So the manga that is my current favorite right now is Martial Master Asumi, and I have to say I’ve been waiting a long time for an anime or manga about mixed martial arts. As a life long grappler myself it’s awesome to see wrestling and jiujitsu getting a good amount of spotlight.

But to continue my gushing I absolutely love the characters and how they are written. Nito is such an interesting MC with his dynamic with his brother and grandfather. Grandpa has dementia, but he’s more aware of things when he’s training with him. Meanwhile Nito hates that his brother Kazuro left the family, and he’s trying to fight him in a pro match to get him to see grandpa again. But the reason why he left was clear that grandpa’s dementia was upsetting him that he couldn’t be recognized for his improved skills and he was hurting from the ordeal.

Finally I really like Nao, besides her questionable desire to wrestle with Nito; it looks like she has an actual goal in the story with a rival that’s being setup right now. Honestly it’s refreshing seeing the main female character of a sports manga be a frequent participant in the action.

Anyways highly recommend the manga, and hope we get an anime at some point.

I went on a nostalgia trip and re-read the Eyeshield 21 manga.

Now I'm not the largest sport manga reader but from what I've seen and read Anezaki Mamori is the most useful/relevent manager character in a sport manga. In sport manga (especially shounen) the manager tend to be the only regular female character and they're usually pushed to the side with their only role in-story is to give words of support or maybe provide a romantic subplot. However they have practically no impact on the sport part of the sport manga, meaning their characters come off as useless.

But not Mamori! While she doesn't join the boys on the field Eyeshield 21 makes sure to have her still be relevenat by supporting the team and helping Hiruma gather information. In fact Hiruma uses her in his plans and has her give signs to alert the team of certain plays. An example is in the match against Shinryuji Naga Mamori was the one who realised the Nagas were backing up a bit and then conveyed the information to Hiruma which allowed him to come up with a plan. A lesser story would just have Hiruma notice it himself but the story gave that moment to Mamori. (This helps both the characters as it makes Mamori feel more part of the team and makes Hiruma feel less like a super-person.) Mamori also has her own character arc of stop coddling Sena - learning to stop being over protective. (She also has a subtle romance subplot with Hiruma but it's very much in the background.)

Overall I just like Mamori as a character and I'm a bit sad not more sport manga are using her as an example of manager characters.
