All around me, stars twinkle
They cradle my vessel, keeping me warm.
I cannot reach out to them,
as they do to me,
But they are my friends,
Nevertheless.
And as the stars shine,
Expecting no return in gratitude,
My people do not require anything of me
I will make everybody proud
And I have lived a good life.
Even it be a short one,
I have lived a good life.
This is the first waka (和歌) I have ever written, having read so many. I wrote this out of a need to figure out my feelings, after learning about Laika and her story for the first time. Here is, to my best efforts, a rough English translation, with a few translator's notes:
The sleeping dog
even in the river of heaven¹
Swims playfully
I wonder if she knows [about]
the moon in the sleeves² of all time³
1) lit. 'river of heaven' - milky way as visible in the night sky, esp. over autumn in Japan
2) this is a really weird expression but basically. sleeves are consistently a thing used for 1.) sleeping on, 2.) crying into in classical japanese poetry. so people cry into their sleeve. and thus an expression meaning like, a frozen sleeve became a thing, meaning that someone had been crying a bunch and also that it is cold, because they cried into the sleeve and the tears froze. this *then* lead to the expression of the moon (or moonlight) in one's sleeve, meaning that the moon is reflecting off the frozen sleeve. so basically it means one has been crying on a very cold night
3) This 世 has a sense of 'the past, present, and future each.'
4) Dog, to sleep, and to depart(respectfully, to die) are all homophones. Inu.
Here's the first look at what this project is really aiming to create! I spent a month and a half storyboarding all this, then another week to edit it together and create the music myself. Now that the foundation is here, I'm more confident that I can have the entire movie's script storyboarded just like it. Stay tuned for more updates!

I had a fine and dandilishious day until I was reminded that it is Laika day and now I'm crying because of a random dog who was just picked up from a street died 65 years ago.
You don't go and just pick up a random dog from the street and make it happy for a second thinking someone cares and then killing it off just to beat some Americans. Not even if you are a citizen of the great USSR.
(in case you didn't hear the sarcasm of the last sentence I will just make it clear before I post, as someone from a country that had to fight to survive the regime I do not find it great in any shape or form)
And if you really think "oh at least she had the honour of being the first living being to orbit the Earth" then I will personally fight with you because dogs deserve love, not honour.
Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about Toy Story (as I often do), and Toy Story 2 makes Andy’s ownership of Andy kind of confusing. In Toy Story 2, we learn that Woody is a toy based on an old children’s Cowboy show from the 50’s called Woody’s Roundup that was cancelled after Sputnik launched, making Woody and the other Woody’s Roundup toys rare collectibles. Andy is a 90’s kid who would’ve been born close to 30 years after Woody’s Roundup was cancelled. Unless there were reruns (which seems unlikely), there’s no way he would’ve heard of Woody’s Roundup.
So how in the world did Andy come into possession of a rare toy from a TV show that aired decades before he was born? Woody can’t be a hand-me-down, because Woody’s entire character arc throughout the series makes no sense if he’s had other kids before Andy. Did Andy’s mom buy Woody from a regular toy store that just happened to be selling an incredibly rare and valuable decades-old toy? And if Woody himself is so rare, what about the other Woody merchandise we see in Andy’s room. Is that stuff not rare and valuable too? Is Andy unknowingly sitting on an entire treasure trove of rare Woody merch, or is merch for a 40 year old show still being produced and sold in the 90’s?
