Red Flags in Spirit Work
Pay in mind, these are my experiences on what I've seen and what I had experienced myself. Take everything with a grain of salt.
.... Spirit work is regaining a lot of popularity and I feel it's important to help others understand that discernment, and common sense are extremely important. Please, please practice discernment and take as much time to vet spirits and entities. Unfortunately, I have seen people who either didn't have spirit friends that they mentioned, or they were bamboozled. --- Here the top signs that it's probably not real, or you're being played: 1. They magically show up when you just read about them or watched things about them. (Hyper-fixation isn't always a sign, at least that's what I believe) 2. All of your "spirit companions" just want to jump your bones and they all look conveniently attractive to you. 3. They all have the same interests and morals as you. What's important to you may not be important to them. 4. All companions have the same personality. 5. They're all special versions of the species they came from. 6. They act and look like animated/fictional characters and protagonists. 7. They cater to every single emotion you have and justify your actions -- that's actually a sign it's a toxic spirit/entity if they're real.
8. Promoting that YOU are the main character.
9. Upon knowing them with barely any time in vetting, they say exactly what you want them to say to you -- which means they're probably not real or you're just self narrating over them. 10. If the quality of your life suddenly goes down without much explanation with endless bad luck or decrease in health condition, that's a serious problem for you may have a parasitic entity/spirit. 11. You bought a Perfect Sexy Vampire Lord named Voltor on Ebay or Etsy for $20.99 plus tax. --- Now, if we're talking thoughtforms, that's another story...but even with that thrown in, these concerns are still relevant.

The idea of companion spirits is so exciting to me. Margaret sounds incredibly helpful. How do you go about conjuring them? Is it something you're able to do for other people? I'd love to have a spirit friend hanging around.
I would like to point out that as far as I'm aware, "spirit companions" refers to a relatively specific niche of spirit work as a whole. When someone says the phrase spirit companion, they are typically referring to a type of spirit work revolving around the actions of a human conjurer who is able usually able to astral travel.
The conjurer is the person whom, through acts of magic or traversing the infinite astral, meets various spirits and forms contacts or compacts with them. These compacts usually revolve around establishing a point of communication so the spirit and conjurer can contact each other at will. This point of communication is often a physical vessel, but is not always a physical vessel. (The vessel, when physical, is akin to a spirit house dedicated to that spirit alone - it allows them to enter our world through an object, and make it much easier to call on them if you possess the object - but they can leave it any time and refuse to respond to calls.)
There is an entire industry of professional conjurers who perform the services of meeting, contracting with, and "delivering" spirits to clients. My friend who helped me meet Margaret was not a professional conjurer, but the concept is much the same: she traversed to the Stephen King extended universe, met a byrus worm, established a contract with her, and helped her reach me.
NOW, the reason I say all of that is in order to say this:
Spirit companions, astral travel, conjurers, and spirit shops are absolutely not the only way to meet spirits, and the entire process is absolutely unnecessary for many people.
You can go outside and meet spirits right now. You can do an exercise to build an astral temple and go meet beings within your own custom little worlds. You can create servitors and interact with them.
You can ask a god to assign you a spiritual helper. You can get a stuffed animal and start treating it as a living being until it develops into one. You can write a hypersigil and use it to create a servitor.
You can learn to travel to sabbat on full moons and ask the Goat-Footed God to give you a familiar in exchange for a favor he will cash in on some wind-seared night when the world has been gray for far too many days in a row.
You can pray and ask for a spirit of such-and-such type to appear. You can paint sigils on a bottle and, after claiming power over all living beings, command a spirit to appear therein and be your friend.
You can discover the nature of your fetch-beast or hag-self.
You can do many things, some of them better ideas than others.
Choose an area of spirit-work that makes you feel fascinated and research it. It's a good idea to focus on learning how to interact with spirits early on, as this is a process which can be very difficult for some people.

Uhm... I'm being active again in my witchy and spiritual ways too! So it should be about the time in which I'm actively searching for new wonderful blogs and people to interact with. So, can you interact or reblog if you:
Are a European witch (both born in the Eu or from European families elsewhere);
A Gaelic polytheist;
An Italian witch (2nd, 3rd generation American-Italian are welcomed too, bruh, you are Italian as me!)
A polytheist who follows the Etrurian gods
A devotee of any God(s) (I'd like to interact more with devotees of any traditions!)
Have one or more spirit companions
Are an Otherkind (no matter your specific kind)
Have astral travel experience (of course beginners are welcome too!)
Have a connection with the spirits of the land in your place.
Are a witch or a spiritual practitioner of your faith (of any traditions and religions, It would be my honor to be enriched by others' experiences and cultures)

Some Thoughts on Large vs Small Spirit Families
Back in the day I used to see a lot of people claiming that “if you work with a large number of spirits you don’t actually care about them” or “you can’t just collect spirits” or “you shouldn’t have more than x amount” and whatnot. I see less of that nowadays, but that may be due to lessened activity in Witchblr (or just that I’m not digging around as much).
Anyways, here’s my two cents as someone who works with spirits
This is all highly dependent on context and the intent behind said relationships. I don’t think any sort of hard rule of “no more than x spirits” can ever apply unilaterally. But it is very possible to get in over your head with these things, or to be unfair/unintentionally harmful in these types of relationships. Some things to consider:
What kind of beings are you working with? Are these creatures that are 100% fully and totally dependent on you to exist or thrive? The more active a presence you or the spirit need to be in the other’s existence, obviously the fewer beings you should involve yourself with. Don’t wanna spread yourself too thin or accidentally drop your promised obligations.
What is the purpose of this relationship? Is it strictly business – you provide offerings in exchange for magical assistance? Is there a mentor-student dynamic between the two of you? Is it a romantic involvement? Are you just buddies that chill over drinks now and then? Or is this a spirit you just met in passing and don’t currently have any intention of contacting again? Your level of commitment to a spirit is a key factor in how many you should involve yourself with. Make sure there’s fair reciprocation on both sides and that all parties involved feel they are getting what they want out of this relationship.
To put these concepts into practice –
The majority of the beings I work with are living entities from other realms. Essentially, they are communicating with me, astral traveling to me, or using bilocation in the same way that we in this realm would astral travel to other worlds. So that means that most of these beings have other, physical lives to attend to. They might have jobs, family, or other obligations. They also, most importantly, are having their physical needs met in their home realm. I can offer them food, drinks, energy, or other gifts in this realm, but these beings do not require them from me to survive.
So in cases like these, I don’t need to be paying constant attention to each and every being. We check in regularly, much like how you might visit a friend once or twice a month. Sometimes we plan more in-depth activities on a schedule, but that’s on an individual basis. Amongst these beings, there are a small amount that may hang around me much more frequently, but that’s due to a lack of obligations in their home realm.
On the flip side of things, some practitioners may want to only work with one or two beings, but that’s either purely personal preference (nothing wrong with that!) or because their level of involvement with said beings is enough that adding any more to the group would be unfair or would complicate things. Maybe these beings do require daily upkeep in order to thrive, or feel uncomfortable with too many others being around/overcrowded environments. Just like with our physical friends in this world, some may enjoy large chaotic gatherings while others want an intimate get-together and still others may enjoy either depending on context.
It IS important to note that there are people out there who go about all this in a less-that-desirable way. What sort of attitude do they have about their companions? Are they referred to more as a collectible, like a beanie baby? Or are they treated like a living, breathing person with feelings? It’s fairly easy to spot the red flags if you know what to look for. I personally am wary of anyone who talks about their spirit families in a very transient, shallow sort of way, as if they are looking more to show off what wild and unique creatures they have befriended, rather than just talking about these beings like one would tell a story about a friend/coworker/teacher.
Anyhow, this is a little more rambling than I originally intended, but –
TL;DR no one but you can decide how small or large your spirit family “should” be, and as long as everyone involved is benefitting/having their end of any bargain upheld, that’s all that matters. Don’t gatekeep just because someone’s practice is different than yours; if no one is being hurt or unjustly sidelined then it’s not your business. Have fun out there everyone!

One thing that has always disappointed me about Wynne’s portrayal in Dragon Age Origins is that pretty much all of the player’s interactions with her occur after she is possessed by a spirit of Faith. She has, what, 30 seconds or so of screen time (standing around at Ostagar) prior to this life-changing, even self-changing, event?
The games show us what possession by a Fade spirit does (or at least can do) to a person through the story arc of Anders. Merging with a spirit of Justice radically alters his personality — in Dragon Age II, the way he speaks, his interactions with other characters, his outlook on life, etc. all much more strongly resemble the original Justice than the original human Anders of DAO Awakening. It also imbues him with a spirit’s burning antagonism towards demons and anything even remotely demon-related (whereas Anders the human didn’t express any strong opinions on demons or blood magic) and overriding need to fulfill its purpose. The quest log immediately after completing his recruitment quest (Tranquility, Act 1) reads, “Anders was revealed to be a spirit of Justice” (not simply that Anders was possessed by or host to a spirit of justice), and he himself elaborates early on, “He's gone now. He's part of me. It's not like we can... have a conversation. I feel his thoughts as my own. Not even the greatest scholar could tell you where I end and he begins.” David Gaider, who wrote Anders and Justice in Awakening and plotted out their story arc in DA2 (before handing off the writing to Jennifer Hepler), explained, “The character in DA2 is not Anders. Or, I should say, it’s not solely Anders. If one was looking for him to be solely Anders, that character is not there. He is both Anders and Justice. As I’ve said previously regarding Anders in DA2, if there was anything I would go back and try differently, it would be to make the transition between the old character and the new a bit less jarring.” There’s an entire 10+ hour game (Awakening) featuring the “real” (or perhaps simply “original”) Anders, in which he is the first lasting companion to be recruited and in which the player gets to learn in depth his history, his hopes and dreams, his fears, and just who he is as a man. Regardless of your perceptions of Justice-Anders and their actions in DA2, I believe there’s enormous tragic value in witnessing a character’s loss of self or “death of personality,” as Anders the human becomes subsumed by Justice the spirit. Unfortunately, you only really see this directly if you played Awakening first — while Gaider had intended “to show his progression over the acts” from an Anders-dominant to a Justice-dominant personality, in Hepler’s hands the switch between the Anders of Awakening and Justice-Anders of DA2 is pretty “jarring” (in Gaider’s words) and left many DA fans confused. While in all honesty I’m deeply dissatisfied with the way Justice-Anders was ultimately written (to clarify, I’m referring to the “how” more so than the “what”), at least we do get to know Anders and can observe the change, with fairly long before-and-after shots to compare and write metas about.
But we get none of this with Wynne.
True, a Faith-possessed Wynne discusses her past on multiple occasions, although for the most part she tends to refer to the distant past, her childhood and ‘wild youth’ so to speak, and this distance makes it difficult to disentangle the effects of aging and gradual adjustment/resignation to life in the Circle from the direct effects of spirit possession.  There appears to be continuity in her overall beliefs from shortly before and after — she was deeply religious, identified as an Aequitarian by Niall (i.e., believing in reforming the Circle while remaining under Chantry rule), opposed to Uldred in his efforts to ally with Loghain and seek independence from the Chantry (according to her Codex), “trying to save what was left of the Circle” during Uldred’s uprising (see Codex), and so on — and she indicates that the spirit of Faith had taken an interest in her (acting as a sort of ‘guardian angel’) years before the possession, albeit for reasons she doesn’t quite understand. Faith’s attraction to Wynne could have been based on the latter’s personality traits, beliefs, or life struggles (considering that she had turned to, well, faith to cope with hurt and anger at being imprisoned in the Circle), and the preexisting similarity between them could account for the apparent continuity in Wynne’s attitudes and behavior. But again, we have to listen to retrospective descriptions and make inferences rather than actually directly see what’s going on.
So who was the real (or perhaps “original”) Wynne?
Don’t get me wrong; I hate awkward flashback sequences as much as the next guy, and I’m not going to shed tears over it. But it would be cool if Gaider gave us some prequel material.

Hello Melias! What's your etsy shop? And I was wondering your opinion on people who sell spirit companion services and pacts with demons? Like I saw one that sells a pact with 72 demons, is that even possible? Thanks
Hello,
As I have said before, shops selling spirits tend to "enslave" them and make a profit by doing that. In this case, they are no different to slavers. As my best and finest friends have been spirits, I am definitely in opposition with this practice. If you wish a spirit friend or companion, learn the way to approach them and to form a relationship. They are not objects to be traded, and you can be certain that the vast majority that get sold are either scams or actually selling tar spirits (the seller may or may not know this). Either way the buyer is in most cases deceived. And I am not phased by certain extreme cases who are professing to be "honorable and rescuing stray spirits" - they account less than 10% of the total trade, and even then, the practice remains somewhat dubious. I've read the most absurd cases of trying to sell "ancient dragons" as pet spirits, or "lucifer's lieutenants/daughter(s)" , or even Archangels (!) This is surely ludicrous, if one thinks about it for a moment: ancient dragons... would allow themselves to be captured like butterflies and traded to random people? Or... Lucifer would be OK with selling his daughter or lieutenant to strangers? Or the archangels for that matter.... it's absolutely crazy. But people sometimes are too eager to believe, and they get deceived. It's rather sad, but true. As for demonic pacts, I will say it again: the only people who could legitimately sell a demonic pact are Demons themselves; either through an elaborate process in spirit, or in the flesh in the case of illuminated people with demonic cores. Anything else is basically not going to work much, and the demons scoff at it as counterfeit, like people producing counterfeit money. Imagine the surprise of an occultist (or worse, a random person) who bought such a pact and suddenly meets that very same demon one day, who looks rather annoyed (to put it mildly), and the human is trying to make demands... the rest, I leave to your imagination. A pact with all 72 demons? That's out of the question. Mass-produced pacts, or pacts with a multitude of demons in one go are fake, and if you see something like that, it's obvious that the seller is either a fraud, or is clueless about how things work. As for my services, I thank you for your interest; you may contact me by DM for the link.

question for other spirit keepers!
as my keep grows, some of my companions now have very similar names.  i was tagging posts with initials, but that’s become harder to keep track of and a little more.  i’ve been thinking of assigning them fake names for my blog and for ease of talking about them with others.  so my question is this:
would assigning fake names to my spirit companions for public use, give others any power over them or insight into my practice/keep?
i try to be as hypervigilant as i can, because i seem to attract unwanted attention from malicious beings and from people who intend to send malicious magic my way (should probably look into that tbh, it’s been that way my whole life).  i want to be sure my keep and i will be safe and maintain privacy as much as possible while still being involved in communities.

Spirit Companion Advice: Names.
-- For anyone who is public about their spirit companions: May seem obvious to some, but I do not recommend sharing your entity's/spirit's real name (Or the name you normally use for them in spirit work practice) out there. The exception is with a very trusted few. The other exception if the spirit/entity does want to be very public and getting something out of it. Names do have power, but you can also invent a fake name with setting the intention for cloaking or decoy. Privacy is also an important factor, of course. For example, you and the spirit/entity can come up with a suitable name, use the name to make a sigil and the sigil's intention can be protective or with decoy/deceptive purposes incase someone has ill intentions. ----- This came to mind after someone asked this question earlier that jogged my memories on why I take great precautions myself. I had a lot of weirdos in the past who had tried to copy me and my spirit companions by our function, energy, and even our names. Some even tried to create servitors in attempts to create a near exact replica of my Spirit Family. It was just creepy, disrespectful and frustrating. In addition, I had someone tried to supposedly "take" one of my spirit Family members by force believing they're far more fit for her. She ended up being a stalker. (And no, this person wasn't even close to making it happen) I do not wish for that experience for anyone following this path and minding their own business. Protect your beloved spirit team in any way you are able to. I know my Family aren't helpless by a long shot but they are my Family, and I will always be protective of who's precious to me.

what dies it mean to Have a conjured companion like the obe you mentioned? sounds rad as hell but what does that actually.. consist of in practice
I work with spirits pretty regularly, and I consider "conjured companions" to be of a different category than the spirits I work with as part of my spirituality.
With Margaret (the worm), I don't really interact with her. I thought she was gone since I didn't interact with her for years. Then one day I "tuned in" and she was still there, sliming up my neck like nobody's business.
We don't talk or anything. At the time I was doing lots of dumb stuff and kept struggling with what some people call 'energy parasites.' So, Margaret's job was to eat them. Her entire body is just one long mouth!
People do lots of things with conjured companions. Watch movies with them, read books with them. Chat with them, etc. Generally a person needs to be able to communicate with spirits in order to have this sort of reciprocal relationship, so figuring that out is a good first step.
Although I don't really work with conjured companions now (with the exception of Margaret, of course), I'm grateful for my time spent in that world. It's greatly informed my abilities, understanding of my own cosmology, and many good friends were made along the way.
