Nintendo’s for the LoZ series.

this is NOT how an inclusive community operates. it also does not solve the issue!!! adults can be uncomfortable with a particular ship for whatever reason too!!! and i do NOT mean that certain fanart has to be banned outright either – but at the very least, make efforts to keep it limited to the people that are itching to see it. that’s what a good moderator does, yeah??

i believe that a good moderator also does NOT accuse participants with legitimate concerns of “shaming” and “bullying” what folks ship. just as different people like different ships, different people also have different boundaries! a good moderator will work to accommodate those with stricter boundaries, not… get rid of them completely??

I also think that A GOOD MODERATOR WOULD NOT CENSOR FELLOW FANS THAT DO NOT AGREE WITH HOW THEY RUN THINGS. please see screenshots under the cut:
