anyway i think when cas comes back from the empty, dean and cas have to work through a lot of things and it's just. rocky and sad and stupid. and when they're going to bed every night, cas grabs dean's arms and holds them around himself and says "don't let go." and dean says "I won't. I'm not going to let go." and cas says, "when I close my eyes, you can't let go. you can't let go. I will forget if you let go." and dean just closes his eyes because he's scared and sad and he's cRYING and he presses his forehead to the back of cas' neck and breathes and he can't say anything because of he tries to he'll break and cas will not want to sleep and he'll get worse in the morning and that's not good at all so he just sort of tightens his arms around cas and presses close, waits counting breaths until cas is sleeping and his fingers have stopped digging into his forearms and then he sighs. and nudges his body as close as it'll get to cas because he doesn't wanna dislodge himself in his sleep. and then he drifts off, slow and somehow easy, to the rhythm of Cas' breathing. and yeah. he doesn't let go.

My favorite type of headcanons are the ones you can’t technically prove are wrong, especially the more ridiculous ones like you can’t tell me Sam didn’t keep an iguana in the impala for two weeks as a kid before John found it

How do you think the Winchester dynamic would change if they had another sibling that was the youngest? I’m particularly curious how you think Sam would treat them and stuff!
Thanks for the ask anon!
I'm the oldest with only one younger sibling, so I don't have much experience with three kids/middle child dynamic. The idea of Sam suffering from that "overlooked middle child" trope breaks my heart for him, but he seems to be the type who doesn't mind avoiding the spotlight, so I'm not sure he'd really mind. I think if they had a youngest sibling who was a different gender than them, he wouldn't suffer from that as much since he'd still be considered the youngest boy. But either way, I don't really think it would affect how Sam treats them.
I think both brothers would be very "no one's allowed to pick on my sibling but me" attitude, and both would be very protective over a younger sibling. There would be a lot of teasing, but also a lot of love, too. I think if their youngest sibling was very fem, they'd be even more protective since a lot of hunters (and the world at large) unfortunately can be a bit sexist and disrespectful, especially of fem hunters.
As far as how the dynamic between the two of them would change, I think Dean would obviously still be protective over Sam as well, but would have less of a "Sammy is baby" mentality and delegate some of the protect the youngest tasks to him. I feel like Dean would be aware of the forgotten middle child trope as well as do his best to make sure he never made Sam feel unimportant or left out, but would slip up from time to time. When that does happen, I think Sam would be more frustrated with Dean than anything else since he's empathetic enough to realize it wasn't the youngest's fault and would work really hard to not take it out on them. But if he ever did, he would do whatever it took to make it up to them while Sam and Dean worked out ways to make sure it didn't become a pattern.

one of the other most consistent ways I’ve seen ppl mischaracterize /infantilize jack is by giving him interest headcanons in shit that literal preschoolers watch and it simply must be corrected because 1) obligatory he’s not a fucking baby first and foremost, and 2) he’s obsessed with zombies. his favorite show is the walking dead. he’s a HUNTER. HE’S A WAR CRIMINAL AND A TEENAGE COSMIC HORROR. HE LIKES SCARY THINGS, HE CAN HANDLE SCARY THINGS, HE IS THE SCARY THING. can we please abandon that idea forever thank you

Smoker!Dean headcanons (aka if Dean was a smoker throughout the series)
As a teenager, Dean would smoke whenever he could get his hands on a cigarette, but it was pretty rare. Money was too tight to buy them, and it wasn't worth the risk of stealing them, but occasionally, Dean was able to trade for loose cigarettes. He loved the head rush and loved feeling like an adult.
Pre-series, Dean didn't start smoking in earnest until he started doing hunts without his father. John didn't like the smoking, so Dean hid it from him. Still, money was tight, so Dean only smoked a few cigarettes a day at most. His favourite thing in the world was being whiskey buzzed and sharing a cigarette with a girl.
Dean never, ever smoked inside the Impala.
Seasons 1-2 Dean is still smoking a few cigarettes per day, properly addicted at this point, and irritable when he isn't able to get a smoke break. Sam is constantly bugging him to quit, and Dean pretends he could quit any time he wants to. Sam gets non-smoking motel rooms whenever he can, which annoys the hell out of Dean.
Season 3, with the demon deal looming, Dean starts smoking more now, and by the end of the season, he is fully chain smoking regularly. Sam finds it gross but generally allows it to slide because he knows Dean needs it.
Season 4, Dean comes back from Hell with zero physical dependence on nicotine and decides to treat it like a fresh start. He doesn't smoke. He uses his experience with smoking to try (and fail) to empathize with Sam's blood addiction.
Season 5, Dean starts smoking when he's drunk, which turns into smoking when he's stressed, which by the end of the season, when he almost says "yes" to Michael, turns into him smoking all of the time again.
When he lives with Lisa and Ben, he tries to quit for their sake, but he still sneaks a cigarette outside on really bad nights. Lisa pretends not to notice.
Season 6, the smoking continues, but not as heavy as season 5. Sam is actively annoyed about it at this point, and Dean has long stopped finding smoking to be fun.
Season 7, as Dean spirals downwards after Cas' betrayal, he smokes much more heavily. It's starting to affect him physically, especially without Cas to heal him. He starts saying things like, "I'm getting too old for this." Since he isn't able to drive the Impala for most of the season, he smokes in the cars they steal, which really bothers Sam.
In Purgatory, Dean has no choice but to quit cold turkey, which is miserable, and once he's home, he continues that streak into seasons 8 and 9, his longest smoke-free period.
Unfortunately, demon!Dean picks up smoking again, and even when he's cured, smoking becomes one of his coping mechanisms for quelling the Mark.
Seasons 11 and 12, he struggles with trying to quit, going anywhere from days to months at a time without smoking before falling back into it. When Cas dies at the end of season 12, he begins chainsmoking again along with regularly getting black-out drunk, and Sam really worries for his brother's health.
After Cas returns in season 13, Dean begins working to quit again in earnest, creating a system with Sam, Cas, and Jack's help. This time, it sticks through the end of the series, but Dean does heavily consider starting up again as he spirals towards the end of season 15.
Post-series Dean is trying to maintain being smoke-free, especially since Cas is gone and Jack is hands-off. He knows any damage he does will be permanent this time, and he doesn't particularly feel like dying of cancer. But it turns out the boredom of the world not ending is worse for his cravings than the stress was. He starts smoking weed, trying to convince himself it's a proper substitute, but eventually, he just smokes weed because he likes it.

hey if you’re sad please consider Dean breaking into Sam’s apartment in 2005 and they squabble and then Sam recognizes Dean under his little stubble and they hop up and Jessica comes in and Sam says “this is my…brother? Dean” and glances at Dean a little questioningly and Dean gives a big goofy grin and he’s four months on T being called someone’s brother, SAM’S brother, feeling his first ever Gender Euphoria and everything evaporates for a moment except that feeling and being seen completely and being seen by Sam

I think Sam and Eileen started out celebrating Christmas through Jody and the girls, invitations in order not to let anyone drown because those kinds of days are horrible when your loved ones are gone. It was quite the unconventional Christmas, more movies and junk food than whole meals, trees and presents. It went on for a few years until Sam and Eileen started their family and decided to host.
There was a little kid now, so more typically christmasy stuff started to appear to give Dean II the kind of childhood neither his parents nor most of his aunties had. Claire and Kaia went for really loud toys with very bright lights... To annoy Sam specifically, because Dean II, while not as profoundly deaf as his mother, is also deaf. So their excuse was "He can hear some of it, stimuli are great for kids." Well, that was more so Jody trying to not make it seem like a targeted joke on Sam.
Dean II is absolutely a dotted on child.
Christmas is not a gloomy affair, after all.

I’d like to believe that in penance for how she treated her son, Rowena started taking care of the kids who made demon deals in hell, the ones who got damned in order to save someone else, the ones who lived their life badly because they had a parent like her. I like to think she takes care of them and has tea with them and tries to help them on their journeys, becoming a mother to all of them, and therefore earning the title of “The Queen Mother” where she hadn’t before. And I’d really like to believe that from his place in The Empty if he was awake, Crowley would be pleased with her for it.

in the good spn in my head, dean and cas sneak off to cuddle between cases all the time and everyone knows about it and no one says anything.
and i don't mean, like, you know. they're hooking up or together or anything. i mean literally just. hold hands. or lie together. hug each other. simple acts of physical comfort. like that one skrog comic where cas reads the parenting books and offers dean a hug!
i think it'll start out very randomly, very unconscious. maybe somewhere in late s9, after the whole angel army thing and the Ezekiel/Gadreel thing. they're probably just hanging out together, watching a movie or something. and Dean is so tired. he's so so so tired. he just wants to rest, you know? so he doesn't notice when he starts leaning against Cas, and notices even less when he passes out and slides down into his lap. Cas, for his part is both exhilarated and scared by the proceedings so he just kind of sits all still and unmoving, one hand holding dean's shoulder so he doesn't fall on his face when he's the trying to roll over and the other resting very lightly in his hair. cas thinks it's soft. Dean's hair is soft and not rough to touch. that feels like a miracle, somehow.
when they wake up dean is suuuuuper weird about it, but then he also realizes he's slept better than he has in ages. logically, it's because he's got another breathing body in the room with him. that's always been a source of comfort. but at this point, he also knows himself and he knows that the other half of it is because that body is Cas' and his monkey brain curled up in his fantasy world where this was a regular normal occurence. but anyway. yes at first he's like haha lol weird and awkward, but then cas looks at him like 🥺🥺🥺 and dean's spine is literally a pool noodle in general when it comes to cas things so he gives up the ghost.
it's a slow and stilted start, but it escalates very quickly. first they're reluctantly sitting on the couch in the dean cave together in a way their shoulders touch, and dean awkwardly lies on cas' lap all the while his brain is like omg his dick is right there, which, you know, not very helpful. but then cas will stroke his hair or his arm and his brain is static — the good kind— and he slips into sleep so easily. a few months later, they barely think before dean's maneuvering himself against the arm of the couch and cas settles between his legs, his back to dean's chest and they just cuddle all night. Then, they start going out on drives to nowhere. they'll stop at a diner sometimes, or just drive into the middle of nowhere, and then share a beer on Baby's hood wherever they stop. This ritual is sacred to dean (has only ever done it with sam [brother] and cassie [literally so in love])so he feels super nervous the first few times and then, like everything else they've been doing, it becomes habit.
Sometime around the year/year and a half mark, dean has a pretty bad nightmare and cas senses it bc he happens to be in the bunker and he shows up in his room like are you okay??? and Dean's like yeah yeah I'm good and cas is like do you want me to put you to sleep (talking about his grace) but dean's like nods. shakes his head. nods again. and cas is like ??? so dean's just like. just get in bed with me. and take off your coat. cas is confused but again, he is like a greedy lil man, so he gets into bed and holds dean until dean's sleeping, snoring against his collarbone and cas is thinking this is probably what joy is supposed to feel like.
so that becomes a regular thing.
they're essentially dating at this point, but no one says anything and they pretend like they don't have this thing going on (barely) behind the doors. they never talk about it, they never talk to anyone about it. but it's happening. it's like a beehive. they don't want to disturb it bc they know that whatever's behind all this is probably Chaos™ and they really don't have the spoons to deal with all that.
HOWEVER, important to note: everyone who has ever stayed at the bunker has walked in on them all cuddled up at some point or the other (Sam, Kevin, Charlie, Rowena, Mary, Eileen, CLAIRE) and they also don't say anything but this is kind of why everyone knows.
they kiss one(1) time and it's somewhere post-tombstone, pre-empty deal where things are Particularly Bad for all of them, and him and Dean are like. somewhere out in the fields. Dean's kind of drunk but he doesn't worry because Cas can always drive them back. and they're just sort of sitting there watching the sun set or sth. and Dean, seemingly randomly kisses him. it's kind of intense and crazy and Cas kisses him back but that's pretty much it. they don't talk about it that day, and they don't talk about it the days after that and the next time they sneak out, it's all back to normal.
But when Cas seeks out Dean's space, Dean doesn't stop him. Like he'll scoot across the front bench and just mold himself into Dean's side and Dean will drape an arm over his shoulder and they pretend like that's Normal and Doesn't Mean Anything.
Once, when they're in Dean's bed and Dean is holding Cas, he asks him, "don't you ever want more?" and Cas wants to say that he wants everything. he wants every atom that makes up Dean. but he also doesn't want to shatter whatever this fragile thing is. He's content with this too. he also knows that dean's gratitude is twisted and he will fold himself into roles he doesn't want for others. but the thing is, he doesn't fully understand what Dean is asking him. what he's telling him. so all he says is "You're my best friend." that's just as much of a confession. but they're speaking different languages and they still haven't learnt how to translate. dean just sighs, presses a barely there kiss to the back of Cas' neck and goes. "thanks, cas. you're my best friend, too." and that's that.
the deal - jack- Michael, all of it is a blur. all of it happens together. they stop the joyrides after that, finding excuses whenever they do have the time to do something else. movie nights are still sacred, and sometimes dean will let cas in his room when the nightmares are worse, but it's not the same..they're both holding things back — dean, the future he knows he wants now without a doubt but feels like he can't have and cas, the deal that'll kill him because he thinks Dean might want the same things. it's the most fucked up little tragedy.
after the empty takes cas and chuck is gone and they get him back, dean's like. what the fuck. and cas is like it's okay you didn't have to say it back i didn't expect you to and dean is like *I* asked you..before everything. i ASKED you. and cas is like but i don't want you to do it just for me and dean is like WTF DO YOU MEAN JUST FOR YOU i was there the whole time!! i kissed you!! and cas is like YOU WERE UPSET and dean's like we were literally dating!!! you just had to say something!!! and cas is like why didn't YOU say something then and dean is like I DID ASK and they go around in circles for like an hour before they start crying and hugging and dean is like i love you I love you so much i don't know what to do with it and cas is like i didn't know. i didn't know. and then they kiss.
PS: this is also why jack 100% thinks they're together and is very confused when they make the announcement officially because he thought they just didn't kiss in front of him. because like. sometimes moms and dads don't do that! like in tv shows!!!

Hey friend 😁
Congrats on 300 followers! You definitely deserve it!
Could I have a Sam Winchester headcanon with him dating a short girl, like 5'2?
Thank you girlie! 😘
Hello! Thank youu
Of course you can Sweetheart! Here they are, I hope they're okay<3

Tumblr media
Sam dating a short girl
listen, Sam knows that he's a big dude
so when you first started dating, he had the irrational fear of breaking you
roll over you in his sleep while he was having nightmares or something of the like
well, Sam you haven't met a short girl then
we climb wobbly chairs, counters, ladders, a wobbly board over two stools (...) just to get a cup
so dear Sam soon learned that while you were short, you were not the least bit fragile
counter make out sessions become his favourite kitchen activities
it gives you both a comfortable distance without any back pain
(well at least not for you two - Dean frequently complains about the things he walks in on, but hey, it wasn't like he and Cas were any better)
just because your boyfriend is a giant of a man, you don't stop climbing things to get what you want though
much to the chagrin of said boyfriend
"why didn't you just ask me to help you?" "Because it works just fine like this?" "I caught you just in time!"
the fight that followed this exchange was epic
bottom line: Sam arranged himself with you climbing furniture but stays close
his arm is almost always around your shoulder
whenever you wear high heels, Sam makes sure to stay close if the situation allows it
he likes to keep a hand on your back then
because of that one time you fell straight on the nose after taking half a step and he was across the room
you think it's sweet
it drives him crazy to see you wearing his clothes because they're so big on you - the way a simple shirt slips from your shoulder? Or you all sleepy and smiling in the morning when you wore one of his old t-shirts to bed? Sam is dead and gone
Table kisses!!!
Bonus:
Dean likes to pick you up randomly and throw you at Sam when he thinks his brother is in a bad mood
You scowl and complain that you're not a ragdoll but secretly you find it really funny
Also Sam always lights up like a f*king lighthouse when you're suddenly in his lap
Then you proceed to be 'gross' to get rid of Dean

The thing is. Sam was following him. you can see it. Sam came up from the basement room with Dean, he was right behind him. But by the time Dean gets to the stairs Sam was out of the shot completely. When they pan down to show lucifer, Sam isn't up the stairs, he's barely out of the doorway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is no hetero explanation.
Sam long legs Winchester who regularly runs couldn't keep up because Dean the bacon and burger scarf-er was running for the door to reach the man he loves that fast, or Sam was hanging back to let them have their moment. ... I just don't think Sam would let Cas be in danger like that. Which only leaves, well, the reason Lucifer called Dean and not Sam in the first place.
How can you tell Dean is in love with Cas? Because Sam isn't.

I just think Sam likes being the little spoon and tucking down into hugs and being the baby cuz if he can do those things it means he feels safe with the person. I think he enjoys the fact he's bigger than Dean and totally gets a kick out of ribbing him about it sometimes, and is happy he has the physical ability to have Dean's back; but that doesn't preclude the idea that he sometimes misses being smaller and the expectation of being safe and provided for that was often more of a longing than a fulfillment. Needs those moments where he can collapse into a safe embrace without expectations.
