early seasons spn is just so.
foggy cinematography, exorcising not killing demons ("you're supposed to help people but why didn't you help me?"), guilt, researched christian lore, sam's demonic powers (boy king of hell sam winchester is such a missed opportunity), horror road movie style, things actually trying to be scary, the power of angels ("i draggedd you out of hell i can throw you back in"), looking for god while he was there the whole time ("cruel, capricious god"), inventing free will, crowley being actually scary, lucifer being a threat and not some annoyed child, the way plot tied up...

waiting for the day someone asks me why supernatural is my favorite show just to tell them, "no supernatural isn't even in my top 3 lmao" and they'd be very confused by this, "but but you talk about dean winchester all the time! you wrote a paper about the ramifications of queer coding in pop culture (headed by destiel) for a Big Thing at school! you just cosplayed castiel last week after finding a tan coat at a thrift store! what do you mean supernatural isn't your favorite show?"
then i hit them with the, "supernatural was a fever dream a witch's cauldron it was the saddest accident to ever happen to me and it gave me good characters trapped in a bad narrative. dean winchester is one of my favorite characters because he was flawed and human and full of love and the show, which created him, did him so wrong."

@winchestergifs 5k followers celebration day #6: underrated / monsters: Women in White
See, when they were alive, their husbands were unfaithful to them. And these women, basically suffering from temporary insanity, murdered their children. Then once they realized what they had done, they took their own lives. So now their spirits are cursed, walking back roads, waterways.

can i just say. why is every shot of 7x01 so dark and low saturated 😭 especially chris's room, madney's house, the locker room... and it's not just a narrative device because only chris's scene was sad. one thing i always loved about 911 is how bright and warm it looks so i hope this won't stick for the rest of the season

the thing about supernatural is that i might be delusional about everything EXCEPT for when i say that the cinematography of the first 3 seasons is incredible, because even back when i thought i was never going to watch the show, it pissed me off that the gifs and clips were so beautiful to look at

the Winchesters COLOR & TONE analysis from the pilot
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PART 2: THE 70s
The blurry lenses and the amber filter make the show look like a flashback and they mark a stark contrast with the early seasons of SPN, which had a cold tone, dark and horror. Here instead it's golden, warm and it makes demons less scary and the show more light and oriented to a younger audience.
The color of SPN changed from cold to warm throughout the show. We always praise the cold grayish color tone of the first seasons but colors are linked to emotions and that's when the brothers were most alone. The color tone of the show slowly started to get warmer (i think more visibly around S7?) after Castiel was introduced and as they learned to build more solid ties with their found family and love. The warmth in the color has a point cause it represents the warmth in their lives.
If we consider it like that, it makes sense that the Winchesters starts bright and warm and golden: it's a story in reverse, the characters are not alone, they're a group of scoobies, they're still naive and genuine (see: John) and haven't been toughened yet.
This John still hasn't turned into the John we all know, so even if he's already experiencing trauma from war, that still hasn't changed him. He's dealing with it but he's still a kind empathetic person (see how he conforted Latika). His will probably be more of a gradual descent, and the ptsd he's already experiencing will probably hit him later on a darker level.
If I'm right, as the story progresses, maybe the angels will mess with the "idyllic" lightheartedness of the characters, tainting this story to break them, creating the grittiness from which Sam & Dean can be born to become the heroes the earth needs.
As that happens, and also John goes deeper into his downfall, i think the show's color & tone will darken and get more horror to match the one of SPN's first season, closing the circle.

Can we talk about how good spn cinematography used to be? We were getting actual good establishing and tracking shots, something rarely seen later on. Also where did all the fog go? Most sets used to be so delightfully misty and dimly lit. The lighting in general was amazing, yes give me lights shining through blinds or visual contrast symbolism. Also it’s a shame that they dropped the muted color palette for an oversaturated, bright mess. I’ll take the grungy look of s1-6 over the sitcom looking late spn, but we can’t ever have nice things with this show.
