Episode 144 - 7.18 Party On, Garth!

We officially have a Gross of SpnGeorg! wheee!

I sincerely appreciate Garth as a person, and as a friend to Sam and Dean. If anyone could've made them feel even a little bit better about the universe after last week, it was Mr. Fizzles Garth.

I also appreciate the expansion of the supernatural universe, especially through the medium of Beer Brands. We talk about beer in Supernatural having meta relevance (think El Sol, Kingdom, and Schultz, for starters), so the genesis of an entirely new category of beer brands (the trendy independent brewery that makes beers that dean ends up enjoying unironically) is fascinating to me personally. I love anything that expands the spn universe like this!

Also filed under things I love about this episode: Dean gets to be the sober one, and for once in his life, it works against him, especially after a season where his excessive and growing alcohol intake had been a lowkey running theme.

XANDER: I know what you're thinkin'. Can I get by him? Get up the stairs, out of the building, seconds ticking away... I don't love your chances. JACK: Then you'll die, too. XANDER: (raises his eyebrows) Yeah, looks like. So I guess the question really is... who has less fear? JACK: I'm not afraid to die. I'm already dead. XANDER: Yeah, but this is different. Being blowed up isn't walking around and drinking with your buddies dead. It's little bits being swept up by a janitor dead, and I don't think you're ready for that. (Jack tries to leave but Xander blocks him. Xander is calm. Jack is clearly afraid.) JACK: Are you? XANDER: (glances at the bomb, smiles thinly) I like the quiet. (Jack and Xander face off, the bomb timer counts down. Both are taking deep breaths. At the last second Jack caves and deactivates the bomb.) XANDER: Good boy.

hi hello the TNT loop has just personally attacked me, and I need to talk about it. In context of 15.03, I’ve mentioned Cas’s eating Purgatory a few times, and what that directly led to, but I haven’t really talked about it from Cas’s emotional pov. So here it is. Laid bare in 7.17.

When Dean first enlists “Emmanuel’s” help, and explains Sam’s issues, he says some things that Cas... will remember. For years and years to come.

EMMANUEL/CASTIEL: You're angry. DEAN: Well, yeah. Dude broke my brother's head. EMMANUEL/CASTIEL: He betrayed you, this dude. He was your friend? DEAN: Yeah, well, he's gone. EMMANUEL/CASTIEL: Did you kill him? I sense that you kill a lot of people. DEAN: Honestly, I-I-I don't know if he is dead. I just know that this... whole thing couldn't be messier. You know, I used to be able to just shake this stuff off. You know, whatever it was. It might take me some time, but... I always could. What Cas did... I just can't – I don't know why. EMMANUEL/CASTIEL: Well, it doesn't matter why. DEAN: Of course it matters. EMMANUEL/CASTIEL: No. You're not a machine, Dean. You're human. Your friend's name was Cas? That's an odd name.

Dean was able to confess his feelings to “Emmanuel,” but after Cas remembered everything, he would still remember THIS. That this was something Dean couldn’t forgive him for. Then we see him smite the demons as he remembers who he was, through flashbacks to his entire history by Dean Winchester’s side.

DEAN: If you remember, then you know you did the best you could at the time. CASTIEL: Don't defend me. Do you have any idea the death toll in Heaven? On Earth? CASTIEL stops and turns to face DEAN. CASTIEL: We didn't part friends, Dean. DEAN: So what? CASTIEL: I deserved to die. Now, I can't possibly fix it... So why did I even walk out of that river? DEAN: Maybe to fix it. Wait. DEAN opens the trunk of the car and takes out CASTIEL’s trenchcoat. He holds it out to CASTIEL.

So Cas accepts this. He broke everything, but there might be at least ONE thing he can put to rights. He can take Sam’s pain. Dean can’t forgive him anyway, right? So he can give the one thing he has left... his own life (he had no idea that he wouldn’t just be swapping places with Sam here, you know? He thought it was literally a final sacrifice. And he didn’t even pause to explain what he was doing to Dean, or give him a choice, or even attempt to apologize or say goodbye...)

CASTIEL: It's better this way. I'll be fine. SAM flinches. DEAN: Wait, Cas, what are you doing? CASTIEL: Now, Sam... HALLUCIFER: This may hurt. And if I can't tell you again... CASTIEL: ...I'm sorry I ever did this to you.

And once again, just as soon as Dean found him again, Cas is lost to him again. Yes, Sam is fine now, but... Dean is not fine at all...\

And in 7.18:

SAM: So, Cas is the same, then? DEAN: Yeah, down to the drool. SAM: Huh. DEAN: By the way, how is your custard? SAM: It's all right. It's getting better. Just wish it wasn't like the damn tape from "The Ring." I mean, I feel like I'm okay 'cause I passed on the crazy. DEAN: No, you didn't. You heard what Cas said.

So much angst. So much just ~not communicating~ and just taking action the other feels hurt by, over and over again, and forgiving each other over and over without really addressing the underlying hurt. Laying some baggage down because it’s truly in the past is one thing. But some baggage is just... ongoing, and really needs proper unpacking to be finally laid down. And they way they broke up in 15.03? Yeah, that baggage is getting unpacked.
