[image description: a cartoony, shaded drawing of the side of a spotted skunk's head. the light is coming from the bottom left, illuminating their neck but leaving their face somewhat shrouded in darkness. they have a neutral expression on their face, although their resting face looks slightly angry. they are looking to the left and have dark eyes and fur, a white spot above their ear, a white spot on their nose bridge, a pink nose and a squiggly horizontal white stripe running from below their ear down their neck. end of image description]

Eastern spotted skunks (Spilogale putorius) are small, elusive, nocturnal skunks found throughout much of the eastern and central US and small parts of Canada and Mexico. Like the more familiar striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) spotted skunks are opportunistic omnivores, with past studies suggesting a particular reliance on insects for at least part of the year. They're considered Vulnerable by the IUCN, with each of the three subspecies likely impacted by different threats.

Western spotted skunk lying against rock near cactus, ca. 1965
35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Carnivora; Family: Mustelidae; Genus: Spilogale; Genus species: Spilogale gracilis. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 23-34 cm; Identification: The Western spotted skunk is mostly black with variable white spots and stripes on its body; Habitat: Wastelands, brush, wooded areas; Diet: Omnivore: rodents, birds, eggs, insects, fruit; Reproduction: While mating occurs only during the late summer, females give birth either year-round or only in the spring depending on their location. Implantation of the fertilized eggs is delayed, followed by a four-month gestation period. On average, 4-5 young are born at a time; Social Structure: The skunk, as a general rule, is not a social animal; but the spotted skunk is more social than other skunks, and it will share dens in the winter; Behavior: Spotted skunks are nocturnal. Although they are mainly terrestrial, they will sometimes take shelter in trees. If threatened, a skunk will stamp its front feet, raise its tail, and walk with stiff legs. It will then spray a foul-smelling substance, aiming for the attacker's face; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: A skunk's spray can cause intense irritation of the eyes and temporary blindness. Their aim is accurate up to 2 meters. Rabies is commonly carried by skunks in the United States.

I wanted to know, what are Al Urus’s, Spil’s, and Lantana’s name puns? (Sorry if I spelled the last name wrong)
Al Urus = ailurus fulgens (scientific name for red panda)
Spil O'Gale = spilogale putorius (scientific name for spotted skunk)
Lantana Bokay = lantana is a toxic flower, and bokay is a phonetic spelling of boquet

First of my March Mammal Madness art, now that it’s officially been released! I’m very happy with how both of these turned out <3
The glyphs behind the portrait are of my own invention, but styled after the Mixtec art in the codex Zouche-Nuttall. The skunk’s home range overlaps with the original home of the Mixtec culture, and so I thought that would be an interesting connection.

Eastern spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius)
The eastern spotted skunk is a small, relatively slender skunk found throughout the eastern United States and in small areas of Canada and Mexico. Males, at 46.3–68.8 cm in total length, are large than females, at 35–54.4 cm. They are much more active than any other type of skunk. Eastern spotted skunks seem to prefer forest edges and upland prairie grasslands, especially where rock outcrops and shrub clumps are present. In western counties, it relies heavily on riparian corridors where woody shrubs and woodland edges are present. Woody fencerows, odd areas, and abandoned farm buildings are also important habitat for Eastern Spotted Skunks.Eastern spotted skunks are quite secretive and crafty creatures, and it is a rarity for humans to see them. They are also nocturnal and tend to be more active during dry cool nights rather than warm wet nights. Although these skunks do not hibernate, they do tend to greatly reduce their activity when enduring intensely warm summers or very cold winters. In addition to performing a handstand before spraying a potential predator, the skunk also performs foot stamping, which involves the skunk stamping its feet on the ground in order to warn an approaching predator. The stamping can be heard for several meters away and is usually followed by the skunk spraying its odorous solution.

Skunks, Part 2: There are actually two species of Skunks in Canada, but the Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis, shown here) is the one widespread across the country, while the Western Spotted Skunk (Spilogale gracilis) enters Canada at the Southern end of British Columbia. The rest of my post is specifically about the Striped Skunk. The most distinctive feature of Skunks is their smell. Newborn Skunks are blind and deaf, and yet they already contain the defensive musk (although they only learn to discharge it properly at a few weeks old). Skunks are hesitant to release their musk, as they only have a small amount (though that small amount, a few teaspoons, is extremely potent). They will attempt at first to dissuade any potential attackers with a display of drumming feet and hissing. If you're witness to this, it's best to take the Skunk at its word, and leave it alone. . . .
