ROUND 1C, MATCH 5 OUT OF 8!

Propaganda Under the Cut:
Shan:
shan is sent to kill the developer of an ecosystem threatening company but falls in love w him instead. cute and silly <3
Madison:
This is a very close parallel to the Little Mermaid tale. Madison saves Tom Hanks's character (Allen) from drowning - twice! Both times, he's not sure if he's imagined the tail or not. But Madison is determined. She lets her tail dry out which means it turns into legs and wanders (naked) through New York trying to find him. Eventually, she does, and he takes her in, a bit bemused by her odd quirks. They fall in love. But the problem is that her legs revert to a tail whenever they get wet. And there are other people who have seen her as a mermaid. One guy is pretty persistent and, when the two MCs are at a high profile event, with cameras trained on them, he throws water at her. She's revealed and taken away to be tested. He saves her, of course. If I remember right, he goes into the ocean with her at the end. I think it might be implied that he stays with her, which is a pretty cool twist on the tale. I also love the fact that this is basically The Little Mermaid in modern times. What would happen if you're a temporary mermaid in the age of cameras and media (though not social media, as this is in the 80s). Still, the implication of the revelation travelling far and wide is interesting. Do people pass it off as a hoax? Or do people start trying to find mermaids in the oceans? Are there more mermaids (because I don't remember there ever being another one in the film)?

Splash (1984) starring Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks 🧜🏻‍♀️💙
This is my favorite mermaid movie of all time it's just so effortlessly romantic and funny and I love the chemistry between Madison and Allen so much.

what's a problematic, probably didn't age well but movie you love to the moon and back? mine is 100% splash. i found it on tv as a kid and it started my mermaid obsession. in fact, h2o started airing not too long after. tom hanks, john candy and daryl hannah all in one movie. and a cheesy song at the end (which is apparently really about divorce?!) what's not to love?

Note
I mean practical effect mermaid/merman tails, using costumes instead of CGI, are pretty common and fairly convincing, such as Barnaby from Sabrina Down Under or Zac from Mako Mermaids, in Ronno's case the only consideration would be the actor being able to safely stand up and hop around in it, and it being durable enough to withstand hopping on different surfaces.
Agreed. My apologies, by “special effects” I meant both practical (costume)& CGI effects. Also don’t forget the ladies’ tail costumes too 🧜‍♀️ 😉!

There’s hundreds more examples , but I’d be here all night trying to list them all.

ROUND 2C, MATCH 3 OUT OF 4!

Propaganda Under the Cut:
Su-a-Heo:
Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid is set in Joseon (Korea) during the Japanese occupation. Su-a is very sweet and determined. She becomes mute due to having lye poured down her throat to kill her after accidentally overhearing a conversation between the resistance fighters. She eventually joins them, having witnessed firsthand the impact of the Japanese colonization. Even though she's in over her head at first she proves to be reliable and effective despite not knowing how to write or read at first.
Madison:
This is a very close parallel to the Little Mermaid tale. Madison saves Tom Hanks's character (Allen) from drowning - twice! Both times, he's not sure if he's imagined the tail or not. But Madison is determined. She lets her tail dry out which means it turns into legs and wanders (naked) through New York trying to find him. ok so i'm watching the movie Splash (1984, starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah) again for the first time in the long time and i have fucking words.
spoilers if anyone cares??
but when the crazy scientist man exposes Madison in front of everyone and Allen just fucking lays there, shocked, i am SO MAD.
i'm sorry, but if i was in Allen's situation, i wouldn't have fucking hesitated to try and grab her and get her the hell out of there. there's time to be shocked later, that is the woman you LOVE you absolute NINNY.
fucking idiot
i hate straight people
and all the bad people are suddenly the ones using their fucking HEARTS with how all of this is going??? the brother that spends his time looking up women's skirts and the scientist who spends his time abusing everyone around him. they're the ones that fucking give a shit.
i hate this movie.
and yes, i know the whole "oh shit i gotta save her" and whatever happens. i know. but girl, he ain't fuckin worth it. he really ain't.
