I know I neglected Gellert Grindelwald and Doctor Hannibal Lecter. I am guilty. She here is a story for you guys to dwell on.
It was finally October. You hated Summer 2023. Thanks to global warming and climate change, the air was more tense and uncomfortable. You didn't like snow or ice. You loved autumn and spring best. But this summer was like a desert. It shouldn't be this hot.
You rubbed your aching temples. You needed to lie down. To your surprise, your car got a flat tire as you came out of the store. How did this happen? Did someone do it or did your driving caused you to hit something? You don't remember.
You decided to walk to your college dorm and then call the mechanic. You were about to cross the street when a car almost ran over your foot. You stepped back and gasped in shock. That was close.
You frowned and saw the culprit car roll it's window down.
It was Professor Hannibal Lecter. He was your psychology teacher. You had him last semester
He was mean to you. Always giving you detention and humiliating you in class. A bully.
You gulped in nervousness. Since he had and has so many students, you hoped he will not recognize you. But sadly he did
"Miss Name. Is that you?" He smiled. "I am sorry I almost hit you."
You gave him a tight smile and assured him out of politeness. You kind of hated him for the way he treated you.
"is that your car?" He motioned behind you.
You embarrassedly nodded
"let me drive you."
"my dorm is one block away "
"I want to make up for almost hitting you."
Would accept a ride from a stranger?
You were about to refuse because your guys told you to say no. But it started to rain hard and you were getting soaked.
You gave in defeat.
Your biggest mistake. You never saw your college dorm again.

Hi! Will Percival and Theseus meet again in the future? What's your headcanon on their past? I really enjoyed their friendship during the captivity. Having Percy so broken was heartbreaking. Yet he still looked at Theseus as someone who could save him (it was awful of Grindelwald to mock him for that). It was really validating when he told Newt about the vow after everything. Did the meeting rekindled something between Thes and Percy? I assume that Grindelwald knew about their past when he captured Theseus? What's his view on past and present relationship between Percy and Theseus?
mild spoilers for my fic keep me in mind!
but mostly just Theseus and Percival backstory
.

Hello and thank you for your question!! :D The way they meet is a little convoluted because of the wartime context, so brace yourself for a massive set of paragraphs ahaha.
Yes, they will meet again in the future. Percival comes back into the plot after I finish this arc (which ends with the canon plot of SOD) and start the next one. Until then, he’s essentially in a recovery facility. Then I have quite a few interactions, etc, planned for them, although I’m still building out the subplot that involves Percy for the last bit. If I ever get the numbers or dates weird, it’s on me LOL.
My headcanon on their past! I don’t know how historically accurate it is LOL but here goes. So I write Theseus as having gone to the front a few months after WW1 begins, being one of the first/the first surviving wizard to have broken Evermonde’s decree. A few million British soldiers did survive the entire war from start to finish, even if the average lifespan was quite short, so I imagine Theseus having served the whole way through (age 25-29). So he’d have the “Pip, Squeak, and Wilfred” set of medals.
I then imagine Percival has joined the war roughly at the time America entered, which would be in about 1917, where MACUSA was deliberately sending in higher level officers to essentially monitor the situation, keep a low profile, etc, as Percival is (in my headcanon) about 8 years older than Theseus and consistently a rank higher.
Theseus, like a lot of British soldiers, was deployed to France in 1914. I headcanon he was then reassigned to Ypres, Belgium in around 1916, after the Second Battle of Ypres but before the Battle of Passchendaele. Percival would have landed in 1917, earlier than the majority of American troops, who arrived in 1918 for the German Spring Offensive, because as a Senior Auror he wouldn’t have needed the same training time as civilian troops and was on a slightly different mission anyway.
So they both end being in the field in Belgium at the same time, but in different places. At this point, Theseus has been promoted from private to lance corporal to corporal and is commanding his unit section. Awful things were going on in Belgium at this time, in particular war crimes against civilians, so a lot of effort was targeted there.
I see MACUSA as sending a handful of people in not necessarily as foot soldiers, but more to keep an eye on things, passing through regiments, being more flexible on the Statue and so on, just because I feel like it aligns with US policy at the time, where they partly only entered the war (“belligerency”) to gain a foothold in the later international treaties and debates that’d follow. That and the early American attacks were ineffective and recycled some of the old tactics already used by European forces earlier on, so I could sort of see MACUSA wanting to do some kind of patriotic intervention.
So I imagine that therefore, in early 1917, Theseus is defending a Belgian village/civilians with his platoon. The village is lightly shelled to break the defence and then they’re attacked by the troops from the Central Powers. But the perimeter defence is killed, etc, and Theseus and the others end up having to surrender after a drawn out fight. It’s an incredibly tough fight where most of the Allied troops are killed along with lots of the civilians in proximity.
Therefore, the survivors of the platoon are taken as prisoners of war, including Theseus. As a corporal, Theseus probably wouldn’t have been interrogated for intelligence because there’d be the officer and sergeant ranking above him. But he uses magic during the fight to try and protect fellow soldiers and the Belgian civilians, a few things that aren’t really dramatic or noticeable (I don’t think he’d have had the power or reserves) but enough that the captors note this strange phenomenon.
Once Theseus is in the POW camp, Percival, who’s kind of bouncing around units/faking his death, etc, is in the area and senses a magical signature. Theseus gets interrogated a bit but has no special intelligence. Percival observes this and considers leaving him (in theory, the POW camps weren’t a death sentence, but they were pretty awful regardless) to continue his mission, but then after a few days of observation, Theseus is pushed to the point of doing accidental magic. So Percival has to just get him out ASAP as damage cleanup to avoid the Statue getting absolutely destroyed (although Theseus has already broken the Statue a load of times, especially in some of the earlier gas attacks, but this could get high level quite quickly in a POW camp vs on the chaotic battlefield).
Percival then breaks in and helps Theseus escape. But they’re caught and have to full-on apparate out as they’re about to be executed. That’s the incident they talk about in one of the earlier chapters where it was right down to the wire in terms of getting shot by a rifle LOL. Percival is “fresher” and a bit more skilled than Theseus, who’s been essentially living as a Muggle for a few years with rusty magic, so they fake new identities and join another unit. This is Percival’s first taste of being in the trenches for a long period of time and having to act fully like a Muggle. This goes on for a few more months where they’re actually fighting side by side until Percival gets an owl. Which is for the more senior Americans (which he is as a Senior Auror) out in the field to regroup in Ukraine, because the British Ministry has started a programme on the Eastern Front involving dragons.
I’ll be honest here, I can’t remember if I wrote that Theseus manages to get home and briefly report back to the Ministry or goes straight there with Percival (so please forgive the inconsistency on this, as I think I wrote Newt as believing Theseus “followed” him to the eastern front but it wasn’t quite as deliberate as that haha). They travel with magic, some help from other agents, etc. Percival has got a solid rep at MACUSA so they’re keen to get him there safe for his excellent leadership skills. Of course, when Theseus rocks up, Newt’s there too. Which gobsmacks Theseus but also is classic Newt ahaha.
From there until a month before the end of the war, the three of them are there. Percival and Newt both go back as soon as the programme fails (Percival because he’s extracted, Newt because he’s devastated/furious at the Ministry killing the dragons) and Theseus does clean up for that last month. Hence Newt having to pick him up when he goes back on a conventional troop carrier, as the Ministry doesn’t want to expose any of the wizards among the Muggle troops.
I headcanon that they become friends at first and then the spark grows until in Ukraine, where they do become lovers (and have a physical relationship LOL). It’s kind of a situational thing but the attraction is quite deep and they’ve been through a lot together. Then, after the war, it’s easy for Theseus to find Percival, and they start a sort of relationship again.
It lasts barely two months and devolves into hookups as the two get busier and busier with work and generally more distant in different continents. They end up going back to friends because it’s clear it doesn’t quite work for either of them. They’re not quite long term compatible, they decide, just personality-wise, with Percival being the more decisive in breaking it off. And then in about two years, Theseus meets Leta, by which point they’re colleagues with no trace of the old feelings.
Haha, that was so long. I didn’t manage to get it smoothly into the captivity part of the story because there wasn’t much pacing leeway unless I did a massive flashback, but once more, your excellent question has made me realise it’s got to get written in somewhere rather than just floating around in my head LOL. Or maybe I do it as a linked one shot. In a way, it’s kind of fate, because Percy saved Theseus and then Theseus saved Percy :D
I wouldn’t say it necessarily rekindled something in a significant sense. It definitely helped them both, just because Percival was so touch and affection starved for something from a normal person (sorry, Grindelwald) that he was just instantly hit with the feels, but Theseus is also still being eaten alive by his grief over Leta. So there’s a bit of that intimate spark from surviving something awful together there which almost straddles any kind of relationship description, whether it’s friends, lovers, etc. Sort of like they might be happy to experiment again in the future, and definitely are desperate to see one another again as friends if nothing else, but probably don’t imagine a long term romantic relationship together.
As Grindelwald knew basically everything about Percival’s life, he did know, as you’ve said :) I honestly think he didn’t care that much about the past relationship, to the extent where he’s like “Ohh, the Auror from Paris is the same man from Belgium?? Ohhh, I forgot.” He doesn’t massively approve of the war and might see it as being born of violence, being too physical, etc, but I don’t think he’d really be too bothered about it. The present one annoyed him because he could tell it was making Percival less loyal. I don’t know if Grindelwald romantically loves Percival so much as he loves him like an object (not like Vinda, with some more genuine feeling, but there’s only space in his heart for Albus).
I think he could even consider a relationship between Theseus and Percival, if it ever happened (I’m not writing them as endgame, but might play with the boundaries between friends and friends with something extra a little) as useful in some form, as it gets the targets together. He might feel a bit bad for Percival though, given how much he hates Theseus for tricking him, in Grindelwald logic LOL.
I hope this all makes sense :)

💝💌
thank you for the ask, pal!
[writing ask game here]
💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?
the velveteen rabbit. i had underestimated how many haters the system of institutionalised childcare has in the harry potter fandom. as it should.
💌 share something with us about an up-and-coming work that has you excited!
do you like albus dumbledore?
do you like lord voldemort?
do you like dumbledore living? do you like voldemort being sent to azkaban because harry flops in the final confrontation? do you like dumbledore having some sort of thing for imprisoned mass murderers?
do you like a story with this as an extract?
Gellert was robust; a creature made strong and broad by Carpathian air and spring water, his back corded with muscles and his hands square and firm. Gellert was golden, a child of the forge and the lathe, a milk-and-honey boy with bright blue eyes and cheeks of burnished amber. Tom was none of those things. He was consumptive, brittle. Always a little too pale and a little too thin, with friable nerves and poisoner’s fingers. He would sit behind his desk and glower at me with his fathomless eyes, a smudge of black ink in a classroom filled by the rich and healthy - pink-cheeked and soft-bodied - and the bones of his face were like razors, as beautiful as they were deadly. The tendons in his wrist would flex, bird-like, whenever he moved his wand. His robes were secondhand, they were too short in the cuffs. The gin-soaked woman who attended to the orphanage had rattled off a list of ailments to me - as she herded me from her dominion after I had met him for the first time and been terrified - that he seemed to have been lucky not to have been finished off by. Influenza, scarlet fever, bronchitis, pneumonia. I ought to have told her that there was nothing she could have done. Snakes have an inherent loathing of the cold, his sickliness was genetic. I ought to have told the staff at Hogwarts this too, ought to have told the elves to stoke the fires in the dungeons high and lay an extra blanket on his bed. He was poorly-suited to the glacial damp of winter at Hogwarts. He was often ill, often absent from my classes with chills and wheezes. He still topped the year in every exam. He is still ignoring me, glaring out of the cell window, red eyes narrowed against the spray which dances from the sea. Azkaban cannot be doing him any favours, now that he is mortal once more. There is a veneer of damp clinging to his robes, tiny flecks of salt beginning to crust at the hems. There are chilblains on his skeletal fingers. I am not sorry that we allow him to live like this. But I am not triumphant either. ‘Tom -’ ‘That is not my name.’ ‘I will ask the Wizengamot to do something about the damp in here.’ ‘I have no objection to the damp.’ His voice sounds huskier than I remember even as he says this. It has lost a little of its effete malice. He must have a cold. ‘You won’t hold that opinion when you develop pneumonia,’ I say to him, a school-teacher’s admonition in my tone. ‘I have survived pneumonia before.’ ‘You should -’ ‘I have no desire to waste my time on hypothetical misery, Dumbledore. I am focused on the here-and-now.’ He turns to look at me. ‘I am still alive. That is all that matters.’ And this, this is why I told Harry we could not risk imprisoning him. Because there is a fire in his gaze, a fire which fever will only make worse, driving him to take, to fight, to survive. ‘I am alive,’ he says again, stepping towards me. ‘Which means you lost. Your precious little soldier could not bring himself to do the one thing you have trained him for since birth.’ He draws even closer. ‘I am not Grindelwald, Dumbledore,’ he croons, ‘content to stay put forever, dreaming of your caresses. This is not Nurmengard. The walls of Azkaban will not contain Lord Voldemort for long.’ He cannot know that Gellert once said much the same thing. I will not stay locked up here, Albus. I will escape. And my affections for you will mean nothing when I burn Britain to the ground. Nurmengard cannot hold Gellert Grindelwald. All that is stopping me from escaping right now is that I cannot think of a suitable way to kill you. ‘The only thing that hinders me is an inability to decide how I am going to kill you.’ He is irritated by the laugh which escapes me. I can picture quite clearly the way his nose would twitch, if he still had one, as it always used to when he was told off. Gellert was the same. Gellert was always the same… It is that, I will tell myself later. It is the fact that he is, both in that moment and forever, so exactly like Gellert, that causes me to forget myself. And to kiss him.
then you should watch this space!

I was wondering what Dumbledore's role as chief warlock of the wizegamot means in this universe?
ok the short boring answer is that i forgot that was a thing 😬
the LONG MORE INTERESTING answer is going to be me talking through how i can retcon that - which i absolutely can because we haven't really gotten into wizengamot politics in ttdl yet!!! so the only people who will know that i totally forgot will be the people who see this post afhslgkshkgjskhldjfs
SO. my immediate thought with 'chief warlock' is that dumbledore is kind of a master of ceremonies. he's not a wizengamot lord - his job is to introduce bills, hold the votes, and all sorts of things like that which are mainly ceremonial/logistic but in the hands of someone particularly motivated CAN be political tools. once again taking inspiration from the united states congress because i know how that works and i don't know how other governments work, dumbledore can control what order bills get introduced in, whether they get introduced in the first place, etc.
now, there's definitely a failsafe. the wizengamot would not stand for some plebeian controlling what they get to vote on. so if they can get together a critical mass of lords, they can force through a vote even if dumbledore doesn't want to introduce the bill. it means there's a tug of war between dumbledore and the dark lords for power
next question: how did dumbledore BECOME the chief warlock? my guess is that it's an appointed position by the minister of magic. at the moment, that's harold minchum, i believe, soon to be replaced by millicent bagnold (probably as the war gets worse). idk when exactly that will happen, i'll figure out a moment that works with the plot
dumbledore's been chief warlock for a WHILE, though. minchum reappointed him because he's functionally an institution. once he defeated grindelwald, plenty of people were calling for him to run for minister - he didn't do that because he's smarter than that, but he did accept the position of chief warlock when it was offered to him several years later, and that's a big part of how he stays in the public eye. (i think he probably also writes op-eds whenever there's something Sufficiently Important to write about)
in atfhv, wizengamot sessions happen twice a year, in fall and spring, and they run for exactly 2 months each (march 7 to may 7, september 7 to november 7). in that time, dumbledore's quite busy, seeing as he has that AND a school to run. plus a war to fight.
and that means that orion knows dumbledore PERSONALLY. as does pretty much the whole wizengamot, and not just because they were students when dumbledore was a professor
which now makes me really want to have orion do a take your child to work day in which regulus casually shows up to a wizengamot session and stares dumbledore down the entire time. the dark lords are pleased with this behavior. he clearly knows who the enemy is

If - only for the sake of argument - Grindewald would suddenly become an incredible fantastic morally light & good person (and wouldnt go to prison, absolved like in FB3); how would Albus deal with this? Albus' feelings for Gellert are even now still there, its his moral integrity and makes him walk away and even go against Grindelwald. Albus would naturally always feel guilty about Ariana, but if he would be confronted with a Grindelwald that actually is the man he couldve always hoped for, do you think his resolve would eventually crumble?
I don't think that Albus ever blamed Gellert for Ariana. The deal-breaker was his plans of harming an entire population and Aberforth's torture to an extent. If we put Aberforth and Albus' accounts next to one another Albus' mention of Gellert losing control and the terrible parts that he ignored springing into being, it corresponds to Aberdorth's mention of Gellert using the cruciatus curse on him. This was being a conscious choise, would be harder to forgive than Ariana's death which was the result of the overall circumstance.
When Albus talks about Gellert's departure he says that he flead, as anyone but him could have guessed, leaving him to deal with his grief alone. It goes to show that even then he did not expect that Gellert would leave him and wanted him there despite what happened. He was ready to forgive back then.
He was also willing to look past Gellert's experiments at Durmstrang when he thought that Gellert was trying to do better: "And from this it follows that where we meet resistance, we must use only the force that is necessary and no more. (This was your mistake at Durmstrang! But I do not complain, because if you had not been expelled, we would never have met.)"
Gellert's attrocities probably got completely out of handle during the Global Wizarding War, and there are limits to the mistakes one can look past. But I think that if he had a genuine change of heart at any time pre-Fantastic Beasts 4, Albus would have eventually taken him back.

2022 Fic Roundup
In the later half of this year, I came back to two foundational parts of myself. Writing fanfiction, and Harry Potter. I've built a career in creative writing, and somewhere along the line lost sight of the spark of joy that comes from writing transformative works. After a difficult summer, I rediscovered that spark. And for the longest time, in light of *all that*, I hadn't known what to do with Potter and its core place in my development as a conscientious person in the world. In the same dark moment I realized that, like all foundational sacred text, the series was meant to be grappled with. Wrestled. Read resistantly. And what better way to do that than with fic? I've only been back in the game since October, but I'm so happy to have made it back at all. More than anything, I appreciate the incredible community I've found along the way.
Huge shout-out to @soloorganaas for the inspiration!
October
marginalia (105k & counting, WIP, Wolfstar, E) - This story began a long time ago. That part is already written. Nothing can be done about it now. It began with two young men—barely more than boys—who upended the world, magical and mundane alike. Grindelwald and Dumbledore, glorious leaders of the revolution, who brought wizardkind out of hiding and into the light during those last, violent days of 1899. But a winter's night seventy-seven years later is where things really kick off. Because Remus Lupin knows what to expect when you’ve been sold somewhere new. He knows it better than he ever thought he'd have to by this point. He knows how to survive. And Sirius Black is doing his best to just graduate Hogwarts and get himself and his brother away from this goddamn house in one piece. He's got it figured out by now. He has a plan. Neither of them, however, had accounted for the other messing everything up by the sheer fact of just existing. The most AU.
There’s an exceptionally long moment of silence between them, and Sirius would look away if he could. Would put the burning shame simmering at the pit of his gut somewhere else, only Remus’ hand is still clasped tight around his own bleeding nailbeds, holding fast, and isn’t that a wonder? His hands are just as strong, just as calloused and scarred and warm as he remembers. Only this is the first time Remus has ever touched him willingly. With purpose. Not because he thinks he has to, or because Sirius touched him first.
love has teeth (444, microfic, gen, T) - Hope Lupin loves her husband, she really does, but she’s a child of the war and the political passions that came with it and on the whole she really hasn’t got the time nor patience for the astounding ignorance and stupidity of Wizarding Britain. (Or how, somewhere along the way, Hope Lupin became the pack mum.)
Hope teaches James to cook, and gives Peter advice on girls, and becomes single-handedly responsible for Sirius’ obsession with motorbikes after letting him ride on the back of hers. She introduces the lot of them to jazz and skiffle and tells them stories of growing up with Communist parents in post-war London.
civilian (339, microfic, Tedromeda, T) - They figure it out at a café on a rainy Tuesday in April. (Or, the one where Ted and Andromeda elope.)
Theirs is a history of secrets, stolen kisses in old school corridors and excuses made to his family why she can never seem to come for dinner and trying not to flinch whenever words like purity and mudblood come out of her parents' mouths.
November
until our ribs get tough (4.8K, gen, M) - From the lost papers and mixed-up files of the marginalia universe. A day in the life of one Lily Evans, age eleven, takes an unexpected turn involving a twisted ankle, some contraband essence of murtlap, and a rumination on the nature of miracles. Same AU as marginalia.
They used to do this all the time when they were little. Hide amidst the mothballs and piled boxes stored beneath the metal springs, especially when the rain poured down like this. It was easier, then, to ignore the world outside in order to create their own. Imagined kingdoms where they were king and queen, or adventurers on the high seas searching out treasure galleys to attack. They’d known to keep quiet, even then. It’s been a minute since they were here last, but even Remus’ recent growth spurts aren’t enough to take away what’s really a sacred space.
December
the helper (1.3K, gen Wolfstar, T) - Remus is facing his first Hanuká away from home. Sirius would like to help. For Hanukkah Wolfstar Week 2022.
Sirius is, by this point, extremely lost. He understands about half of what his friend just said to him. What he understands perfectly well, however, is how to recognize that nonchalant sort of half-shrug, that casual way Remus then goes on to insist that it’s not actually a big deal and he’s fine, really, and it’s not that important a celebration, anyway. He knows what those things mean. They mean that Remus Lupin’s a bloody liar.
death by honey (1.7K, Wolfstar, T) - Stuck at St. Mungo's during Hanuká, Remus has resigned himself to spending the holidays alone. Sirius has other plans. For Hanukkah Wolfstar Week 2022.
So he’s resigned himself to missing all that. Resigned himself to maybe even missing his muggle relatives altogether if this lunar fever doesn’t clear up in time. Instead, he gets the sterile, broken-tiled lycanthropy ward, and tinny Christmas music filtering down from the floor above, and the pinch-faced, suspicious company of two trainee healers who must have done something truly unfortunate to end up banished down here over the holidays. What he doesn’t expect is to wake up from a nap to find Sirius Black sitting in the chair next to his bed.
forward motion (854, Wolfstar AU, M) - Mary brings over a present. None of the menfolk know what to do with it. Wolfstar raises Harry AU. For Hanukkah Wolfstar Week 2022.
So maybe it feels more personal than it should, but Sirius can’t shake that terror of mucking this all up and letting down not just Harry but James and Lily and Monty and Euphemia, too. And Remus — who still has two living parents who love him dearly — may never have had to depend on the Potters to pick the broken pieces of himself up off their doorway, but he still feels that same terror. That same responsibility. Harry deserves a childhood full of laughter and love and fun.
commercial allure (1K, Wolfstar, T) - On the second-to-last night of Hanuká, Remus decides that enough is enough. Sirius would beg to differ. For Hanukkah Wolfstar Week 2022.
“Pads,” he says at last, because he wasn’t going to say anything. Because this is his best mate of six years but somehow it’s become damn near impossible for Remus to even look at him lately without feeling flushed and awkward and like he’s just sprouted hands for the very first time and hasn’t got the first clue what to do with them. But he’s just found a very nice and very expensive-looking eagle-feather quill on his bedside table, wrapped up in silver paper, and that is altogether impossible to ignore.
a history of violence (1K, Wolfstar, E) - In the wake of the war's end, Remus and Sirius are learning how to trust each other again. Lily and James live AU. For Hanukkah Wolfstar Week 2022.
Sirius kisses the scar that slashes down his brow and lid, a gentle reminder to keep talking. This is what they do now, in the days since the end of October. Since the end of the war. This is what they have to do. Secrets, after all, nearly cost them everything.
pomegranates (2.5K, Wolfstar, M) - Sirius runs away from home over the winter holidays of fifth year. The problem is, James is in India and Moony kind of hates her right now. Genderfuck AU with transfem Sirius and cisfem Remus. For Hanukkah Wolfstar Week 2022.
Lyall Lupin opens the front door of the small Mayhill flat he shares with his wife and daughter to find Sirius Black, cold and dripping in the rainy Swansea night, shivering violently in nothing but a set of outrageously expensive silk dress robes. His first instinct is to slam the door in the girl’s face. His second — that of a father, who’s seen his child in pain too many times — wins out. Sirius is bleeding from somewhere just above her hairline and looks as though she’s been on the receiving end of a Confundus Charm. He lets her inside.
the story goes (1.5K, Wolfstar, M) - Remus knows all about survival. It's in his DNA. A study on lycanthropy, the Jewish diaspora, a blended family, and two boys in love. For Hanukkah Wolfstar Week 2022.
No one can know. Dad reminds him of that all the time, in the summer before he goes to school. He needn’t bother. Remus was raised on stories of refugee ancestors fleeing Valencia massacres for Moroccan shores, grew tall on days celebrating Esther and Yehudit’s necessary deceptions. He knows how to hide what others fear without making a single part of himself small.
yours if you want it (1K, Wolfstar, M) - Facing their first holiday season living together, Sirius and Remus stumble towards creating new traditions. For Hanukkah Wolfstar Week 2022.
“I’m trying to tell you you're allowed to have things, you knob. You get to make it mean what you like. You want a Christmas tree? Let’s get a bloody Christmas tree. I’ve never had one before but sod it, I want one if it makes you happy. We’re allowed to make our own traditions. And if you like any of the poncy Yule shite you grew up with instead, we can do that, too. Because that’s still yours, if you want it. Get me? Not theirs. Yours.”

Gellert Grindelwald pretended to be oblivious to the whispers and murmurs coursing through Hogwarts’s Great Hall as he strode towards the ancient Goblet of Fire, to the eyes boring into his back, greedy for a spectacle and the illusion of power they were hoping to taste.
Granted, at least half of the students eligible for the Triwizard Tournament were prudent enough not to place their name in the Goblet of Fire and risk their life for a hollow title, yet it was clear none of them carried the mere potential to challenge the status quo after additional years of honing their magic and mind.
They were not driven by ambitions grand enough to be deemed in need of a harsh lesson in humility, and the justified fear of the weak had always been appreciated as an amplifier for the propaganda designed to keep their more powerful brothers and sisters in line.
The chains crafted from ties of blood and potent emotions were often sturdier than those of iron or steel: Neither the Incarcerous nor the Fulgari charm could restrain a heart determined to embark on a path of self-destruction once the one in whose chest it was beating had been fooled into disregarding the grand picture and focusing exclusively on the obstacles and goals that lay right before his feet.
For that reason, no matter what had dissuaded those students from vying for the opportunity to participate as their school’s champion, not a single one of them would return to their family at the end of the school year unmarked by the glorious and grotesque farce they were about to witness, especially once Gellert succeeded in exposing the Triwizard Tournament at such.
Placing the slip of parchment with his name in the Goblet of Fire with a confident grace bordering on irreverence, Gellert turned on his heel and winked at a physically attractive witch from Beauxbatons he had quickly recognized as the most influential among the social leaders of Durmstrang’s rival school.
His lips curved up in a mischievous smile when the witch blushed and her eyes glazed over with bashful coquetry.
Then, he returned to his peers from Durmstrang, proceeding to jest with the wizards who admired and those who envied him alike without sparing her a second glance.
***
Despite the at times excessive comforts Hogwarts appeared to be offering to its students and guests in such abundance, finding a location suitable for fulfilling his need for privacy turned out to be a nerve-gratingly challenging endeavor.
Even at night, ghosts were wandering the old castle, some of them tattling on the students violating curfew in their presence either out of boredom or a hypocritical sense of moral obligation.
Worse, the countless portraits adorning the hallways, too, had a penchant for noisiness and gossip.
Although Gellert’s Disillusion charm was impeccable and he could have easily stunned and obliviated any undesired witness of his nightly exploits just the same, he wasn’t so foolish as to lower his guard before he had familiarized himself with the new territory to a sufficient degree.
He wouldn’t resume his research nor deliberately trigger a vision just yet, at least not for another few days.
The act of breaking into the Astronomy Tower and exploring Hogwarts’s highest vantage point, however, was no direct violation of Gellert’s strategy for his stay in Britain.
More importantly, Gellert Grindelwald refused to remain separated from the magnificent night sky for a moment longer than necessary, hence there was a merry spring in his step as he approached the entrance to the tower and ascended spiral staircase after having unlocked the door and locked it behind him once more with a swift nonverbal spell.
Careful to make no noise that would give him away in spite of the Disillusionment Charm cast on his form, he was forced to suppress an amused snicker as his ears picked up on the soft breathing of another individual refusing to be locked up in his dorm.
Perhaps, the ghosts frequenting the Astronomy Tower, if there were any in the first place, weren’t so talkative after all.
Drinking in the chilly revitalizing night air, Gellert waited for his oblivious pursuer to catch up to him at the top of the tower before dispelling his Disillusionment Charm wandlessly and nonverbally.
“Good evening, fellow rule-breaker,” Gellert addressed the invisible person with a merry smile. “I’m pleased to encounter a kindred spirit here. Someone sharing my distaste for nonsensical curfews without being careless enough to be caught violating them. May I see your face as well?”

What are your thoughts on a Harry Potter AU with Norse Mythology?
Thanks for the ask!
I wish I have more of an articulate answer for this ask, but I actually don't know that much about Norse mythology. I should, given that my OTP is Thorki, and a lot of fics and art take inspiration from Norse myths (Loki's gaggle of children, his lips being sewn shut, Baldr showing up as the third brother and his tragic death, etc).
But for HP and adaptations? Or any of my fandoms being adapted with Greek/Norse/Chinese/Japanese myths/folklore or with any TV series/comics/films/etc? I am all for it.
How would the tragedy of Baldr work within the HP universe? Can it be used in telling a tragedy of the Black sisters? Or even the Peverells? Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters children -- how an outside force, maybe Albus Dumbledore or Gellert Grindelwald, take Voldemort's offsprings for his own nefarious purposes, saying that Voldemort's children are an abomination? Sybill Trelawney's lips being sewn shut so she couldn't give voice to what would soon become?
I can think of many fairytales inspired fics ( a forest, dark and deep ; Red as Blood; head full of doubt; The Detective's Ballet, Snowblind), fics inspired by films/TV & books (Sudden Light; All Heaven's Glory; Strong at the Broken Places, The Curse of Anteros), fics inspired by plays (Severus Snape and the Ghostwritten Romance; The Taming of the Shrew) and Greek myths (A Strange Fate; The Fall of Spring; Requiem At Dusk) ***all linked fics are Snarry. But, so far, I can't think of any specifically Norse inspired fic.
There are common threads in adaptations, I noticed. Fairytales are popular. Western media is another. Greek myths are more widely known and used compared to other myths and folklores. I've even written my fair share - a Sleeping Beauty/Snow White fusion, a short Princess and a Pea drabble. So far no Greek myth inspired fic, but I've written an Old Guard (film) inspired fic and a fic inspired by the film Before Sunrise. And I'm itching to write more fairytale inspired fics. I was talking with @danpuff-ao3 and others about wanting a Snarry version of Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid - the one where in the end the mermaid turns into sea foam.
But, I also have desires to see non-Western media influenced HP adaptations. I've written a Mushishi (anime) Snarry fic for Snape Bang, and I have thoughts about a Snarry version of Your Name (anime film) and a very vague idea of a Snape's centric Poco's Udon World (anime) fic. I like exploration of other cultures and other forms of magic. We are all not a singular human being with singular experiences.
Or maybe there are more non-Western adaptations in the HP fandom than I realized. This fandom is so big and so varied and I only just ventured out of my Snarry bubble.
But back to the original ask. I would LOVE to see a HP AU with Norse mythology. Who is Loki and who is Thor? Odin or Frigga? Hel and Balder? Which myth to adapt? Is seidr its own magic or an extension of wizarding magic?
Thoughts to consider and a whole new playground to play in.

The first time I met Mattheo Marvelo Riddle, he was sitting in the dining hall. It was a cold spring night and so the fire was mulling, bits of smoke rising from greying coal.
The air smelt of burnt firewood and amber ale which was our new word for Butterbeer. “I know what Butterbeer is, they used to have this back in the 12th century. It’s Amber Ale,” Amos Weasley said, the current know-it-all of Grindelwald.
It had rained before bed and then went blistering, and so rain had frozen against the window and was melting again. Me and Amos bumbled down into the cafeteria and had sat down at a table where Mattheo also was. Amos had almost sat onto his lap practically and hadn’t seen him there. Then moved over one seat, not thinking at all that he might’ve been expecting company.
He had a cut over his nose like he’d just gotten into a fight. And was peeling an orange with a knife.
“Did you apparate? I didn’t even see you there.” Amos said.
“Don’t miss much do you, Weasley?” He asked. He winked at me. And I’d never hung out with him before but I knew of him. He was really popular and very friendly often caught laughing down halls with literally everyone in class. He was the son of Tom Riddle, I heard, the guy that became he-who-must-not-be-named. And I was still trying to get a read on him was he bad or good?
I had an opinion on everybody here already that they weren’t the right sort but found myself to be surprised to like even the darkest of wizards.
“O-o, I know you. How’s your father doing these days?” Amos said.
“Not Very Well, considering he’s dead. Due to your pal, Harry or something or the other,” said Tom Riddle.
“No hard feelings, I presume,” said Amos.
Mattheo grinned in my direction.
“How’d you get that cut?” I asked.
He fingered his nose as if he’d forgotten it was there.
“Oh yeah, picked a fight with Jordan Bailey. Stepped on his shoes on purpose, when he confronted him about it, he said fuck off and pummeled him into the ground,” Amos said, laughing lightly.
I undid my scarf. It was no longer scarf season but I was feeling very cold right when I’d woken up and now the wilting fire had begun to warm my cheeks.
I remembered Jordan Bailey, during lunch yesterday a girl whispered to me that he had a crush on me. And I felt embarrassed. He wasn’t a bad looking guy but I just wasn’t feeling him at all in any sort of way.
Mattheo did get visibly upset when she had said that and I wondered why. And now the fight? I hadn’t previously noticed him at all before then. Other than the first day of school when it was mentioned who he was, I looked at him with a bit of awe and fear. And he noticed the negative attention and looked back at me with curiosity before I turned away.
“How are you feeling?” He asked me leaning forward onto his arms on the table, “Sleepy, tired, hungry?”
“Sleepy,” I said, rubbing my own arms to warm myself up.
“I’ve got just the remedy for that,” he said got up to get me a coffee. He brought it over with two creams and sugars sitting in the saucer, setting it gingerly down in front of me.
“I wasn’t sure how you liked it,” he said, then looked impressed when I drunk it black. And he drunk his black also. And his put his two sugars to the side.
“I’ll take one too, two sugars, one cream,” Amos said.
“Are your legs broken?” Mattheo asked.
“Right,” Amos said and got up to get his own.

heyyy pls can you elaborate on the sacred 28 being established/codified at the onset of the eugenics period? (you mentioned it yesterday and now i'm v curious abt it lmao)
(got another ask about this - anon i saw it, here you go!)
SO. this hit me in the middle of a lecture and i was not in a situation to pull out my laptop and start duckduckgoing, and i also have basically never checked my memory against hp canon ever, so this is all courtesy of birl's brain, BUT. i think there's a connection here worth exploring
from what i remember, the list of The Sacred Twenty-Eight was created by some dude named cantankerous nott, who excluded the potters from the list due to some quibble, and it was RECENT. like, 1920s recent. i don't remember the exact year so i'm calling it 1928 because why not. before this point, pureblood high society was a little more permeable - people with a new shitload of money (thanks industrial revolution) were able to sort of muscle their way in due to aforementioned shitloads of money, and there was less of a clear distinction between The Old Families and The New But Respectable Families. like, there was a *distinction,* but it was similar to the current distinction between the anciente families and the noble families in the sacred 28 - we're different, some of us are Better™, but we're both the Good Sort™.
so, 1928. hold that number in your head, because making a list of Twenty-Eight Sacred Families Who Are Super Important And Amazing did not spring out of cantankerous nott's head fully formed. like, that shit had to be researched and decided by someone. who was good enough to be on the list? and why was cantankerous nott in charge, anyway?
here is my argument: by the time that the list was made, the only real surprise was that the potters weren't on it.
the eugenics movement began in the late 19th century - the term was coined in 1883 by sir francis galton, a british guy. this is fact this isn't from my brain. i mean it is but i looked it up first. by the time the 20th century hit, eugenics were an established Thing in britain (not just in britain, but we're keeping a narrow focus here)
what eugenics cares a LOT about is 'breeding.' encouraging the Right Sort of people with certain Desirable Qualities to have a bunch of kids, and discouraging the Wrong Sort of people with Undesirable Qualities from doing so. that's obviously incredibly morally questionable and gets into really quite a lot of human rights abuses, which is not the point of this post so i'm going to move on. but the point is - if the Right Sort of people procreate, and the Wrong Sort don't, then eventually the Wrong Sort will all die off and society will be only composed of the Right Sort and everything will be better
now, this doesn't *perfectly* fit in with the blood purity mindset IN BRITAIN - blood purists know that muggleborns will just keep appearing (barring some very shady experimentation to figure out how to Stop them from appearing, see ttdl chapter 51 near the end, but even that's more about taking away their magic and less about preventing muggleborns from ever *being* born)
but! brief diversion into continental europe and grindelwald here - what's the way to stop muggleborns from ever being born again? kill all the muggles. okay diversion done. WAIT NO I'M NOT DONE ACTUALLY ONE MORE THOUGHT - voldemort plays into that rhetoric by having the death eaters kidnap and murder muggles, but he doesn't state it as his all-out goal because a) it's not, and b) that's a great way to unite *multiple* countries who are all working to bring you down. after grindelwald, voldemort looks... well, not great, but only moderately genocidal, so he's britain's problem as far as the rest of the world is concerned, unless things get worse/change
okay NOW the diversion is done. BACK TO EUGENICS. i said in this post that some muggle culture things do creep into magical britain relatively quickly - philosophy does, and so as a result, i think the eugenics mindset does too. big focus on purity, saving your society from degradation, that's going to appeal to a lot of the more insular families
so! eugenics, the term, coined 1883. the sacred 28 codified 1928. that gives us 45 years in the middle for eugenics to seep into magical britain, take root in the upper classes, convince them their culture will Backslide and become Depraved unless they Do Something, and there's nobody actually whipping them into a frenzy here (seeing as grindelwald is, again, focused on the continent, and also his rise is around the same time as that codification in the first place) so really what happens is that this mindset becomes normalized. they're not being *violent* about it, they're being perfectly civilized, and therefore there is no problem
but the thing about encouraging the Right Sort to reproduce is that you have to know who they are! and so i think the increased social mobility of the industrial revolution starts to decline again here. a handful of families got into the wizengamot via money, but now the old families are growing concerned. they can't just be letting *any* ruffian with money into the wizengamot or their high society events, after all. they have Manners and they have Class and being one of them is about *more* than just having a wizengamot seat - it's about who they are.
high society begins to re-stratify, starting around the turn of the century. if you managed to nab a wizengamot seat recently, you can stay, but you'd better brush up on your deportment because you are on THIN ICE. and things get more exclusive - people start weeding out Certain Others from their guest lists, and so on. if you can still wrangle an invite to the rosiers' summer solstice ball, you're *respectable,* but that's the biggest event of the season - everything else has smaller, more curated guest lists. (well, the rosiers' guest list is definitely curated, but like, it's BIG.)
so the group that *becomes* the Sacred Twenty-Eight (And Also The Potters) have already become cliquey before that list is actually created. cantankerous nott has some grudging, baseline respect for the weasleys, for their tenacity in not dying out if nothing else, and they do have proof of their existence centuries ago because that was when everyone else started to hate them and it's very well-documented, so fine, cantankerous nott adds them to the list to be the designated losers so the rest of the group doesn't start turning on each other looking for targets.
and thus, the list of the sacred 28 is really a delineation of what everyone already kind of knows - it's just that it wasn't spelled out so explicitly before. but that group probably wouldn't have been as tight-knit as it is if not for the eugenics movement
(i also figure that the eugenics movement drove people to reduce their pools of marriage options, constraining the eligible people by quite a bit - earlier in the 19th century, they were somewhat more chill about marrying people who weren't aristocratic, as long as they could adapt well and fit into the aristocracy. i say 'somewhat' because, like, there was still definitely an element of judgment involved, it just was less extreme. so eugenics also contributed to the rise of inbreeding in the magical aristocracy)
as for why cantankerous nott was in charge, it was probably his idea, and many of the other aristocratic families Loved the idea of having this very distinct line creating an Us and a Them, and so they let him go ahead with it, with checking in about what exactly he was thinking and how many families he would include and what the criteria were anyway and--
