APPALACHIAN FOLKLORE 101
Appalachia has a rich history in the united states, which goes farther back than most tend to give it credit for. The Appalachian mountains are millions of years old, and humans have only lived in the region for 16,000 years or so, which means the mountains are bound to hold some mysteries and legends.
Tumblr media
Many of these stories, and folk practices originate from the Native Americans, specifically Cherokee, and are mixed in with the superstitions brought over from the old world specifically English, Irish, and Scottish. As well as the practices brought over from the African Continent During the Slave Trade. The Native population assisted the early settlers in Appalachia with ways to survive the area, grow food, and even forage for one of Appalachia's staple foods, RAMPS!!!
Let's delve into the history of Appalachian Folklore and the origins of everyone's favorite stories.
Cryptids and Myths
This is one of the most famous aspects of Appalachian folklore and one which outsiders know the most about, Appalachian Myths and their Cryptids that follow. Below I will go over a few of the more famous ones, which many have learned about, either second-hand or through living in the area.
The Moon-Eyed People
There was a group of humanoids called the Moon-Eyed People, who were short, bearded, and had pale skin with large, bright eyes. They were completely nocturnal due to their eyes being extremely sensitive to light. Although not mythical, they were considered a separate race of people by some. The tribes viewed them as a threat and forced them out of their caves on a full moon night. They were said to have scattered to other parts of Appalachia as the moon’s light was too bright for their eyes. There are some early structures that are believed to be related to the Moon-Eyed People, dating back to 400 BCE. Some theories suggest that they were early European settlers who arrived much before Columbus discovered the Americas. Other theories suggest they were people who had Albanism.
Tumblr media

Spearfinger
Spearfinger is a Cherokee legend of a shapeshifting, stone-skinned witch with a long knife in place of one of her fingers. She often was described as an old woman, which she would take the form of to convince Cherokee children that she was their grandmother. She would sit with them, brush their hair until they fell asleep, and then kill them with her “spear finger.” She had a love of human livers which she would extract from the bodies of those she killed. It was said she left no visible scars on her victims. She carried her own heart in her hand to protect it, as it was her one weakness. As the legend goes, she was captured and defeated with the help of several birds that carried the information to defeat her. Though she has been destroyed, sometimes you can hear her cackles and songs throughout the mountains.
Tumblr media

W*ndigo
This spirit is said to go to where its name is called allowed so since most of us already know the name I won't be writing it out in completion. So out of respect for some of our native readers, it will remain censored
The W*ndigo is a creature, sometimes referred to as an evil spirit, that is said to be 15 feet tall with a body that is thin, with skin pulled so tight that its bones are visible. Many native legends view it as a spirit of greed, gluttony, and insatiable hunger. It is a flesh-eating beast that is considered most active during the colder months, and its presence is easily felt and smelt. It has been described as having a distinct smell of rot and decay due to its skin being ripped and unclean. It produces an overwhelming urge of greed and insatiable want. Most notably, it is not one to chase or seek after its prey; instead, it uses its terrifying mimicry skill. It often mimics human voices, screams, loved ones, or anything that might entice its victim to come to it. In some cases, it is believed the W*ndigo is a spirit that can possess other humans and fill them with greed and selfishness, turning them into W*ndigos as well.
Appalachian Folk Practices
Many of the common Appalachian folk practices stem from things the Native Americans and Enslaved Africans taught them mixed in with cultural practices from Europe. Here I will go over some of the most common practices done by the Appalachian people
Water Dowsing
water dowsing is a practice that has been done for hundreds of years in many different cultures. This practice was brought over by the European settlers and was how many people of the time found where to dig for their water. The practice itself is simple in nature, you take a forked branch from a tree and hold it in both hands and walk around once the stick points down due to the electromagnetic current that's where you dig your well.
this isn't exactly the best way to find water but many people still do it to this day.

Bottle Trees
This practice originated in the Congo area of Africa, in the 9th century A.D. brought to America by the slave trade, in the 17th century. Bottle Trees, were popular in the American South and up into Appalachia, the spirits are said to be attracted to the blue color of the bottles, and captured at night, then when the sun rises it destroys the evil spirits.
This is still practiced in the modern era by many Appalachian Folk Practitioners

SIN EATING
This practice originates from the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians, it branched to many different cultures and has been practiced since antiquity by many Christian and Catholic tribes. And later making its way to America via immigration. The process was once a profession in Appalachia, in which food was placed on or near the deceased and a person dressed in all black would eat the food absolving the dead of all of their earthly sins. This essentially cemented their ability to get into heaven. The practice while sparsely done any more as a profession, it can still be found in many peoples funeral services to this day around the world.
Many cultures still do this practice and the sin eaters usually choose to hide their identity as the practice is seen as taboo to this day.
Popular Herbs To Forage In Appalachia Folk Practices
Wild Leeks or RAMPS!!!
Allium tricoccum, are a species of wild onion native to North America. They are a delicacy, and hold a special place in the hearts of many Appalachians. Native Americans such as the Cherokee ate the plant and used it medicinally for a variety of purposes including as a spring tonic. Early European settlers learned how to Forage from the Indigenous People and continued to eat and use ramps medicinally. Ramps provide many nutrients and minerals and historically have been used to nourish people after harsh winters.
Tumblr media
*RAMPS poisoness Look Alike
False hellebore (Veratrum) is a highly poisonous plant that can be mistaken for a prized wild edible, the wild leek, or ramp (Allium tricoccum)
Chicken of the Woods
Laetiporus sulphureus. Chicken of the woods is a sulphur-yellow bracket fungus of trees in woods, parks and gardens. They are delicious and are loved by many foragers, Native Americans, and Appalachians alike. The Native Americans taught the early settlers that these were edible and have been a favorite ever since. Chicken of the Woods is most likely to be found from August through October, but it can be found as early as May and up to December depending on where you live.
Tumblr media
*These have a poisoness look alike, Jack O Lantern mushrooms
The Jack-o'-lantern mushroom should not be eaten because it is poisonous to humans. It contains toxic chemicals that can cause severe stomach upset accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea and headache
PawPaws
The Pawpaw Asimina triloba, is well loved by Appalachian locals as a native fruit with a tropical taste. Pawpaw fruit is the largest tree fruit native to the United States, and its custard-like flesh has been said to taste like a combination of banana, pineapple, and Mango. The pawpaw has been used by Native Americans for centuries for both its fruit and its medicinal properties. Many tribes, including the Osage and Sioux, ate the fruit; the Iroquois used the mashed fruit to make small dried cakes to reconstitute later for cooking. PawPaw season is late summer, look for the smell of rotting fruit, eat the ones that are squishy to the touch.
Tumblr media
*They resemble mangos on the trees, many options to eat the ones that are on the floor already as they usually have ripened, but you can also ripen them at home.
Appalachia has a rich and beautiful history filled with magic and delicious food. But the only real way to learn about Appalachia is to visit it. Go and speak with locals, learn about the history, their delicious foods, and powerful Grandma magic, and you too will fall in love with Appalachia.
Thank you for sitting down and having Tea with me on the Other side of the Great Divide

Pope Francis's January 2024 Prayer Intention: For the Gift of Diversity in the Church
O Holy Spirit, who builds the unity of the Church and shows Your infinite creativity through the diversity of charisms, fill the Church with Your gifts according to the marvelous design of God's providence, so that we may learn to appreciate the gifts of others and work together for the good of all, placing those charisms at the service of the community. May diversity among Christians never be a cause of division, but of mutual enrichment, because diversity gives depth and richness to life. Do not allow us to fall into the temptation to consider our gifts as superior to those of others, or ourselves as superior to them. May there be room for all in the Church, and may we grow together in harmony, in faith, and in love, as one body; the Body of Christ. Amen

Noncomprehensive List of Anime companions as Pokemon types
In excitement for Scarlet / Violet I decided to come back to tumblr for the first time in months to make a long ass thread
MASHA - Tokyo Mew Mew
Tumblr media
Steel/ Fairy type - a synthetic Pokemon. R2000 is often nicknamed to be named after its trainers favorite person. Given out initially as a promotion for an idol group, R2000 has continued to be distrubuted as a fan favorite creation. R2000 is a friendly pokemon who often immediately becomes attached to the person who receives it. A second type of R2000 was released when a new lead singer joined the band, but due to the new member of the idol group being far less liked the R3000 is far more rare.
KYUBEY - Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Tumblr media
Psychic / Fairy type - A pokemon from space, despite its cute appearence Kyubey has proven to be a dangerous pokemon who inadventently leads many young trainers to their doom, though usually while trying to stop a larger disaster from happening. As this pokemon is emotionless and doesn’t understand emotions, it isn’t aware of the harm it causes. All Kyubey seem to be a part of a hivemind.
KYUBEY - MAGIA RECORD ( i haven’t finished Magia Record so i’m going to guess based on the portion i have)
Tumblr media
Fairy / Psychic - Some say under the right conditions, a smaller Kyubey called Kyuuwasa often can be found with seemingly weaker psychic powers. While even cuter, it is unclear if Kyuuwasa is any less likely to cause harm then its larger counterpart. Notable a Kyubey shown a Kyuuwasa was found to be confused, so its very unlikely Kyuuwasa is a baby form of Kyubey
KILALA - InuYasha
Tumblr media
Fire type - Kilala is an adorable two tailed pokemon once thought to be a common relative of Eevee and Vulpix, though it is feline and not vulpine. It is said that Kilala are long living and will find trainers who are brave to befriend. Kilala evolves to a much larger pokemon once thought to be legendary.
Tumblr media
Fire / Dark - Kirara the evolved form of Kilala. Capable of learning fly bizarrely. Kirara is even more ready to battle beside it’s beloved trainer, and is capable of amazing flurries of fire attacks. Despite looking scary to those unfamiliar with the species, Kirara retains the friendly nature it had in its previous form.
LUNA/ARTEMIS/DIANA- Sailor Moon
Tumblr media
Normal / Psychic type - The Tsukineko species of cat pokemon are believed to come from the moon, and get along well with Clefairy. The small grey previous evolution, Dianya can evolve to either the New Moon or Full moon form depending on gender. Often found in groups with Clefairy and Minior. If you cover Tsukineko’s moon shaped mark on their forehead, they can no longer use psychic moves.
KON - BLEACH
Tumblr media
Ghost / Normal type - Unlike Banette, the ghost inside the possesed toy that makes the Pokemon known as Con wasn’t there before and has no ill will toward whoever owns or previously owned the toy. Mischevious by nature, Con comes in several toy types, seemingly all coming from a haunted toy factory that closed.
SOOT SPRITES - Spirited Away
Tumblr media
Fairy/Ground - Sootspri are small, numerous Pokemon that live near active fires. They follow Coalossal around in areas where both Pokemon live. Sootspri are never found alone and every Sootspri being trained appear to be in a group of twenty or so. Their favorite food resemble Minior, and Sootspri have been known to bother the meteor pokemon because of this. THey can get very close to fires without being bothered.
PEACH PPGZ
Tumblr media
Electric / Steel - Pooch-O was a toy created recently in tandem with the same company who made R2000 as a toy to be left with very young children and to aid in Kindergartens and primary schools. Pooch-O is peach scented, and can call for help. A popular pokemon with those who grew up alongside one.

Ok so for anyone who has an OC that's underdeveloped and feel bad/ashamed for it let me introduce y'all to my favorite OC.
Tumblr media
This is Orchid. She has light blue hair with purple tips and when I draw her at her normal age (this is a younger version i drew in an attempt to get a handle on what she looked like as a kid) her hair covers her left eye. She has heterochromic eyes where the left eye is blue and right eye is gold (for those who know me from NNT Fandom I made this character long before I'd ever heard of the name Elizabeth Liones) and she has fire powers with au unique quirk of having light blue flames and is the love interest of my most developed OC.
That is the extent of her design and character.
When I made her I literally was just drawing a cool design, thought it looked cute next to my other OC, and decided that was that. And yet, despite having a fully developed character to draw my go to picture is always, always Orchid because despite not having any developed to speak of she's my favorite OC to draw!
I know the internet likes to have full fledged character sheets for OCs but I wanted to let ya'll know that it's okay if you don't really have a story or personality for an OC yet, part of the fun of writing or drawing is building to world and seeing how your character grows and develops and lots of people who work in comics and animation don't even start out with fully fledged character sheets. Yes, you do want the OC to develop as it grows but sometimes your favorite OC can just be based on how fun they are to draw rather than what their backstop is.
So yeah, this is my favorite OC, she doesn't have a character yet, but I love her.

Protection Against Malignant Spirits
Malignant Spirits are characterized by many names and many forms. We have the agitated souls of the dead, spirit, ghost, poltergeist hauntings. Then we have the Demons and Spiritual Parasites. The ones who for lack of a better term want to cause us harm in the spiritual plane by tainting your life force.
Tumblr media
Ignorance Is Bliss
The first step in protecting yourself from these entities is to ignore them, this has been a method that has worked for thousands of years. Spirits not unlike humans, enjoy conversation and love to instigate contact if they believe you may have the sight. So if nothing truly horrid has happened except a few things have gone missing , or the periodic jump scares out of the corner of your eye then attempt to ignore them. Don't look them in the eye, don't speak to them, don't acknowledge their existence. And more often then not they will leave of their own accord because you aren't any fun.
The Cleaner The Better
The Second Step if the first action has proven not to remedy the situation is a basic cleansing of the energy using incense or sanctified water. This will take care of most minor spirits who hold no real attachment to the physical space they inhabit.
WHOSE THAT POKEMON
However if this method does not work it is time to get into identifying the type of spirit.
A Death Loop: these are the traumatic events which lead to a person's demise, usually violent ; strange noises, full conversations from thin air, visions of death , smells and tastes of foods you've never eaten flooding your mouth.
Fragments or Spirits: A Piece of the soul left behind after death, usually rather weak, they don't know that they have died or most of the time they dont have the brain capacity to understand. It's a small part of the person they used to be
Ghosts: these are the full soul of the person on the material plane , their death was so violent or sudden that their soul just; POPPED right out of their body and they usually stay in the same place that they died , can cause minor things like electrical to go haywire, objects disappearing, whispering, death loops, dreams filled with dread, usual haunting stuff annoying for sure but not lethal
To Remove Spirits Of This Calibre You May Do So With A Basic Banishment Spell linked Her (LINKED SPELL CAUSE YE)
Anything BEFORE This Point Can Be Dealt With Alone And Without Professional Help
However Everything AFTER You Need Multiple People, A Team To Begin The Process OF Removing , Doing This Alone Could Lead To Your Untimely “ACCIDENTAL” Demise
Running Is An Option
Poltergeist: these are the types of spirits in which the movies are based off of , these are an amalgamation of several spirits usually violent deaths in an area, sites of massacres as well as sites of great trauma have the ability to create a poltergeist. These types of spirits can and will harm you if given the opportunity. Signs of a Poltergeist Include, Rust showing up in places where humidity is low, objects disappearing after they have been placed down, doors slamming shut, smells and odors like rotting eggs and meats. If left unchecked you will begin to experience possible possession.
“Demons” or Spiritual Parasites: These are the strongest of the malignant spirits outside of the Great 72, they will cause nightmares in which your entire family is killed, they will find your secrets and whisper the most vile things in your ears, they want you scared and they want you weak so that they can overtake your very being, you will begin to see an increase in nosebleeds, bloodshot eyes, an uptake in addiction to substances, a disregard for your own safety and the safety of others, self harm and black outs of time in which you don't act as yourself. They find those who already suffer with mental illness and exacerbate the symptoms until it leads to the death of the individual.
TO RID AN AREA OF THESE TYPES OF MALIGNANT SPIRITS YOU HAVE ONE OF TWO OPTION EXORCISMS AND BINDING THE SPIRIT TO AN OBJECT
The Exorcism while practiced primarily by the Catholic Faith is easy enough to do as a Magickal Practitioner so long as you have a group of 6 or more, I will link the spell here (The Exorcism Spell)
This next bit is a binding spell and is usually how you get things like possessed dolls in the first place but if done properly and disposed of well will make it so that you don't have to deal with the malignant entity for the rest of your days . Again this should only be attempted by a group of 6 or more people.
Binding Spirit to an object Linked Here(Link the BInding Spell at a later date because i can't for the life of me find the grimoire with it )
Thank you for being here with me and having tea with me on the other side of the Great Divide :)

Codex entry: Shade
"It has often been suggested that the only way for a demon to affect the world of the living is by possessing a living (or once living) body, but this is not always true. Indeed, a shade is one such creature: a demon in its true form that has adapted to affect the world around it.
My hypothesis is this: we already know that many demons become confused when they pass through the Veil into our world. They are unable to tell the living from the dead, the very static nature of our universe being confusing to a creature that is accustomed to a physicality defined entirely by emotion and memory. Most demons seek to immediately seize upon anything they perceive as life, jealously attempting to possess it—but what of those that do not? What of those that encounter no life, or fail to possess a body? What of those that are more cautious by their nature?
These demons watch. They lurk. They envy.
In time, such a demon will learn to drain energy from the psyche of those it encounters, just as it did in the Fade. Once it has drained enough, it has the power to manifest and will forever after be known as a shade. Such a creature spurns possession. It instead floats as a shadow across its piece of land, preying upon the psyche of any who cross its path. Perhaps it believes itself still in the Fade? There is evidence to believe that is so.
A shade will weaken the living by its very proximity. If it focuses its will, it can drain a single target very quickly. Some have even been known to assault the minds of a living victim, causing confusion or horror and making the target ripe for the kill. The tragedy of a shade is perhaps that, once it has drained a target whole, its appetite is only heightened rather than slaked."
—From the journal of former Senior Enchanter Maleus, once of the Circle of Rivain, declared apostate in 9:20 Dragon Age.

I have made a realisation.
Elysia and Madoka are compatible.
Madoka is Yuri God, the Mother.
Elysia is Yuri Jesus, the Daughter.
We just need a Pink Lesbian ghost girl now to complete Yuri Christianity, since we already have Homura as Yuri Satan.
