Witchin’ 101: Basics
A lot of baby witches, especially when getting into the craft are overwhelmed by the amount of knowledge they need or want to absorb and practice in their craft. And back then I used to feel the same. But not anymore, this is the ultimate guide you need in starting out as a witch.
In simple terms, witchcraft is the craft that is used to manipulate natural energies around us. Whether that may be banishing, protecting, attracting, or producing. Witchcraft in itself is a powerful craft that anyone can do. However, what can you do to start your own craft?
Research thoroughly on any subject of witchcraft that interests you. = This can be the simple things like cleansing or protection. It’s always required and advisable to research information and indulge in it to further lengthen your knowledge in the craft.
Take the information with a grain of salt, always. = And I mean this in the metaphorical sense. Of course you’re very much welcome to use literal salt but it’s up to you. Because taking every info you come across as a fact is absolutely horrendous. Some of these information may be a hoax or something truly advanced for new witches that they may not be able to handle it in their level. What works for them may not work for you because witchcraft is unique for every individual. And if you do think certain information is trustworthy, then it must be so. But never forget to experiment in your craft to see what works for you and what doesn’t.
Keep a notebook or anything to write down information you come across, practices you do, anything. = This comes in handy so much even if you’re an advanced witch. It’s good to write down what you come across because the information will be of use to you in the future. Recipes, rituals, anything you find in your craft, you must write.
Practice daily, do small meditations, protect, cleanse, whatsoever! = practicing your craft daily may be a difficult task for some baby witches but trust me on this one when I say that even doing the simplest forms of magic helps. And cleansing, protecting, and warding your space and/or your person has such a pure and powerful thing to me. It means so much to me and is such a beautiful thing to do. So make sure to practice as often as you can.
You don't actually need to have the items that's being asked of you. = as new witches, you're most likely exposed to seeing advanced witches having tons and tons of equipment and materials, tools and trinkets. Please don't take this as a sign to go and impulse buy multiple items all at once or constantly. Remind you that these advanced witches in their early days were new and only have very few items or none at all. Manipulating the energies around you, you don't require tools and herbs and crystals. Surely they are useful and help you in so many ways, but start small, you got this.
Be organised. = THIS IS MY GOLDEN RULE !!! In my humble opinion, this is completely an option yes but who doesn't like a clean space? Clean spaces can immediately cleanse your spirit and your mind and your atmosphere but not completely of course, however it helps a lot. Cleaning out your room, organising your notes on your physical or digital notebook, having a neat, well thought out spread is a nice addition and welcomes positive energy in my craft.
Make sure to have fun and love what you do my fellow witches! You're an absolute bright light of energy. I love you !!

My House Rules for Spirit Guests and Companions
Hey everyone! This is just a list of my house rules, as inspired by @spiritvexer. If you have any other ideas, just let me know! I am probably missing a few, honestly.
No spirit may enter any room of my other family members. The living room, kitchen, and my room are fine, but bedrooms are not. This includes the bedroom in the basement. Bathrooms are off limits unless I say it is alright. In other words, unless you have express permission, the answer is no, you cannot go into their room. I have a lot of younger siblings, and I am afraid they would be... startled by the presence of a spirit.
All welcome spirits have a right to my room, my altar, and my closet. It is spacious enough for you to chill in, if you want to. I also have individual spirit vessels that are solely yours, and cannot be shared. If you want a different one, would like to trade, etc, just let me know. I will work it out for you.
When I work with other spirits, do not interrupt either of us. We will all have one on one time together, so don’t worry. I will definitely allow you to mingle and speak to one another, so just wait a few minutes until I am finished speaking with them.
If you have a problem with another spirit, tell me. I can’t fix it if I don’t know what’s wrong. If they are being difficult, malevolent, or dangerous, I need to know right away. Please do not hesitate to come to me about it.
You have a right to energy. If you need some, ask me for it. I will either lend you some of my own, help you find a good source, or place charged objects in your vessel.
You may travel with me if you like. I don’t go many places, but where I do go, you are welcome to go as well. The only place I would not like to be followed is the bathroom.
If my home or self is attacked, if someone else is attacked, or if one of you is attacked, we as a family have the responsibility to protect one another. Do everything in your power to tell me what is going on, and try your hardest to protect the object of the attack. Especially spiritual attacks. If helping would seriously endanger you, please just tell me instead.
You may have non-malevolent entities in my room. If even for a second you doubt their intentions are harmless, then they may not come in. Do not share my secrets and my protection systems with anyone, spirit or otherwise.
You may communicate with other people, especially witches, diviners, etc. The only things I ask are that you do not leave me without telling me, or explaining why you are going to someone else’s home for however long you are going/staying, and do not share any information I have not shared with them.
When I do a cleansing, stay in your vessels. I will pass over them, and you will not be caught up and swept away. You may leave the house if you like, but remember that I have to welcome you back in to have you again. I will do divination three hours after a cleansing to make sure everyone is accounted for.
I will divine with you personally once a week, or as a group twice a week. If you ever need me before then, get my attention in some way, and I can try to speak with you asap.
Do not attack me, my family, or my friends that are welcomed into my home. If they cross the threshold without permission, then they are not under my protection.

Diagnosis Review
I got a Diagnosis Reading from @spiritvexer. They suggested I do so because I have been having a difficult time lately balancing the worlds, physical and metaphysical.
Starting off was a challenge because I forgot to let her in at first and she couldn’t find my energy past my wards. ^-^; Whoops.
Once she entered through the space I offered, I could feel her reading me. It isn’t a common thing, from what I’ve heard, to be able to feel someone’s energy when they are divining, but some can, and I am one. I love Thicket’s energy. It’s so light and lovely. Calming and sweet.
As non-invasive as possible she observes my energy points and tells me how she sees them. Each made sense given my current life situations. She told me where I was strong and where there was reason for concern. We even chatted with The Universe for a bit. The Universe gave me an amazing hug and I cried.
After she left we talked about the problem areas, and I asked for suggestions on how to cure them myself. She gave me proper advice that made sense, and was accommodating to my resources.
My reading was last night and I started with her advice this morning and I’m already noting a difference. A small difference, but a step in the right direction, a positive change.
Thank you so much, Thicket for your help and your amazing skill. <3
10/10 would recommend.

Astral Masterpost
I realized my old Astral Masterpost from my previous blog SpiritConnect is very out-of-date and broken, so here's a newly updated version of it!
As always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
Tumblr media
What is the astral?
The astral is, to put it simply, any other realm than our own. It's an immense place, full of an infinite amount of realms, worlds, and even universes- each one unique from the next.
We don't interact with the astral physically- instead, some people may metaphysically visit the astral, and/or work with the inhabitants of the other worlds (who commonly appear to us as spirits or entities outside of their home realm).
How does someone visit the astral? How do you visit the astral?
There are dozens and dozens, if not hundreds of ways to reach the astral, as it just relies on altering your state of consciousness. Some people access it through visualization exercises (my favorite listed below), meditation, dreaming, drug use, trance work, spirits, and even moving in specific ways! It's extremely helpful to experiment with different methods, as they can work differently for different people.
My favorite method of astral travel is a bit different than what some others may do, as I focus on myself moving in an internal manner instead of external as I struggle with the idea of 'leaving' my body. I normally do it while laying down in a dark room, and visualizing myself shrinking and moving inward on myself, and ending up in a dark cave with a giant lake inside. I let myself slowly walk into the lake and sink down to the bottom. After a few minutes, I reach an 'exit tunnel' of sorts that I use to transition from my brain to the astral.

[Witch Tip: Astral Travel] by @moonofthemagpie (deactivated)
[Astralling with ADHD, or How to Astral When You Can't Meditate] by @aktober
Why would someone visit the astral? Is it dangerous?
Honestly, the reasons someone would visit the astral are virtually endless! With the sheer number of realms, many with different rules and different psychics, there's not too much of a limit to what can be done.
For example, some people go to create their own areas, explore new worlds and lands, meet new spirits, even fly or shapeshift! Personally, I do it to interact with my Gods in a close manner and work alongside their spirits.
Of course, dangers do exist in the astral, as they do anywhere. Not every spirit is going to have your best in mind, and not every realm is going to be hospitable. It's always a good idea to set up wards before attempting to astral travel, and have an exit strategy in mind just in case.

I just kept remembering @witches-ofcolor's post about printing out your witch books as I went searching for @recoil-operated's $12 mead post, because for a post that had been so ubiquitous, I was struggling to find a single copy of it, and yeah, what wouldn't I pay to have a copy of it in a binder somewhere? Printing can get pretty expensive, but my library sells printing services for ten cents a page, and that's more than what having certain resources on hand is worth.
So now I have my pagan-accessory posts in a file folder ready to print, mainly the ones I keep for recipes, including the mead post, @gallusrostromegalus's Jesus tea post, @a-magpie-witchling's Yeye posts (may she rest peacefully), @dua-yinepu's Egyptian Beer post and the pie recipe I was FINALLY ABLE TO SOURCE after years of looking unsuccessfully.
If anyone has a reblog copy of either the preserved lemons in honey post or the spiritvexer FUBAR list post and is willing to send a url my way, I would deeply appreciate it. It's hard to find a post with either a deactivated blog or no remembered text, but I've found that, with google, "any literal quote" site:www.tumblr.com -tagging can find most posts, but not all of them. Shoddy memory disease makes a fool of me yet ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
Blessings!✨

Hey, how are you doing? I just found an ask post where you said something about psychic spaces and that amazed me out. However I tried to google to find more resources and articles but didn't find anything. Do you have any so I can have a deeper study and understanding of psychic spaces?
Hi there!  I’m doing well, taking a day to interact with social media since I just finished up a large event for my shop!  I don’t log into Tumblr often so I’m sorry if this response is very late, but I’m very happy to talk about psychic spaces!
I’m not sure if I can remember the exact post you’re talking about (Tumblr search is not very hepful), but I believe you’re talking about personal astral spaces.  Some other key words for this might be astral temple, astral space, pocket realm... there’s quite a few ways it can be described!  Essentially, these spaces are internal locations somewhere in the astral that are yours alone.  They’re a place you can retreat to when you need it, or where you can do your spirit work safely.  It should be a place that reflects you internally or your personal aesthetic - somewhere that makes you feel protected and happy.
My personal work would actually be so incomplete without my own astral space, which takes the form of a large treehouse, containing a library and several rooms for spirit guests to stay.  This is where I hang out with my spirit family, where I have private conversations with them, and where I perform a good deal of my professional spirit work vetting.
I really recommend these two posts by the now-defunct blog @/spiritvexer , which may have been some of the most informative posts to me when beginning this journey:
Creation of the Astral Temple, or Visiting Your Personal Astral Space
Why You Need to Ward Your Inner Spaces
Depending on the contents of your past life or your spiritual abilities as a child, you may already have an astral space that you’re connected to.  I recommend making attempts to travel “inside” yourself, rather than externally - sometimes this is as simple as opening a door in your mind.  You may be surprised what you find there!
If you’re generally unfamiliar with astral travel, which I’m sure would make all of this seem perplexing and unfamiliar, I recommend reading through @/spiritconnect’s Astral Travel Masterpost, and then taking a look at @/duskenpath’s Resource Page!

Heyo I gotta question for you so how do I connect to the spirit in my sword I bought at Austin witch fest and if there isn't a spirit could I make it a home for a spirit in need of a home? Like a spirit companion? As always please and thank you.✨
OOH OOH YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE? DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE? You have a SCRYING MIRROR!
I mean, I think. Unless it’s like a rapier or something. But if the blade is wide enough and shiny enough for a reflection, you have DEFINITELY got yourself a scrying mirror, and you can use the sword to communicate with the sword.
Get yourself a dark room and some dim lights. Maybe candles, maybe one of those LED fake-neon-lights, maybe your phone screen. Whatever. Dark room; dim light. Your sword won’t reflect perfectly because it’s not a mirror, but it is reflective, which will work great for scrying. You ever looked at one of those like mosaic-mirror-ball things they have in the garden section of the store? Where you can kinda see a reflection but it’s all warped and funky and almost defies being looked at directly, and your eyes kinda go past it or into it instead? That’s what you want. Scrying is a great way to connect with spirits, though it will probably take quite a bit of practice.
As for making it a home for a spirit, yes you could, but for that you’d need someone more experienced in spirit work than me. I would direct you to spiritvexer here on Tumblr, but they’ve been gone from the site for a while. If you ever see one of their posts floating around in reblog-land, check it out, but there’s unfortunately not a whole blog to link to anymore.
tbh I just spent a RIDICULOUS amount of time going through my Following list, and any of the big Spirit Workers (who actively post about spirit work often) seem to have vacated. So I don’t directly have anyone to point you to, sorry!
If any followers know of any good Spirit Workers, drop their url in the replies, please?

WHY THE 4d IS A MAP TO YOUR 3D
We have all heard to stop trying to change the 3D and I know you’re getting tired of hearing it but it’s so important. The 3D is nothing more than a reflection of your current and past thoughts. That’s it. It has no external or physical power over and you shouldn’t let it have any either way. The 3d, created by your thoughts and beliefs, reflects the 4d. The only way to change the 3D is to change your thoughts.
Think of it like this. The 3D is a movie you’ve seen a million times before but you never understand the ending unless you decide to look it up and realize the one detail given that makes the whole plot wrap up nicely. That one detail is the change in your thoughts. The 3D will always conform to the 4d and the 4d will always spoil the 3D. If you want to know how your story ends, change the way you think about the story (aka get rid of the old story and commit to the new one) and watch the movie be spoiled for you!

Post for beginners!
I’ve gotten a couple of asks lately from people who are interested in starting witchcraft, so I thought this would be a good time to post a little beginner’s post of things to keep in mind and learn about when you’re just starting out!
Most of the advice here will be in link form, as in it will be other witch’s advice that I think is good advice to recommend, but some of it will be my own views!
Here are some good beginner witch tips from @will-o-the-witch!
and here is a really well thought out and well written FAQ for beginner witches written by @sylvaetria
Here (one, two, three, and four) are some good things to keep in mind when you’re starting your craft, by @deathbydevilsweed, @alocalfemme, @lavenderhoneycakes (whose blog appears to have been deleted, so i’m linking from a witch i follow myself), and @deerhoofandrabbitsfoot
Here is a useful pdf book of correspondences that i personally think is an excellent starting point for learning about them, edit posted by @sigil-trove
Here’s a useful post about how to respond if you’re doing magic and get overwhelmed suddenly, written by @windvexer whose blog also appears to be down now.
Here is a post about what to do if you’re feeling magically exhausted, written by @spiritvexer who seems to have left tumblr as well.
Here is a post about how to write a spell by @irisedwhisperer
and here is a post that might futher help you understand spell writing and spell casting by @hellboundwitch!
and some personal tips from me -
☆ there is a lot out there that is real, and a lot out there that is not. i have found it greatly helpful to look towards more experienced and knowledgeable witches when trying to determine for yourself which is which.
☆ learn protective and cleansing magic first. make sure you have a good feel for it before you move on to anything else.
☆ if something feels wrong, trust your guts. if you’re reading a spell or collecting a new crystal or meeting a new person or going to a new place or talking with a new spirit and something feels like it isn’t right, or something is just making you nervous about it, abort mission. politely extricate yourself from the situation if you have to and finish and close down whatever workings you’re working if you’re in the middle of something, but just get outta there. it doesn’t honestly matter how innocuous it seems on the surface, if your senses are telling you that something is off, something is off. especially with magic, this means this is something you shouldn’t engage with.
☆ don’t do magic on someone without their knowledge or consent. this extends to all variations of magic, but especially especially when it comes to kitchen magic. you could seriously hurt someone, or even put them in the hospital, if you give them something to eat or drink that they don’t know about. food allergies and sensitivities be that way. but beyond that, you should never interfere with someone else’s life with a magical influence if they haven’t told you they’re okay with it, it’s just the wrong thing to do. the same way you shouldn’t arrange something in someone else’s life without them knowing about it with their partner or boss, it’s just not right to do that, even if you THINK you’re helping them.
☆ this is a widely contentious subject and i don’t claim to speak for anyone but myself here, but please take cursing seriously. it is very very grim work, and i personally don’t advocate for it. many many people disagree with me, and i am no one to tell others what to do or how to feel about it, but in my view you should at the very least understand how very, very serious it is to lay a curse on someone- it should not be taken lightly.
☆ please please please study any herbs, essential oils, or crystals you want to work with BEFORE using them! some herbs interact badly with medications or medical conditions. some essential oils can burn your skin or cause a rash. some crystals deteriorate in water or leech toxins in water or deteriorate in sunlight! for the sake of safety, you have gotta intimately know what you’re working with before you actually work with it.

How do vex spirits? -@lazywitchling :)
Say to them something so intensely bizarre that they are booted from physical reality by the force of sheer confusion.
If we are about my old username spiritvexer, it was based on my first username windvexer.
If we are about my username windvexer, it's an incredibly obscure futurama reference (s3 ep13).

Spirit Work: Do You Qualify?
I keep seeing people approach spirit work like it’s no big deal. They’re drawn to it through companionship, demonology, angels, contact with the dead, faerie craft, tulpamancy, servitors, thoughtforms, deity worship, etc. There’s a lot that can fall beneath spirit work or be related to it in some form where people eventually end up looking at spirit work eventually.
What is spirit work?
Spirit work is the act of working with and communicating with spirits. Spirits can range in variety from fae, mermaids, demons, angels, dragons, etc. Then there’s subspecies of whatever species you may be able to come up with off the top of your head. They can be malicious or benign, humanoid or inhumane, lifelong presence in your life or a passing existence. They can be immortal, deities, sexual or nonsexual, weak and strong. Spirits are so diverse, it’s hard to label them all as a whole because of how many different species there are and societies with their own politics and way of life. They’re incorporeal and can be found around you or in the astral, some even within your dreams. They are as real as you and me. Generally, you want to be respectful and not treat them like Pokémon to be tamed. They are wild and free. This doesn’t mean you should let them walk all over you especially when they become a negative influence in your life.
Do you need to do spirit work?
Even if a lot of the craft comes back to spirit work in some shape or form, you DO NOT have to get into spirit work. When you get into spirit work, it’s like opening a door that’s near impossible to close once opened. You invite one spirit into your life, twenty more will come knocking on your door. It’s perfectly possible to cohabitate with a spirit and you not even know it was there. Especially if you’re not looking for them or actively working with spirits to learn to recognize its presence. Like any other skill, there are pros and cons to spirit work. It can be rewarding just as much as it can be dangerous. It’s very dependent on you and what you plan to do while exploring spirit work. Just because they are generally incorporeal doesn’t mean you’re invincible or immune to the consequences that come with working with spirits. You’re not a god and so long as you exercise caution, spirit work can be a great skill to have. If you choose not to get into spirit work, then awesome! Your path isn’t any less than anyone else’s just because you decide this line of work is not for you.
Discernment
Before you run off into the magical land of spirits, you need to be sure that what you see or experience is real. This is the single most important tool anyone can have and that is to be skeptical, to exercise critical thinking, and test it. While it’s nice to take people at their word, you should be questioning their information and confirm it with other sources and/or with personal experience. Research and understand what it is you want to get into and what it is you’re trying to interact with. Spirits can be tricky beings and lie or change their form to appear as other things. They will try to scam you for offerings or even mess with you because they’re bored and think it’s funny. Not every spirit is going to be like this yet it happens. And being able to discern between the lies and what you deem as real will be essential in your interactions with spirits.

Discernment Pro Tips (thetwistedrope)
Divination
You want some form of physical communication with spirits that’s beyond only using telepathy or what you think you heard. Two or three different forms of divination would be ideal to check your results against and even confirm. Personally, I like to check and double check for personal assurance. I use tarot/oracle as my main form of divination and check if what I’m interpreting is correct with my pendulum. I use this a lot to confirm that what I’ve experienced happened and to gauge a spirit’s wants or needs.

Protection
How adept are you with protection? This is personal protection, wards of a space, more wards to prevent lying, glamor, teleportation, etc. Finding just the right amount of protection because there is such a thing as too much. Protection is a huge part of what you want to have around you to avoid a lot of potentially large problems before they can become one. There are preventative measure for a reason. There’s loopholes you want to avoid in the making of your wards like ‘only beings with positive intentions can come through’ or using only light as protection. The problem with the first notion is that it’s too open. A spirit with the intention to ‘fix’ you can be considered positive because this being has the intention for the highest good for you by its standards may not be the highest good by your standards. That’s a very weak premise to build a ward. The problem with the latter is that it won’t stop a being of light from just walking right through your ward. Again, it’s weak. Wards can be tricky business. The best way to build them is to write them out on paper and then try to find a way around them to break your own wards.
Banishment
If you’re going to be interacting with spirits, you want a way to banish them if they break your rules or become volatile. Why would you interact with a spirit you can’t get rid of? It’d be pretty asinine to willingly come into contact with a spirit you can’t banish and then have that spirit refuse to leave. How can you get it to stop escalating and becoming a worse situation? You want different methods of banishment as well from energetic intent to physical means of banishment. You want tailored banishment methods for the spirits you plan to contact. If you don’t know how to banish a spirit, then you probably shouldn’t be looking to interact with them.

Cleansing
Spirits can leave behind residue that can attract parasites. They can bring parasites. What you’re doing can attract more spirits or more parasites. It’s a good habit to get into to cleanse a space before and after interacting with spirits. It keeps you energetically clean as well as your space.
Energy Work
I’ve heard of people weak at sensing energies being able to do spirit work. It can be very hit and miss. Energy work is what you use to be able to sense a spirit and identify them. Personally, I recommend you have some basis in energy work before getting into spirit work. It’s an invaluable skill that’d provide an extra form of protection and open up new avenues of interacting with spirits. It’d help to learn what a spirit feels like, their energy signature, and alignments to better be able to single them out.

Astral Travel
This is a skill that’s more optional yet I always recommend having it in your skillset if you wish to get into spirit work. A lot of what you learn when getting into astral travel overlaps with spirit work since you’re opening yourself up to traveling into different realms that may have spirits. Much like spirit work, you’re opening a door that’s near impossible to close once opened. Astral travel provides you with a space you can work in, to be able to travel to a spirit’s homeland, observe their way of life, direct interaction, and being able to ‘see’ what the spirit may look like.

Like I’ve touched on throughout this post, there are dangers to spirit work. You’re opening yourself up to spirits and allowing yourself to interact with them. You don’t know this spirit and they likely don’t know you. They can and will mess with you if it strikes their fancy. Spirits can hurt you in creative ways, pose as a deity, pretend to be from your past life, abuse you and use you. Spirit’s personalities and motivations are as diverse as interacting with people around you. You can’t predict how a spirit will act nor how things will unfold between you by beginning interactions. All you can do is take the precautions to protect yourself, your space, and those that matter to you the best ways you can. Be cautious and don’t put yourself in unnecessary danger just because you decided to see what happens. If you go out looking for danger, you’ll find it.

I hope this post has been helpful. I’ve seen different answers to this question of what you should or shouldn’t know when stepping into spirit work. I was never satisfied with the answers I’ve seen and often disagree with them. I hope that this post puts it into perspective what you should know if you so choose to get into spirit work. Better to go into it informed than to lack a basic skill because you were overzealous and ran ahead before you were ready.
