My ranking of SPN seasons (based only on their PLOT) pt. 3
In my previous posts (here and here) I've covered the following:
15: Season 14
14: Season 15
13: Season 7
12: Season 3
11: Season 6
10: Season 13
9: Season 12
8: Season 1
7: Season 10
Let's continue!
6. Season 9: The plot for this season runs on parallel tracks: on one hand we have the consequences of the spell that Metatron cast at the end of season 8 (ie: angels have fallen, chaos ensues); on the other hand, we have the heroes' quest, finding and killing Abbadon. These 2 parallel plots find their meeting point in the Mark of Cain: frustrated because he's unable to kill Abbadon AND because of his serious fallout with Sam, Dean gives in and accepts the curse. His choice will have immense consequences on the heaven-related plot: it will be revealed that Castiel, who was working to settle things out in heaven, will give up everything to save Dean. Plot-wise, this was a good season. Once again, I felt that the death of a secondary character (Kevin Tran, RIP my poor baby boy), was done for emotional sake and to aggravate the heroes' fallout. It felt unnecessary, cruel and, frankly, not well thought-out (but the writers have already made the same mistake with Bobby and will make it again with Charlie SO at this point I think that they know what they are doing, I simply don't agree with their writing choices). All in all, the season was quite good, it did its job. Can't complain.
5. Season 2: This season expands on the season 1 plot, so basically we are still dealing with the heroes' personal vendetta against the Yellow Eyes demon who killed their mother. However, this time we are presented with more allies and enemies, the Winchesters' backstory gets more complicated and we start to guess that there's more at stake for the two brothers. It's not just payback anymore: the plot starts to thicken and we glimpes that higher powers were pulling the strings all along. Mary Winchester's death was destined. It's a strong season that starts with John's death and almost ends with Sam's death but not quite: the last episode is able to keep us interested for what's to come as we find out that Dean has made a demon deal to save his brother. I didn't like some "minutiae", like the whole thing about other humans being infected with demon blood at 6 months old as a "back-up" plan in case Sam was not the One. Sorry but when Destiny enters the chat you either go all-in or not, there are no back-up plans. Also, it turns out that Sam is not exactly The One since he gets killed by the other guy whose name I forgot. Soooo, you know... this doesn't sound solid, you can tell that the whole thing is there to 1) fill in episodes; 2) give writers some space in case things don't go as planned. I don't know, I was kinda bummed about it, yeah.
4. Season 5: This might sound controversial but... I didn't exactly like season 5's ending. I know that, according to the majority of articles I've read, this is considered THE perfect SPN season but.. you know, it doesn't cut it for me. The plot is very good, though, so here's why it's still high on my own personal ranking. Once we've established that Sam and Dean are the destiny's children (LOL) and that their own existence was predestined, we are now left with the big IF. A sort of "will-they-won't-they". Will Dean say YES to Michael and become his vessel? Will Sam say YES to Lucifer? I like it, this is good and the plot is well-developed throughout the whole 20+ episodes. BUT, here's the BIG but. I hated, HATED, the "Adam becomes Michael's vessel so that Dean can safely say no and the plot can still go as planned" expedient. I truly hate this kind of things with a passion. First thing first, I detest writers when they introduce "disposable" characters such as Adam (and many others in the show, tbh). This is my own personal pet peeve so I can understand why other people are not as bothered by this as I am. Aside from that, as I've said before, once you introduce DESTINY in the plot you cannot have back-up plans. If you do, the whole concept is weakened and, as a refult, the plot feels cheap. We had established that Dean and Dean only could be Michael's vessel. However, SURPRISE! Adam, being his half-brother, can be a vessel, too! Yu-hoo, Apocalipse can still happen even if Dean says NO! Ma'am, please. No. It's also very sexist since it implies the father's blood is the predominant factor in this whole charade (Adam is John's Winchester third ((maybe, who really knows at this point??) son). This is a big NO for me. Since it's an intrinsic part of the plot I can't walk away from this.

might follow this up with more thoughtful meta and less of a vent but I gotta get this out: I finally got around to watching the second half of season 9 for the first time since 2019 and boy do I want answers. namely how did half of fandom (it feels like) get convinced that the season is a rape narrative and that sam's anger and response to the experience have anything to do with the trauma of possession and lacking bodily autonomy. I'll be honest, I was expecting to see where that reading comes from on this rewatch, and instead I realized how objectively inaccurate and misleading an analysis it is. and no, it's not 'open to interpretation'--it's very clear what the conflict is, why Sam reacts the way he does, and what the story arc is; it has everything to do Dean lying to Sam, treating him not like an equal partner but like the little brother that needs to be protected--and here's the crucial part--at the expense of others, and especially at the expense of Kevin's life, and what that means about their priorities and values as hunters. it's got nothing to do with the horrors of possession. it's got everything to do with Sam and Dean's ethical role in the world, their net effect for good or ill. and it's also tied up in Sam's martyr complex. it's a perfectly natural extension of his arc in every season up till now, his struggle with his personal innate nature, and his desire to be and do good.
The cool thing is that when you view season 9 as it's meant to be viewed, you see how perfect a response season 10 is, with its mirror narrative. the idea that season 9 and gadreel are an unhealed trauma hanging over sam and dean is totally false. in 8-10 each brother struggles with his own self-worth, feels they'd be better off dead--and there's situations where the world may be better off with them dead!--and the other brother goes to unethical lengths to save him, because they realize, and ultimately both accept, that they can't lose the other, not under those circumstances. lines like "don't go thinking that's the problem because it's not" and "I lied," that frustrated me before with their opacity, make perfect sense now that my view is no longer clouded by fan-invented discourse. they're linchpins in a cohesive, balanced, multi-season emotional story arc that bring sam and dean to a place of equal footing.
The sort of ironic part is that, I realize now, I never fully understood Sam's perspective in the conflict before. season 9 was stressful for me in the past, because, being a fan first and foremost of the brother bond, I could only really see Dean's perspective and interpret Sam's anger as a rejection of the bond. but I felt that I ought to be able to see Sam's side; I didn't want to just be angry at the character or his writing. so when I came to tumblr in the finale-induced craze of 2020 and read so much meta predicated on the idea of Sam carrying this deep wound over the bodily violation of Gadreel, I more or less thought 'oh I guess that's what I was missing, all these fans who call themselves sam stans repeat it unquestioningly so there must be truth to it, they ought to understand their own favorite character.' How silly of me, to ever trust internet fandom on anything (or stans on the character they stan). I should've returned to the source material ages ago, would've saved me a lot of headache. because I do understand Sam's behavior perfectly now. it doesn't anger me, because I get and sympathize with his values, just as I do with Dean's. turns out when you actually watch the show and don't try to force it to conform to your fan-made narrative, it actually makes sense.

Cas offers gifts to Sam and Dean, and their reaction is really different
Cas knows humans celebrate Christmas every year on December 25th. So now that he is human, maybe he should try it. He also knows that Sam and Dean never do that, at least not as often as the average human as far as he can say, but he wants to offer them gifts anyway. Because they welcomed him at the bunker since the angels fall and that's the least he can do to thank them.
He thought about what he could give them. The brothers are really different from one and other so he must find something that they like, something different for each one of them. He found an idea for Sam when he heard the brothers bickered about their fetishes one day in the war room while he was digging into a book in the library. He discovered Dean’s fetish is cowboys and Sam’s serial killers. He doesn't know much about either of those, but what he do know is that Sam likes to read.
He asked Dean to drive him to the library on December 23th, Dean complained about it. He asked him questions, Cas answers he was searching for a book for himself, Dean still complained, talking about the internet and how Cas could easily order it there but drove him to the library anyway. Cas got out of the little store, happy, because he found what he wanted for Sam. Dean didn’t complain more on their drive back to the bunker after seeing Cas’s smile.
For Dean's gift, the difficult part was to find which to choose, because Dean likes a lot of things, like movies, music, books, porn, burgers, and pies. But the last one Cas knows how special it is for him. He saw it in his eyes multiple times when he talked about it. He could swear the green of them was even more intense when the word 'pie' was pronounced. So he decided to buy Dean a whole pie for him to eat.
On Christmas morning, Cas enters the library where Sam is already searching into the lore about angels falling, the Scribe of God, Abaddon, or any of their current issues. He wrapped the book as best as he could and hides it behind his back as he approaches where Sam is sitting. He clears his throat to get his attention.
"Sam," he calls.
"Hey Cas, I didn't hear you coming." Sam startles but relaxes as soon as he realizes it’s just Cas.
"Here, I have a gift for you." Cas says, handing the gift toward Sam who looks surprised.
"What's that for?" Sam asks, frowning but smiling as well.
"Merry Christmas, Sam - I wanted to thank you for letting me stay at the bunker with you." Sam is still surprised but stands up and grabs the gift anyway.
"Cas, that wasn't necessary, but - huh - thanks, man." Sam smiles and hugs Cas, manly patting him on his back. "I'm sorry I've nothing for you." Sam apologizes, and adds, "Merry Christmas I guess." He didn't actually realized today was December 25th until Cas told him merry Christmas.
"Open it." Cas says, impatient, waving his hand towards the gift. And Sam does, he reads the title. "Oh, thanks, man. I can't wait to read it once I'm done with the lore." Sam is smiling, patting the book’s cover.
"I could help you with the lore, like that you can take some time to read it." Cas is smiling back, happy that his gift is appreciated.
"Yeah," Sam answers and in a second Cas is leaving the library, heading toward the kitchen, where he knows Dean is, drinking his usual first coffee.
"Hello, Dean." Cas says as he enters the kitchen, his arms hidden behind his back.
"Morning, Cas." Dean answers, at the coffee machine, pouring coffee into his empty cup. He is wearing his grey robe like every morning.
"Did you eat yet?"
"No, why?" Dean asks, he turns around to face Cas and realizes he came closer and he is hiding something. "What's in your back?" Cas doesn't wait any longer, feeling too impatient to see Dean's reaction after his success with Sam. He hands the big pie to Dean.
"Merry Christmas, Dean." He says, smiling.
Then, Dean doesn't know if it's because of the exhaustion from endless research, the alcohol from last night he drank to help him finish his lore book, the fact that it is too early for him to think, or his joy to have a whole pie given to him, but the fact is that he takes it from Cas's hands and pecs his lips with his own before walking to the kitchen table to taste his gift, leaving a frozen Cas standing near the kitchen counter.
Dean is settled at the table, his cup of coffee near the pie and a fork in his hand, which he grabbed on his way to the table, ready to dig into it when he realizes what he just did. The fork falls from his hand on the table with a loud, clattering noise, releasing Cas from his frozen state.
Dean turns around and their eyes meet, but they remain speechless. It could be easy to just pretend that it never happened. Cas could walk away and Dean would just enjoy his pie silently. But it's impossible, because it happened and it felt so natural that it took Dean at least 2 minutes to realize what he just did.
"Cas, I'm sor -" Dean starts.
"No" Cas cuts him. "Just don't, don't apologize, please." He walks closer to the table, where Dean is still sitting but turned around to face him. Dean is surprised by Cas's reaction, because he thought – well, he doesn't know what he thought, but not that for sure. He didn’t expect to hear that tone in his voice, because Cas almost sounded like he was begging. Dean looks up at him as he approaches. Cas walks towards him carefully, like he would try to approach a scared little kitten without making him run away.
"Cas," Dean says, not moving his eyes away from him, and Cas understands so much with his name spoken alone, judging by Dean's voice and his eyes. He stops in front of him, and the hunter doesn't seem to want to run away, because his gaze is locked on the man standing in front of him. Cas reaches out carefully with his hand, brushing Dean's jaw before cupping it. Dean leans into it, closing his eyes. He looks so beautiful and vulnerable like that, and this is only for Cas to see.
"Dean," he lets out, "I'd like to try that again." Dean opens his eyes widely. "Only if you want to." Cas reassures, not wanting to force him.
"Yes." Dean answers and gets up, only then he realizes how close they are standing, even closer than usual. "I - yes." Cas craddles his face again and leans his own head closer. Dean closes his eyes and the gap between them, their lips only brushing against each other at first, as if it was their first kiss. It's not, but it's the first intentional one at least.
It's tender as they stroke each other's lips, Dean's fist holding on Cas's collar, pulling him in. His other hand comes to rest on Cas’s waist, pressing their bodies together. Cas’s hands bury themselves into the hunter’s hair, holding on to them, tugging at them to angle his head as he wishes to. Their kiss turns into something more passionate and desperate, their tongues stroking each other, exploring each other’s mouth. When they part away, both breathless and panting, Dean smirks and declares, “Thank you for the pie, Cas.”

Ennis heads back to the restaurant where his girlfriend died and sneaks inside. It's closed at this time of day, but that doesn't stop him from getting the answers he thinks he deserves. There is a secret club in the back where he saw some people go in last night, and he sneaks into that room only to see a much larger room that looks exactly like the restaurant.
You arrive just in time to hear Ennis shout in fear. Ennis is pointing a gun at a man who doesn't seem fazed by the weapon.
"Chicago PD! Stay right where you are!"
"I don't think so."
He bares his fangs when you three enter with the intention of killing everyone here.
"What the...?"
As the vampire is about to attack Ennis, Noah takes his dart gun and shoots him twice with Dead Man's Blood darts. Dean runs up to the vampire and slices his head off with his machete, startling Ennis.
"He looks better with a little off the top, don't you think? If you want to run, now's the time," Dean warns.
"I'm not going anywhere until someone tells me what the hell's going on."
"You should go."
"No."
"Alright, Sam or Y/N. Give him the talk."
My name is Y/N Winchester and this is my husband Dean and his brother Sam. We're hunters that kill vampires, werewolves, demons, and everything else evil in this world."
"So you're, what, monster cops?"
"I just said we're hunters."
"What killed my girlfriend?"
"We're trying to figure that out. From what you told us, this thing sounds new or Freddy Krueger," Dean comments.
He starts looking in the cabinets behind the bar for some kind of clues.
"What about the guy I saw in the mirror? With the messed-up face?"
"He's probably a wraith. These things can look like humans until you catch them in a mirror or through a camera."
"So, you're gonna find this... whatever... and chop his head off?"
"Yeah. If that doesn't work, try a silver bullet."
"Hey, guys? This cabinet is full of blood and meat. A lot of meat. This one is labeled 'Susan'," Dean says and holds up a bag of human meat.
"That's disgusting. Well, if Sal Lassiter was here, then he's not human."
"So, what, we got monsters killing monsters now?"
"Maybe. We have to see his body."
"I'm coming with you."
"No, you're going to stay here."
"Or what? Are you going to hurt me? Kill the girl I love? Ruin my damn life?! Yeah, you're too late buddy."
"Ennis, listen. I get it. Believe me, I've been there," Sam relates, "but what we do is messed up. So, do yourself a favor and stay out. You can get hurt, too."
Ennis isn't too happy at being told no, especially if it involves his girlfriend. You have a feeling he won't be able to let this one go, but you have a job to do here. You need to get it over with so you can go back to hunting Abaddon down.
The kids are happily working on their Lego sets when you get back to the hotel, but you, Sam, and Dean are doing research on this town and the people in it. The more you dig, the more shocking the articles get.
"Check this out. I'm finding a bunch of reports of different kinds of monsters all throughout the city. Only they're witness reports. One says he saw a man bite into the neck of someone and drank their blood. In another, a woman killed a jogger and ate his heart out. There are a bunch of reports of strange occurrences all over town. From what I gather, there are five different kinds of monsters running amok here--vampires, werewolves, djinn, shapeshifters, and wraiths."
"Monster city?"
With a little more research, you get to the heart of these attacks.
"I traced the monsters back to five different families that run Chicago like some kind of mafia ring. They deal with stuff like shakedowns and organ trafficking between monster clans. Werewolves run the Gold Coast, the Djinn owns the South Side, the Shapeshifters are kind of spread out that try to keep the peace between each species, I'm not sure where the Vampires reside, and not much is known about the Wraiths."
"What is this, the 1950s?" Dean scoffs.
"Guys, this entire town is run by monsters. Humans have no idea they're here."
"Get this," Sam begins, "I found out where Sal's body is, and a man named Julian Duval paid three grand just to look at his corpse."
"We have to find Julian. No one drops three grand just to see a dead body. Do you have an address?"
"Yes. It's across town."
"Let's go. Noah, stay here with the girls."
"Okay."
He doesn't mind since he's too busy playing with his Lego set. You leave your phone behind just in case he needs you and spell the room once you leave. If it's true that monsters are running around this entire town, there is no way you're leaving your kids without some kind of protection.
It's well past sundown by the time you get to Julian's house. You're not sure what to say knowing this house is filled with monsters that might recognize the infamous Winchester hunting team.
"Not only did this guy drop three grand, but he also lives in a fucking castle. Who the hell is this guy?" Dean scoffs.
"If we're lucky, someone who knows what happened to that monster boy."
"This place could be crawling with monsters who might recognize us. We need to have a plan before we go in. Any ideas?"
As you're thinking of a plan, a gunshot goes off somewhere on the Duval property followed by a woman screaming. Without thinking, you break open the front gate and rush over to the source of the noise. Ennis and some man you don't know are by the trees, and it looks like the man you don't know is hurt by the way he's holding his chest.
"What the hell is going on?"
"It took her," the man pants.
"Who are you?"
"His name is David Lassiter. He's a shapeshifter," Ennis explains.
The house alarm goes off and guards rush out of the Duval mansion.
"Okay, we have to go now! Come on!
There will be time to question David later but right now, you need to get out of here before Duval security shows up and kills you all. Luckily the kids are not in the car otherwise not everyone can fit inside. You're in between Ennis and David to make sure nothing nefarious is happening while Sam and Dean take the front.
"Okay, what the hell is going on?" you ask David.
"Look, Chicago isn't what it seems. Five different families run this city--monster families."
"We know. I read something about that after hours of digging through buried articles. I didn't think it was true."
Dean pulls over on the side of the road where it's safe to get out, and David immediately calls his sister who was the woman you heard screaming, and who had been taken.
"Okay, not that I didn't believe you, Y/N, but you're telling me there are five different monster families that run Chicago? What is this, The Godfather with fangs?"
"If it is, I'm gonna need all the help I can get," Ennis says.
"He doesn't quit. I'll give him that."
"Violet's not picking up. Shit," David curses.
"Is Violet a shifter, too?"
"Werewolf. If she has her cell, we could trace the signal."
Sam takes out his laptop and opens the website he uses to track cell phones.
"What's her number?"
"Take me with you, and it's all yours."
"No! Hell no! He's a fucking transformer!" Ennis exclaims.
"Yeah, well, sometimes you gotta work with the bad guys to get to the worse guys. Suck it up."
"Dude, I'm right here," David sighs.
"Yeah, I see you."
Knowing he's allowed to come along, David gives Sam Violet's cell phone number. Her cell phone is located in some creepy building that has no lights on and an unkempt front lawn.
"Alright, the signal is coming from in there."
"Hey, thanks for... you know. I'm sorry about your girlfriend."
"Look, I don't need an apology from you."
"I lost someone, too, okay?! I'm trying here."
Ennis knows he's being an asshole, and he sighs deeply. They must have found each other well before you found both of them on the Duval property.
"I'm sorry about your brother. He spoke about you at the end. He said, 'David, I'm sorry. I didn't have a choice'."
"Alright, you guys can kiss and make up later. We got work to do. Come on."
Dean opens the trunk and gives weapons to everyone except for you. David checks the gun he was given and looks at you in confusion.
"Aren't you going to grab a weapon? It's not smart to go in there without something."
Your eyes glow blue as you blast the side of the house with your magic. Both Ennis and David jump back from shock at the noise and the fact that you have powers.
"Sweetie, I am the weapon."
You lead the group with your magic lighting the way. You thought the building was a house but it's more like a small warehouse. There aren't many rooms Violet can hide in, but there is a tunnel that leads deeper underground where she could definitely be. The tunnel leads you further down underground until you get to a fork in the road. Three different tunnels branch out from the one you're in, so you have to split up at this point.
"You know, out of all the monsters living here, witches like you might have been a smart idea to let in."
"There ain't no witches like me."
"Alright, you're with me, Romeo," Dean says to David.
"Kid, you're with me," Sam says to Ennis.
"We'll meet back here if we can't find anything."
You go one way, Ennis and Sam go another, and Dean and David take the last tunnel. It's not hard getting lost in the maze of tunnels that seem to go on forever. It has a bit of an echo down here, so you can hear Dean or Sam if they decided to yell, and one of them did.
"David's gone!" Dean yells.
"I'll find my way to you. Keep looking for him and Violet!" you yell back.
It takes ten minutes to maneuver through the tunnels, but you end up finding Sam and Dean together in a tunnel you haven't explored yet.
"Where the hell could they be?" Sam asks.
Suddenly, you hear David yell from a room down the tunnel you're in. You rush into the room to see Violet and David in each other's arms, Ennis with a gun in his hands, and an unknown man on the ground in pain with wounds. He must be the one who has been killing monsters in town because why else would Ennis look like he's about to murder him?
"What'd we miss?" you ask.
"I know you," the man says to Ennis. "I'm sorry about your girl, but she was in the way. You understand. I know you do. They're monsters!"
"I only see one monster here."
Ennis shoots the man dead. He had that goal set the second he saw his girlfriend get murdered. Violet and David aren't the villains here, so you let them go back to their homes. They know you'll be bad if they decide to go off the trails. After today, you don't think they'll be wanting to live in this city anymore.
Now that Ennis killed his girlfriend's killer, he doesn't know what to do. On one hand, he knows this town is infested with monsters, and on the other, he got what he wanted. He could go back to his life and become none the wiser.
"Do you live here alone?" you ask when you drop Ennis back off at his house.
"My sister's on the other side of town, my mom's out of the picture, and my dad died in the line of duty a long time ago."
"I'm sorry to hear that." Dean's phone rings, and he steps off to the side to answer it. "So, what's next?"
Looks like Ennis is choosing to stay on the hunting path knowing there is a town full of monsters who could kill him.
"Nothing. You're done."
"Okay, we're on our way," Dean says.
"Excuse us for a second." You and Sam join Dean who hangs up his phone. "What's going on?"
"We got a hit."
"You want to leave?" Sam gasps. "Dean, this city is crawling with monsters."
"Cas has a line on Metatron. This is what we've been waiting for. This is our shot, Sam."
"You're leaving?" Ennis asks when he overhears the conversation.
"Yeah, but we'll call in some other hunters--pros--and download them on the monster mob situation."
"Look, I can--"
"Ennis, serious, don't," Dean cuts him of. "If you get into this too deep, there's no getting out."
You don't want to leave Ennis alone to fight a city's worth of monsters, but Metatron takes first priority. That son of a bitch is going down, and you're going to be the one to put a knife through his heart for messing with your family.
No one, and you mean no one, fucks with your family and lives to tell about it.

It's funny to think that the like massive glaring issue of Dean throwing Cas out with nothing is in part caused by like. The show removing money as an obstacle for the characters. Like, if you just make it so Sam and Dean don't have infinity resources and magic credit cards then then situation becomes much more understandable. If all Dean has to offer is the cash in his wallet, a fake credit card that'll eventually start getting declined and whatever advice he can give him on the way out the door, it makes more sense that Cas would be struggling. If getting Cas money was causing visible inconvenience for Dean it would make more sense for Cas to refuse his help and try to be self reliant.
Like I think the bunker can work great here as a resource for Sam and Dean that makes things easier for them: they are no longer homeless, they don't have to worry about the expense of motel rooms whenever they're not actively on a case, they probably don't have to worry about buying things like spell components or specialized bullets depending on how stocked the men of letters armory is. Maybe even there are even unappetizing but serviceable rations they can rely on if they every find themselves with no money for groceries. But these aren't really things that can benefit Cas if he's not living with them, and Sam and Dean still don't have a strady income they can rely on. They have resources in the bunker that they can turn around for a lot of cash, like ancient artifacts and all those classic cars, but not without time and effort, and that could be like. An ongoing conflict. Instead of choosing Sam over Cas once Dean is like, constantly having to choose whether he puts time and resources into making sure Cas is safe or managing the situation with Sam, and failing both of them because he can't be honest with either of them.
Then the only issue is like, why can't Cas stay with someone else? And the answer is that he's being hunted down by the angels and he's not willing to risk someone's life who's offering him hospitality. Especially if he thinks that the danger is why Dean kicked him out, he'd be less willing to stay in one place at all and being on the move would only make it harder for him. Like I think having Cas be more explicitly "on the run" would also go along way to making it seem less like Dean is being careless with his well being bc then like, he would be both less well situated to provide for himself And Dean might have a harder time staying in consistent contact with him.
I think ideally Dean would send Cas to Jody, thinking he could stay there indefinitely, and then he ends up skipping town within like a week, and when Dean finds out and manages to contact him he's like, I know why you kicked me out, it's because you're worried the angels would come looking for me, well I don't want to lead them to Jody either. And Dean like, it's too close to the truth to Deny it but it does let him say like, It's just because Sam is sick, and as soon as he's better you can come home, which causes issues down the line when Cas gets to see Sam up and about and apparently healthy because of Gadreel, and Dean still hasn't/won't let him come home, and he starts to consider other reasons Dean might not want him there.
