ok but just. thinking abt jack telling cas in 15x15 that sacrificing himself to save the world and becoming a bomb is his choice. like this is team free will, and jack has the autonomy and will to choose. he's making this choice, even if no one else is on board, because they're not. cas certainly is not, and he immediately leaves to find another way. sam isn't either when he finds out. and then there's dean.

dean, who has been struggling the entire seasons with the reality that chuck has been keeping them in a rat-maze their whole lives. dean's arc this season has been showing him slipping into utter desperation to break out of chuck's story. he tells billie he needs chuck gone, and he doesn't have to like every part of the plan. and this part of the plan? jack's sacrifice? yeah, he doesn't like it. despite what billie implies, that jack's sacrifice is the only way dean will forgive jack, dean doesn't want this. he doesn't want jack dead. he's been working through his feelings of grief and anger post-mary and working toward forgiveness and repairing his relationship with jack. that's the core thesis of Last Holiday. he wants them to be a family again, it's the chuck desperation that gets to him and twists things. but at his core, no he doesn't want jack to die, but he feels like they have no other options and he needs chuck gone. he can't live like this anymore! that's why he explodes in the car with sam at the end of 15x16, because dean does not want this anymore than sam does, but he feels like they have no choice. and this is also indicative of how much dean is slipping, which will come to a head in the next ep, 15x17. because their core mission and belief is there is always a choice. team free will !!!!

it's a big clanging warning bell and red flag that dean feels so hopeless here, that he feels they have no other choice than to let jack go through with this sacrifice. but it's also very in-line with dean's own personal actions and beliefs that when the world is on the line he is always willing to put himself on the line to save it. dean will always self-sacrifice to save the ones he loves and the world at large. it's his MO.

so, part of him also understands exactly why jack has made this choice. he might not like it, and if he weren't so desperate right now he'd be on the same page with cas and sam wanting to find another way, but he does understand jack's choice, because it's the exact same choice dean would make if he were in jack's shoes. in fact, it's a choice dean DID make back in s11 when he was going to literally turn himself into a bomb to take out amara and save the world !!!!! he gets it!!!

6x12: in a motel room, Sam sits alone at a table and decides to pray to Castiel. Sam closes his eyes and says, “Castiel, um... I’m back. So, if you got a minute...” He looks around and behind him, slightly disappointed then Castiel appears in front of him. Sam slowly rises out of his chair as Castiel says, “Sam. It’s so good to see you alive.”

6x12, (later in the same scene) Sam is seated, the camera slowly closes in on him as he looks upset by the revelation that he had lost his soul. Sam’s eyes are wet and he struggles to make eye contact, saying, “Right, you mean ‘cause I was walking around with no soul. Really good, Cas. Real good. You know what, I’m– I’m just hazy on a few of the details, though. You think maybe you could... walk me through?” Castiel looks concerned.

9x09: Sam, Castiel, and Dean sit at a table together in a bar, each holding a beer. Castiel looks between them and says, “It is so good being together again. You know, this is my first beer as a human.” He hesitates, then continues, “I hope it’s okay, me joining you?” Sam says, “Why wouldn’t it be okay?” Dean looks at Sam nervously before looking back at Castiel to say, “You know, Cas, are you sure you’re ready?”

9x09: Later, Castiel and Dean are alone at the table, now with several more empty beers in front of them. Castiel looks up at Dean to say, “I, um, I noticed that you look kind of uncomfortable whenever Sam mentions my leaving. Doesn’t he know you told me to leave?” As Dean decides how to respond, Castiel glances at the exit looking worried.

15x05: Sam walks into the map room of the bunker, checking his tablet and packing up to leave for a case. He checks his phone, showing his text log with Castiel, he has sent several unanswered texts. His visible texts to Cas read: [Hey Cass checking in.], [How are you doing? Everything okay?], [Cass call me we need to talk.], [Didn’t realize you were taking off.], [Service sucks in the bunker, want to make sure you’re getting these?], [Call me when you can.], [Want to make sure you’re okay?]

15x16: Sam and Dean are driving in the Impala. Sam looks confused, saying, “Cas just.. bailed, I guess. He didn’t say anything to you about why he left?” Dean is driving and says, “Not really.” Sam continues, “And you guys didn’t get into a fight or something?” Dean shakes his head slightly dismissively, and says, “It’s just Cas being Cas.” Sam looks away from him and says, “Right.” but he looks unconvinced. Dean receives a text message from Castiel that reads [Did you tell Sam yet?]

i dont have all the words for this rn but its always so fascinatig to e how in flashbacks john is always this faceless unknowable figure. like i GET that jdm or matt cohen or even another recast isnt going to come out every time for a flashback but theres soething very interesting the way hes portrayed as just out of reach. he shows up when its the end wen its time to go etc and all we hear is the engine or the honk of the impala and sometimes we see a glimpse of his hands at the wheel but he will Never be present

i've done some looking into that actually (because of this very show) and it seems like there aren't actually set rules about age and what not. i think pretty much everywhere though would consider the amount of time john regularly canonically left them as child neglect

like. agAIN, we're like the only way the fix this problem is someone has to kill themselves for the greater good. we have been down this road so many times. and sometimes, back in olden times, they'd be wrestling with alternatives for a season. but these days, sometimes it's a few episodes of looking for another solution, sometimes it's just accepting it straight away, etc. and it drives me up the fucking wall! but at least cas is out there looking for nebulous alternative options.
