Dean being the one to point the gun at Jack. Being the Abraham father figure???? Insane. Cas loved him no matter what. Sam always saw him as useful. But Dean saw himself being in the position John was in when he told Dean to kill Sam if he turned evil. Genuinely thinking that your son, whom you love so much, has truly turned dark side. Killed your mother in seeming cold blood. And then to stand there, have him look you in the face and submit as you point a gun at his head, knowing it will physically kill you too. God it’s so fucked. And if Jack had tried to fight him, he would have killed him too. But he didn’t and Dean couldn’t look Jack in the eyes and see the evil he had conjured up in his mind cause it wasn’t there, it was just the little kid in big kid clothing that he had grown to love. Fucking hell

Optimism freeform meta
Tumblr media
Jack, Harper, and the folly of pursuing of immature, illusory Perfection as the antidote to life's many disappointments.
///
Okay, here it comes. It's our rambling, group Optimism meta from discord that I promised once upon a time I'd post here. Apologies ahead of time if I get your Tumblr names wrong.
Harper's flat is decorated in ooey-gooey symbols of love.
Green for growth (though Harper's growth pattern is certainly arrested), and red for passion. We have the green-Italian amore in the symbolic kitchen of life, and a bright red heart near the entrance.
BEWARE: You're entering Harper's heart. It's black and bloody.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also see that her home is full to the brim with books and stories. She clings to them, hoping they'll bring her life meaning. The blood-red-pink-purple color theme continues in the form of her array of romance novels.
Tumblr media
Harper herself is clothed in red, in a Sayles-coded corduroy, perhaps a mate to the hunter's anorak jacket. Her little scarf is certainly Scooby-Doo-Daphne-esque, but it's also a RED BANDANA calling to mind that she's an OUTLAW, like Dave Matthews in the Tombstone episode.
///
Tumblr media
But her bedroom is more serene, stuffed with zen colors, serene green, and a bedful of childish stuff animals. It's dominated by strong protector-types like lions and elephants.
via @honeyedwhiskey: okay so I got intrigued by the fact that she has these particular stuffed animals. the lion, symbolizing stalking her prey, elephants for their memory and their brutality (maybe a nod to wanting community) and the tiger for her actual isolation. the puppy seems to be an older addition, maybe from childhood, and the smallest and most vulnerable one is being protected by the dog which seems to be a bear cub? reference to maybe a mama bear that protected her? the three at the top are what interest me the most though because harper is represented by the heart and the color red so the mouse is her, and the two pigs seem to be her parents, with one being a combination of colors and patchwork looking. so it seems to me that one of her parents was zombie-fied, maybe from a young age.
I like the symbolic nature Whiskey acribed to the stuffed animals above a lot!
I too think her reaction to abandonment and Vance speaks to something really fucked up in her necromancy family, like maybe a necromancy-coming-of-age-trial that went REALLY REALLY badly and wound up with her being totally alone.
Maybe it's like how Sam jokingly told Charlie: "You're not really a hunter till you've come back form the dead." Or like Cas told Jack of his own death, "It's something of a rite of passage around here."
Maybe you're not really a necromancer until you've killed and brought your family back and ofc Harper failing that test would fuck her up forever.
//
I noticed the teddy bear, too! There's a tee-tiny nod to the teddy-bear lovers' symbol above her bed, same as Marvelous Marvin has a red heart on his chest in season 15's Gimme Shelter. (And Dean's I Wuv Hugs from a million years ago.)
[The stuffed bear is] a simultaneous motif...of sexual intimacy and The Lover, it's also representative of The Beloved Child resulting from their contact.
(Jack is Marvin.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
///
Tumblr media
Here's love in the corner, illuminated by two lamps. Harper is getting Jack a book, a book about her little beloved hometown, McCook.
Deep down, Harper is lonely, and unlike her disdain for her other suitors, she's a little different with Jack here: she wants to be understood.
She wants him to understand her and her hometown. Just a little. She's prodding at the niggling, unusual, UNFAMILIAR feeling. So, she sits down and invites him to sit, to learn more about her.
By this point, it's possible she's figured out he's a hunter, which opens up the possibility of revealing her true self, for better or for worse. It's an intoxicating thought for Harper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jack hesitates, clearly interested but also a little bit "!!!!"
He's framed by the heart on the wall. Indeed Jack, like Dean and Mary, is a "heart" character. He's even clothed in one of Mary's key colors: dusky orangey pink. (Aside// You'll notice Connor also wears this color in Gimme Shelter.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
///
Unlike in Tombstone, where Jack wasn't (via script) all that interested in Athena and Dave's relationship, now Jack's clearly grown. He's even interested in physicality.
Even though his emotional core can be kinda prickly, like Dean and Mary, he's at root a very affectionate character, interested in experience affection/connection with others:
Tumblr media
So, he sits. Perseveres through he awkwardness. And lo and behold, Harper is as weird as he is.
They talk about having a positive outlook, even though they've had and terrible pasts, have done terrible things. And hey, look--she's getting the lamp treatment! How lovely.
They sit on the blue couch, as Harper tells him more about her past, subconsciously seeking his acceptance. The blue of the couch mirrors the blue color of her past, of her prom dress. We see her little prom queen crown, and we wonder...Harper is so awkward...
...does she really seem like the Prom Queen type?
Tumblr media
I suspect it was fake. That she manufactured her own popularity with bit of magic. To meet the perfectionistic obsession with her romance tales. She is at core a fearful character, fearful of messing up, or being imperfect, of not living up to The Dream (TM).
///
Tumblr media
Jack makes a quick getaway. In this shot, he's effectively the trope of the divine masculine, fleeing from love, "amore."
It's interesting that the kitchen, a bit like the bedroom, is earthier in tone, filled with more "valley" colors: of browns, greens. The kitchen is about the imperfect strivings of every day life, divorced from the high-dollar reds of Harper's romance-novel decor.
In the bathroom, Jack is clearly interested in exploring "love."
To Dean, he says, "Just in case (she is in love with me)...tell me everything you know about sex. Go!"
Jack is a curious-and-courageous character, too. He's prone to experimentation, which is also why he so often gets the drug ("I like cocaine!" and The Who) motifs. Like Cas, he's maybe a little scared, but he's going to go-for-it no matter how silly and awkward he might look.
That courage is probably something Harper senses in him. It's attractive to her, like the symbolic stuffed-animal lion-and-tiger protectors she has in her bedroom. She wonders:
"Is he strong enough to love the real me?"
In THIS sense, the thing with Vance isn't completely "a naughty nurse game." Deep down, at her root psychological base, Harper is testing the potential lovers' strength. Very classically mythical, really. And she's disgusted by her suitors because they keep failing and failing.
No one is like Vance. Not even Vance is like Vance. Her idea of Vance was never real, and she was never prom queen. But admitting that to herself is so painful, she constructs this horrible pattern of death and destruction.
///
"Her apartment has a lot of wallpaper/furniture from the 50’s! Or with that general aesthetic!" -Cal (@13-01)
It's so interesting, because this 50s retro theme is something that Jack, Dean, and Cas carry a lot, especially in terms of their "old-school" button-up pajamas and dressing downs. (Cas himself, with his overcoat, could be plopped in the middle of Mad Men tv series and fit into the surroundings, haha. And although we rarely see Sam carry the motif, but he dips into it in Peace of Mind as well.)
At the end of this episode, we'll see Harper seated in her own retro cafe with the same 50s vibe as well, a Charming Acres-sort of feeling. To me this symbolizes a backwards-looking illusion of perfection, that everything used to be simpler and better, and with enough effort, it can be simpler and better again.
Also there are dragonflies in her bathroom, a bit of a parallel to the lonesome fly plot that Sam and Charlie are on (in this same episode).
This too is the backwards-looking motif, of holding onto the illusory idea of Happiness (TM) so tightly that it becomes tragic and destructive.
///
Since even her idea of Vance isn't real, it's become like Amara's illusory idea of love. It can never let her down. "It can never hurt her."

spn was really like
“hey what if the spawn of Lucifer was a mama’s boy and loved his mother so much but also she died in childbirth because of what he is so he has this entire guilt complex about inadvertently killing her by existing for half his life, and so he decides to save his friend dad guys’ mom bc he’s projecting his own loss onto them so he rips the universe in half to go find her and then they bond together until she sees him as one of her sons and he sees her as a mother figure and she calls him sweetheart and he swears to always protect her and they both truly genuinely love each other, and then he’s gonna actually kill his mother for real this time and spiral into even more self hatred and guilt over it because for the second time in his life he’s killed his mother just by being what he is”
and you expect me to be normal about it.

RIP to my friend nixie. they stopped watching SPN after season 11. and asked about the finale. i wanted to immortalize what i sent (which includes a recap of seasons 12-15 so they would Understand.) so. read on if you wish, this monstrosity is going under the cut lol
so. in season 12 lucifer possesses the president of the united states (dont worry about it) & impregnates one of the president's staff members who was banging the president behind closed doors, republican Kelly Kline. through a series of events, cas winds up being the Adoptive Father. kid is born, but he had opened a rift to a different alternate universe the show so eloquently named 'apocalypse world'. it is a world where sam & dean were never born. through Another series of events, team free will PLUS mary winchester (yeah shes back from the dead, amara brought her back, dont worry about it lol) & cas tries to kill lucifer. he thinks he did, comes back through , and hes like there for .02 seconds before lucifer pops through & stabs cas. cas dies. mary beats up lucifer with angel brass knuckles or whatever & they fall through the rift & it closes. they are trapped there. at this exact moment, jack kline (kelly kline & lucifer/mr. president's baby) is being born. sam runs into the house to Check On That. dean however, falls to his knees next to cas's body & looks up desperately to the sky. (the cw said Not to read into this. it means Nothing. destiel who?!) also kelly died in child birth. bc spn Hates women.
thats the end of season 12.
season 13, we have jack. he popped out a fully fledged like. 19? 20? 21 year old?? bc his mom said he would have to Grow Up Fast. dean wraps cas's body in a curtain. alone. and is like crying & devastated. the bois and jack burn cas's body & dean looks like he wants to off himself (& he tries to in like. the next episode but Death brings him back). (also sorry im sooo bad at summary lol). we have the Widower Arc where dean bargains with a silent god to bring back cas, but Nothing. and dean is just fucking depressed as all shit. suddenly! cas is back!! BECAUSE jack heard dean yelling at sam about how its jacks fault cas is dead bc when jack was a fetus he showed cas a Vision of how he could bring Paradise On Earth if they allowed him to live (they wanted to kill him bc. like. Spawn Of Satan & all that). so jack uses his Powers™️ & brings cas back from the dead! yay!! a lot of other shit happens & the Empty (which is like. the Entity that encases all the angels & demons when they die, & where cas was when he was dead) Does Not Like that cas escaped. so, it wants to take jack to get back at cas. cas is like 'no fuck off thats my son lets make a deal. take me back instead' & the empty is like 'ok bitch 2 can play that game. i WILL take you. but ONLY when you experience a Moment Of True Happiness™️'. & cas is like 'bet.' bc! hes a depressed mf & figures it would take a Miracle to make him Truly Happy. (pls keep this in mind, its a surprise tool for later). ummm so yeah season 13.
season 14 had like. ANOTHER fucking michael/lucifer arc but it was Stupid. dean said yes to michael like the angels wanted in season fucking 4 & 5. & i dont Totally remember the plot but like. dean has michael trapped in a box in his mind & wants them to?? fucking?? put him in a warded coffin & chunk it in the ocean?? so michael will never hurt the world again?? also--its like. AU michael. and also mary is okay, & we get AU bobby & AU charlie & a lot of shit happens. anyway.
season 15: we get the Divorcr Arc™️!! dean & cas fight!! bc guess what? jack accidentally killed mary!! (yes! she died AGAIN!!) bc! he didnt know how to control his powers! & dean blames cas! so cas Leaves in a big dramatic breakup scene. we also find out that god (aka chuck) has been like. controlling Everything?? & free will Doesnt Exist?? & dean has a crisis & we get cas saying 'dean, you asked what about all of this is real. We Are.' (which we were apparently sooo crazy to read into!!) & also!? chuck brings back ALL the monsters salmon dean ever killed?? and rowena sacrifices herself to save the world! but! dont worry! she is now thenQueen Of Hell™️ & fucking THRIVING! anyway, season progresses, we get purgatory 2.0 and dean & cas are separated & dean lITERALLY GETS DOWN ON HIS OLD MAN KNEES TO PRAY TO CAS AND APOLOGIZE AND SAY HE FORGIVES HIM!! & then. a bit later. chuck starts poofing away Everyone On Earth bc he wants to destroy the multiverse. and also? death wants to kill dean i forget why. oh yeah! i think he stole her Death Book or whatever to try and see how to kill god. anyway. we have episode 15x18. Thee Episode of All Time. it starts with AU charlie and her gf. they are making eggs and vibing and all of a sudden her gf goes Poof. then sams gf Eileen goes Poof. so they round up as many friends as they can & put them in a warded place but they all go Poof. so sam is with the friends when this happens & also jack. and dean & cas have gone to the bunker to Fight Death. and. so. get ready for this. death shows up. she (yeah billie the reaper became death btw. long story) she starts to like. squeeze deans heart to kill him with magic. cas helps dean run through the bunker away from her. they get to the dungeon. death is literally banging on the door which cas had cut his palm to ward with a sigil of his blood with a knife he pulled from deans back pocket. (again: he cut his palm--another Surprise Tool For Later). deans like 'im so sorry man, we should have stayed with sam. shes gonna get in here, and shes gonna kill you, then shes gonna kill me' & cas is like 'well theres one thing strong enough to stop her' & he starts telling dean about the deal he made to save jack (yep, he never told him). and he says 'i always wondered what would break that curse. but i think i know now' & he. he fucking. he starts a speech about how he knows how dean sees himself, as a killer, a monster, daddys blunt instrument driven by anger, just like his enemies see him. BUT cas says dean is Not that. he says dean is 'the most caring man, the most loving man on earth' & deans like freaking out & is like 'why are you telling me all this? why does this sound like a goodbye??' & cas says, crying, but smiling, 'because it is' & then!! cas!! says !! 'i love you' !!!!!!!!! &&&&& death breaks down the door!! && the empty is materializing behind dean! & dean says 'dont do this cas!' & cas grabs deans LEFT SHOULDER WITH HIS BLOODY PALM! & says 'goodbye dean' & shoves him out of the way!! & the empty grabs cas!! && death!! & takes them away!!!!!! && dean is like!! freaking the fuck out sitting on the flooor with tears in his eyes!! && we cut to like. a bit later. hes Still there, crying, head in his hands, as his phone rings on the floor--its sam. end of the world, sam is calling, & he doesnt answer. we end the episode to deans crying. LIKE FUCK!!!!
15x19: they defeat god. jack like. absorbed him?? & he became god?? & then fucked off to do godly duties!? and did Not bring cas back????
(there are Theories that Chuck Won &thats why the next episode is so fucked and i Have To Agree)
15x20: okok. i fucking HATE THIS FUCKINGEPISDORNFMDNFNDNFNDBDND
anyway. so. cas is Not in the episode. at All. we have sam & dean? driving??? & there are like at LEAST 2 very Bad montages of random scenes that dont even make sense. sam & dean go to a pie eating festival. sam shoves pie in deans face. they Thengo on a case. its vampires. theres a vamp from like. season 2?? who was a minor charachter?? but they brought her back?? why??? idk. and. so. dean gets impaled on a rusty rebar nail during the fight scene in thr barn. he gives sam a long ass speech. they ?? touch foreheads for some reason??? && dean wont let sam get help??? & sam is like 'if cas were here...' & deans like 'yeah well he isnt.' like??? && then deAN FUCKING DIES??? && GOES TO HEAVEN??? && BOBBY IS THERE??? AND APPARENLY FUCKING ABUSIVE ASS JOHN LIVES DOWN THE ROAD??? && dean asks bobby 'so jack did all this?' (as in revamping heaven so people can be all together instead of separate like it used to be) & bobbys like 'well, cas helped' & then dean smiles, then goes?? & rides his car!?? bc his car is in heaven????? && we just see him driving interspersed with clips of sam on earth, burning deans body, and grieving dean, and later sam gets a blurry wife, we dont see who she is, and he has a son?? and he named him dean!? whixh we know bc the kid has on overalls that say 'dean' on them??? & then sam gets old and sits in the impala & cries while wearing a wig that looks like its from fucking party city?? then sam is on his death bed and his son is there?? && theres all these pictures around him of himsefl and dean & mary & john but?? no wife!? ans also!!? noone else like their friends?? & then sam dies & carry on my wayward son plays for like the second time in the episode. and we see dean on a bridge in heaven, he finally stopped driving & is staring off into the distance. and then he hears something behind him & smiles & we all thought 'CAS???' but NO its fuckingSAM somehow young again like whendean died?? & theylike. hug. and then it pans out & all the cast & crew are there?? and they say thank you to us for watching?? and then ?? its over?????? like Awhta thWHAT THE FUCK

✷ currently at S14 E16 "Don't Go in the Woods"
HOW TERRIBLE IT WAS THE MICHAEL ARC RESOLUTION??? SO UNDERWHELMING ew
On other news, I'm really appreciating how there's a return of the og horror elements in this season (also because what else there is to appreciate really 💀), although is it just me or the opening scenes before the title card are getting longer??? Are they trying to soft-launch other actors or smth????????
✷ regarding E15 "Peace of Mind"
VERY NICE AMBIENCE, the whole episode made me think of The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas (by Ursula K. Le Guin) and Pleasantville (1998) and I loved it for this exact reason although the explanation/resolution was kinda lame ngl.
Bonus: Sastiel episode!!! and Sam as "Justin" was absolutely hilarious (and maybe I screamed a little when it took Dean's name to make him break out of mind control, just a little 🤏)

"Peace of Mind" is one of my fave SPN episodes ever. I love how it pays homage to "Goodbye Stranger" in a fun, yet respectful way. This time is Cas who manages to "break the connection" and Sam "snaps out of it". Also, "God has a beard" probably one of my fave SPN quotes as well, lol.
Eta: oooooh actually Sam and Cas fight scene reminds me of "The Prisoner" as well! Sooo good! Such a good mash-up! I really needed more Sam and Cas screentime :(

destiel think they can't have each other bc they each think they destroy everything that they touch and the only good thing about them is how much they can be both a shield and a sword for their loved ones. samwena think they can't have each other bc sam is destined to be rowena's doom so she can't get to to close for fear and sam feels guilty of a murder he hasn't committed yet. but they loved each other still. there was so much love and either way what they wantedwas something they thought they couldn't have. but they could have had it. they could've

Was there a more ridiculous choice in season 13 than having Dean let Michael in? In Supernatural, the land of missed opportunities, how much more satisfying would it have been to have Sam and Jack defeat Lucifer together while Dean and Castiel destroyed Michael? Instead we got the most embarrassing fight in the whole show and a waste of a next season including Maggie, the most perplexing, annoying addition to the show ever. I know the show was on it's last lap but seriously, it's like they all ran out the door and left the monkeys in charge.

wow forgot about Castiel and Jack's whole conversation in 14x02 about stopping Michael!Dean:
JACK: So they’re going to try to kill him? CAS: Uh, no. No, the plan is subdue him using angel cuffs and spellwork. They have to get Michael out of Dean. JACK: And if he doesn’t leave? CAS: Then they’ll try to drive him out. JACK: And if that doesn’t work? CAS: Jack- JACK: Cas, Michael has to be stopped. CAS: I know, and he will be - after Dean is- JACK: No, Dean doesn’t matter. You’re all so focused on trying to save Dean and I get it, I understand, but - if he can’t be saved, if it comes down to him or Michael - Michael has to be stopped. Caged, or killed- CAS (shouting): And if that means that Dean dies too? JACK: Then Dean dies. I know this Michael. I’ve seen what he’s done to an entire world, and so have you. If stopping that from happening here means that Dean has to die, then …. Do you think he’d want it any other way?
And that's 100% Jack, after he's been dubbed part of the family and before he loses his soul. It just makes me laugh, thinking of the handwringing I've seen over Dean having more or less the same attitude about Jack at various times. Guess they're both willing to put certain "family" members aside when push comes to shove and some big bad needs to be stopped. They're actually pretty alike in that way. Jack's adamance, like Dean's, comes from a place of fear that he won't be able to protect those he loves, based on past experiences of loss. And he even pulls a very Winchester move at the end (can't credit it entirely to Dean, as Sam does this too, and even Cas), by putting that little guilt trip in there, that little moral justification (it's what Dean would want!), which of course has nothing to do with his actual, emotionally motivated reasoning, masked as pragmatism.
And then of course the next episode Dean is back and they're hugging again, lol

Okay, so late seasons Supernatural veered away from its gothic horror roots, right? Yeah. But then they threw in Nick's story arc through season 14 and, well, that is just a masterfully classic horror storyline. There's touches of noir to it, the way he investigates the murder of his wife and baby, meeting with the reporter in the cafe, for example. And religious horror in his attachment to and identifying with Lucifer, his longing to be possessed. And the slow unfolding of what happened. The way the scenes were blocked and lit, the whole thing...and the music! Ugh, the music! It's honestly so horrifying and I just love it.

Going feral over the fact that Dean makes a huge deal about not telling Sam he’s going to kill himself because he thinks that Sam will be the only one who can stop him but literally does not and will not speak to Cas. Almost like he’s the one who might actually be able to talk him out of it

I love that moment where Rowena tries to insult Sam by calling his desperate use of black magic a very her thing to do. And what does Sam do? He just preens like an overgrown cat--says "why, thank you."
(And Rowena looks horrified, then sniffs and calls him a villain.)

todays tally on the “things about jack that have been almost erased by the baby au” is just how truly genuinely insane (and funny) they are. they pretended to be a coke addict to sneak into rehab and get kaia. their attempt at making friends was teaching the Lebanon kids knife combat because he hasn’t had any other socialization outside of constant war and violence. he loves hunting and he loved the war torn apocalypse refugee camp despite their constant risks of death and loss and suffering.
he straight up fucking decapitated a Gorgon with a fucking sword and just stepped over the headless corpse like an ugly carpet. they disobeyed Death Herself just to save someone they vaguely remember caring about and having responsibility over, then blackmailed the fucking reaper that was sent to watch him into keeping quiet or else Billie would kill her for failing to keep him in line. he attempted to strangle someone in a fit of rage that was so bad it took three gunshots fired into his back to snap him out of it.
some of his personality trait in the fucking wiki are literally how his “protective instincts are in fact, so strong that he will retaliate or turn against anyone if they have hurt someone he cares about” and how “because of Jack’s desire to protect his loved ones, he can show a ruthless side to himself at times.” he used necromancy, magic so evil and dark and potent that the self proclaimed evil skank Rowena Macleod wouldn’t dare to use it, just to bring Mary back.
they were smiling the whole time they fought Michael and especially when they exorcised/killed him. they were smiling and enjoyed torturing Nick and it was literally canonically in-script described as a cathartic kill. when the last Grigori had him bound and held at knifepoint in the church he smiled and said “You can’t kill me” and was still smiling while talking about the other Grigori he’d killed and eaten the literal fucking hearts of.
jack is canonically wanted by the fbi since dean opened a file at some point after Mary’s death + jacks disappearance, and alongside having multiple charges pending on said file, they’re considered armed and dangerous, too. They’re also literally personally hated and personally murdered by God Himself.
But we stay silly :3
