Had a visitor today
Tumblr media
My neighbor’s African Grey. He got out of his enclosure and made it into my back yard. He’s very friendly and wants me to pick him up but I’m not familiar enough with big birds to feel comfortable doing that. I set out some water and raw sunflower seeds, but honestly I think he just wants company while we wait for his owners to get home.
@spyderqueen I almost dm’d you to ask for advice but I think we’re ok.

re: misinformation: every single post that talks about the supreme court having "eliminated " miranda rights is driving me to madness bc THAT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENED.
the ruling is about whether you can sue a police officer under a specific federal civil statute for not reading you your miranda rights, as a 5th amendment (right against self incrimination) violation.
it's about whether you can get damages (monetary or otherwise) in a CIVIL trial, not about whether your post-arrest statements can be used against you in a CRIMINAL one.
what the court's finding says is that not having your rights read to you alone does not allow you to sue under that specific federal statute. it does NOT say that the police no longer have to inform you of your rights, or that coerced confession can be admitted as evidence during a criminal trial.
is it a good ruling? no obviously it's dumb as fuck & the legal hair splitting that took place to reach it is absurd. but it's not a case of "ooooh well what a COINCIDENCE that the USSC overturned miranda RIGHT BEFORE a bunch of people would be out protesting."
that's just. not how any of this works.

zorilleerrant replied to your post “Plague Tapestry”
Not sure on the imagery, but the little scenes looking pastoral at first but having a grimmer meaning may be inspired by memorial quilts and memorial murals, which you've probably seen a lot of - each artist quilts or paints a section, often clearly delineated but thematically connected. The imagery itself reminds me of some fake children's book but I can't think of what, Bosch inspired probably
I don’t think I’ve seen a ton of memorial quilts, other than the AIDS quilt which I was exposed to quite a lot growing up in San Francisco -- memorial murals I probably have but can’t think of any off the top of my head. But there has been a lot of pastoral embroidery on my dash lately...

Okay, either I have seen something like this recently, or you just set off an intense moment of deja vu. Not the tapestry element, but the grim reaper and the slogan
I mean, it’s pretty much the ironic spirit of the age :D But if it is out there somewhere I’d like to see it.

Sounds fascinating. Sir Pterry would approve, I think.
Ahahaha, now I’m reminded of the shirt i owned as a teen which was Death captioned I COULD JUST MURDER A CURRY.
spyderqueen replied to your post “Plague Tapestry”
Okay that's eerie but also I would love to see it it sounds super fascinating. Dream art is so delightfully bizarre.
Honestly if I had the ability or skill I would try drawing it. I might give the cat-death image a try anyway.

spyderqueen replied to your post: <p>Hot take: I have never had a good waffle....
I had to think about this but ultimately while I’d rather have a mediocre pancake than a mediocre waffle, but I’ve had some truly AMAZING waffles in my life and I can’t think of any really amazing pancakes to that same level (outside of things they were topped with). but in an unknown situation I’ll default to pancakes because a mediocre waffle is just very sad
Now THIS I can agree with. Pancakes are always just, fine. I’ve never had one that made me think, “this is a meal I will remember” I don’t eat them because I rarely go for mediocrity in my food life (not NEVER, but rarely).
But waffles? Oh, waffles are a TIGHTROPE of a food, one one hand Glory! Joy! A crisp and light opening into the ideal of the world might be, if only we believe in the essential goodness of humanity, if only we put the work behind our words!
On the other hand, PAINFUL, AGONIZING, CRUSHING FAILURE. A bad waffle makes one question why flour, sugar, and indeed, the very concept of cooking over heat was ever invented.
But we dare! What if you fall, but oh my dear what if you FLY???

I feel like it should be named for a feature it doesn't have. I mean shellos doesn't have a shell, and gastrodon doesn't appear to have teeth...
That's an interesting point! Some of Gastrodon's dex entries say "Long ago, its entire back was shielded with a sturdy shell. There are traces of it left in its cells." So maybe Shellos used to have one as well? Here are their name origins, though:

DCA is pretty terrible but I still prefer using it than Dulles, which is its own circle of hell.
I don’t think I’ve ever been through Dulles, so it’s possible I’m diagnosing without full context. But man. DCA just has a vibe.

spyderqueen replied to your photoset: AND HERE IS WHERE I HIT THE ROOF.  French, great....
Also I call bullshit on Mandarin. For that time period and region I’m pretty sure Cantonese (well, specifically Yue dialects) would make more sense for Ling’s native tongue.
Yeah, I’m 86% sure they used Mandarin because it’s the dialect the actor spoke best, but Canton was far and away the origin of most folks back then.
I can let that slide because so many things about Ling have been right, and given his age, it’s highly unlikely his parents were gold rushers, so they might have been speculators from higher families, a dishonored son, etc, which would work for a bunch of different reasons for Ling. I don’t know enough about the origins of the Chinese language and where Mandarin was spoken to really work that out, but it’s PLAUSIBLE if not LIKELY, whereas for human beings named doc who are me that Rebecca speaking any version of CHinese thing just slays me.
