Clothing repair is not a moral imperative and you shouldn't feel bad for not doing it

One of the most frustrating things about the whole 'just repair your clothes!' thing is that so many clothes just aren't easily repairable, and yet so many of the takes I've come across act like anyone not repairing their stuff are either lazy or stupid and Contributing To Climate Change.

My favourite pair of jeans was three years old when they ripped along where the back pocket was attached. I darned it. The first time I wore them again they ripped along the edge of the darn line.

I patched and redarned them. They ripped along the other pocket. Patch and redarn. They ripped where I'd sewed the patch on, even though I'd tried to weave in every stitch from more than an inch away

Every time I tried to repair them the denim basically disintegrated, because it was incredibly cheap and thin, so the repairs were stronger and just ripped free

One of my favourite dresses got mangled in a washing machine incident because it was a jersey knit stretch fabric and I have no idea how one goes about patching something that needs to stretch in every direction

I wanted to lightly modify the pocket situation on a denim jacket but couldn't, because I physically couldn't get a needle through the four layers of denim I needed to

One of my favourite t-shirts failed at the underarm seam and I couldn't fix it because they'd cut off and overlocked the majority of the seam allowance, and that had frayed when the seam failed

Another pair of trousers came entirely unseamed up one leg the first time I wore them because the (almost certainly overworked and underpaid) person who sewed it had failed to catch the thread in the hem, so the whole thing just unraveled. I did manage to resew that seam, but it took four weeks and three tries, and it's a bit wonky to this day

I have a favourite hoodie that's hanging up, unwearable, with almost an entire sleeve missing, because it got eaten by mice but I'm too attached to it to bin it, but I have no idea how to even START fixing damage like that.

'Twelve cool visible repair designs!' cool cool so that four colour embroidery over a one inch hole is going to cost approximately as much as just replacing the item cheaply and take how many hours to complete? And how many hours to develop the skills to make it look good?

I don't own a sewing machine. I don't particularly want to own a sewing machine, because they're expensive and take up space and require an entire skillset to use effectively. I have to repair or modify everything by hand. I don't have time for that, generally.

There's so much out there that's treated like a moral choice (clothing repair! Food delivery!Plastic straws!) without any examination of the barriers preventing people from doing the (please note the quote marks) '''right thing'''.

The people who most need to be able to repair their clothing are also the people most likely to only be able to afford the cheapest and therefore least repairable clothes. And also least likely to have the time and/or equipment to do so.

i remember you mentioned something about Kim's spikes being fleshy but could he in theory make them sharp in some way? do they have any function outside of looking really freaking cool? also i would love to see what Kim's swim form looks like but i understand if that's extra work and you don't want to do that at the moment

Hmm... in actual vampire squids, their cirri (the spikes) are soft and fleshy, I don't think they can make them sharp or anything. They do use them when threatened by basically inverting their arms over their bodies so the spikes are on top (like what Kim has done) to look scary, but they aren't actually used physically as far as I know. But ignoring real life cirri, maybe his spikes could get stiff if he gets really tense

As for his swim form - given that he can't produce ink, I'm not sure how it'd exactly work. Buuut, just because it's fun, I gave him one anyway. I think he'd probably feel leathery due to the lack of ink coating his body

#i also find it funny how Kim is like. 6'4“. While actual vampire squids are like 12 inches long #kim mostly inverted his hair due to the spikes annoying him by poking his face. and because he thinks it looks cool. Also quick rant. I do think social media has made some people less empathic. Like that quick dopamine for commenting “WOMP WOMP” on a video of a kid getting badly injured will make more people feel satisfied than being a good person. I can’t imagine these people getting into some field where being a nice person is required. Even faking being nice. Like being a daycare worker or a vet.

theories about the Doctor's sexuality are always insane to me like. they are so beyond gender and sexuality they are an alien from an advanced race I think if you asked them if they loved someone romantically or platonically they would just be so confused like we see how deeply and differently they love all of their companions that the idea they could only love them in those two ways would be ridiculous to them. yknow?? like they didn't love Rose romantically they loved Rose in the way they could only love rose and they loved Donna in the only way they could love Donna and they loved all of their companions in non transferable non comparative ways and the idea any of their relationships could fit into two labels I think would make the doctor laugh in your face.

In highschool I was the wallflower, so not a lot of people talked to me. Most of the time, I later learned, they were scared of me (my intense autistic eyes).

But one day this girl just did the normal extrovert thing that extroverts do where they say Hi to you even though you aren't super close friends. She just did it to be nice because I guess we must have talked once and she knew my name. And I replied, "What do you need?" And she said "Oh, nothing! I was just saying hi :)" and I said "Oh... sorry I thought you must have wanted something because not a lot of people say hi to me." And when I said it I didn't realize how absolutely bizzare that must sound to a person who has lots of friends in school like her. I had I wanna say maybe... two? Total? In school.

Anyway, after that every time she saw me in passing until we graduated she said hi to me. And it wasn't until the third or fourth time she did it that I realized she must have kept doing it because of what I said, and it was a really small gesture but I noticed it and it changed me. Like I don't even remember her name.

Since then, I think a lot about the power of saying hello. It's why I always respond when someone says hi to me, especially if they make a habit out of it.

It came up again about a year ago when I was still living with my old roommates, too. One of them sucked, the other one was nice. At some point the shitty roommate stop greeting me when I got home, but the nice one would always say hi as long as he was in the common room and saw me. And I remembered thinking about that girl in highschool who said hi to me even though she didn't have to to let me know she saw me.

Around the time I left the apartment (on bad terms, mind you, the bad roommate was really bad), one of the things the good roommate said to me was that he has noticed the bad one stopped greeting me, and that the two of them had even had a discussion about it where he told the bad one he still thought it was important to do even if it seemed like "[Squid] didn't want it." I had suspected the good roommate had continued to say hi to me for that reason, but hearing that was actually the reason he did it was very profound to me.

So, nature as an introvert widthstanding, I always say hi when I can, because what that girl and my good roommate did were really important to me and I'd like to let people know I see them, too.
